My wife and I were celebrating our 40th wedding anniversary (纪念日) that year. To our delight, it was a splendid event, lovingly hosted by our sons just for us. Our dear, old friends gave us a wonderful surprise with their thoughtful gifts and heartfelt congratulations. Our gift to each other was a driving trip out west. We drove from Ontario into Alberta, then southward into Glacier National Park in Montana, and continued to Yellowstone National Park. It was a cold spring day, and the Beartooth Highway had opened for the season just days before. Alongside the road, there was still a great amount of snow there. The scenery was so impressive that we made lots of stops to record memories with my camera. At the highest point of the highway, I stopped at a lookout to catch the amazing views, with my wife in the centre of my camera lens. There were not many cars on the road. Sometimes, cars with energetic young tourists passed by. And then we heard a motorcycle in the distance. The driver of the motorcycle, who wore dirty clothes, parked behind our cars. Approaching us, he spoke only a simple command, “Give me your camera and get over there with your wife.” I must admit I felt nervous that we might be robbed where we just created some beautiful memories. Surprisingly, he just took a picture of us, handed back my camera and rode off before we could offer our thanks. Unexpectedly, the photo he took is now one of the most valuable and prized of our trip. In that unexpected encounter, I absorbed a lesson in the most unlikely of places. We should never judge a man by his appearance. To the motorcyclist who may one day read this story and remember us: we wish to extend our deepest appreciation and a heartfelt “Thank you” for the kindness you showed us that day. 41. Over the last year, he has also built up work on what will happen if he gets there. Mr. Musk, has directed SpaceX employees to drill into the design and details of a Martian city, according to five people with knowledge of the efforts and documents viewed by The New York Times. One team is drawing up plans for small dome habitats, including the materials that could be used to build them. Another is working on spacesuits to deal with Mars’s terrible environment, while a medical team is researching whether humans can have children there. These initiatives, which are at their early stage, are a shift toward more concrete planning for life on Mars as Mr. Musk’s timeline has hastened (加速). While he said in 2016 that it would take 40 to 100 years to have a self-sustaining civilization on the planet, Mr. Musk told SpaceX employees in April that he now expects one million people to be living there in about 20 years. Mr. Musk has long tried to defy (违抗) the impossible and has often managed to beat tough odds. But his vision for life on Mars takes his seemingly limitless ambitions to their most extreme — and some might say absurdist — point. No one has ever set foot on the planet. NASA doesn’t expect to land humans on Mars until the 2040s. And if people get there, they will be greeted by icy temperatures, dust storms, and air that is impossible to breathe. Yet Mr. Musk sticks to the idea of creating a civilization on Mars—he once said he plans to die there — that it has pushed nearly every business effort he has made on Earth. His vision for Mars underlies most of the six companies that he leads or owns, each of which could potentially contribute to a space colony, according to the documents and the people with knowledge of the efforts. The Boring Company, a private tunneling venture founded by Mr. Musk, was started in part to ready equipment to dig under Mars’s surface, two of the people said. Mr. Musk has told people that he bought X, the social media platform, partly to help test how a citizen-led government that rules by consensus (共识) might work on Mars. He has also said that he imagines residents on the planet driving a version of the steel-paneled Cybertrucks made by Tesla, his electric vehicle company. 46. What measures are being taken by SpaceX to realize their dream of Mars? A. Designing large spaceships and building hospitals. B. Planning for habitats and designing spacesuits. C. Developing technologies and training medical teams. D. Building space stations and inspiring employees to strive. 47. What is Elon Musk’s current timeline for establishing a self-sustaining civilization on Mars? A. 40 to 100 years from 2016. B. Within the next 20 years. C. By the 2050s. D. He has not specified a timeline. 