Lewes Public Library is one of them. This month, the library held events like discussions about books and current events, movie showings, poetry writing workshops. And Spanish-language discussions. For children, one of the most popular events this year was when a nature center brought in several special animals. Delaware Library also has a program to mail a free book to families with young children each month. The goal is to provide children with a large book collection in their home without having to pay for it themselves. In some communities, libraries are where people access social services. Wheaton Library, Maryland’s new public library, holds job fairs and partners with local organizations to help families get health insurance. People who cannot afford to buy their own laptop computers can borrow one from the library. Besides, many libraries have book stores where visitors can buy new and used books. The money raised goes back to supporting the libraries. A Best shopping malls in the world Here are some of the best shopping malls in the world. Yang and fellow theoretical physicist, Lee Tsung-Dao, were jointly awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1957 for their work in parity laws (宇称定律), which led to important discoveries regarding elementary particles — the building blocks of matter. Born in 1922 in Anhui Province, he was the oldest of five children and raised on the campus of Tsinghua University where his father was a professor of mathematics. As a teenager, Yang told his parents: “One day, I want to win the Nobel Prize.” He achieved that dream at the age of 35. Yang, having made essential contributions to modern physics, is recognized as one of the most distinguished physicists of the 20th century. His work with Robert Mills on the “Yang-Mills theory” (杨-米尔斯理论) laid the foundation for the Standard Model of particle physics and is regarded as one of the cornerstones of modern physics. Yang gave up his US citizenship, which he had obtained in 1964, and became a citizen of China in 2015, returning to the country where he grew up. Talking about the decision, Yang said, “My late father’s blood runs in my veins (血管). Chinese culture runs in my veins.” After he returned to Tsinghua University, he dedicated himself to the development of the Institute for Advanced Study, pouring great effort into the growth of basic disciplines like physics and the nurturing of talent, significantly impacting the reform and development of China’s higher education. The life of Yang Chen-Ning was that of an immortal legend — exploring the unknown with a timeless echo of a heart devoted to his nation, the obituary (讣告) said. Yang’s century-long journey represents an everlasting chapter shining among the stars of humanity. 24. What was Yang Chen-Ning awarded the Nobel Prize for in 1957? A. His discovery of new elements in modern physics. B. His research on the parity laws with another physicist. C. His contribution to the Standard Model of particle physics. D. His lifelong dedication to teaching at Tsinghua University. 25. What does the passage tell us about Yang’s early life? A. He grew up on a campus in China. B. He showed little interest in science as a child. C. He started his career at Tsinghua University. D. He was inspired by his father’s teaching of physics. 26. Why did Yang decide to give up his US citizenship? A. He wanted to live closer to his family. B He was offered a position in China. C. He hoped to promote Chinese education abroad. D. He felt proud of his Chinese heritage and culture. 27. What is the author’s attitude toward Yang Chen-Ning? A. Objective. B. Critical. C. Admiring. D. Regretful. B 25. A 26. D 27. 根据第一段中的“Yang and fellow theoretical physicist, Lee Tsung-Dao, were jointly awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1957 for their work in parity laws (宇称定律), which led to important discoveries regarding elementary particles — the building blocks of matter.(杨振宁与同为理论物理学家的李政道,因在宇称定律方面的研究共同获得1957年诺贝尔物理学奖,这项研究促成了关于基本粒子——构成物质的基本单元——的重要发现。)” 根据第二段中的“Born in 1922 in Anhui Province, he was the oldest of five children and raised on the campus of Tsinghua University where his father was a professor of mathematics.(他于1922年出生在安徽省,是家中五个孩子里的长子,在清华大学的校园里长大,其父是该校的数学教授。)” 故选A项。 