B
At my first lesson in Chinese calligraphy, my teacher told me plainly: “Now I will teach you how to write your name. And to make it beautiful.” I felt my breath catch. I was curious.
Growing up in Singapore, I had an unusual relationship with my Chinese name. My parents are ethnically Chinese, so they asked fortune tellers to decide my name, aiming for maximum luck. As a result, I ended up with a nonsense and embarrassing name: Chen Yiwen, meaning, roughly, “old”, “barley (薏米)” and “warm”.
When I arrived in America for college at 18, I put on an American accent and abandoned my Chinese name. When I moved to Hong Kong in 2021, after 14 years in the States, I decided to learn calligraphy. Why not get back in touch with my heritage? I thought.
In calligraphy, the idea is to copy the old masters’ techniques, thereby refining your own. Every week, though, my teacher would give uncomfortably on-the-nose assessments of my person. “You need to be braver,” he once observed. “Have confidence. Try to produce a bold stroke(笔画).” For years, I had prided myself on presenting an image of confidence, but my writing betrayed me.
I was trying to make sense of this practice. You must visualize the word as it is to be written and leave a trace of yourself in it. As a bodily practice, calligraphy could go beyond its own cultural restrictions. Could it help me go beyond mine? My teacher once said to me, “When you look at the word, you see the body. Though a word on the page is two-dimensional, it contains multitudes, conveying the force you’ve applied, the energy of your grip, the arch of your spine.” I had been learning calligraphy to get in touch with my cultural roots, but what I was really seeking was a return to myself. Now I have sensed that the pleasure out of calligraphy allows me to know myself more fully.
During a recent lesson, my teacher pointed at the word I had just finished, telling me: “This word is much better. I can see the choices you made, your calculations, your flow. Trust yourself. This word is yours.” He might as well have said, “This word is you.”
4. What did the author initially think of her name “Chen Yiwen”?
A. It was lucky so she gladly accepted it. B. She felt proud of its symbolic meaning.
C. She understood the intention but still disliked it. D. Its strange pronunciation made her embarrassed.
5. The author decided to learn calligraphy to ______.
A. pick up a new hobby B. reconnect with her origin
C. gain insights into a new culture D. fit in with local community
6. From the teacher’s words, the author learns that calligraphy ______.
A. reflects the creator’s spirits B. comes from creative energy
C. highlights the design of strokes D. depends on continuous practice
7. What does the author intend to tell us?
A. Appreciate what our culture offers. B. Find beauty from your inner self.
C. A great teacher leads you to truth. D. We are the sum of what we create.
【答案】4. C 5. B 6. A 7. B

C
Red pandas live in forests where they prefer to be near water and have a good supply of bamboo. They are mostly active in the late evening and early morning, and they sleep during most of the day. They take the trees for shelter and to hide from predators (捕食者).
About 98% of a red panda’s main food is bamboo. They need a lot of it to survive — around 2 kilograms each day. However, finding enough bamboo is difficult as the red panda’s habitat becomes smaller. When people move into the red panda’s area, they clear forests for housing, farming and mining.
Natural disasters such as landslides, floods, heavy snow and rainfall have also destroyed their habitats. Forest fires and issues with bamboo flowering have similar effects on the red panda’s habitat. As people move into the area, they often collect bamboo, leaving less for red pandas to eat.
Although the red panda is endangered, steps are being made to save the species and its habitat. China has 46 protected areas, covering about 65% of the species’ habitat in the country. With worldwide support, there are at least 19 protected areas in India, 5 in Bhutan and 3 in Myanmar.
The Red Panda Network is a nonprofit organization that protects red pandas and their habitat. They work with local community groups to establish wildlife feeding centers, train forest protectors, and work with villagers to establish protected areas. The WWF is also working to protect red pandas. Because more than a third of its habitat is in Nepal, the group works with yak herders (牦牛牧民) there to lower their effect on the red panda’s habitat.
8. Why is it challenging for red pandas to find enough food?
A. They are not active hunters. B. Their habitats are short of water.
C. Their habitats are threatened. D. They struggle to identify bamboos.
9. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. Global efforts to protect red pandas. B. Serious situations faced by red pandas.
C. Asia’s official protection of red pandas. D. China’s advantage in keeping red pandas.
10. What does the Red Panda Network do?
A. Force yak herders to move away. B. Offer support to the local groups.
C. Attract people to feed red pandas. D. Help experts to carry out research.
11 What is a suitable title for the text?
A. The Reason for Decrease of Red Pandas B. The Influence of Habitats on Red Pandas
C. The Threat and Protection of Red Pandas D. The Key Points for Red Pandas’ Survival
【答案】8. C 9. A 10. B 11. C
【解析】

