The four books delve into a wonderfully wide range of topics, covering breathing, mystery illnesses, bias, and even the magical world of mushrooms. Read on to find out why they're four of the most interesting nonfiction books of the year 2021! Breath:The New Science of a Lost Art by James Nestor How conscious are you of your own breathing? Reading this could change that forever, offering facts on our breathing, and how even the smallest of changes can have great health benefits. The End of Bias: How We Change Our Minds by Jessica Nordell Journalist and author Jessica Nordell looks at unconscious bias, weaving fascinating stories and offering reallife solutions to some problems in our own society. From issues within the police force to how we teach children under five, this book will leave you with a whole new outlook on how to tackle the issue of bias. The Sleeping Beauties: And Other Stories of Mystery Illness by Suzanne O' Sullivan Two cases look at children who fall asleep for years at a time and many employees experiencing memory loss at the US Embassy in Cuba. O'Sullivan travels the world to get to the bottom of these strange incidents. Entangled Life: How Fungi Make Our Worlds by Merlin Sheldrake You've probably never given much thought to mushrooms, but biologist Merlin Sheldrake makes this exploration into the world of fungi feel like reading a science fiction novel. The book takes you on a literal deep dive under the Earth's surface, within our own bodies and even into outer space to discover a massively diverse kingdom of organisms, which sustain nearly all living things. 1.Which topic is mentioned in these books? Gerhard—a former soldier in the German Imperial Army—was a musician devoted to German music. He was employed as a composer(作曲家)by the Kulturbund. Both Toni and Gerhard were particularly devoted to their only child: they loved her dearly, gave her everything they had, and taught her what was to be admired. The World War II broke out. Gerhard was out of work, finances were nonexistent, and they were unable to secure a way out of Germany. When Stella's school offered her the chance to head to Britain on a school trip (and then stay there), her parents said no. They weren't separating the family, so they had no choice but to stay in a country that was getting increasingly dangerous. At first, Traces of War says that Stella Goldschlag enjoyed a certain amount of freedom. She went to college, studied fashion, and joined a jazz band as a singer. It was there that she met and married her first husband, Manfred Kubler. Her luck didn't last long, though. Her husband wasn't so fortunate. He was arrested and forced to leave for Auschwitz on May 3, 1943. He died there just two days later, just 20 years old. Stella and her mother continued to work in factories while trying to avoid arrest. However, they weren't the only ones who tried to survive the war by hiding right in the open. Around 7, 000 managed to hold onto their freedom, and in the slang(俚语)terms of the time, they were called “Uboats”, as they were hiding just under the surface. 4.What prevented Stella from going to England? A.The loss of her father's job. B.The danger of going abroad. C.Her parents' objection to that. D.The limitation of her freedom. 根据第二段第二句“When Stella's school offered her the chance to head to Britain on a school trip (and then stay there), her parents said no.(当斯特拉的学校给她一个去英国参加学校旅行(然后呆在那里)的机会时,她的父母拒绝了)”可知,Stella的父母反对她去英国。故选C项。 5.What did Stella study in college? A.Fashion. B.Jazz. C.Politics. D.Composition. 根据第三段第二句“She went to college, studied fashion, and joined a jazz band as a singer.(她上了大学,学习时装,并加入了一个爵士乐队当歌手)”可知,Stella在大学学习的是时装。故选A项。 6.How old was Stella when Manfred passed away? A.About 10 years old. B.About 17 years old. C.About 20 years old. D.About 21 years old. 根据第一段第一句“Gerhard and Toni Goldschlag welcomed their daughter Stella on July 10, 1922.(1922年7月10日,格哈德和托尼·戈德施拉格迎来了他们的女儿斯特拉)”,第四段第三、四句“He was arrested and forced to leave for Auschwitz on May 3, 1943. He died there just two days later, just 20 years old. (1943年5月3日,他被逮捕并被迫前往奥斯维辛集中营。两天后他就在那里去世了,年仅20岁)”可知,Manfred去世时,Stella二十一岁。故选D项。 7.Why did some people get the name “Uboats”? A.They were living by rowing boats. B.They often hid their identities during the war. C.They often fought against enemies by boat. D.They were working in factories for making boats. 根据第五段第一、二句“Stella and her mother continued to work in factories while trying to avoid arrest. However, they weren't the only ones who tried to survive the war by hiding right in the open (Stella和她的母亲继续在工厂工作,同时试图避免被捕。然而,他们并不是唯一试图在战争中躲藏在外的人)”,及“they were called “Uboats”, as they were hiding just under the surface.(他们被称为“U型潜艇”,因为它们就藏在表面之下)”可知,他们被叫作“U型艇”是因为他们在战争期间神出鬼没,经常隐藏自己的身份,避免被抓。故选B项。 