Passage 1
Deep down in the sea, Ivan sat on the floor covered with sand. He was bored and unhappy. He watched other pretty fish swimming in and out of rocks. They were laughing and dancing in the sea. “Why am I so different?” he said to himself.
“You are an octopus (章鱼), Ivan. That’s special.” The sweet voice of Peter, a beautiful white dolphin, always made Ivan feel better. Ivan looked up at the white dolphin and smiled. Peter said, “Let’s play games together.” They were having a lot of fun and they didn’t know they swam far from home.
Suddenly, Peter saw a large shark swimming above them. “It is Big White ... the biggest, most terrible shark in the sea,” he shouted to Ivan. Peter looked at Big White hopelessly. Peter was so afraid that he couldn’t swim. Just at this moment, Big White rushed down towards them. An idea came to Ivan. He quickly sprayed (喷) a cloud of black ink over the shark’s eyes. Then Ivan and Peter swam away and got home safely.

Chishan Lake Wetland Park is in Anhui Province. It has become home to many different kinds of birds because of its good environment. Every year, a lot of tourists go there to watch the birds. Do you know how to watch the birds? The following advice will help you.
Birdwatchers enjoy looking for and listening to different kinds of birds. To watch the birds, all you need is a pair of binoculars, a field guide and love for birds.
When you are ready, it’s best to go to the wild with some experienced (有经验的) people. You can join a birdwatching group to learn about some skills.
Start birdwatching in the morning when birds are searching for food. Most of the time, you will hear bird calls from all around you, but you will not see any birds easily. Look for movement in trees, and bring your binoculars to your eyes to see more clearly.
The most important work for a birdwatcher is to identify (识别) the birds. A bird’s shape, size, colour and habits can help a birdwatcher identify it. When you identify a bird, don’t forget to take notes about it on your notebook.

Passage 3
Four types of friends you need in your life
Do you know that people will die early if they have no friends during their lifetime? The survey shows if you want to live longer and more happily, you need to have some friends who can share your sadness and happiness or can be helpful when you are in trouble.
The following four types of friends are just what you need to keep the doctors away.
A Loyal Best Friend
Everyone needs a friend who will support you in different situations. This kind of friend knows all of your deepest and darkest secrets, but still loves you all the same.
A Friendly Neighbor
These days, a lot of people don’t know their own neighbors. It’s a shame, because some neighbors can be the most helpful people. If you forget to lock the front door when you are on holiday, you can call your neighbors to lock it for you. So it’s wonderful to have nice and helpful neighbors.
A Workmate
You’ll find it much easier to chat with someone than eating lunch alone every day.
Your workmate doesn’t have to be your best friend. If you two get along well with each other, you can always start going out and having lunch with them outside of the office.
A Friend from a Different Culture
If everyone had a friend from a different culture, the world would be a much better place. Remember not to make friends with someone just because they’re from a different culture. Instead, keep your mind open, and if you meet someone from other places, try to learn about their customs and traditions.
If you have such kinds of friends, you will surely live longer and more happily.

Passage 5
任务型阅读
Ryrkaypiy, a village with about 700 people, is located in the northeast of Russia. Standing on the coast of the Arctic Ocean, it has to brave both the Arctic’s cold weather and wild animals like polar bears. Most of the area’s polar bears live a few miles away from Ryrkaypiy. Only a few bears come near to the village now and then.
But last winter, over 50 polar bears went to Ryrkaypiy in search of food. The villagers were told to stay indoors to avoid danger. Now, polar bears come to the village more often and in larger numbers than ever.
Although polar bears are born on land, they spend most of their life on the sea ice. The ice gives them a place where they can have a rest and catch fish. But as the temperature rises because of global warming, the bears have started to find their home disappearing.
Polar bears normally go onto dry land in summer and return to the ice when the ocean freezes again in autumn. But over the past few years, the ocean has frozen later and later, and the ice area has become smaller and smaller. Unable to live on the ice, hungry polar bears have to look for food on land, including villages like Ryrkaypiy.
In some countries, polar bears are considered as endangered animals. If the earth becomes so warm that there is no longer enough ice for the bears to live on, there will probably be no polar bears.
Immediate action must be taken to help polar bears.

On weekends, my classmates and I took trips to different places around the province. On one trip, we went whale watching on the St Lawrence River. Even though it was raining, we could see huge whales swimming around our boat. The most wonderful part of our trip was a visit to Old Quebec. I walked along the stone street, took pictures of the European-style (欧式的) buildings, and learned some stories there.

