Is everybody on board? Great! Please take your seats and let’s get going. I won’t talk for long, as our destination is only a twenty-minute bus ride from our hotel here in central Stockholm. Today we’re visiting Skansen, the world’s oldest open-air museum as a living museum provides us with a picture of ordinary Swedish life before the industrial age. The site features over one hundred fifty historical buildings brought to the museum from all over the country. Activities take place each day in both Swedish and English. They are given by actors in traditional costumes, which really brings the history to life. Skansen is the world’s only open-air museum with wild animals and the Nordic zoo features many types of local wildlife, such as deer and bears. There’s also a children’s zoo. The Skansen aquarium also has fish, plus many other creatures such as snakes, insects and monkeys. Unfortunately, this isn’t included in our entry price, but adult tickets cost just one hundred sixty kronor, about twenty of your Canadian dollars.

In the remote town of Yangla, located over 3,000 meters above sea level in the mountains of Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province, 32-year-old doctor Nasheng is devoted to providing healthcare to more than 5,400 villagers.
Nasheng graduated in Tibetan medicine from Qinghai University in Qinghai Province. Her passion for the field was inspired after witnessing the difficulties faced by her fellow villagers. “I saw how difficult it was for my family to access medical treatment in inland areas — long journeys, language barriers, and cultural differences made it even harder,” she said.
When she arrived at the Yangla Town health center in September 2021, she was struck by the isolation (隔绝) of the area. Her accommodation is a simple room inside the inpatient ward. Other than a barbecue restaurant, there are no other entertainment options in town.
Although Yangla Town has a small population, its villages are spread across more than 1,000 square kilometers, often requiring several hours of travel by car to reach each one.
This made Nasheng aware that even though the village had a health station, many residents still struggled to reach it due to the area’s vastness. “What if there were another station here?” she wondered. After submitting a proposal, and with support from the local government, a basic health station was established in June 2022. “Now the service station has moved into a new building, and a village doctor is seeing patients there,” Nasheng said. The Yangla Town health center also organizes mobile free clinics in different villages every month, supported by a committed team of over 20 staff members.
Looking ahead, she hopes to continue her studies. “I want to pursue a master’s degree and learn more about acupuncture (针灸) techniques,” she said. “But no matter what, I’ll always come back — this is my home.”
24.What motivated Nasheng to study Tibetan medicine?
A.Cultural differences. B.Healthcare challenges.
C.Her family’s pressure. D.Fellow villagers’ poverty.
25.What can we know about Yangla Town?
A.It is cut off from big cities. B.It is an entertainment center.
C.It has various medical facilities. D.It has a concentrated population.
26.How did Nasheng improve healthcare?
A.By launching an initiative. B.By training a medical team.
C.By building a new health station. D.By organizing mobile free clinics.
27.What might be the best title for the text?
A.Home Above 3,000 Meters B.Building Trust in a Remote Village
C.The Challenges of Rural Medical Services D.Bringing Hope to a Remote Mountain Town
【答案】24.B 25.A 26.A 27.D