48. How do some people find Mr. Musk’s vision for Mars? A. Practical and achievable. B. Unreasonable and time-consuming. C. Theoretical and promising. D. Over-ambitious and ridiculous. 49. Why did Mr. Musk purchase X social media platform? A. Because he intended to create a company on Mars. B. Because he was interested in promoting social network on Mars. C. Because he wanted to make profits by running it on Mars. D. Because he dreamt of a resident-managed government for Mars. 50. What is the passage mainly about? A. Elon Musk’s determination and initiatives to put people on Mars. B. Elon Musk’s efforts to overcome the challenges of exploring Mars. C. Elon Musk’s overall vision for the future development of Mars. D. Elon Musk’s companies on Mars and their contributions. 46. B 47. A 48. D 49. D 50. 根据文章第二段中的“One team is drawing up plans for small dome habitats, including the materials that could be used to build them. Another is working on spacesuits to deal with Mars’s terrible environment, while a medical team is researching whether humans can have children there.(一个团队正在为小型圆顶栖息地制定计划,包括可以用来建造它们的材料。另一个正在研究宇航服,以应对火星的恶劣环境,而一个医疗小组正在研究人类能否在火星上生孩子。)”可知,SpaceX公司正在采取的措施是规划栖息地和设计宇航服。故选B。 【47题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段“While he said in 2016 that it would take 40 to 100 years to have a self-sustaining civilization on the planet, Mr. Musk told SpaceX employees in April that he now expects one million people to be living there in about 20 years.(尽管他在2016年表示,在火星上建立一个自给自足的文明需要40到100年的时间,但Mr. Musk在今年4月告诉SpaceX的员工,他现在预计,大约20年后,火星上将有100万人居住。)”可知,Elon Musk目前关于在火星上建立自给自足文明的时间表是从2016年起算,40到100年内。故选A。 Musk has long tried to defy (违抗) the impossible and has often managed to beat tough odds. But his vision for life on Mars takes his seemingly limitless ambitions to their most extreme—and some might say absurdist—point. No one has ever set foot on the planet.(Mr. Musk长期以来一直试图挑战不可能的事情,并经常成功地克服困难。但他对火星生活的愿景将他看似无限的野心推向了极端——有些人可能会说这是荒谬的。从来没有人踏足过这个星球。)”可知,一些人认为Musk的火星愿景是好高骛远和荒谬的。故选D。 【49题详解】 细节理解题。根据文章最后一段中的“Mr. Musk has told people that he bought X, the social media platform, partly to help test how a citizen-led government that rules by consensus (共识) might work on Mars.(Mr. Musk告诉人们,他收购了社交媒体平台X,部分原因是为了帮助测试一个由公民领导、以共识治国的政府如何在火星上运作。)” 通读全文,尤其是第一段的“For more than two decades, Elon Musk has focused SpaceX, his rocket company, on his lifelong goal of reaching Mars.(20多年来,Elon Musk一直把他的火箭公司SpaceX专注于他的终身目标——登陆火星。)” Musk, has directed SpaceX employees to drill into the design and details of a Martian city, according to five people with knowledge of the efforts and documents viewed by The New York Times.(据了解《纽约时报》看到的相关工作和文件的五名知情人士透露,Mr. Musk指示SpaceX员工深入研究火星城市的设计和细节。)”可知,文章主要介绍了Elon Musk致力于将人类送上火星的决心和举措,因此文章的主旨是A选项“Elon Musk’s determination and initiatives to put people on Mars.(Elon Musk将人类送上火星的决心和计划。)”。故选A。 D Art is everywhere. Any public space has been carefully designed by an artistic mind to be both functional and beautiful. Why, then, is art still so widely considered to be "the easy subject" at school, insignificant to wider society, a waste of time and effort? Art can connect culture with commercial products in a way that not many other things can; art generates money and holds significant emotional and cultural value within communities. When people attend a concert, they are paying for music, sure, maybe even hotel rooms, meals, and transport, but they also gain an incredible experience, a unique atmosphere and a memory that will go through the rest of their lives. People don't just want material things anymore, they want to experience life一the arts are a perfect crossover(交迭)between culture and commerce. Furthermore, the arts can bring communities together, reducing loneliness and making people feel safer. Social bonds are created among individuals when they share their arts experiences through reflection and discussion, and their expression of common values through artworks in honour of events significant to a nation's experience. The arts clearly have a pretty positive impact on physical and psychological health. It is found that people who frequent cultural places or participate in artistic events are more likely to gain good health compared to those who do not; more engagement with the arts is linked to a higher level of people's wellbeing. The Royal Society of Public Health discovered that music and art, when used in hospitals, help to improve the conditions of patients by reducing stress, anxiety and blood pressure. Children who are involved with the arts make greater achievements in their education: those engaged with drama have greater literary ability while others taking part in musical practice exhibit greater skills in math and languages. Kids with preference for the arts have a greater chance of finding employment in the future. Participating in the arts is essential for child development; encouraging children to express themselves in constructive ways could help to form healthy emotional responses in later life. Vital to human life, art is celebrated and used by nations across the world for various purposes. Life without art would be boring and dead still, for art is a part of what makes us human. 