Pooja Kaul, a postgraduate student at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) in Mumbai, India, one day came to the Lashkar community, where people relied on donkeys (驴) for work on building sites. “Despite working all day, they received just Rs 300-400, hardly enough to feed their large families,” Pooja said. “While donkey milk has been a local resource, it is not as popular as cow milk. As a result, they didn’t make more money.”
Pooja wanted to help the community find economic value in donkey milk. So Pooja turned to a different use — skincare. She made her first set of 250 soaps (肥皂) and returned to her hometown, Delhi. She showed her products at city exhibitions and received excellent reviews. Today, her company Organiko offers products like handmade soaps and face masks, with plans to add sunscreens. The products serve a wide market, completing more than 500 orders monthly with customers in many cities.
Shahid, a 27-year-old building worker, manages a group of at least 20 donkeys. Since partnering with Organiko, Shahid has been getting about Rs 1,300 per unit of donkey milk. “Earlier, the milk had no value, and the donkeys were often given little attention. Now, we can offer them better living conditions,” Shahid says. “We milk the donkeys every other day, ensuring their babies get enough feeding first. We never overmilk or stress the animals; our focus is on care.”
Meanwhile, Pooja tried hard to do more. “I applied under the National Livestock Mission in 2023, which offered government funding (资金) to animal-related new businesses. But after an 11-month-long process, there was no progress,” she said. “However, our work raised awareness about this field. In 2024, donkey farming was formally included under the National Livestock Mission. Similar businesses can now get funding aid. Although the journey was tough, it led to a positive change in action.”
The challenges ahead won’t stop Pooja. Today, her work is helping rewrite the story around donkeys. Once seen as working animals, they have now become a symbol of economic opportunity.
41. What did Pooja say about the Lashkar community people?
A. They were quite skilled workers. B. They struggled to make a living.
C. They owned valuable farm animals. D. They cared little about donkey milk.
42. What can we learn about Pooja’s business?
A. It has achieved rapid growth. B. It faces continuous challenges.
C. It depends heavily on online sales. D. It focuses on a unique customer group.
43. What extra benefit did Shahid’s partnership with Organiko provide?
A. Increasing donkey milk production. B. Improving the donkeys’ well-being.
C. Advancing animal training practice. D. Developing local building businesses.
44. Pooja’s efforts in 2023 brought________.
A. huge pay rises for Indian farmers B. strict guidelines on animal farming
C. official support for donkey farming D. growing popularity of raising donkeys
45. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Turn community resources into wealth
B. Study donkey farming in poor communities
C. Offer working animals better living conditions
D. Change the skincare industry with natural products