故选A项。

C
It took me more than 10 years to realize that the world has no shortage of fashion (时尚) designers who have the ability to make trendy and elegant garments, but that it is badly in need of, simply, clothes designers. My own definitions would set fashion and clothing greatly apart. It is a fact that, in the shopping malls, there are plenty of beautiful garments whose unpredictability makes our life colorful and interesting. You are almost convinced: You can buy whatever you dare to think.
There is no doubt that fashion designers are usually with high qualifications. They study fashion trends, select colors, and make sure the final production of their designs is done properly. However, as experience grew with age, my attraction to arts became ever stronger. I have a strong desire for clothing to stand as does paint to the painter, as does stone to the sculptor, as a simple and particular language of an individual creation, which draws the audience from an appreciation of the surface to deeper thoughts with the world of the soul. I believe that the most meaningful creative motives should arise through caring for other people, the great care of humanity — a concern for human feeling and spirituality. This includes love, but it is bigger than love, and it is unconditional. I believe the greatest works of art can touch the deepest and strongest parts of human feelings and the world of the spirit, and only these works can be the memories of history, preserving the most valuable feelings that have ever existed, and inspiring a greater awareness of ourselves.
I am not satisfied if people only appreciate clothing if it merely satisfies their desire. I believe clothing could be a specific creative language for communicating ideas and thoughts, for inspiring you and shaping your behavior. Those clothes fashioned out of necessity possess a power that can continue to exist across the ages. This is what I have tried to achieve, the clothing to return to its original simplicity, the clothing to help people regain the natural sense. The true fashion today should not follow the trends. It should instead uncover the extraordinary in the ordinary, for. I believe the pleasure you get from the clothing is not its price, but its spirit.
28.According to the writer, most fashion designers are ______.
A.lack of imagination B.deep in thought C.unproductive D.trendy
29.By saying “This includes love” in Paragraph 2, the writer regards “love” as ______.
A.a very important part of the spiritual world
B.a form of concern for human feeling and spirituality
C.one of the most meaningful creative motivations
D.what can be achieved through the works of hand
30.The writer indicates that the primitive clothes are made as a result of ______.
A.respect for nature B.spiritual value C.necessity D.simplicity
31.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.Humanity is fundamental in fashion design.
B.The growing fashion trends present human interest.
C.Designers must concern for the desire of consumers.
D.Fashion clothes have close relations with earth predictions.
【答案】28.D 29.B 30.C 31.A

根据第二段中“I believe the greatest works of art can touch the deepest and strongest parts of human feelings and the world of the spirit, and only these works can be the memories of history, preserving the most valuable feelings that have ever existed, and inspiring a greater awareness of ourselves.(我相信最伟大的艺术作品能够触及人类情感最深、最强烈的部分和精神世界,也只有这些作品才能成为历史的记忆,保留曾经存在过的最有价值的情感,并激发更多的认识。我们自己。)”可推知,通过在第2段中说“这包括爱”,作者将“爱”视为对人类情感和精神的关注,故选B。

D
Before uploading a photo of ourselves to social media, the chances are that we’ll use an app to smooth our skin, enlarge our eyes, and sharpen our jawlines. With a couple of taps on our mobile phones, we can get a quick fix and present the “best” version of ourselves to the world. However, the problem is that when we simply edit out our imperfections, we’re also changing the way we look at ourselves.
Last month, researchers published the article Selfies—Living in the Era of Filtered Photographs. The article analyzed photo editing apps’ bad influences on people’s self-respect and their possibility of causing anxiety about appearance. The researchers also warned that such apps might make the young generation misjudge themselves. “These apps allow one to change his or her appearance in minutes and follow an unrealistic standard of beauty,” the article read.
In the past, people may have compared their looks to those of famous persons. But for today’s young people, beauty standards are most likely set by what they see on social media. “From birth, they are born into an age of social platforms where their feelings of self-worth can be based purely on the number of likes and followers that they have, which is linked to how good they look,” British cosmetic doctor Tijion Esho told The Independent. This is why many young people suffer an identity trouble when it comes to appearance.
“Now you’ve got this daily comparison of your real self to the fake self that you present on social media,” Renee Engeln, professor of psychology, told the HuffPost website. Engeln further pointed out that when people spent too much time making such comparisons, they might become “beauty sick” and find it difficult to accept what they actually look like. “Because between you and the world is a mirror, and it’s a mirror that travels with you everywhere. You can’t seem to put it down,” she told The Washington Post. So when we look at ourselves in a real mirror, we shouldn’t think, “Do I look as good as myself in the filtered photos?” Instead, we should think, “I feel good; I have my health.”
32.Before uploading a photo to social media, what will we probably do?
A.We will probably have an operation to make our eyes look bigger.
B.We will probably use a cream to smooth our skin.
C.We will probably use an app to fix our photos.
D.We will probably edit some text.
33.What can we learn from Paragraph 2?
A.In many ways, photo editing apps are beneficial to people.
B.Photo editing apps are likely to cause people’s anxiety about their appearance.
C.Photo editing apps can make us more beautiful.
D.Photo editing apps help people judge realistic beauty.
34.When it comes to appearance, why do many young people suffer an identity trouble?
A.Because they compare their looks to those of famous persons.
B.Because beauty standards are set by social media.
C.Because their feelings of self-worth depend on their own likes and dislikes.
D.Because their feelings of self-worth depend on their appearance.
35.According to Engeln, we should ________.
A.feel good about what we actually look like
B.spend more time making comparisons of our real self to the fake self
C.take a mirror with us everywhere
D.try to look as good as ourselves in the filtered photos
【答案】32.C 33.B 34.D 35.A
根据第一段第一句“Before uploading a photo of ourselves to social media, the chances are that we’ll use an app to smooth our skin, enlarge our eyes, and sharpen our jawlines.(在把自己的照片上传到社交媒体之前,我们很有可能会用一款应用来光滑皮肤、放大眼睛、削尖下巴)”可知,在上传照片到社交媒体之前,我们可能会使用一个应用程序来修我们的照片。故选C。

