Zootopia 2
With the long-awaited Zootopia 2 set to hit the screen, Chinese fans are anxious to meet again with Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde on the silver screen. Picking up directly after the first film, which came out in 2016, the new movie follows the two main characters as they are caught in a decades-old mystery about Zootopia’s most famous family, the Lynxleys. Zootopia 2 will come out at the same time on the Chinese mainland and in North America on November 26.
Nobody
A poster of the animated film Nobody, directed by Yu Shui, recently had its first showing in Rome. Taken from the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West, the film re-imagines the famous long journey through the eyes of four fun and lively little monsters. Its producer Simon Blakeney tells China Daily that international support and attention were important to its success. “Changes in streaming have brought a lot of challenges for how shows like this are made, so having the support of partners like BiliBili makes a huge difference, as we can focus on the animals,” he says.
Our National Park
The third season of the documentary series Our National Park was shown on Dragon TV on October 14, showing the natural wonders in three of China’s first group of national parks—the Giant Panda National Park, the Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park, and the Northeast China Tiger and Leopard National Park. I was visiting my parents in 2003 when my mom came out of their room with a puzzled look on her face. She’d been listening to the radio and heard an interview with a best-selling author of young adult fantasy novels (奇幻小说). The woman’s name was Tamora Pierce, the same as a young student my mom had taught nearly four decades before.
The Internet should be able to tell us. I found the author’s website quickly. She was a popular writer of books. I clicked on the biography link to scan for references to Burlingame Junior High, where my mom had worked, and my heart began to race when I spotted it at the bottom of the first section. Here was confirmation (确认) that my mother had taught a now-famous writer!
But my eyes came to a stop reading the next paragraph, in which Pierce described writing her first fiction as a sixth grader. “The next year, as I was creating my own stories, my English teacher, Mrs. Jacobson, introduced me to the Lord of the Rings trilogy by J. R. R. Tolkien,” the biography (传记) read. “I got hooked on fantasy, and then on science fiction, and both made their way into my stories.” My mother’s name was Mary Jacobson.
Within days, my dad had checked out all the Tamora Pierce books at the local library, and in one we found another surprise: a 1998 novel, which was dedicated (题献词) to “the teacher who shaped my life”. The teacher was Mary Jacobson. The dedication concluded, “A great teacher is above all other treasures.”
This story made me see my mom differently. We knew she was a teacher, but we had no idea what kind of teacher she had been. She was just 24 when she taught Pierce. Until 2011, when she passed away, we did know who she was.
24.Why did the mother wear a puzzled look in Paragraph 1?
A. The interviewee was a best-selling writer.
B. The author visited the parents unexpectedly.
C. The interviewee may be her former student.
D. The young adult fantasy novels sold so well.
25.What information did the author find about Pierce?
A. She suffered a lot to become a writer.
B. She preferred fantasy to science fiction.
C. She took pride in the author’s mother.
D. She was grateful to the author’s mother.
26.Which of the following can best describe Jacobson?
A. Devoted and thankful. B. Inspiring and respectable.
C. Caring and demanding. D. Considerate and intelligent.
27.What’s the suitable title of the passage?
A. Pierce: From a Student Writer to a Fantasy Queen
B. My Mother: A Creator of Well-known Writers
C. A Woman Writer with Gratitude for Her Teacher
D. An Ordinary Teacher Shaping a Famous Writer
C
We’ve all experienced it: You have important information you need to remember, and you’ll do anything it takes to keep it at the forefront of your brain. In this situation, rote memorization (死记硬背) may be your best—or even your only —choice.
Rote memorization is when we repeat a piece of information until we remember it. One great example of it is the alphabet (字母表). When we are little, we don’t necessarily understand that our language is made up of the letters A to Z. But we memorize them in a specific order because we are taught to, and then we know the alphabet.
There are situations in which rote memorization can be helpful. “Rote memorization can be a useful learning tool in some situations, but its effectiveness depends on the type of information being learned and how it is applied,” says Dr. Aldrich Chan, neuropsychologist. He tells us that rote memorization helps us quickly recall basic facts and information such as vocabulary words or math formulas (公式). This can be particularly helpful in situations where immediate access to information is required, like during exams.
The act of memorizing through repetition also has its downsides. Chan notes that “rote memorization often does not promote a deep understanding of the material. Learners may be able to memorize facts or information without truly understanding their meaning or significance.” On the other hand, he explains that “meaningful learning focuses on understanding the basic concepts and principles, encouraging critical thinking, and promoting the integration (整合) of knowledge into broader contexts. Meaningful learning promotes long-term memory and the ability to apply knowledge flexibly.”
However, both rote memorization and meaningful learning have their place. The most important to keep in mind is that they are different, and rote memorization cannot stand in as an alternative to actual learning. Memorizing something doesn’t mean you understand it, and it doesn’t mean you can do anything with it.
28.How does the author introduce the topic in paragraph 1?
A. By giving an example. B. By providing a definition.
C. By creating a scene. D. By making a comparison.
29.Why does the author mention the alphabet in paragraph 2?
A. To show how rote memorization works.
B. To stress why learning in order is important.
C. To instruct us how to learn the alphabet.
D. To introduce the disadvantages of repetition.
30.What can we learn about rote memorization from Dr. Aldrich Chan?
A. It focuses on the concepts and principles.
B. It helps promote a meaningful understanding.
C. It serves as useful tool for test preparation.
D. It keeps knowledge in people’s brain for long.
31.What is the author’s attitude towards rote memorization?
A. Negative. B. Objective. C. Uninterested. D. Supportive.
D
For centuries, people have wondered why birds sing at dawn(黎明). Now, a new study on zebra finches(斑马雀) suggests that although darkness stops birds from singing, birds build up a stronger inner drive to sing in the lengthier night that causes them to burst into song at dawn.
Satoshi Kojima at the Korea Brain Research Institute in Daegu, South Korea, and his colleagues studied laboratory-raised zebra finches in carefully controlled lighting conditions to change the timing of light and dark cycles.
The team first pushed back the time at which the finches saw sudden bright light to 3 hours later than the true dawn. The birds were awake but stayed silent in the artificial darkness, and when the lights finally did come on, the birds sang more strongly than usual. When the lights came on 3 hours earlier than true dawn, the birds still started singing, but without the same energy as when they were forced to wait.
In other words, says Kojima, the longer the time lag(时间间隔) between when the birds wake up and the onset of light, the stronger the birdsong.
“The birds are already awake in the dark before the lights come on,” he says. “But their natural singing is suppressed(抑制) by the darkness. This suppression makes them want to sing even more, leading to a high rate of singing immediately after the lights are turned on.”
While this study only looked at one type of bird, the similar thing may apply to others, Kojima says. But Diego Gil at the National Museum of Natural Sciences in Madrid, Spain, warns us to be careful. There are “a great many differences between birds in how, when and what they sing in the morning singing”, he says.
32.What is the main finding of the study on zebra finches?
A. Longer darkness can make birds want to sing more at dawn.
B. Most of the birds prefer to sing more strongly in the afternoon.
C. Zebra finches develop a love for singing aloud in the night.
D. Different kinds of birds have different methods of singing.
33.How is paragraph 3 mainly developed?
A. By listing data results. B. By following time order.
C. By giving examples. D. By making comparisons.
34.What does the underlined word “onset” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. End. B. Beginning. C. Improvement. D. Worsening.
35.What does Diego Gil show in the last paragraph?
A. Zebra finches are never clever singers.
B. The study method is perfectly designed.
C. The finding of the study is narrow.
D. All birds sing similarly at dawn.