C Online services that use computers to interview job seekers were increasingly used by companies during the COVID19 crisis. But the technology raises questions about whether a machine can correctly or fairly judge a person's personality and reactions in front of a camera. Dana Anthony is one job seeker who has experienced such interviews. One was for a parttime job at Target last year. The day after the interview, she got an email informing her that she was not chosen. Anthony said she did not know why she was removed from consideration so quickly. She had no sense of how the interview had gone. She said this is because she received no human feedback during the process. Her rejection email from Target stated: “We're unable to provide specific feedback regarding your application.” Anthony was rejected for another job in December after completing another online interview. One interview system is run by a business called HireVue, one of the leading companies in the field. In the past, the Utahbased HireVue used artificial intelligence(AI)methods to judge a jobseeker's personality and job skills. It did this by observing the expressions on a person's face during the interview. But after facing intense criticism about the scientific effectiveness of its claims and the possibility of unfairness, HireVue announced earlier this year that it would stop using that method. However, the company's AIbased system still considers speech and word choices when rating a candidate's personality and skills. HireVue helped create a market for “ondemand” video interviews. Companies using the services include stores Target and Ikea, technology companies like Amazon, and banks like JP Morgan and Goldman Sachs. Companies in the oil and travel industries, and even school systems, have used them. HireVue chief Kevin Parker said its systems, which turn speech into text to make verdicts on job skills, can perform better than human interviewers. 8.What did Anthony's two job applications have in common? A.She was satisfied with them. B.She failed to get the jobs. C.She was angry with them. D.She was treated rudely. 根据第二段中“The day after the interview, she got an email informing her that she was not chosen.(面试后的第二天,她收到了一封电子邮件,通知她没有被选中)”第四段中“Anthony was rejected for another job in December after completing another online interview.(去年12月,在完成另一份在线面试后,安东尼被另一份工作拒绝)”可知,此人两次线上面试求职都被拒绝了。故选B。 9.How did HireVue judge an interviewee in the past? A.By listening to voice tone. B.By analyzing applicants' answers. C.By checking personal experiences. D.By watching face changes. 根据第五段中“It did this by observing the expressions on a person's face during the interview.(它通过观察一个人在面试过程中的面部表情来做到这一点)”可知,过去HireVue 通过观察一个人在面试过程中的面部表情来做到这一点的。故选D。 10.What can we infer about HireVue's new services in Paragraph 7? A.They are questioned. B.They are under experiment. C.They are popular with companies. D.They are very popular with job seekers. 根据第七段中“Companies using the services include stores Target and Ikea, technology companies like Amazon, and banks like JP Morgan and Goldman Sachs. Companies in the oil and travel industries, and even school systems, have used them.(使用这些服务的公司包括塔吉特百货和宜家,亚马逊等科技公司,以及摩根大通和高盛等银行。石油和旅游行业的公司,甚至学校系统都使用了它们)”可知,HireVue的新服务被广泛使用,受到了公司的欢迎。故选C。 11.What does the underlined word “verdicts” in the last paragraph probably mean? A.Notes. B.Efforts. C.Impressions D.Judgments. D Dutch artist Daan Roosegaarde's latest project, GROW, involved installing (安装) thousands of blue, red and purple LED lights in a 2hectare field of leek (韭菜) for both artistic and practical purposes. People driving by the town of Lelystad, in central Netherlands, at night, this time of year are treated to a fantastic sight—a 20,000 square meters field of leek glowing blue, red and purple. Thought up by Studio Roosegaarde, the unique artistic installation is designed both as an honor to Dutch farmers and as an inspiration for them to experiment with artificial light in outdoor farming. Daan Roosegaarde also wants GROW to send a hopeful light to people in these trying times, giving new meaning to the word “agriculture” as a living cultural artwork. Nighttime ultraviolet (紫外线的) light has been used in glasshouse agriculture for a while now, especially in places where direct sunlight is scarce , but its use in outdoor fanning has so far been very limited. Ultraviolet light is known to help plants grow better, but Studio Roosegaarde is also testing a theory according to which certain wavelengths of ultraviolet light could reduce the need for pesticides by up to 50%. “So we started to scan the plants with these wavelengths of light and then suddenly it started to dance, the light,” Daan Roosegaarde said. “You had these huge fields of fireflies, as if they were, and we were testing it and the magic started kicking in, so I think that's when the worlds of science, art and design meet and enhance each other.” Solarpowered LEDs give ultraviolet light onto the leek plants, thus adding the effect of natural sunlight after sunset, and creating a wonderful sight at the same time. GROW is currently only visible near Lelystad, but Roosegaarde plans to take the visuallyimpressive installation on the road to over 40 countries. Each country will have its own local or national crop and its own unique light recipe. Over the years, Studio Roosegaarde has created a number of fascinating installations, like the glowinthedark bicycle path powered directly by the sun. 12.What does GROW probably refer to? A.A project creating artworks. B.A project installing LED lights. C.A project producing pesticides. D.A project building glasshouses. 