根据第三段中““From birth, they are born into an age of social platforms where their feelings of self-worth can be based purely on the number of likes and followers that they have, which is linked to how good they look,” British cosmetic doctor Tijion Esho told The Independent. This is why many young people suffer an identity trouble when it comes to appearance.(“从出生起,他们就生活在一个社交平台的时代,在这个时代,他们的自我价值感完全取决于他们拥有的点赞和粉丝的数量,这与他们的外表有多好有关,”英国美容医生蒂杰恩·埃索在接受《独立报》采访时表示。这就是为什么许多年轻人在外表方面会遇到身份问题)”可知一谈到外表,许多年轻人都有身份问题,因为他们的自我价值感取决于他们的外表。故选D。
35.推理判断题。根据最后一段中“So when we look at ourselves in a real mirror, we shouldn’t think, “Do I look as good as myself in the filtered photos?” Instead, we should think, “I feel good; I have my health.”(所以当我们对着镜子看自己的时候,我们不应该想,“我看起来和过滤后的照片一样好吗?”相反,我们应该这样想:“我感觉很好;我有我的健康。”)”可知,根据Engeln的观点,我们应该满足于自己的实际外表。故选A。

【答案】36.F 37.G 38.D 39.E 40.A
36.根据空格前的内容“It can often feel like no matter what you do, you just can't get enough of sleep to wake up feeling refreshed. What can you do about it? (你可能无论如何都无法得到足够的睡眠,从而让自己早上醒来时精力充沛。你能为这个做什么?)”可知,F项(答案就像你妈妈给你的建议一样简单:早点睡觉)是对空格前句的回答,空格后的“Try the following strategies, so nothing stands between you and your bed each night.(尝试以下策略,这样每晚你就能正常地按时入睡)”是在引出下文的“如何做到早睡”。故选F。
37.根据本段的小标题“Pamper (娇宠) yourself(娇宠一下自己)”和空格后的内容“Think: cozy pajamas that you can't wait to put on at night and a luxurious sheet set that makes your bedroom feel like a five-star hotel.(想想晚上迫不及待要穿上的舒适睡衣和让你的卧室感觉像五星级酒店的豪华床单套装)”可知,G项(激励自己上床睡觉的一种方法是给自己一些值得期待的东西)是在说明“如何娇宠一下自己”,且下文中的“舒适的睡衣”和“豪华的床单”这两个例子是对G项中的“ something to look forward to”的举例说明。故选G。
38.根据本段的小标题“Program your thermostat(设置好你的自动调温器)”和空格后的内容“And your body temperature naturally declines as you prepare for sleep. So if you keep your thermostat higher during the day, setting a smart thermostat to drop the temperature of the house at a certain time each night can help to remind your body when it's bedtime.(当你准备睡觉时,你的体温会自然下降。因此,如果你在白天将调温器的温度保持在较高的水平,那么对恒温器进行智能设置以在每晚的特定时间降低房屋的温度,这样可以帮助提醒你该睡觉了)”可知,D项(温度低的时候睡得最好)是“设置好你的自动调温器”的目的所在,下文中的“降低室内温度提醒你去睡觉”与该项衔接通顺。故选D。
39.根据空格前的内容“Babies aren't the only ones who can benefit from a good lullaby.(婴儿并不是唯一可以从好的催眠曲中受益的人)”和空格后的内容“Download a sleepy-time playlist to your phone, and then let it do its thing.(将帮助睡眠的播放列表下载到你的手机,然后让它发挥作用)”可知,E项(轻音乐可以帮助成年人放松并更快入睡)与本段小标题(听放松的音乐)相呼应,承接上文,说明音乐能够促进很多人睡眠质量的提高,下文是具体的操作办法。故选E。
40.根据该段落的“Yes, a real, made-of-paper book. While you can get just about any reading material on electronic devices like smart phones these days, the blue light they give out can keep you up at night. If you just can’t go back to turning pages, consider an e-reader that doesn't have a bright screen, like a basic Kindle.(是的,一本真正的纸制书。虽然如今你几乎可以在智能手机等电子设备上获得任何阅读材料,但它们发出的蓝光会让你彻夜难眠。如果你无法翻开书看,请考虑使用没有明亮屏幕的电子阅读器,例如常规的 Kindle)可知,本段主要是说睡前看书(最好是纸质书)有利于睡眠。A项(睡觉前看看书)能够准确概括段落内容。故选A。

