Finland has topped the World Happiness Report for the past eight years. Besides its welfare system, Finland’s high ranking is also due to its people’s close connection with nature and daily sauna (桑拿). Last June, the country’s tourism agency hosted a master class, offering winners chosen from a social media challenge a free trip to Finland to learn from local masters. I didn’t participate in the challenge, but I was inspired by the idea. So I decided to travel to Finland myself to explore what lies behind this sustained happiness.
In my journey to understand Finnish happiness, I sought out some advice from the local masters. A restaurant owner taught me how traditional foods can reconnect us with nature;a vibrant elderly woman demonstrated the power of focus through diving; a ceramic artist encouraged me to do things by hand — like reading, picking berries, or knitting; and almost everyone emphasized the sauna, which I tried myself there.
Back in New York, I attempted to bring these into my own life: I found a backyard sauna in Brooklyn, shopped at farmer’ markets, and tried growing herbs. However, my kitchen received little sunlight, so I carried my small garden up to the roof each morning, sometimes forgetting to bring it back down at night. Summer storms soaked (浸泡) the soil, and eventually, the herbs died and even the pots were thrown away by someone. Then in late July, I went through a rough patch in my relationship. I ate very little or cried at random. Soon, even the sauna no longer lifted my spirits.
I was sitting at the beach one afternoon, wondering why nature was not making me feel better, when the answer hit me: I was trying too hard to live exactly like the Finns. I’d missed the point of what all the masters were saying: Quiet the mind, and find pleasure in small acts and observations. “Simple things,” Ms. Pajunen, one of the masters, had said. “This is at the core of what Finns have to offer the rest of the world.”
4. Why did the author decide to visit Finland?
A. To join a social media challenge trip.
B. To find the secret of lasting happiness.
C. To study the welfare system of Finland.
D. To experience natural scenery and sauna.
5. What did the author learn from the masters in Finland?
A. The history of sauna culture.
B. The professional skills of diving.
C. The value of traditional industries.
D. The practical habits for a joyful life.
6. How did the author’s attempt at Finnish living end up?
A. It failed to achieve its original purpose.
B. It significantly improved her well-being.
C. It succeeded after some initial struggles.
D. It gained support from her neighborhood.
7. What can we learn from the author’s experience?
A. Nature is the source of Finnish romance.
B. Finnish happiness is from various activities.
C. Adopting Finnish lifestyle leads to frustration.
D. Finnish happiness lies in appreciating ordinary things.
【答案】4. B 5. D 6. A 7. D

Young students are often considered “digital natives”, with technology in every aspect of their lives. While this can be an advantage in some situations, research has found that the impact is not completely positive.
To compare the effectiveness of handwritten and typed classroom notes, Pam Mueller from Princeton and Daniel Oppenheimer from UCLA conducted experiments in a simulated (模拟的) classroom environment, where groups of students — sample sizes ranged from 67 to 151 — watched video lectures and took notes either by hand or on laptops, with the Internet switched off and other programs disabled to avoid distraction.
After the lecture, the students first took tests of working memory. Next, they were examined on what they retained from the lectures. The tests consisted of both factual questions and conceptual-application questions, which were designed to assess their understanding of key concepts in the videos. The results showed that while laptop users recorded much more words, the two groups performed equally on factual questions. However, laptop users performed much worse on conceptual-application questions.
To further explore the role of note-taking in long-term learning, the researchers tested students a week later to determine if taking more notes on a laptop was helpful when reviewing before the test. Without note review, both groups showed similar performance; but with a 10-minute review, students with handwritten notes performed better on both factual and conceptual questions. The findings of the experiments might imply an advantage for handwritten notes in processing information. However, it is also possible that, because of processing information to a greater depth, reviewing these notes reminded the students of the lecture information more effectively than reviewing laptop notes did.
“This isn’t about whether to use technology, but about how to use it intentionally.” Pam Mueller noted, “When the goal is to deeply understand and apply concepts, forcing students to actively engage with information by hand, rather than passively typing it, proves to be a more effective approach.”
8. What do Pam and Daniel’s experiments focus on?
A. The value of two note-taking methods. B. The long-term benefits of handwriting.
C. The effectiveness of writing lessons. D. The advantages of technology in memory.
9. What does the underlined word “retained” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Recorded. B. Understood. C. Discussed. D. Explained.
10. What do we know about the findings of the experiments?
A. Handwritten notes improves deeper learning.
B. Taking more notes leads to better performance.
C. Laptop notes are superior for memorizing facts.
D. More detailed notes help with short-term recall.
11. What does Pam Mueller suggest about classroom technology?
A. Replace it with handwriting. B. Avoid it in conceptual learning.
C. Use it for deep understanding. D. Apply it based on learning goals.
【答案】8. A 9. B 10. A 11. D