51. Art products differ from most other commercial products because . A. most people purchase them for collection B. they are more expensive and less accessible C. they have both commercial and cultural values D. their prices may climb up as time passes 52. By sharing their arts experiences, community members can . A. keep the community safe from illnesses B. develop a stronger tie between them C. learn to appreciate their own works of art D. offer honourable solutions to their problems 53. What can we learn about people who are involved in artistic activities? A. They enjoy better living conditions. B. They like to compare themselves with others. C. They are particularly good at both music and art. D. They tend to be healthier physically and mentally. 54. How does kids' engagement with the arts benefit them? A. It promotes their academic performance and emotional growth. B. It gives them more confidence in exhibiting their learning skills. C. It inspires their creativity in designing their future career. D. It helps to make responsible people out of them. 55. What is the best title for this passage? A. How Art Cures Our Hearts B. Art: A Blessing to Humankind C. How Art Benefits Communities D. Art: A Bridge Between Cultures 【答案】51. C 52. B 53. D 54. A 55. 根据第一段“Any public space has been carefully designed by an artistic mind to be both functional and beautiful.”(任何公共空间都是由艺术家精心设计的,既实用又美观。)以及“Art can connect culture with commercial products in a way that not many other things can”(艺术可以将文化与商业产品联系起来,这是其他很多东西都做不到的。) 根据第三段“Social bonds are created among individuals when they share their arts experiences through reflection and discussion,, and their expression of common values through artworks in honor of events significant to a nation's experience.”(当个人通过反思和讨论分享他们的艺术经验,并通过艺术作品表达共同的价值观,以纪念对一个国家的经验有重要意义的事件时,社会纽带就在他们之间建立起来。) 根据第四段“It is found that people who frequent cultural places or participate in artistic events are more likely to gain good health compared to those who do not”(研究发现,经常出入文化场所或参加艺术活动的人比不经常出入文化场所或参加艺术活动的人更容易获得健康;),可见参加艺术活动的人们在身心上都相对更加健康。 根据第五段“Children who are involved with the arts make greater achievements in their education”(参与艺术的孩子在他们的教育中取得更大的成就)以及“encouraging children to express themselves in constructive ways could help to form healthy emotional responses in later life.”(有助于在以后的生活中形成健康的情感反应。) 故选择A。 根据最后一段“Vital to human life, art is celebrated and used by nations across the world for various purposes. Life without art would be boring and dead still, for art is a part of what makes us human.”(艺术对人类的生命至关重要,世界各国为各种目的庆祝和使用艺术。 Roy Austin first experienced an African adventure in 2018. All he wanted to do was get close to some African wildlife. Although Roy did realize this dream, he found something even more meaningful in Africa. Roy spent time in many countries throughout East Africa. He was most interested in the people of rural (农村的) Kenya, especially people of the Amboseli Primary and Secondary School. During his stay, Roy became friends with several students and teachers at the school. He was deeply touched by their positive attitude, even thought it was hard for them to get books and other school supplies. Even finding basic stationery (文具) was a challenge, not to mention the lack of school buildings. In rural Kenya, school buildings are not built by the government. Students, their parents, and teachers find materials and build the schools themselves, or they have to raise money to get builders’ help. Without schools, buildings like libraries and classrooms are just dreams. The students and teachers of the schools very much wanted a library or at least some books to read. After returning home to South Carolina in the United States, the Kenyan students’ yearning for something as seemingly “basic” as books to read still worried Roy. He decided to do whatever he could to help these children. So he started the organization Libraries for Kids International. Since it was started, Roy has shipped over 11,000 books to 11 schools in African countries, including Kenya and Tanzania. To keep costs down, he uses the post office to send the books instead of a carrier like FedEx. The organization has helped to supply these schools with much-needed books, which brought Roy much happiness. He plans to continue shipping books to Africa. 