It is a vivid example of the harmonious blend of rural and urban cultures.
56.a 57.which 58.consisting 59.assumption 60.for 61.have committed/have been committing 62.were exposed 63.trends 64.gradually 65.to preserve
故填a。
故填which。
故填for。
故填have committed/have been committing。
故填were exposed。
trend为可数名词,空前无限定词,结合上文“to different fashion cultures through TV and the Internet”可知,此处使用名词复数形式表示泛指。故填trends。
此处为固定搭配resolve to do sth.,意为“决心做某事”,所以此处用动词不定式to preserve作宾语。故填to preserve。

Is appearance important?
Many people place a high value on appearance, because a physically attractive person can impress people. For example, a good-looking actor or actress can get noticed quickly. Moreover, a good appearance can boost our self-confidence. We feel good if we look good. However, there is a danger of attaching too much importance to appearance, as it does not always indicate what kind of character one has, or what skills one may possess. So in my opinion, we should take care of our physical appearance, but “Never judge a book by its cover.”

An Unexpected Angel
In the heat of 90 degrees Fahrenheit, I watched the elderly woman struggle with a walker, weighed down with bags of groceries. I was driving north, and she was walking south. I’d seen her before, but as a young lady, I would feel guilty each time I didn’t offer her a lift.
But how could I safely stop in the middle of a busy road to help anyone without blocking the late-afternoon traffic? That was my reasoning. It resolved my guilt... temporarily.
This day, however, the guilt got to me. I got into the far-left lane and made a U-turn. Slowing down,I opened the window and called out, “Need a ride?”
I knew I was upsetting the drivers around me, but I no longer cared. The woman looked tired, with sweat pouring down her tired face.
“Let me help you with your groceries,” I added.
Getting out of the car, I placed her walker and bags into my trunk (后备箱). I helped the woman into the passenger seat, and we were off.
After a few blocks and a bridge, we continued down unfamiliar streets until she finally pointed to an old apartment building where she lived. Several noisy young men in their early twenties had gathered around the entrance. They were smoking something and appeared threatening. Some were on motorcycles, and one, wearing his bushy, long hair, was staring at me intently — too intently — and smiling.
Hoodlum (小混混)! I thought I was getting more and more uncomfortable, but the woman in my car seemed fine. I stopped the car where she had indicated and opened the trunk. She directed a couple of the guys to help with her walker and groceries. She thanked me, and I drove away as fast as I could.
With GPS, I drove slowly and turned on the radio playing some familiar music. Suddenly the peaceful atmosphere was interrupted by the roar of a motorcycle behind me. I must admit it made me nervous. Slowing down, I was hoping he would pass me. I recognized the biker from the apartment house — the one with bushy hair who kept smiling at me familiarly.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
I was forced to pull over to the side of the lonely road.

I was forced to pull over to the side of the lonely road. My heart raced with fear as I watched the biker approach my car. He stopped his motorcycle, took off his helmet, and walked towards me with that same strange smile. I rolled down the window slightly, ready to drive away at any moment. But to my surprise, he reached into his pocket and pulled out my wallet. “You dropped this at the apartment,” he said. I was shocked. I hadn’t even realized I’d lost it. I felt a rush of embarrassment for misjudging him.
Obviously, the young man came to return it. I thanked him from the bottom of my heart, feeling a deep sense of shame for my initial thoughts. Sensing it, he just laughed and said, “We may look rough, but we’ re not bad guys.” His words made me realize I shouldn’t judge people by their appearance. As he rode away, I sat there for a moment, reflecting on this unexpected encounter. This experience taught me a valuable lesson about kindness and not making hasty judgments. Then, I drove off, feeling a newfound warmth in my heart.