Fun Facts About the English Language
The English language is spoken by millions of people worldwide and is famous for its many curiosities. From unusual spelling rules to surprising vocabulary, it offers learners both fun and challenges.
Hundreds of new words are added to dictionaries every year. In 2020 alone, more than 500 were included in Merriam-Webster. 36 This shows that language grows together with them.
Letters also play curious roles. “E” is by far the most common, appearing in about 11% of all words. It occurs in “the,” the most used word, and in verbs like “be.” 37 With so many appearances, it is naturally the most typed letter on keyboards.
Pronunciation brings even greater challenges. The combination “ough,” for example, can be pronounced in ten different ways. In one sentence — “A rough-coated, dough-faced, thoughtful ploughman strode through the streets of Scarborough” — all of them appear. 38 These irregularities remind learners that English spelling has never been fully unified.
Culture adds more surprises. The United States, for instance, has never declared English its official national language, even though it dominates (主导) daily life. 39 This shows that a language’s influence depends more on practice than on law.
English continues to evolve. Dictionaries expand every year, old words gain new meanings, and learners everywhere adapt to its changes. 40
A. That is why “E” is called the king of letters.
B. The letter “E” is mainly used in specific writing.
C. Such a fact may surprise many language learners.
D. This mix of rules and exceptions puzzles learners.
E. New words often reflect culture, science, and technology.
F. These examples show how English language affects culture.
G. As a result, English stays one of the most active languages in history.

