A More than 25 years ago, Saroo Brierley lived in rural (农村) India. One day, he played with his brother along the rail line and fell asleep. When he woke up and found himself alone, the 4yearold decided his brother might be on the train he saw in front of himso he got on. That train took him a thousand miles across the country to a totally strange city. He lived on the streets, and then in an orphanage(孤儿院). There, he was adopted by an Australian family and flown to Tasmania. As he writes in his new book, A Long Way Home, Brierley couldn't help but wonder about his hometown back in India. He remembered landmarks, but since he didn't know his town's name, finding a small neighborhood in a vast country proved to be impossible. Then he found a digital mapping program. He spent years searching for his hometown in the program's satellite pictures. In 2011, he came across something familiar. He studied it and realized he was looking at a town's central business district from a bird'seye view. He thought,“On the righthand side you should see the threeplatform train station”—and there it was. “And on the lefthand side you should see a big fountain”—and there it was. Everything just started to match. When he stood in front of the house where he grew up as a child, he saw a lady standing in the entrance. “There's something about me, ” he thought—and it took him a few seconds but he finally remembered what she used to look like. In an interview Brierley says, “My mother looked so much shorter than I remembered. But she came forth and walked forward, and I walked forward, and my feelings and tears and the chemical in my brain, you know, it was like a nuclear fusion(核聚变). I just didn't know what to say, because I never thought seeing my mother would ever come true. And here I am, standing in front of her. ” [语篇解读] 这是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了布尔利小时候意外走失,长大后通过自己努力找回家人的故事。 1.Why was Brierley separated from his family about 25 years ago? A.He got on a train by mistake. A twofootlong spike sticks out of her side. It's a piece of fishing equipment that the shark ate carelessly. After travelling into her body, the spike punctured (刺) the shark's stomach. A man swimming in the water notices the shark. Then, he warns Sea World Marine Park in the nearby town of the Gold Coast. Sea World sends a 12person team from its rescue centre to where the shark has been discovered in Moreton Bay Marine Park. Soon, they find her lying on the seafloor. “She'll die without help, ” says Trevor Long, leader of the rescue centre. Using an onboard crane (吊车), the rescuers move the shark into their boat's 13footlong tank (缸). Then Dr David Blyde gives the shark medicine and performs an operation to remove the spike. After that, the team sails with the shark to Sea World 33 miles away. They place the fish in a 49footlong tank and wait to see if she gets better. To give the shark's stomach some time to get better, she isn't fed for the first few days. A week after her operation, Long offers the shark a small, dead fish. The animal refuses to eat. But days later when he drops another fish into her tank, the shark enjoys her meal. By now the shark's wounds have got better. Two weeks after her rescue, they take the shark back to the boat and return her to Moreton Bay Marine Park. This lost city envelops sites like Tikal, Holmul, and Witzna, but shows that these famous areas are a small part of this lost urban network. Hidden under the jungles of the Maya Biosphere Reserve site, more than 60,000 humanmade featureshomes, canals, highways, and morehave been identified in aerial (从飞机上的) images collected by some international researchers headed by the PAGUNAM Foundation, a Maya cultural and natural heritage organization. Those have experts rethinking the outlines and complexity of the Maya Empire. These ancient peoples obviously created these imaginative cultures based on their known relics (遗迹), but the new research has suggested that the size of this lost society is far beyond what experts imagined. The findings will be explored in a onehour documentary called “Lost Treasures of the Maya Snake Kings”, to be broadcast on the National Geographic Channel. This breakthrough was possible thanks to LiDAR sensors, which can survey lands in 3D by bouncing pulses off the ground from unmanned air vehicles and others. LiDAR is exceptionally useful for detecting archeological (考古的) sites, as it gets through jungles and other features that hold up exploration on the ground. The technique has made many discoveries become a reality in recent years. For instance, major finds at Angkor, Cambodia and Caracol, Belize can explain what it did. The final goal is to survey Guatemala's lowlands with it. “There are entire cities we didn't know about now showing up in the survey data,” Francisco EstradaBelli, one of the lead archeologists on the project, said in Nat Geo's coming documentary. “There