However, finding enough bamboo is difficult as the red panda’s habitat becomes smaller.(大约98%的小熊猫的主要食物是竹子。
根据第四段“Although the red panda is endangered, steps are being made to save the species and its habitat. China has 46 protected areas, covering about 65% of the species’ habitat in the country. With worldwide support, there are at least 19 protected areas in India, 5 in Bhutan and 3 in Myanmar.(虽然小熊猫濒临灭绝,但人们正在采取措施拯救这个物种及其栖息地。中国有46个保护区,覆盖了全国约65%的物种栖息地。在全世界的支持下,印度至少有19个保护区,不丹有5个,缅甸有3个)”可知,第四段的主要内容是全球为保护小熊猫付出的努力。故选A项。

D
Telling jokes requires creativity, smartness, imagination and the ability to tell a story. Listening to jokes demands attention, brainpower and being in the right state of mind to enjoy jokes. Besides, there are also clear similarities between joke tellers and appreciators. A new study tries to find other connections between creating and appreciating humor.
The author carried on the cartoon caption (字幕) task. 159 subjects were shown 30 cartoons without captions and were asked to come up with funny captions. Later, researchers rated those captions based on how funny they were.
The results showed that creating funny captions was negatively (负面地) related to appreciation of humor. In other words, funny people tend to find jokes less funny than other people do. It is not clear why this is the case. However, one possibility is that creators of great humor have higher standards of humor creativity. They also expect higher levels of creativity from people who tell jokes, compared to those who are not so good at creating humor.
Moreover, outgoing people and those who are open to new experiences found the cartoons funnier. But surprisingly, outgoing people are less likely to be funny. This is in agreement with my own research that performers in the field of comedy were more introverted than the general population. They usually don’t like to express themselves in social situations.
Appreciation and creation of humor are two different tasks. This is why when someone tells you he or she has a great sense of humor, you may ask, “Are you good at telling jokes or do you enjoy laughing more?”
12. Which quality is shared by joke tellers and appreciators?
A. Attention. B. Creativity. C. Imagination . D. Smartness.
13. What can we learn about the study from Paragraph 2?
A. Its value. B. Its process. C. Its effects. D. Its findings.
14. What can be inferred about funny people?
A They expect to hear quality jokes. B. They turn out to be less creative.
C. They struggle to understand jokes. D. They have low standards of humor.
15. What does the underlined word “introverted” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A. Quiet and reserved. B. Open and easygoing.
C. Social and creative. D. Funny and outgoing.
【答案】12. D 13. B 14. A 15. A
【解析】

前文“Learning English can be challenging. However, with proper methods, it can be manageable. (学习英语是很有挑战性的。然而,通过适当的方法,它可以是可控的)”表明学习英语虽有挑战但用对方法可应对,后文具体介绍各种方法,因此D项“Below are some tips to help you master it (下面是一些帮助你掌握它的技巧)”符合语境,承前启后,其中的it指代前文的English。故选D。
【17题详解】
前文“According to research, immersion is one of the best ways to learn a new language.

故选A。

One morning in spring four students were walking to school.
There had been a rain, and the ground was very soft. Water was dropping from the trees, and the grass was wet.
The four students walked along, one behind another, because the pathway was narrow (狭窄的) and the mud (泥) on either side of it was deep. They walked, talked and laughed.
As they were passing through some small trees, they heard a great fluttering (拍翅膀) over their heads and a weak chirping (鸣叫) in the grass by the roadside.
“Tweet! Tweet! Tweet!” came from the leafy branches above them.“Cheep! Cheep! Cheep!” came from the wet grass.
“What is the matter here? ” asked the first student, whose name was Speed. “Oh, there are two young birds. Maybe the storm has blown two of the little ones out of the nest. They are too young to fly, ” said the second student, whose name was Hardin.
“What a pity! They'll die down there in the grass,” said the third student Martin.
“Oh, well! We still need to hurry to school. We're going to be late,” said Speed. “Why should we bother? ” After Speed's words, the first three students walked on, talking and laughing as before.

【答案】But the fourth student, whose name was David, stopped. He bent down and very gently took the little ones up in his warm hands. “Never mind, my little fellows, ” said David. “I will put you in your own cozy little bed.” Then he looked up to find the nest from which they had fallen. It was high, much higher than he could reach. But David could climb. He had climbed many a tree when he was a boy. He put the birds softly, one by one, into their warm little home. At this time, the first three students had already reached school.
All were surprised to find that David was not with them when the roll call (点名) was made. Just when the teacher was to be angry, Hardin explained, “We met two fallen birds on our way to school. Very likely David has stopped to take care of them.” In a few minutes, David appeared at the door of the classroom out of breath. His shoes were covered with mud, and he had torn his coat on the thorny tree. Just as he was about to accept the teacher's criticism, to his surprise, all the students sang the song Hero with the “Tweet! Tweet! ” and “Cheep! Cheep!” sound from the birds outside the classroom.

9 What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
11. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. The Reason for Decrease of Red Pandas B. The Influence of Habitats on Red Pandas
C. The Threat and Protection of Red Pandas D. The Key Points for Red Pandas’ Survival
