W: Karl, welcome. I know you were in the national competition last week and won second place.
M: Yes.
W: And how do you feel when you get out there on the ice?
M: I do get nervous, so I never think about other skaters. I focus on the audience, hoping they enjoy it — then I skate well. If I start thinking about the judges, then I make mistakes.
W: You have to practice every day obviously. Do you have time for hobbies?
M: Not much. I go swimming whenever I can — it was something I most enjoyed before I got into skating. I’d love to go horse riding or play tennis, but I can’t fit everything in.
W: I hear that you’re going to be in a TV show next week. You must take pride in yourself, don’t you?
M: You could say that again. I always loved the TV show Ice Champions when I was a child and I really can’t believe I’ll be involved in it. I’ve been thinking about how important it is to be fair and just when it comes to evaluating performances.
W: What kind of things will you be looking for as a judge?
M: Well, the skaters should show that they are able to do all the moves without any problems. Each skater has a partner. They can’t choose who they skate with, but they can decide which music they want to skate to.
W: It sounds like an interesting show. Thank you, Karl.

One day, when I was working as a psychologist in England, a boy showed up in my office. It was David. He kept walking up and down restlessly, his face pale, and his hands shaking slightly. His head teacher had referred him to me. “This boy has lost his family,” he wrote. “He is understandably very sad and refuses to talk to others, and I’m very worried about him. Can you help?”
I looked at David and showed him to a chair. How could I help him? There are problems psychology doesn’t have the answer to, and which no words can describe. Sometimes the best thing one can do is to listen openly and sympathetically.
The first two times we met, David didn’t say a word. He sat there, only looking up to look at the children’s drawings on the wall behind me. I suggested we play a game of chess. He nodded. After that he played chess with me every Wednesday afternoon — in complete silence and without looking at me. It’s not easy to cheat in chess, but I admit I made sure David won once or twice.
Usually, he arrived earlier than agreed, took the chess board and pieces from the shelf and began setting them up before I even got a chance to sit down. It seemed as if he enjoyed my company. But why did he never look at me?
“Perhaps he simply needs someone to share his pain with,” I thought. “Perhaps he senses that I respect his suffering.” Some months later, when we were playing chess, he looked up at me suddenly.
“It’s your turn,” he said.
After that day, David started talking. He got friends in school and joined a bicycle club. He wrote to me a few times, about his biking with some friends, and about his plan to get into university. Now he had really started to live his own life.
Maybe I gave David something. But I also learned that one — without any words — can reach out to another person. All it takes is a hug, a shoulder to cry on, a friendly touch, and an ear that listens.
24. When he first met the author, David ________.
A. looked a little nervous B. walked energetically
C. felt a little excited D. showed up with his teacher
25. David enjoyed being with the author because he ________.
A. wanted to ask the author for advice
B. needed to share sorrow with the author
C. liked the children’s drawings in the office
D. beat the author many times in the chess game
26. What can be inferred about David?
A. He liked biking before he lost his family.
B. He recovered from the loss of his family several months later.
C. He never came to the office ahead of the agreed time.
D. He went into university soon after starting to talk.
27. What made David change?
A. His teacher’s help.
B. The author’s friendship.
C. His exchange of letters with the author.
D. The author’s silent communication with him.
A 25. B 26. B 27. D

根据第一段中“One day, when I was working as a psychologist in England, a boy showed up in my office. It was David. He kept walking up and down restlessly, his face pale, and his hands shaking slightly.(当我在英国做心理学家的时候,有一天,一个男孩出现在我的办公室。是大卫。他不安地走来走去,脸色苍白,双手微微颤抖)”可知,当第一次见到作者时,David看起来有点紧张。故选A项。
根据第四段中“It seemed as if he enjoyed my company. But why did he never look at me?(他似乎很喜欢我的陪伴。但他为什么不看我一眼?)”和第五段中““Perhaps he simply needs someone to share his pain with,” I thought. “Perhaps he senses that I respect his suffering.”(“也许他只是需要有人来分担他的痛苦,”我想。“也许他感觉到我尊重他的痛苦。”)”可知,作者认为David喜欢和自己在一起是因为他需要有人和他一起分担痛苦。故选B项。
26题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段中“Some months later, when we were playing chess, he looked up at me suddenly.(几个月后,当我们下棋时,他突然抬头看着我)”和第七段中“After that day, David started talking. He got friends in school and joined a bicycle club. He wrote to me a few times, about his biking with some friends, and about his plan to get into university. Now he had really started to live his own life.(从那天起,David开始说话了。他在学校交了朋友,还加入了一个自行车俱乐部。他给我写过几次信,讲他和一些朋友骑自行车的事,还讲了他上大学的计划。现在他真的开始过自己的生活了)”可知,几个月后,David从失去家人的痛苦中恢复过来,开始说话,交朋友,参加俱乐部,有了上大学的计划,开始过自己的生活。故选B项。