Cut the paper to make it the same size as the square. Finally, stick the paper to the string square with glue. Now your kite is finished. All you need to do is to tie a long string to the kite so you can fly it. In many countries, there are kite competitions. Hundreds of people come together to show off their kites. Passage 17
Have you ever seen a koala somewhere? Koalas, which are often called koala “bears”, are tree-climbing animals and are seen as national symbols of Australia. However, recently the Australian government has announced (宣布) that koalas are endangered animals across much of the country.
As a matter of fact, the country lost 30% of its koala population between 2018 and 2021, especially in New South Wales, according to a report from the Australian Koala Foundation. If nothing was done, New South Wales’ koalas would die out by 2050, research in June 2020 said. “This must be a wake-up call to Australia and the government to move much faster to protect the cute animals,” Josey Sharrad, a manager with the International Fund for Animal Welfare, said seriously.
Koalas are dying out all over the country because of the climate change and the fast development of cities. People have seen some places that look like the moon — with dead and dying trees everywhere.
After WWF-Australia and the International Fund for Animal Welfare called on the government to announce koalas as endangered in April, the government promised they would get more public support and protect koalas’ home — they live in the forests and woodlands.
The Australian government is now doing its best to collect money to protect koalas. On the one hand, it has spent $13 million in helping improve their living places. On the other hand, the government plans to spend another $36 million doing better health research and medical support to further help koala programs over the next four years.
“We should never have allowed things to get to the point where we are at risk of losing a national symbol,” Environment Minister Susan Ley said.

3. Why are koalas dying out all over the country?

Passage 18
阅读短文并根据短文内容回答问题。(每题答案不超过11个词)
Scientists have long known that Chimpanzees (黑猩猩) sometimes use leaves or insects as medicine. Do you know they can also give “first aid (急救)” to each other? Scientists studying in Uganda found this.
Chimpanzees are closely related to (相关的) humans, so scientists study them a lot. For example, when they are sick or hurt, they find ways to care for themselves.
In 2021, Dr Elodie Freymann went to Uganda to study chimpanzees in the Budongo Forest. She wanted to learn how they deal with their injuries (伤口). Her team looked through 30 years of research (研究) records and spent eight months studying two groups of chimpanzees.
They found 34 examples of chimpanzees taking care of their own injuries, often by licking (舔) themselves or using leaves. Sometimes, they chewed (咀嚼) plants and put them on injuries. Licking can clean cuts and stop infection (感染). Some plant leaves can do this, too.
Even more interesting were the seven examples of chimpanzees helping others. In one example, a young chimp sucked (吸吮) on another one’s leg to help clean the injury.
A big question is whether these actions are natural or taught. In one example, a young chimp watched her mother chew a leaf and put it on a cut. Freymann thinks some actions are natural, but others are taught. She plans to keep studying to find out more.
1. What did scientists in Uganda find about chimpanzees?
2. Why do scientists study a lot about chimpanzees?

Passage 19
Can you imagine going to school on a boat? That is just what students at a Bangladeshi boat school do! Every morning, a boat travels along the river and picks them up. When all the students are on board, the boat stops at the side of the river and the class begins.
Bangladeshi boat schools aren’t just an interesting idea—they are necessary for many local children. The rainy season in Bangladesh causes heavy flooding every year. Because of high water levels, many children can’t get to school. For years, these children simply missed school during the rainy season. The boat school changed all that. It became a way for children to keep going to school during the yearly floods.
A teacher at the boat school said, “Teaching on the boat is a wonderful experience. Children don’t miss classes and fall behind. That makes it easier for them to learn.” The students are excited too. “I love my boat school,” said Dev, a 10-year-old boy. “My teachers and classmates are friendly. And the boat itself is great! It has a computer and a small library—there’s even a playground on the upper level!” His classmate Mila agreed. “I love being on the boat. It fills me with a sense of adventure!” she said.

Passage 20

“Are you OK?” asked Ivan. “Yes. I am lucky to have you as my friend!” replied Peter. Ivan’s face turned red. “I guess being different from others can be so cool sometimes,” Ivan said. “That is what I try to tell you,” Peter said.

Most children have wonderful toys to play with. Usually, their parents buy these toys for them, often as Christmas or birthday gifts. Some children buy small toys with their pocket money But instead of buying toys, one fun way to get new toys is to make them.
The easiest toy to make is a kite. For a kite, all you need is a large piece of paper, two sticks, some pieces of string and some glue. She is always willing to help others. Sometimes we have different ideas, but we still treat each other as best friends. I think my life will be less colourful without her.
We met each other three years ago. She was all in black and said hello to me with a sweet smile. I guessed she was a gentle and lovely girl. And she really was. When I was in trouble, she always stood by me and cared about me.
This summer holiday, we took a trip to the amusement park Happy Valley together. We had a great time on the roller coaster (过山车). We held each other’s hands and shouted excitedly when the roller coaster came down quickly. It was so interesting. Those rides made me feel a little sick, so she bought a bottle of water for me. This experience left me with a lot of good memories and made our friendship stronger.

1. What has the Australian government announced recently?
2. When would New South Wales’ koalas die out if nothing was done?
3. Why are koalas dying out all over the country?
4. Where do koalas live in Australia?
5. What may happen to koalas over the next four years? Why do you think so?

3. How did Freymann’s team do their research?
4. What do chimpanzees often do to take care of their injuries?
5. What might the example in the last paragraph show?

This kind of exciting and creative school is helping Bangladeshi children learn—even in the most difficult weather.