Author Hank Phillippi Ryan’s appealing novel tells the story of Tess Calloway, a fictional author on a book tour to promote her debut (首次亮相) novel — “All This Could Be Yours”.
Tess, a mother of two, once had a well-paying job, but it left her feeling “invisible.” Living a dull and aimless daily routine, she was so overwhelmed by the growing emptiness that she finally made the bold decision to quit and pursue her long-cherished dream of becoming a novelist. In her writing, she created a heroic character named Annabelle — a woman who bravely “tries everything to pursue what she wishes with her ‘one life’.”
Tess poured into Annabelle the courage she herself had been missing, making the character a fearless reflection of the lost self she was determined to leave behind. Her novel quickly became a New York Times bestseller. During her tour, fans would enthusiastically cheer “One life!” at every stop, deeply inspired by Annabelle.
However, as her success grew, Tess was forced to face the inner void (空虚) she had fled from. Doubts about her own worth and fears of slipping back into aimlessness began to bite. Luckily, it was because she was empowered by the character she had crafted that Tess found the courage to confront her inner struggles.
When asked why she framed Tess’s story this way, Ryan smiled and said, “Tess isn’t just a character — she’s the echo of anyone who’s ever looked in the mirror and wondered, ‘Is this all?’” “Stories don’t hand you answers. They hand you a mirror — one that lets you see the parts you’ve been hiding, and the parts you might yet become. The rest? That’s up to the one holding the mirror,” She added.
24.What do we know about Hank Phillippi Ryan?
A.She has created a novelist.
B.Her book becomes a bestseller.
C.She is on a book tour for the novel.
D.She writes two novels with the same name.
25.What is the main reason for Tess to quit her job?

A.Workplace burnout. B.Personal transformation.
C.Literary success and glory. D.Fictional character creation.
27.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Fiction as a Mirror B.The Price of Fame
C.A Novelist’s Journey D.The Legend of Annabelle
C
In August 1914, days before the outbreak of the First World War, the renowned explorer Ernest Shackleton and a crew of twenty-seven set sail for the South Atlantic in pursuit of the last unclaimed prize in the history of exploration: the first crossing on foot of the Antarctic continent. Weaving a treacherous path through the freezing Weddell Sea, they had come within eighty-five miles of their destination when their ship, *Endurance*, was trapped fast in the ice pack. Soon the ship was crushed like matchwood, leaving the crew stranded on the floes (浮冰). Their ordeal would last for twenty months, and they would make two near-fatal attempts to escape by open boat before their final rescue.
Drawing upon previously unavailable sources, Caroline Alexander gives us a fascinating account of Shackleton’s expedition—one of history’s greatest epics of survival. And she presents the astonishing work of Frank Hurley, the Australian photographer whose visual record of the adventure has never before been published comprehensively. Together, text and image re-create the terrible beauty of Antarctica, the awful destruction of the ship, and the crew’s heroic daily struggle to stay alive, a miracle achieved largely through Shackleton’s inspiring leadership.
The survival of Hurley’s remarkable images is scarcely less miraculous: The original glass plate negatives, from which most of the book’s illustrations are superbly reproduced, were stored in hermetically sealed (密封的) canisters (胶卷盒) that survived months on the ice floes, a week in an open boat on the polar seas, and several more months buried in the snows of a rocky outcrop called Elephant Island. Finally, Hurley was forced to abandon his professional equipment; he captured some of the most unforgettable images of the struggle with a pocket camera and three rolls of Kodak film.
Published in conjunction with the American Museum of Natural History’s landmark exhibition on Shackleton’s journey, *The Endurance* thrillingly recounts one of the last great adventures in the Heroic Age of exploration—perhaps the greatest of them all.
28.What’s the job of Caroline Alexander?
A.Exploring the Antarctic continent.
B.Publishing the story of *Endurance*.
C.Setting down the story of the expedition.
D.Providing the visual record of the adventure.
29.What is NOT true about the expedition?
A.It was started by a group of brave explorers.
B.All the images were not lost due to the pocket camera.
C.Shackleton’s inspiring leadership made a miracle.
D.It is regarded as the greatest expedition in history.
30.Which word can be used to describe Frank Hurley?
A.Talented but fragile.
B.Trust-worthy but unemotional.
C.Kind-hearted and quick-witted.
D.Strong-minded and decisive.
31.What is the purpose of the passage?
A.To introduce a book.
B.To tell a story.
C.To illustrate a fact.
D.To share an experience.