If you spend time on social media, you’re likely to have seen the hit video: a cat is quietly eating its food unaware that a dark green cucumber has been placed behind it. The moment the cat finishes and turns around, the peaceful sight turns into disorder. The cat jumps into the air in shock rushing away.
Are cats naturally afraid of cucumbers? Experts say the story is not that simple. According to cat behaviorist Katenna Jones, they generally couldn’t care less about cucumbers or other similarly shaped objects. In her long experience of living with and working with cats, most of them take little notice of cucumbers, carrots, or even candy bars (条状物).
We don’t know much about cat behavior. As The New York Times recently reported, cats are highly understudied. “What we do know, however, is that cats are a prey (猎物) species, and, in the wild, they’re always on the lookout for enemies, especially when eating with their backs to a wide open space,” Jones said. “When a cat believes that it is safe, it can eat calmly,” Jones explained. “But if something large and unfamiliar unexpectedly appears behind it, the surprise can set off a fear response (反应) — just as a person might shout loudly at a big spider in the shower.”
Cat behaviorist Jane Ehrlich also notes that the video may hide other things: a sudden noise, a movement off camera, or even the person filming. If the fearful moment is a one-off thing, the cat will likely be fine. However, repeated stress can lead to worsening health, attacks, or falling trust in the owner. Both experts agree that fear isn’t funny for the one that’s receiving it.
Instead, owners should join their cats in positive play. Jones encourages owners to allow their cats to explore toys that match their hunting style — ground-based prey or flying objects — and to let them choose when to play. “Discover what they enjoy,” Ehrlich advises. “Laugh with your cat, not at it.”
46. The author introduces the main topic by________.
A. sharing a personal experience B. raising a challenging question
C. describing a popular video sight D. presenting a scientific experiment
47. What is Jones’ view on cats’ possible fear of cucumbers?
A. She doubts the direct connection. B. She accepts it in certain situations.
C. She suggests a shortage of training. D. She considers it a recent discovery.
48. Why does the video cat behave so shockingly according to Jones?
A. It is unprepared for sudden danger. B. It mistakes the cucumber for food.
C. It tries to protect its feeding space. D. It aims to get its owner’s attention.
49. What might repeated “cucumber scares” bring to cats?
A. Stronger hunting abilities. B. A drop in overall well-being
C. Less attention to unfamiliar objects. D. An increasing interest in creative play.
50. What do the experts suggest owners do with their cats during play?
A. Train them to face fears B. Provide challenges step by step.
C. Introduce new objects regularly D. Follow their natural preferences.
D
Chaos gardening (混沌园艺) took center stage on social media in 2023, and it appears to be here to stay. It invites gardeners to spread a mix of seeds, often without a formal design, and let nature take the lead. Thanks to social media, chaos gardening has become a way of recording the planting process and accepting whatever grows. Sometimes, it grows into a colorful, wild garden full of flowers; other times, it’s a fun mix of plants and unexpected vegetables.
Many gardeners already welcome a bit of chaos. As environmental worries grow, many people look to their gardens as a source of hope. Chaos gardening can help attract pollinators (传粉者), and provide people with a simple and meaningful way to connect with nature. As more homeowners seek pollinator-friendly yards, chaos gardening fits into the movement. Its natural way cuts the need for chemicals, reducing water pollution. By creating a range of living spaces, it also helps fight climate change.
The success of chaos gardening and its environmental influence depend heavily on what seeds you use. A different mix of plants can attract pollinators like bees and butterflies, but native plants continually provide the most benefit. In comparison, some seed mixes include fast-spreading foreign species that can do more harm than good. Mixing plants with different kinds of roots (根) can make soil healthier, support tiny living things in the soil, and reuse plant leaves.
People may think that chaos gardening never fails. However, results can be highly unpredictable. Some gardens grow beautifully and attract pollinators, while others end up with just a few plants or messy growth. Each garden becomes a unique ecological experiment with mixed levels of the variety of species. This makes every garden truly one of a kind.
Chaos gardening offers a fun, affordable way to add life, color, and ecological value to your outdoor space, especially if you enjoy experimenting. For beginners, it’s a great way to start gardening without strict rules or the pressure of doing everything perfectly. With a little purpose behind the wildness, you might just find a joyful and green way of gardening.
51. Which can best describe the feature of chaos gardening?
A. A free-spirited planting style. B. A high-effort gardening method.
C. A team-managed growing system. D. A production-focused farming practice.
52. Why do many gardeners welcome chaos gardening?
A. It reduces costs B. It is eco-friendly.
C. It benefits fitness. D. It needs less space.
53. What is key to achieving a successful chaos garden?
A. Planting a variety of local seeds. B. Avoiding those fast-growing species.
C. Providing enough sunlight and water. D. Growing with proper timing and spacing.
54. What does the underlined word “unpredictable” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A Satisfying. B. Balanced. C. Uncertain. D. Unnecessary.
55. The purpose of the last paragraph is to________.
A. stress the need for gardening skills B. raise awareness about species protection
C. explain the advantages of outdoor planting D. encourage the practice of natural gardening
I lived in Orlando and worked downtown. Every day I met different people who asked for money on the street but this girl, whom I had seen several times, never did. Whenever she saw me pass by, she only said with a sweet smile, “Good morning, sir. I wish you a wonderful day!”
Impressed by her smile, later one time, I couldn’t help asking her name and decided to invite her to dinner every Tuesday. We met at the corner of Pine Street and ate together for about half an hour. Her name is Amy Joe. From her positive attitude towards life, I hardly connected her with a homeless girl.
Last week Amy Joe told me something that shocked me a lot. She said she once was trying to find a job, but she didn’t know how to read or write. For this reason, she spent almost all the money she had buying books that could help her clear the hurdle, instead of buying more food.
People are always like this. You never know how fortunate you are until you come across a less lucky one. I had always been ignoring the fact that I had two fantastic parents and a family that tried to give me the best. Amy Joe was not that lucky, though. I made a new decision. Not only did we have dinner together on Tuesdays, but I started to help her learn to read. Every week I borrowed a book from the library. We read it together and then she reviewed it for the rest of the week.
One day after five years, Amy Joe told me she wanted to invite me to dinner as she found a job in a supermarket. She hugged me excitedly. I felt delighted at her efforts. I didn’t refuse her dinner. She had become an independent girl. She could support herself and no longer ask anyone for anything. I think this is probably the greatest thing I have ever done in my life.

She made her first set of 250 soaps (肥皂) and returned to her hometown Delhi.

46. C 47. A 48. A 49. B 50. D

根据第一段“If you spend time on social media, you’re likely to have seen the hit video: a cat is quietly eating its food unaware that a dark green cucumber has been placed behind it. The moment the cat finishes and turns around, the peaceful sight turns into disorder. The cat jumps into the air in shock rushing away. (如果你经常刷社交媒体,大概率见过那个爆火的视频:一只猫咪正安静地吃着饭,丝毫没注意身后被放了一根深绿色的黄瓜。当猫咪吃完转身的那一刻,原本平和的画面瞬间变得混乱,它吓得一跃而起,仓皇逃走。)”可知,作者是通过描述一个热门视频的场景来引出文章的主题。故选C。
【47题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段“Are cats naturally afraid of cucumbers? Experts say the story is not that simple. According to cat behaviorist Katenna Jones, they generally couldn’t care less about cucumbers or other similarly shaped objects. (猫咪天生就怕黄瓜吗?专家表示事情并非如此简单。猫咪行为学家卡特娜·琼斯称,猫咪通常对黄瓜或者其他形状类似的物体根本毫不在意。)” 可知,琼斯并不认为猫咪的恐惧和黄瓜有直接的关联。故选A。