根据第一段“Dutch artist Daan Roosegaarde's latest project, GROW, involved installing (安装) thousands of blue, red and purple LED lights in a 2hectare field of leek (韭菜) for both artistic and practical purposes.(丹麦艺术家Daan Roosegaarde最新的一个项目GROW——涉及安装数千个蓝色,红色,紫色的LED灯在2公顷的韭菜地里,创造出艺术和实用效果)”可知,GROW是一个安装数千个LED灯的项目。故选B。 13.What does the underlined word “scarce” in Paragraph 2 probably mean? A.Sufficient. B.Enough. C.Steady. D.Lacking. 根据第二段“Nighttime ultraviolet (紫外线的) light has been used in glasshouse agriculture for a while now, especially in places where direct sunlight is scarce , but its use in outdoor fanning has so far been very limited. (夜间紫外线灯目前已经在温室农业中被使用,尤其是在阳光直射scarce 的地方,但到目前为止,它在户外通风中的使用非常有限)”可知,夜间紫外线灯很少用于户外(多阳光直射),它被运用于温室(室内,阳光直射没有户外充足),被运用于温室农业是为了增加光照。由此可知,夜间紫外线灯在直射光线缺乏的地方尤其需要。因此scarce 的意思是“缺乏的,不足的”。因此D.Lacking(缺乏的)和划线意思相同。故选D。 14.What is the third paragraph mainly about? A.What artistic effects were caused by the project B.Why the project GROW was conducted. C.How Roosegaarde's design idea came up. D.How Roosegaarde's theory was tested. 根据第三段“Solarpowered LEDs give ultraviolet light onto the leek plants, thus adding the effect of natural sunlight after sunset, and creating a wonderful sight at the same time. (太阳能LEDs 给韭菜提供夜间紫外线,这样就增加了太阳落山后的光照效果,同时创造出美丽的夜景)”可知,第三段主要讲Roosegaarde的理论怎样被用于实践。故选D。 15.What does Roosegaarde think of the future of GROW? A.It is promising. B.It is pressing. C.It is challenging. D.It is demanding. 根据最后一段“GROW is currently only visible near Lelystad, but Roosegaarde plans to take the visuallyimpressive installation on the road to over 40 countries. (目前,GROW这个项目仅仅在Lelystad附近可以被看见。但是Roosegaarde计划将这种给人视觉印象深刻的装置安装在40多个国家的公路边)”可知,Roosegaarde要把这种装置安装在多个国家,说明他认为他的项目是有前途的。故选A。 You may not consider yourself the patient type. She was screaming for us to open it. We ran to the door, and she said only one word as she took off running: “FIRE!” Immediately we ran out just as the fire engines raced onto our street with their sirens(警报器) screaming. The fire was huge! Flames(火焰) were shooting wildly out of the windows and through the roof of the hundredyearold, threestory house next door. The flames were so tall that they were visible a few miles away. Fire engines filled our entire street, from one end to the other, and even blocked the two cross streets. My husband raced next door to be sure our neighbors had gotten out. All family members were outside and safe, including the dog. He ran to the houses on the other street that backed up to the house on fire and banged on those doors to be sure the neighbors were safe, too. They were. The air was thick with smoke, and it was hard to see and breathe as he came back down our street and arrived home. We were almost grateful for COVID19. Because of it, we were wearing our masks as we always did when we were outside. We sat outside watching the firefighters do the wonderful job that they did. Our street was crowded with fire trucks eleven in all. One engine had a monster light on it that made the street bright enough that it looked like it was high noon on a sunny day. The medical workers and ambulances also came in case they were needed. Thank goodness, they were not. Our house became kind of a “safe house” with our nextdoor neighbors coming and going, as needed. It was a safe place for their dog, too. We made sure she had plenty of water, and she stayed in the house with our dog. After around two hours, the fire was completely controlled.________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ Things have settled down now.________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ 参考答案: After around two hours, the fire was completely controlled. Luckily, all family members were outside and safe including the dog. The house was not completely destroyed. Only several rooms would need to be reconstructed, while the rest of the house could be cleaned. Most of it, while smoky and damp, was repairable. Some neighbors came here to help them clean the house. The neighbor's gratitude for the firefighters and other neighbors is overwhelming. They couldn't stop saying “Thank you.” Things have settled down now. Many neighbors nearby sent lots of things, such as fruits, cloches, quilts, beds and so on. This neighbor didn't know the homeowners, even their names. She was deeply moved. After the fire, the relationships among the neighbourhood were more harmonious, and neighbors were more friendly. They are not sorrow about the fire. Instead, they know love and care make a difference. In fact, no matter what difficult things happen, only if we help each other and work hard, can we overcome them. Be together for a shared future.
