In the past, Yangzhou was polluted heavily. Both of the sides of the street were full of rubbish. Also, a great deal of waste pollution was poured into the rivers and lakes. But at present, many changes have taken place in my hometown. The rivers are much clearer than before and streets are much tidier. Our environment is becoming more and more beautiful.

Children are born with endless curiosity. They explore the world fearlessly, asking questions like “Why is the sky blue?” or “How do birds fly?” But as they grow older, many lose this natural wonder. George Land, George Land, a researcher from NASA, tested 1,600 children at ages 5,10, and 15. At age 5,98% showed high creativity and curiosity. By age 10, only 30% scored well, and by 15, just 12% remained curious. ①
Why does this happen? Land believes that as people learn more, they start to feel they “know enough” and stop asking questions and acting curious.
Research shows that allowing our curiosity to be piqued can be very good for our mind. For example, when you face a challenging problem without a clear answer, your brain works harder and becomes more creative. With curiosity, the mind gains a fresh perspective (角度).
In education, curiosity serves as a stepping stone to success. Studies show curious people are 30%more likely to remember facts. ② A study from Duke University shows that curious people are more patient and willing to find the ways to solve the problem, while less curious people always rush through tasks, missing chances for deeper learning.
③ Curiosity also helps people work together. Curious people listen to different opinions, leading to better teamwork and fewer mistakes. Imagine a group project: curious students ask questions, share ideas, and solve problems creatively.
Ready to develop your curiosity? In fact, low levels of curiosity don’t mean your curiosity is just gone and you can train your curiosity. ④ To keep curiosity alive, try these tips: ask “why” daily, explore hobbies like painting or robotics, and view mistakes as learning chances. Even famous scientists like Marie Curie and Albert Einstein valued curiosity. Curie once said, “Be less curious about people and more curious about ideas.”
1.The sentence “Curiosity also builds patience.” can be put in ________.
A.① B.② C.③ D.④
2.The word “piqued” in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to ________.
A.tested B.received C.explained D.raised
3.What can we know about curiosity from the passage?
A.As children grow older, they will be more curious.
B.With knowledge increasing, kids will be more curious.
C.Curiosity allows different opinions within a group.
D.Curiosity can be improved by remembering knowledge.
4.What’s the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A.To encourage people to keep their curiosity.
B.To prove the possibility of training curiosity.
C.To show how curiosity leads to scientists’ success.
D.To explore different reasons for developing curiosity.

The rain poured down again. Mary hated it—She couldn’t go out in the bad weather. She looked out of the window and asked Martha, one of her servants (仆人), “What do you do when it rains like this?”
“Eh! Most of us prefer to stay inside and read,” Martha answered. “But Dickon goes out just the same as if the sun was shining. He says he sees things on rainy days as they don’t show on fine days. He once found a wounded fox and brought it home.”

In villages of African countries such as Kenya and Tanzania, families often depend on children to get money through farming, herding, or informal work instead of sending them to schools. School attendance rates (入学率) in these areas drop below 40%, particularly during harvest seasons. What’s worse, because of poverty (贫困) and poor economy, over 50% of the population in these areas is badly in need of electricity (电).
To solve these problems, Yolk, a US company, designed the Solar Cow—a solar-powered station shaped like a cow. Set in schools, this creative system serves double purposes: providing renewable (可再生的) energy and basic education. The Solar Cow stores small-sized batteries called Solar Milks, which can only be charged (充电) at the station. Families take part in the program by promising to send their children to school regularly, where students put their Solar Milks into the cow-shaped station during class hours. By the end of the school day, the batteries are fully charged and taken home, providing families with electricity for based needs.
A single Solar Cow serves 150-200 students. Yolk plans to put in 500 units across East Africa by 2026, working closely with NGOs like UNICEF and governments to pay for the costs.
Since the first Solar Cow appeared in 2018, the projects in 12 Kenyan and Tanzanian villages have made great differences. School attendance rates increased by 42% within six months. Dropout rates during harvest seasons fell by 67%. Households saved an average of $15 monthly.
The Solar Cow shows how technology helps deal with interconnected (相关联的) social problems. By transforming schools into energy stations, it supports education, reduces poverty, and gets renewable energy. And this will be a replicable (可复制的) example for more similar situations. As Yolk’s founder, Chang Hee Lee, says, “When a child’s education becomes the key to powering their home, we’re not just lighting a room—we’re lighting a child’s future.”
1.What is the purpose of Paragraph 1?
A.To introduce the background of the Solar Cow program.
B.To show the development of African village economy.
C.To give some information about the Solar Cow program.
D.To explain why Africa has low school attendance rates.
2.To join in the Solar Cow program, families need to ________.
A.pay for the Solar Milks B.send their children to school
C.work in the cow-shaped station D.keep cows to exchange electricity
3.How does the writer show the results of the Solar Cow program?
A.By listing numbers. B.By using English sayings.
C.By making predictions. D.By asking questions.
4.Which of the following is TRUE about the Solar Cow program?
A.Yolk doesn’t need to pay for its cost. B.It’ll be set in other places besides schools.
C.It can be copied to use in more other fields. D.Its main purpose is to solve the electricity problem.