Just imagine: apples fought with oranges on horseback. Our imaginations are capable of this — and much more. They are responsible for films and novels, as well as buildings and computers. They are incredibly powerful. And yet the imaginings themselves are hard to define.
Enter Adam Zeman, a neurologist whose book, The Shape of Things Unseen: A New Science of the Imagination, is a fine guide to the tricky science of the imagination. Zeman begins by saying that he wants to make this “accessible”; and he certainly pulls that off, but he has to do a lot of complicating in the process.
After all, while we might think of imagination as mostly a visual skill — a sort of “seeing” by “the mind’s eye” — there are instances where we smell something through “the mind’s nose”.
So Zeman takes us on a necessarily twisting path, explaining, complicating and tripping over various fences along the way. For a subject like the imagination, a certain width is to be expected, but his book is admirably wide-ranging. Zeman interviews novelists and astrophysicists He describes paintings and the functioning of synapses This is a book that concerns art almost as much as it concerns science. As Zeman says: “Science uses imagination to show us as far as possible, how things really are; art, just as importantly, to show us how they feel.”
If there is one thread running through the book, it is the notion that “the ‘real’ world is almost as much a product of our creative minds as its countless virtual cousins”. It’s a “predictive brain” that generates and updates mental models to anticipate the world around it.
There is, though, much else to mention, which is the major flaw here. For every explanation of how neural networks (神经网络) operate, there is a brief history of the greenhouse effect. For every detailed case study, there are short Wikipedia-ish passages. I would have preferred Zeman to expand on his thinking across two or three chapters, which is both a criticism and a compliment — if you can imagine such a thing.
32.What does Adam Zeman aim to achieve with his book?
A.To reveal the “predictive brain” is the key to imagination.
B.To explain how complicated the imagination is in science.
C.To help people easily grasp the science behind imagination.
D.To prove imagination is more important for art than science.
33.How does Zeman develop the subject of his book?
A.By listing the flaws of previous studies on imagination.
B.By comparing different types of imagination in daily life.
C.By sharing personal stories about his research on the brain.
D.By including conversations and discussions of art and science.
34.What does the underlined word “thread” in paragraph 5 mean?
A.A main theme.
B.A type of cloth.
C.A difficult problem.
D.A personal experience.
35.What do we know about the author’s comment on Zeman’s book?
A.The book’s wide range deserves praise.
B.The book could explore certain topics more deeply.
C.The admirable width of the book is a highlight of the book.
D.The Wikipedia-ish explanations should include more details.
Have you ever noticed how peaceful the world seems after a good snowfall and how quiet falls over the landscape whenever it snows? 36 Actually, snow does make the world quieter.
Some of the newfound quiet after a snowfall is logical. People tend to stay home and there are fewer cars on the road. And birds also keep quiet in their nests during snowstorms. 37 Snow absorbs sound, so when a fresh blanket of snow covers the landscape, it absorbs many of the sound waves, making it seem quieter outside, according to AccuWeather.
Sound absorption is rated on a scale of 0 to 1, AccuWeather reports. Something with a sound absorption rating of 0.5 absorbs 50 percent of sound, for example. The sound absorption rating of snow falls somewhere between 0.5 and 0.9. 38
However, not all snowfalls are equal when it comes to silencing the world outside. 39 Usually a few inches of snow is needed to have a noticeable quieting effect, according to AccuWeather.
40 The reason? The snowflakes change shape as they melt, reducing the size of the spaces between the crystals. As temperatures fluctuate (波动) in winter, newly fallen snow can partially melt and then freeze. Once the snow turns into ice, it can actually increase nearby sounds because ice reflects sound waves rather than absorbing them.
A.It’s not your mind playing tricks on you.
B.There’s science behind the silence as well.
C.As snow melts, it loses its silencing ability.
D.So silence after a fresh snowfall is temporary.
E.That means it absorbs much of the surrounding sound.
F.Just a dusting of snow isn’t enough to absorb much sound.
G.It’s better to experience the quiet than just admire it indoors.