are 20,000 square kilometres more to be explored and there are going to be hundreds of cities about the mysterious people who built this urban network there that we don't know about, and we will push back the frontiers with the technology,” he added. Enjoy your time living in the moment. ” These updates were sent via Moment, an app that tracks the screen time, created by Kevin Holesh in 2014 to fight his own device addiction. He was working as an independent app developer, spending hours each day staring at screens. After work, Holesh found that he was looking mindlessly online instead of talking to his wife or taking his dogs for a walk. “I wanted a way of seeing how much time I was sinking into my phone, ” he said. “So I came up with something that could monitor my screen time. ” Holesh found that he was spending 75 minutes on his phone a day. He added a function to the app that informed him whenever his screen time was more than 40 minutes.“My phone would make a sound like a bee, and I'd go and do something else. It was like something pushing me in the right direction.” he said. Holesh figured that if the system worked for him, it would work for others, and later that year he made Moment a free app. To date, it has been downloaded 8 million times. Besides, Moment also has a “coach” function, offering guided programs to help users focus and be more productive, for $ 7.99 a month. “I am so much happier, I sleep better, I read more, I take better care of myself, and most of all I am present in my daytoday life.” Jack, a user said. When we are traveling, we will be lost in the beautiful scenery and forget our stress and worries. Secondly, when traveling, we may meet some people who share the same interest and hobbies with us, and we may develop a lasting friendship. Besides, he who travels far knows more. Traveling can provide us chances to deal with problems, thus we can gain more knowledge and improve our ability. 第二节(满分25分) 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。 An unexpected change on the road It was a damp evening in September 2013 when I landed in Kuching, the capital city of Sarawak in Malaysia. I was a 19yearold Dubairaised kid away from home for the first time to start my undergraduate studies in mechanical engineering. Alone and homesick, the wet welcome I received at the airport didn't make me feel any better. I had never travelled alone before and the sevenhour flight from Dubai was the longest flight I had ever taken. I pushed my luggage and headed to the airport exit to find a grey van with the name of my university on it. My ride, I assumed, and I was right. As we left the airport, the driver began talking to me; he told me that I was the last of the new students he had to pick up that day. He shared information with me about the city and its people and what I should see and do. As I am a driving enthusiast myself, we started talking about cars and driving in Dubai and his accounts of driving in Kuching. “Never make a Sarawakian angry” he warned. “No road rage (路怒). Very dangerous!” He then went on to list his experiences of road rage and by the time he had finished, I had made up my mind to be very passive on the roads. Not long into our journey, the lights of the car behind flashed at us. This continued more aggressively and my driver started to panic. We pulled over to the roadside in a welllit area. My heart was pounding but I tried to put on a brave face as the man from the car emerged and made his way to my side of the van. As he reached my window, I lowered it and tried to force a smile. He reached into the van and I let out a loud “Whoa (used to tell someone to become calmer)!” 注意: 1.续写词数应为150左右; 2.可以适当增加细节,以使行文连贯。 Then I looked down at his hands to see that he was holding a travel bag.________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ With a sigh of relief, I took my bag and thanked this stranger.________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ 参考范文: Then I looked down at his hands to see that he was holding a travel bag. “Is it yours? I've found it at the airport and tried to catch up with you.” the man said. I opened the bag and it contained my passport, return tickets, as well as cash and letters for the university. I had left it behind on the trolley at the airport and this man had been trying to return it to me. At this moment, I realized that we had wronged him completely. (76words) With a sigh of relief, I took my bag and thanked this stranger. The stranger's friendly smile put me at ease. I imagined the horrible scenario had he not returned it. When we arrived, the driver wished me luck with my university studies and drove away. These acts of kindness instantly cheered me up and thanks to this honest stranger, the initial selfdoubt I had about my decision to study so far away from home was replaced with hope and excitement. 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