After a terrible storm, Robinson Crusoe woke up on a lonely island. His clothes were wet and broken, and his body ached. “I must stay alive,” He whispered. He swam to the broken ship and found tools, a gun, and some dry food. With wood from the ship, he built a small tent under a tall cliff. Every morning, he cut a mark on a wooden post to count the days. By the tenth mark, he named the place “Hope Camp”.
The island was full of wild goats and colorful birds. Robinson Crusoe hunted them with his gun and cooked meat over a fire. One day, he found corn seeds in a bag from the ship. He planted them near his tent. After weeks of waiting, tiny green plants grew! He danced around them happily. He also caught two baby goats and fed them grass. Soon, they gave Robinson Crusoe fresh milk. At night, he wrote in his diary: “Today I fixed my tent. Tomorrow I will explore the east beach.”
One sunny morning, Robinson Crusoe saw something strange on the sand—a human footprint! His heart beat fast. “Is someone watching me?” He hid in his tent for three days. Then, he built a strong fence around his home using sharp sticks and ropes.
Years later, he heard shouts near the shore. Some men were running after a young man! Robinson Crusoe shot his gun into the air to scare them. The man ran to Robinson. Robinson named him Friday because it was the day that Robinson saved his life. Friday helped Robinson fish with wooden spears and taught him to find sweet fruits. They built a boat by cutting down a tree and burning its center. Every day, Friday learned English words like “fire”, “friend”, and “home”.

AI-Are We Really in Control?
Recently, I have started using an AI writing tool to help me improve my writing. At first, I was 1 (amaze). I could just write a few words, and the tool would quickly produce an organized paragraph. It saved me time and even made me take 2 (proud) in my good writing. Like many people, I couldn’t help 3 (use) it more and more—for schoolwork, for writing emails, even for simple text messages.
But last week, I was asked to write something personal-a piece about what 4 (kind) means to me. I gave the AI a clear instruction, and it returned a well-organized article. The grammar was perfect, the logic (逻辑) was smooth, but something didn’t feel right. I read the text again and again, and I 5 (realize) why it didn’t sound like me. It didn’t show any real emotion. It was as if a smart machine had spoken for me, not with me.
That moment made me think. Isn’t the point of writing or any kind of expression to share our thoughts and feelings in an honest way? Yes. AI 6 (it) is powerful. It can help us organize ideas, fix our grammar, and even inspire us. But we need to rethink whether our writing 7 (able) are actually improved during the process. If we use it too much, we 8 (risk) losing something important in the future: our voice and our connection to the words we write.
AI is a great tool when it is used 9 (wise). But don’t let it take over your thoughts. Use it to support your ideas. Also, don’t feel pressured to make everything sound perfect. What counts more is that your words express you. After all, the most 10 (value) part of any creation is you—your thoughts, your feelings, your story, and your voice.

For me, living in Canda for 25 years, China is a new world that I have longed to explore. This spring, I c 1 Yangzhou to be my first stop on a 16-month trip around China. It was like love at first sight. At 15, I bought a book of collection of poems about Tang Dynasty. T 2 it, I heard of Yangzhou for the first time. I was deeply attracted by a poem that was w 3 by Li Bai—“Sailing to Yangzhou in March”.
Yangzhou, sitting 2,500 years at the crossing of the Yangtze River and the 2,400-year-old Grand Canal (大运河), is one of the first 24 historic and cultural c 4 in China. In the old town, there are many streets and houses. It’s best to visit the city in spring. Spring paints the city in bright colors.
Yangzhou has always been famous for i 5 gardens. Among them, the Slender West Lake, one of the b 6 attractions in the city, was my first stop. The park with its fantastic landscape and lots of history has enough to keep a tourist busy for the whole day. What a shame I s 7 could afford half a day!
My next stop was He Garden, one of the best protected gardens in Yangzhou. It was once o 8 by the family of He Zhidao in Qing Dynasty. He Zhidao successfully brought Chinese and W 9 architectural (建筑的) features together.
Yangzhou is also the starting point of the Grand Canal tour. Taking a boat along the part of the canal in Yangzhou, I w 10 at the liveliness of this ancient waterway and the city’s history and culture.
Luckily, my two-day trip to Yangzhou was filled with pleasure and wonder. It made me hungry for more China.