When I first came to Rochester from Austin, Texas — a place where fall is practically non-existent — I was excited for a real northern fall. But I wasn’t 41 it to feel like Christmas in October.
Regardless of this 42 , and the adjustment period that I’m not entirely sure I’m 43 , I am thankful to be somewhere that has a real fall. By “real” I 44 a distinctive season, a(n) 45 in the weather and a visual changing of the world around me. The leaves 46 colors, it rains more often, the air is almost always 47 and dry, and a light breeze 48 me to walk a bit faster to get inside. Yes, it is more difficult to be 49 outside in a Rochester fall — where it isn’t just “less hot” but actually, fairly cold. But I would argue that time spent outside in this season could be more 50 than in the summer.
Everyone 51 that fall is about change — I won’t argue against that. Things do change in the fall — the weather is becoming worse and worse, the dying leaves become warmly colored, and 52 you know it, we’ll be back to having only eight hours of sunlight a day.
This oncoming change is why I think it is so important to 53 fall. Fall is not just about the 54 of change, but also appreciating what will soon be 55 . Go outside this fall. Enjoy the leaves not because they are turning beautiful deep shades of orange and red, but because there will soon be no leaves in those branches at all.

Videos of floodwaters flowing across the Taklimakan Desert in Northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and submerging (淹没) desert highways trended on Chinese social media platforms on Tuesday 56 sparked heated discussions online.
Circulating videos show floodwaters surging across a vast desert area, 57 vehicles struggling to wade through the water.
58 (locate) in deep inland areas, Xinjiang has a typical temperate continental climate with frequent drought and low levels of precipitation (降水). Data shows that the annual average precipitation in the Taklimakan Desert is 59 (little) than 100 millimeters, while the annual average evaporation (蒸发) level is 60 high as around 3,000 millimeters, according to ts.cn.
The flood was a mixed-type flood caused by the combination effect of glacier and snow meltwater. The 61 (continuous) rising temperatures caused mountain glaciers and snow 62 (melt). Some rivers reached or exceeded warning levels and formed floods.
In 63 (add), the western part of southern Xinjiang has experienced frequent rainfall since August 19, with heavy rains 64 (occur) in parts of the mountainous areas.
This isn’t the first time the Taklimakan Desert 65 (experience) flooding. In July 2021, floods affected an area of over 300 square kilometers in the desert.

Emily White was born seventeen years ago with so many birth problems in her body. Some of her organs, bones and muscles were out of shape. No one expected her to survive. She did make it but with her strange body figure, everyone could recognize her, even from a distance.
In Emily White’s hometown, there was a yearly outdoor performance in the school auditorium (大礼堂). It had been performed for so many years and actually had become one of the most important events of the Christmas season for many of the town’s people.
Many people tried out each year for it, but so many were turned away. It can only include the most excellent people in the field.
Emily had a beautiful singing voice. Last year she went to Mrs. Owens — her music teacher to ask to join in the performance. Without letting her sing, Mrs. Owens took a look at Amy’s body and said, “Child, you just don’t fit. Everyone would stare at you and that would make you uncomfortable. It would make them uncomfortable, too.”
Without singing a single note, Emily was sent back through the door of the choral room. Hurt and upset, she decided never to try out again. But Mrs. Owens then retired.
This year, there came a new music teacher, Mr. Buttler. He heard about Emily and suggested that she have a try.
Emily didn’t want to be rejected again, so she hesitated a little about it. As Emily struggled, the door was pushed open and Mr. Buttler called, “Emily, you’re next.” Although kind of nervous, Emily did as Mr. Buttler told her to do. Mr. Buttler sat by the piano to keep Emily company. When Emily finished her testing performance, she thanked Mr. Buttler and knew the result would be posted on the door of the choral room the next day.
Emily couldn’t sleep that night. She was suffering from the feelings that she didn’t fit and the great need to be accepted. By the next morning, her stomach was even in pain because of stress.