C
Here is a very surprising and significant fact: Mental work alone can’t make us tired. It sounds absurd (荒唐). But a few years ago, scientists tried to find out how long the human brain could labor (工作) without reaching a stage of fatigue (疲劳). To the amazement of these scientists, they discovered that blood passing through the brain, when it is active, shows no fatigue at all! If we took a drop of blood from a day laborer, we would find it full of fatigue toxins (毒素) and fatigue products. But if we took blood from the brain of an Albert Einstein, it would show no fatigue toxins at the end of the day.
So far as the brain is concerned, it can work as well and swiftly at the end of eight or even twelve hours of effort as at the beginning. The brain is totally tireless. So what makes us tired?
Some scientists say that most of our fatigue comes from our mental and emotional (情绪) attitudes. One of England’s most outstanding scientists, J.A. Hadfield, says, “The greater part of the fatigue from which we suffer is of mental origin (起源). In fact, fatigue of purely physical origin is rare.” Dr. Brill, a famous American scientist, goes even further. He says, “One hundred percent of the fatigue of sitting worker in good health is due to emotional problems.”
What kinds of emotions make sitting workers tired? Joy? Satisfaction? No! A feeling of being bored, anger, anxiety, tenseness, worry, a feeling of not being appreciated — those are the emotions that tire sitting workers. Hard work by itself seldom causes fatigue. We get tired because our emotions produce nervousness in the body.
28. What surprised the scientists a few years ago?
A. The brain could work for many hours without fatigue.
B. Albert Einstein didn’t feel worn after a day’s work.
C. Fatigue toxins could hardly be found in a worker’s blood.
D. A mental worker’s blood was filled with fatigue toxins.
29. What did scientists discover about the human brain’s fatigue?
A. The brain produces a lot of fatigue toxins during activity.
B. Fatigue toxins in the brain make people feel tired quickly.
C. The brain shows no fatigue toxins even after long hours of work.
D. Blood from a day laborer has fewer fatigue toxins than that from a scientist.
30. What makes sitting workers tired, according to Dr. Brill?
A. Fatigue toxins in their blood.
B. Emotional problems like boredom and anxiety.
C. Physical problems from sitting for long hours.
D. Too much mental work every day.
31. What’s the author’s attitude towards the scientists’ idea?
A. Doubtful. B. Indifferent. C. Opposing. D. Supportive.
【答案】28 A 29. C 30. B 31. D
根据第一段中的“But a few years ago, scientists tried to find out how long the human brain could labor (工作) without reaching a stage of fatigue (疲劳). To the amazement of these scientists, they discovered that blood passing through the brain, when it is active, shows no fatigue at all!(但几年前,科学家们试图探究人类大脑在持续工作状态下能够保持活跃多久而不出现疲劳现象。令这些科学家们惊讶的是,他们发现当大脑处于活跃状态时,流经大脑的血液丝毫没有疲劳的迹象!)”可知,几年前,科学家们惊讶地发现人的大脑是不知疲倦的。故选A。
根据第二段“So far as the brain is concerned, it can work as well and swiftly at the end of eight or even twelve hours of effort as at the beginning. The brain is totally tireless.(就大脑而言,经过八小时甚至十二小时的高强度工作后,它仍能像刚开始时一样正常运转且反应迅速。大脑是完全不会疲劳的。)”可知,科学家们发现即使长时间工作,大脑也不会产生疲劳毒素。故选C。
【30题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“A feeling of being bored, anger, anxiety, tenseness, worry, a feeling of not being appreciated — those are the emotions that tire sitting workers. Hard work by itself seldom causes fatigue. We get tired because our emotions produce nervousness in the body.(一种感到无聊、愤怒、焦虑、紧张、担忧、觉得自己未被赏识的情绪——这些都是让久坐工作者感到疲惫的情绪。单靠辛苦工作本身很少会导致疲劳。我们之所以感到疲惫,是因为我们的这些情绪会在身体中引发紧张反应。)”可知,导致办公室职员感到疲倦的原因是诸如无聊和焦虑之类的情绪问题。故选B。
【31题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“Some scientists say that most of our fatigue comes from our mental and emotional (情绪) attitudes.(一些科学家认为,我们大部分的疲劳源自我们的心理和情绪状态。)”及最后一段的最后一句“We get tired because our emotions produce nervousness in the body. (我们之所以感到疲惫,是因为我们的这些情绪会在身体中引发紧张反应。)”可知,我们感觉到累是因为我们身体里产生了紧张的情绪,呼应了科学家们的观点,因此作者是赞同这个观点的。故选D。

