Inanimate Subjects in Continuation Writing Learning objectives Understand and be aware of the differences between Chinese and English expressions on feelings. Be able to judge, appreciate and create the expressions with inanimate subjects in writing. Compare & Summarize (1) When I saw the scene, I felt horrible. The sight of the scene filled me with horror. (2) China was established in 1949. 1949 witnessed the establishment of China. (3) The lecture on Tang poetry will be held in our school hall. Our school hall will see the lecture on Tang poetry. (4) There was thick fog in the field. The thick fog blanketed the field. 公式: 无灵主语句=无灵主语+有灵动词 “无灵主语”(inanimate subject) 就是“没有生命力”的东西 做主语。比如时间,地点,自然现象等。 “有灵动词”(animate verb) 就是把没有生命力的东西,赋予有生命力的动作。 What’s the meaning of Inanimate subject ? 一.时间、地点的名词做主语 常见谓语动词:witness, prove, bring, see, find, provide 等 1.Dusk found the girl crying in the street. 黄昏时分人们发现这个小女孩在街上哭泣。 2.The night was as grey as his mood. 夜晚就像他的心情一样忧郁。 3.The past few years has witnessed the growing economy in China. 在过去的几年里,中国的经济迅速发展。 二.心理或生理状态的名词做主语 (courage, humor, joy, happiness, sorrow, despair, grief, regret, luck, mood,hatred,anger 等) 常见谓语动词:creep(爬行), seize, strike, catch, grip(抓住), envelop, surround, overcome,deprive(剥夺), fade, pass, tear, take possession of, take hold of, sweep through(横扫), bubble over(激动), well up(眼泪等涌上), give way to,overflow 等词 1. Hatred was still bubbling up inside her. 仇恨依然在她心头翻滚 。 2. When my teacher praised me, my cup of happiness overflowed. 当我的老师表扬时,我的快乐都溢出来了。 3. A blaze of anger flashed across his face. 他面露怒色。 三.具体行为和动作意义的名词做主语 (thought, glance, sight, look, feeling, idea, smile, laugh 等) 常见谓语动词:arouse, strike, hit, amaze, frighten, overwhelm, fill, give, make等 1.The thought of hopelessness froze me. 一想到无望,我就不寒而栗。 2.A good idea hit me at the sight of this picture. 一看到这幅画我就想到一个好主意。 3.At that very moment , a brilliant idea flashed into Paul's mind. 就在那时,Paul脑海里闪现一个绝妙想法。 四.身体部分做主语 (head, eyes, cheeks, face, tears, jaw, hair, heart等) 常见谓语动词:drop, roll, beat, hammer, glitter, glow, blur, broke into,be filled with等 1.His eyes glittered with pleasure. 他的眼睛闪烁着快乐。 2.My jaw dropped when I saw how much the meal had cost. 当我看到这餐饭花这么多钱,我的下巴都惊掉了。 1.Why do we use the Inanimate subject in writing ? 2.What’s the advantage of inanimate subject in writing? 在写作时,反复用同一有生命的词作主语,使语句显得单调,重复。 I have learnt that success is not final. So I always stay humble and never let it go to my head. 两个I的使用,使句子显得平淡,甚至缺少连贯性,但如果稍加变动,句子会显得协调的多. Life has taught me that success is not final. His name slipped my mind. 他的名字溜出了我的大脑。 His name didn't take root in my mind. 他的名字没有在我头脑中扎根。 无灵主语句并不是简单的主动语态变为被动语态,而是用主动语态去表达被动意义。 2.使语言更具生动性,避免文章枯燥乏味,呆板无力。 主语是有生命的事物时,展开的句子往往带有该有生命物质 的主观感情色彩,而如果是无灵主语,则表达很客观。 海外华人时刻关注祖国。 3.减少人称主语的使用,增加语言表达的客观性。 Motherland, always, is drawing the heart of overseas Chinese.