根据第三段中的“Talking about the decision, Yang said, “My late father’s blood runs in my veins (血管). Chinese culture runs in my veins.” (谈及这个决定时,杨振宁说:“我身体里流着我先父的血液,流淌着中华文化的血液。”)”可知,杨振宁放弃美国国籍的原因是他为自己的中国血统与文化感到自豪。故选D项。 【27题详解】 推理判断题。根据第二段中的“Yang, having made essential contributions to modern physics, is recognized as one of the most distinguished physicists of the 20th century. (杨振宁对现代物理学作出了开创性贡献,被誉为20世纪最杰出的物理学家之一。)”及第四段中的“The life of Yang Chen-Ning was that of an immortal legend — exploring the unknown with a timeless echo of a heart devoted to his nation, the obituary (讣告) said. Yang’s century-long journey represents an everlasting chapter shining among the stars of humanity. (杨振宁的一生是一段不朽的传奇——以一颗矢志报国的赤诚之心探索未知,讣告上说。杨振宁的百年人生,书写了人类群星中熠熠生辉的不朽篇章)”可知,作者对杨振宁的态度是钦佩的。故选C项。 C Teacup dogs are becoming a popular fashion, but what many do not know is that teacup dogs are very often simply underdeveloped dogs. They are produced in order to create the smallest dogs possible at any costs. Sometimes, teacup dogs are the result of breeding (繁殖) two very small dogs of a certain breed (品种). Giving birth to teacup dogs is extremely dangerous for the dogs and the mother. Because the mother is so small, she can only give birth to a few dogs and there are often birth diseases. Even worse, because teacup dogs are in such high demand and can be sold for such exorbitant prices, some people do develop teacup dogs by any means. Some even produce purposely underdeveloped dogs, or control the dogs’growth through methods like starvation. Because of teacup dogs’ unnaturally mini size, they often face a host of health issues. Their tiny bodies often are faced with so many digestive issues, resulting in the need to be fed small amounts, several times a day. Teacup dogs also often develop heart issues and health problems. They don’t live nearly as long as standard dogs. Since teacup dogs face so many health issues, taking preventive measures is essential, so you’ll be visiting the animal doctor much more often and paying much more than you would with a regular dog. And because teacup dogs are so tiny, it’s not uncommon for them to be accidentally killed by owners. A small drop or fall can injure them. Teacup dogs don’t know their tininess, so they will jump up on couches, and walk right underfoot with no warning. There are few experiences as sad as accidentally crushing (压坏) a beloved pet. While teacup dogs are becoming more popular, they are often treated as toys rather than living creatures. Teacup dogs often face short and painful lives, and their breeding should not be encouraged. 28. Which word can replace the underlined word “exorbitant” in paragraph 3? A. High. B. Cheap. C. Normal. D. Reasonable. 29. What is the main reason causing teacup dogs to live a short life? A. They don’t eat enough food. B. They are unhealthy animals. C. They are often killed by the owners. D. They like to jump from the high places. 30. How is the passage mainly developed? A. By explaining concepts. B. By quoting research findings. C. By making comparisons. D. By analyzing facts. 31. What would be the best title for the text? A. We Should Protect Teacup Dogs B. How to Breed Teacup Dogs Safely C. Why Should We Avoid Purchasing a Teacup Dog D. What Should We Do to Let Teacup Dogs Live Longer 【答案】28. A 29. B 30. D 31. 根据第三段中“Even worse, because teacup dogs are in such high demand and can be sold for such exorbitant prices, some people do develop teacup dogs by any means. (更糟糕的是,由于茶杯犬的需求量很大,而且可以以exorbitant的价格出售,一些人会不择手段地培育茶杯犬。)”可知,茶杯犬需求大,所以能以高价出售,因此,exorbitant在此应为“高的、过高的”之意,与“High”意思相近。故选A项。 根据第四段中“Because of teacup dogs’ unnaturally mini size, they often face a host of health issues. (由于茶杯犬非自然的迷你体型,它们往往会面临一系列健康问题。)”和“Since teacup dogs face so many health issues, taking preventive measures is essential, so you’ll be visiting the animal doctor much more often and paying much more than you would with a regular dog. (由于茶杯犬面临如此多的健康问题,采取预防措施是必不可少的,所以你会比养普通狗更频繁地去看动物医生,花费也会更多。)”以及“They don’t live nearly as long as standard dogs. (它们的寿命远不如普通狗长。)”可知,茶杯犬寿命短的主要原因是天生不健康,存在大量健康问题。故选B项。 【30题详解】 推理判断题。根据第二段中“Sometimes, teacup dogs are the result of breeding (繁殖) two very small dogs of a certain breed (品种). Giving birth to teacup dogs is extremely dangerous for the dogs and the mother. Because the mother is so small, she can only give birth to a few dogs and there are often birth diseases. (有时候,茶杯犬是由某一品种的两只体型非常小的狗繁殖而来的。