阅读下面短文,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Mary and I had been best friends since we were very young. We did everything together. During this summer vacation, the weather was very hot, so we often stayed in her cool room, learning to play guitar from videos online. Every day we would meet and practice, helping each other with hard parts and laughing when we made silly mistakes.
On her bookshelf stood a small blue vase(花瓶). It was not expensive, but it was very special. Mary’s grandmother had made it before she died. She painted little white dots(圆点) all around it. “Grandma’s hand were always steady,” Mary would say, touching the dots gently. “She said these dots are her love staying with me.”
Last Thursday, we were practicing a new song. The guitar pick suddenly fell from my hand and went behind the bookshelf. When I reached down to get it, my arm hit the shelf. The blue vase unexpectedly fell to the floor. Unfortunately, it broke into pieces. The sound was loud in the quiet room.
Mary stopped playing the guitar. She put her guitar down and knelt next to the broken vase. She picked up one piece with a white dot still on it. “ Grandma painted this,” she said softly, her voice shaking uncontrollably. “She painted every dot.” She murmured repeatedly. I stood there, not knowing what to say. I remained speechless, rooted to the spot at the sight of the broken vase. Finally, I struggled with my guilt. “I am terribly sorry, I didn’t mean to break your treasured vase.” I apologized to her but all my words felt empty. Mary didn’t look up and she kept her head down. She just cried bitterly, holding the broken piece in her hand. I felt so guilty and terrible that I turned and walked out of the room. I left the guitar there and headed home, feeling worse with every step. Tired by the bad mood, I went straight to bed and fell into a restless sleep.

写作:第一节:
In order to raise students’ awareness of healthy lifestyles, our school held a series of activities themed “Scientific Weight Management” last week.
There are various activities including lectures by experts, discussions on healthy eating, and fitness classes to teach students how to keep in shape effectively. Students actively participated, learning practical tips for maintaining a healthy weight. Many participants reported they felt motivated to promote healthy eating habits and encourage physical activity.
Overall, the activities were a great success. Not only did they make students more aware of weight management but also inspired students to fight for lifelong well-being.
第二节:
The next morning, I woke up with a heavy heart. I knew I had to do something. I took all my savings out of my wallet and searched for a similar vase in every shop on the street. The sun was hot as I walked into store after store. Most vases were too big or too fancy. Just when I was about to give up, I saw a small blue vase in a window. It was plain, with no dots, but it was the right size. I bought it and some white paint. Back home, I sat at the kitchen table, carefully painting little dots all around it. My hand wasn’t steady like Mary’s grandmother’s, but I tried my best until the vase was covered with dots. Feeling overjoyed, I wrapped the new vase in paper and headed for Mary’s house as soon as I could.
That afternoon, I held the new vase carefully in my hands, standing outside Mary’s house. My heart was beating wildly as I knocked on the door. When she opened it, I handed her the vase and said in a soft tone, “I painted the dots myself. Please forgive me, please!” Mary took it slowly and looked at the dots. I spotted a smile spreading over her face. Her eyes lit up with joy as she told me, “Thank you for bringing me this new vase. I like it.” She placed it on the shelf, where the old one had been. Picking up her guitar, she handed me mine. “Let’s practice the song we are learning.” As we played together, I came to realize that friendship wasn’t about never breaking things. Instead, it was about having the courage to try to fix things even when we were afraid we couldn’t. I was proud of myself for making things right.