But if something large and unfamiliar unexpectedly appears behind it, the surprise can set off a fear response 故选A。
根据第四段“If the fearful moment is a one-off thing, the cat will likely be fine. However, repeated stress can lead to worsening health, attacks, or falling trust in the owner. (如果只是一次性的惊吓,猫咪很可能不会有什么大碍。但反复的压力会导致它的健康状况恶化、出现攻击行为,或是降低对主人的信任度。)”可知,反复用黄瓜吓唬猫咪会导致它的整体健康水平下降。故选B。
【50题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“Instead, owners should join their cats in positive play. Jones encourages owners to allow their cats to explore toys that match their hunting style — ground-based prey or flying objects — and to let them choose when to play. ‘Discover what they enjoy,’ Ehrlich advises. ‘Laugh with your cat, not at it.’ (相反,主人应该和猫咪进行积极的互动玩耍。琼斯建议主人让猫咪去探索那些符合它们捕猎习性的玩具——比如地面猎物类或者飞行类的玩具,并且让猫咪自己决定玩耍的时间。埃利希建议道:“去发现它们喜欢的事物,和猫咪一起欢笑,而不是嘲笑它。”)”可知,专家建议主人在和猫咪玩耍时,要遵从猫咪的天性和喜好。故选D。

52. Why do many gardeners welcome chaos gardening?
A. It reduces costs B. It is eco-friendly.

A. Satisfying. B. Balanced. C. Uncertain. D. Unnecessary.

根据第三段中的“The success of chaos gardening and its environmental influence depend heavily on what seeds you use. A different mix of plants can attract pollinators like bees and butterflies, but native plants continually provide the most benefit. (混沌园艺能否成功以及它能产生多大的环境效益,很大程度上取决于你使用的种子类型。多样的植物组合能吸引蜜蜂、蝴蝶等传粉者,但本土植物始终能带来最大的益处。)”可知,打造成功的混沌花园的关键是种植多种本土种子。故选A项。
根据第四段中的“Some gardens grow beautifully and attract pollinators, while others end up with just a few plants or messy growth. Each garden becomes a unique ecological experiment with mixed levels of the variety of species. (有些花园长势喜人,吸引了众多传粉者,而有些花园最终却只长出寥寥几株植物,或是长势杂乱无章。每个花园都成了一场独特的生态实验,物种丰富度参差不齐。)”可知,混沌园艺的种植结果是不确定的,因此“unpredictable”的意思是不确定的,与“uncertain”含义一致。故选C项。
【55题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“Chaos gardening offers a fun, affordable way to add life, color, and ecological value to your outdoor space, especially if you enjoy experimenting. For beginners, it’s a great way to start gardening without strict rules or the pressure of doing everything perfectly. With a little purpose behind the wildness, you might just find a joyful and green way of gardening.
56. What was the difference between Amy and other homeless people on the street? (no more than 10 words)

57. Why was the author greatly surprised by Amy? (no more than 10 words)

56. Amy greeted the author positively instead of asking for money.

Whenever she saw me pass by, she only said with a sweet smile, “Good morning, sir. I wish you a wonderful day!”(每天我都会遇到一些在街上向我要钱的人,但这个我见过好几次的女孩却从不这样做。 Amy greeted the author positively instead of asking for money.
根据第三段“For this reason, she spent almost all the money she had buying books that could help her clear the hurdle, instead of buying more food.(因此,她几乎花光了自己所有的钱来购买那些能帮助她克服这一障碍的书籍,而不是去购买更多的食物)”可知,惊讶是因为他发现这个女孩更看重书籍而非食物。 He found the girl valued books more than food.
根据第三段“She said she once was trying to find a job, but she didn’t know how to read or write.(她说她曾经在找工作,但那时她既不会读也不会写)”可知,艾米既不会读也不会写,可知买书是为了帮助自己进行阅读和写作。 Amy bought books to help with her reading and writing.
根据最后一段“One day after five years, Amy Joe told me she wanted to invite me to dinner as she found a job in a supermarket. She hugged me excitedly. I felt delighted at her efforts. I didn’t refuse her dinner. She had become an independent girl. She could support herself and no longer ask anyone for anything. I think this is probably the greatest thing I have ever done in my life.(五年后的一天,艾米·乔告诉我她想请我吃晚餐,因为她找到了一份在超市的工作。她兴奋地拥抱了我。我为她的努力感到高兴。我没有拒绝她的邀请。她已经成长为一个独立的女孩。她能够自食其力,不再向任何人寻求帮助。我认为这是我一生中做过的最棒的事情)”可知,艾米找到了一份工作,能够自食其力。故答案为She got a job and could support herself.
The author respected Amy and supported her dream, which turned her into an independent girl.