对狗狗和母犬来说,生育茶杯犬是极其危险的。因为母犬体型太小,它只能生下几只小狗,而且常常会有先天性疾病。)”和第三段中“Some even produce purposely underdeveloped dogs, or control the dogs’growth through methods like starvation. (有些人甚至故意培育未发育完全的狗,或者通过饥饿等方法控制狗的生长。)”以及第四段中“Because of teacup dogs’unnaturally mini size, they often face a host of health issues. (由于茶杯犬非自然的迷你体型,它们往往会面临一系列健康问题。)”和第五段中“And because teacup dogs are so tiny, it’s not uncommon for them to be accidentally killed by owners. (而且由于茶杯犬体型非常小,它们被主人意外弄死的情况并不少见。)”可知,文章通过分析茶杯犬的繁殖、健康问题和易被主人意外伤害等事实来展开论述。故选D项。 【31题详解】 主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是最后一段“While teacup dogs are becoming more popular, they are often treated as toys rather than living creatures. Teacup dogs often face short and painful lives, and their breeding should not be encouraged. D The earliest evidence of humans walking upright (直立地) is fossilized footprints. They were left by someone walking through the mud nearly 3.7 million years ago. And a study suggests that early humans did not walk alone. Walking on two legs is a typically human thing to do. “It’s a very strange way of moving round the world,” said McNutt. She studies upright walking and says most four-legged creatures find it challenging. “If you imagine asking a dog to do that, it’s really unsteady. It’s really uncomfortable. It doesn’t want to do that,” she said. Yet humans did it early in their history. For example, at one site in Tanzania, a volcanic eruption over 3.5 million years ago covered the landscape with ash and preserved all kinds of tracks that had been left in the mud. “All kinds of creatures walked across this landscape, and they left these amazing footprints, including one set of footprints that look quite human,” said McNutt. “And the tracks have been reconstructed to belong to a hominin, an early human ancestor. And this is the same species that the quite famous fossilized Lucy belongs to.” When these were discovered back in the 1970s, workers also found five footprints that looked more mysterious. Researchers figured that these prints were created by a small bear walking upright. McNutt and her colleagues decided to re-examine them using modern technology. Their results turn out that the fossilized footprints just aren’t bear-like. Instead, there are signs of more human-like features, such as a big toe. “The nature of fossilized footprints and how these tracks are made can show that they’re in the same layer of mud. So these are likely made within the range of hours to days from one another.” Stephanie Mclillo says, “We see there the presence of two different kinds of hominin ancestors together in the same environment, in the same place, at the same time. And I don’t think that we really have a good answer to why our ancestors started walking upright yet.” 32. Why does McNutt mention a dog in paragraph 2? A. To highlight an experiment. B. To support her argument. C. To present an assumption. D. To praise its loyalty. 33. What can we know about fossilized Lucy? A. It is not a famous name. B. It was discovered by accident. C. It has the footprints of hominins. D. It contains the bear-like footprints. 34. Why did McNutt re-examine the fossilized tracks discovered in Tanzania? A. To study why humans walk upright. B. To determine who left the footprints. C. To research the behaviors of chimpanzees. D. To distinguish between two early human species. 35. Where can we read this passage? A. A guide book. B. A textbook. C. An English-learning magazine. D. A science magazine. B 33. C 34. B 35. 根据第二段中的“Walking on two legs is a typically human thing to do. “It’s a very strange way of moving round the world,” said McNutt. She studies upright walking and says most four-legged creatures find it challenging. “If you imagine asking a dog to do that, it’s really unsteady.(直立行走是人类独有的行走方式。麦克纳特说:“这是一种非常奇特的移动方式。”她研究直立行走,并称大多数四肢行走的生物都觉得这种方式很有难度。“你可以想象让一只狗直立行走,它会非常不稳。)”可知,麦克纳特提到狗是为了佐证自己的观点,即直立行走对四肢动物而言难度大,是人类的典型特征。故选B项。 【33题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段中的“And the tracks have been reconstructed to belong to a hominin, an early human ancestor. And this is the same species that the quite famous fossilized Lucy belongs to.(这些脚印经复原后被证实属于人科动物,也就是早期人类祖先。