Text 1
W: Have you decided what you’re wearing to the party?
M: Well, I have bought a pair of trousers, but I haven’t got a T-shirt that matches.
W: We could go shopping tomorrow. I need to get a pair of shoes and a bag.
Text 2
W: Why is Alex applying for financial aid? Doesn’t he earn a lot in this company?
M: His parents died from an accident last year, and he has a little brother. He has to pay for his college fees.
Text 3
W: Have you seen Charlotte?
M: No, but I think she’s probably reading some books.
W: You’re probably right. She told me yesterday she wants to brush up on her Spanish for her trip to Argentina.

W: Yeah, I love those bananas and apples for lunch. How about you?
M: I just have a hamburger today. I wish my mom had remembered to put sandwiches in my bag.
Text 5

W: Yes. Please bring me a towel and a cup of coffee. I’m in Room 203.
M: OK. It’ll be ready in a minute.
Text 6
M: Cathy, you look worried. Why?
W: According to the screen, our flight to Sydney has been delayed by 3 hours, so now we won’t be boarding the plane until 2 p.m. But we have a meeting at night.
M: That shouldn’t be a problem. The meeting with our customers isn’t until 8 o’clock. Unfortunately, we won’t have time to take a tour of the city as we planned. I have been looking forward to it for a long time.
W: What a pity! However, we can look around it next time.
Text 7
W: What are you doing at the moment in class, Tommy?
M: We’re doing some projects on Europe. We have to choose one of the countries that belong to the European Union.
W: What country did you choose?
M: Oh, I’m doing Austria. We’ve got a sheet and there’re these things listed and we’ve got to put them down in a book because we’re making a book. What about you?
W: We’re having the same project as yours. I’m doing France because it appeals to me.
M: Have you found out anything about it yet?
W: Yeah. I’ve found out, like, what animals they’ve got. And I’ve made this forest thing. It’s quite good, actually.

M: You should take their advice. They know what’s best for you.
W: But my friends will have jobs and lots of fun while I spend all my time doing reading and writing.
M: But if you go to university, you’ll still have time for fun.
W: Umm. What you say makes sense. But I still have to ask my parents for pocket money and I hate to do so at this age.
M: If you try to work on weekends, you will have some money.
W: That’s a good idea! Thanks for your advice.
Text 9
M: Veronique, what do you like to do in your spare time?
W: I like listening to music by French singers. Go into any French music store, and you’ll find the top 10 albums by U.S., German and English artists. It’s good to have variety, but I prefer French music.
M: Do French teens like fast food such as chips?
W: Well, we don’t really like that. We usually have quick breakfast, sandwiches at lunch and a family dinner at around 8:00 to 8:30 in the evening. The younger teenagers like to eat hamburgers at McDonald’s.
M: Paris is well known for popular clothes, so I’m sure it offers French teens the most up-to-date clothes to choose from.
W: Exactly. I like to wear clothes by Agnes B., a popular French designer. I think Agnes B. clothes are kind of classic and lovely. One of my favorites is a silver jacket because it came from one of the shows and most importantly there is no other like it.
Text 10
M: Well, it all happened last Thursday. I was in a hurry to get to the gym early to calm down a bit before the game. I was all stressed out about the game when I left home, but I got in the car and started to drive toward the gym. All of a sudden my phone rang—it was my sister Ann. She was all excited about the game and wanted to uplift me. My sister and I kept on talking when I suddenly realized that the cars in front of me were stopped. I hit the brakes, but it was too late and I hit the car. I could hardly get out of the car to talk to the other driver because my leg hurt so much. To tell you the truth, I was so frightened that I didn’t know what to do. Finally a policeman came and made me sign some papers; then an ambulance took me to the hospital. They took some X-rays. Thank goodness my leg wasn’t broken, but I had to stay in hospital for several days. And now I’m stuck with the walking stick.