上文“Create a weekly schedule.”(创建每周计划。)是第二条建议,即就是创建一周的时间表。G项“Then under each day, make a list of things to do each hour.”(然后在每一天下,列出每小时要做的事情。)是承接上文,在周计划之下,列好一周中的每天每个小时要做的事情,也开启下文“Include time that will be spent eating, sleeping and doing anything not related to school work.”(包括吃饭、睡觉和做任何与学业无关的事情的时间。)
再根据下文“If you don’t take a break, you may find yourself daydreaming or even falling asleep.”(如果你不休息一下,你可能会发现自己在做白日梦,甚至睡着了。) D项“Our brains are not meant to work for hours nonstop.”(我们的大脑不应该连续工作几个小时。)
上文“Also try to make time for friends and family.”(也尽量为朋友和家人腾出时间。) E项“Having a good support system will help with all the stress.”(拥有良好的支持系统将有助于缓解所有压力。)

“Not again!” Aliya shouted angrily, looking at the marks she had attained in her maths test.
It seemed as if failing in the math test had become a part and parcel of her life. Despite her efforts, she had been unable to perform well. Tears in her eyes, she quickly shoved (乱塞) the paper into her bag before any classmate could make a rude comment on her.
Effortlessly, using the back of her palm, she was wiping the tears when her teacher Mrs Leena noticed her. She came to Aliya’s desk and, in a soft voice, asked her to see her during the break time.
Wondering what it could be, Aliya waited impatiently for lunchtime. Finally, when the bell rang, she made her way to Mrs Leena. As soon as she saw Aliya, she gestured for her to sit on the empty chair beside her.
She carefully studied her face cleared her throat with a bright smile and said, “You seem to be anxious. I think I know what’s bothering you. If you allow me I think together we may come up with a good solution.”
With a puzzled look, she said, “Well ma’am, you know I have been struggling in maths since the beginning of the term. It seems as if no matter how hard I work, I am unable to get the desired result. I feel so upset,” she said sadly.
“You need not be so gloomy,” encouraged Mrs Leena. “With these three key ingredients: hard work, determination and resilience (韧性), you will move ahead and succeed. It’s always the first step that’s difficult, but once you decide not to look back and not give up, you will be successful, my dear. Come on, gather yourself and let’s work on it together.”
From that day onwards, Aliya worked hard, religiously following her teacher’s advice. By the time the final exams drew close, she had thoroughly revised her math book and well-prepared.

On the exam day, a fear of failure upset her stomach. Aliya's heart raced as she sat down in front of the desk. She took a deep breath, trying to recall the encouragement from Mrs. Leena. As she began the test, the questions seemed difficult at first, but she pushed through, step by step, using the strategies she had learned. With each question she completed, her confidence grew. By the end of the exam, Aliya felt a sense of accomplishment, not because she was sure she had aced it, but because she had faced her fears and given it her all.
She passed her math exam with an unbelievable A grade on her report card. The moment she saw the grade, tears of joy welled up in her eyes. It wasn't just a grade. It was a testament to her hard work, her teacher's unwavering support, and the resilience she had found within herself.
24. When he first met the author David ________.
A. looked a little nervous B. walked energetically
C. felt a little excited D. showed up with his teacher

C. Opposing. D. Supportive.

Smell: Each mood features a typical essential oil carefully selected to create a lovely atmosphere for the activities. Sight: Lovely and appealing food photography enriches every page of the book.
She carefully studied her face, cleared her throat with a bright smile and said, “You seem to be anxious.