而著名的露西化石也属于这一物种。)”可知,露西化石所属的物种和留下人类脚印的人科动物是同一类,其带有早期人类祖先的脚印特征。故选C项。 【34题详解】 推理判断题。根据第四段中的“When these were discovered back in the 1970s, workers also found five footprints that looked more mysterious. Researchers figured that these prints were created by a small bear walking upright.(当这些脚印在20世纪70年代被发现时,工作人员还发现了五个更为神秘的脚印。研究人员原本认为这些脚印是一只直立行走的小熊留下的。)”以及第五段中的“McNutt and her colleagues decided to re-examine them using modern technology. Three generations of men in my family were doctors. I heard stories of the lives my grandfather had saved and I heard similar tales about my father. As Dad grew ever more godlike in my mind, so did the force of the expectation that I would follow in the family tradition. But as college neared, I began to feel that becoming a doctor was not what I really wanted to do. I didn’t dare tell him about my uncertainty. With the weight heavy on my mind the summer before college, I was given a challenge that I hoped would be a distraction. Dad kept several bird dogs which I trained on our farm. As usual, Dad turned Jerry over to me. “See what you can do with him,” he said. I didn’t anticipate problems. Jerry was a willing dog of about ten months. The first part of his training was easy. He mastered the basics: sit, stay, down, walk. His only problem was “come”. I’d call “Jerry! Here!” He would turn and look at me, then go on about his business. In the following days, I noticed he would just take off through the grass, fast as a wild thing. Despite my intense desire to train him well, I began to feel a strange sense of joy when he ran. “Why won’t he do what I want him to?” I asked myself. I had never failed with a dog before, but I was surely failing now. When September came, I finally had to tell Dad that this bird dog wouldn’t hunt. The thought that I had failed us both made me guilty. “Son, I know this dog doesn’t do what he should,” he said, “but what he does do is something he likes.” He continued to look at me firmly. For a moment I felt he could see into my very heart. 注意: 1.续写词数应为150左右; 2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 “Dad, I don’t think I can do medicine,” I took a solid breath. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ He gave me a tight hug, said good night and left me. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】“Dad, I don't think I can do medicine,” I took a solid breath. Hearing this, he lowered his eyes, obviously disappointed. He appeared so sad that I almost felt close to tears. But to my great relief, his face lit up when he looked at me again. Staring at Jerry beside his feet, he said gently, “Think about Jerry, son. You expected him to be the hunter you trained him to be. But he just isn't. It is a good thing, and now we’ll just wait to see how you run.” He gave me a tight hug, said good night and left me. At that moment I understood my father as I never had before, and the love and trust I felt seemed to fill the room. I looked at Jerry, asleep, his legs stretching suddenly as if to be running even in his dreams. To him, running was a great honor and birds no longer mattered to him. To me, being a doctor is not my ideal choice, but new ones await me in the future. 词汇激活 行为类 深呼吸:take a solid breath / take a deep breath 在旁边:beside /next to 重要:matter/count 情绪类 悲伤:sad/sorrowful 理想:ideal /dream 【点睛】[高分句型1] Hearing this, he lowered his eyes, obviously disappointed. B Yang Chen-Ning, Nobel winner and one of the world’s most influential physicists, died at the age of 103. B. He was offered a position in China. C. He hoped to promote Chinese education abroad. D. He felt proud of his Chinese heritage and culture. 27. What is the author’s attitude toward Yang Chen-Ning? A. Objective. B. Critical. C. Admiring. D. Regretful. C Teacup dogs are becoming a popular fashion, but what many do not know is that teacup dogs are very often simply underdeveloped dogs. Even worse because teacup dogs are in such high demand and can be sold for such exorbitant prices, some people do develop teacup dogs by any means. What Should We Do to Let Teacup Dogs Live Longer D The earliest evidence of humans walking upright (直立地) is fossilized footprints. B. A textbook. C An English-learning magazine. D. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