56. What was the main purpose of Roy’s 2018 trip to Africa? (no more than 10 words) _______________________________________________________________________ 57. Who built school buildings in rural Kenya? (no more than 15 words) _______________________________________________________________________ 58. What can the underlined word “yearning” in paragraph 5 be replaced by? (no more than 5 words) _______________________________________________________________________ 59. What does the text mainly tell us? (no more than 15 words) _______________________________________________________________________ 60. What do you think of Roy? And please explain. (no more than 25 words) _______________________________________________________________________ 【答案】56. He wanted to get close to some African wildlife./To see local wildlife. 57. The students, their parents and teachers or the builders’ they hired. 58. Strong needs. 59. Roy Austin brought the pleasure of reading to Africa. 60. Roy is a compassionate and warm-hearted person because he is willing to help those in need. 根据第一段中“Roy Austin first experienced an African adventure in 2018. All he wanted to do was get close to some African wildlife.(罗伊·奥斯汀在2018年第一次经历了非洲冒险。他想做的就是接近一些非洲野生动物)”可知,罗伊·奥斯汀的非洲之行的主要目的是接近非洲野生动物。故答案为He wanted to get close to some African wildlife.或To see local wildlife. 根据第四段中“In rural Kenya, school buildings are not built by the government. Students, their parents and teachers find materials and build the schools themselves, or they have to raise money to get builders’ help.(在肯尼亚农村,学校建筑不是由政府建造的。学生、他们的父母和老师自己寻找材料建造学校,或者他们必须筹集资金获得建筑商的帮助)”可知,学校是由学生、他们的父母和老师自己修建的,或由他们筹集资金请建筑商帮忙修建的。故答案为The students, their parents and teachers or the builders’ they hired。 分析划线词所在句“After returning home to South Carolina in the United States, the Kenyan students’ yearning for something as seemingly “basic” as books to read still worried Roy.(回到美国南卡罗来纳的家后,肯尼亚学生对书本这种看似“基本”的东西的yearning仍然让罗伊感到担忧)”可知,划线词yearning是名词;结合下一段中“Since it was started, Roy has shipped over 11,000 books to 11 schools in African countries, including Kenya and Tanzania.(自成立以来,罗伊已经向包括肯尼亚和坦桑尼亚在内的非洲国家的11所学校运送了1.1万多本书)”可推知,罗伊向肯尼亚学生赠书,说明他们需要书,是他们对书的“强烈的需求”让罗伊决定赠书。 根据第一段中“Although Roy did realize this dream, he found something even more meaningful in Africa.(虽然罗伊实现了这个梦想,但他在非洲找到了更有意义的东西)”、第五段中“He decided to do whatever he could to help these children. So he started the organization Libraries for Kids International.(他决定尽他所能帮助这些孩子。所以他创立了国际儿童图书馆组织)”和第六段中“Since it was started, Roy has shipped over 11,000 books to 11 schools in African countries, including Kenya and Tanzania.(自成立以来,罗伊已经向包括肯尼亚和坦桑尼亚在内的非洲国家的11所学校运送了1.1万多本书)”可知,本文主要讲述了罗伊创立了国际儿童图书馆组织,向非洲国家学校赠送书籍的事情,即把阅读的乐趣带到了非洲。故答案为Roy Austin brought the pleasure of reading to Africa. 通读全文可知,根据第五段“After returning home to South Carolina in the United States, the Kenyan students’  yearning  for something as seemingly “basic” as books to read still worried Roy. He decided to do whatever he could to help these children. So he started the organization Libraries for Kids International.(回到美国南卡罗来纳的家后,肯尼亚学生对书本这种看似“基本”的东西的渴望仍然让罗伊感到担忧。他决定尽他所能帮助这些孩子。所以他创立了国际儿童图书馆组织)”可推知,罗伊是一个富有同情心且热心的人,因为他愿意帮助需要帮助的。故答案为Roy is a compassionate and warm-hearted person because he is willing to help those in need。 Dear Elisa, I’m so glad that you are asking for my advice on how to learn Chinese well through the Internet. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Yours, Li Jin 【答案】Dear Elisa, I’m so glad that you are asking for my advice on how to learn Chinese well through the Internet. B Five years ago, a truly unforgettable event took place. 41. His wife might not be satisfied with the view there. D. The motorcycle driver might not be good at the taking pictures. 44. Which of the following best describes the driver of the motorcycle? A. Rich and generous. B. Kind and straightforward. C. Creative and capable. D. Careful and admirable. 45. Which of the following can be concluded from the passage? A. No pains, no gains. B. Seeing is believing. C. Don’t judge a book by its cover. D. The longest journey begins with the first step. C For more than two decades, Elon Musk has focused SpaceX, his rocket company, on his lifelong goal of reaching Mars. C Because he wanted to make profits by running it on Mars. D Art is everywhere. 51. 56.