【导语】这是一篇说明文。研究表明,尽管笔记本电脑记笔记速度快,但手写笔记能促进对概念的深度理解和长期记忆。专家建议应根据具体的学习目标来选择使用科技或手写。
【8题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“To compare the effectiveness of handwritten and typed classroom notes, Pam Mueller from Princeton and Daniel Oppenheimer from UCLA conducted experiments in a simulated (模拟的) classroom environment, where groups of students — sample sizes ranged from 67 to 151 — watched video lectures and took notes either by hand or on laptops, with the Internet switched off and other programs disabled to avoid distraction.(为了比较手写笔记和打字笔记的效果,普林斯顿大学的帕姆·穆勒和加州大学洛杉矶分校的丹尼尔·奥彭海默在模拟的课堂环境中进行了实验。实验中,学生们分成小组(样本规模从67人到151人不等),观看视频讲座并以手写或在笔记本电脑上记录笔记,同时关闭了网络并禁用了其他程序以避免分心)”可知,帕姆和丹尼尔的实验主要关注两种笔记方法的价值。故选A。
【9题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词后文“The tests consisted of both factual questions and conceptual-application questions, which were designed to assess their understanding of key concepts in the videos. The results showed that while laptop users recorded much more words, the two groups performed equally on factual questions. However, laptop users performed much worse on conceptual-application questions.(讲座结束后,学生们首先进行了工作记忆能力的测试。
根据倒数第二段“Without note review, both groups showed similar performance; but with a 10-minute review, students with handwritten notes performed better on both factual and conceptual questions. The findings of the experiments might imply an advantage for handwritten notes in processing information. However, it is also possible that, because of processing information to a greater depth, reviewing these notes reminded the students of the lecture information more effectively than reviewing laptop notes did.(如果没有笔记复习,两组学生的表现相似;但进行10分钟的复习后,有手写笔记的学生在事实性和概念性问题上的表现都更好。实验结果可能表明,手写笔记在信息处理方面具有优势。然而,也有可能是因为对信息进行了更深入的处理,所以复习这些手写笔记比复习笔记本上的笔记更能有效地让学生回忆起讲座中的信息)”可知,手写笔记有助于实现更深入的学习。故选A。
【11题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段““This isn’t about whether to use technology, but about how to use it intentionally.” Pam Mueller noted, “When the goal is to deeply understand and apply concepts, forcing students to actively engage with information by hand, rather than passively typing it, proves to be a more effective approach.”(帕姆·穆勒指出:“这并非是关于是否要使用技术的问题,而是关于如何有目的地使用技术。当目标是深入理解并运用概念时,迫使学生亲手主动处理信息,而非被动地输入信息,会证明是一种更有效的方法。”)”可知,帕姆·穆勒建议根据学习目标来应用课堂技术。故选D。

Researchers at the University of Maryland have developed batteries that use a product found in crustacean (甲壳纲动物) shells to store energy. The new batteries are more eco-friendly, energy efficient and affordable compared to traditional ones. The scientists are now pushing to have the product adopted in the commercial production of batteries. They say that using this product is necessary owing to the increased move towards electric cars and green energy at large.
The world is rapidly changing towards green energy and batteries are at the center of this move, so it is necessary to make batteries eco-friendly. “We think both biodegradability (生物降解性) of material and the performance of the batteries are important for a product, which has the potential to be commercialized,” said Liangbing Hu, the lead author of the study.
According to the study published in Matter, traditional batteries could be quite harmful to the environment. For instance, products such as lithium (锂)used in batteries can stay in the environment for hundreds or thousands of years.
Crustaceans such as shrimp, lobsters and crabs have hard skeletons whose cells contain a substance making the shells hard and resistant. Interestingly, this substance is available widely in nature and is often thrown away as waste in food industries. Scientists believe that the product could be used to improve the performance of batteries.
The researchers were able to come up with a cheaper and more renewable battery which is 99.7% energy efficient even after 1000 battery cycles. That is about 400 hours. Further, they found that the batteries can break down in soil in five months. The leftover zinc, a common metal, can be recovered for continuous recycling.
“The design of new batteries that are respectful of the environment, cheap and producing high discharge capacity, is one of the more important items that must be developed in the coming years,” said Antonio Romero, professor of material sciences at the University of Cartagena in Spain.
12. Why are researchers developing the new batteries?
A. To employ a product as storage. B. To replace the traditional batteries.
C. To address needs of clean energy. D. To use waste from food industries.
13. What is an advantage of employing the substance from crustaceans?
A. It costs less than lithium. B. It reduces food waste.
C. It makes batteries harder. D. It is naturally plentiful.
14. How does the author describe the new batteries in paragraph 5?
A. By quoting experts. B. By providing statistics.
C. By giving examples. D. By making comparisons.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Lithium Batteries:A Threat to Environment
B. Crustacean Shells Powering Future Batteries
C. Food Waste:A New Source of Green Energy
D. Zinc Recovery Supporting Battery Development
【答案】12. C 13. D 14. B 15. B

At first glance, the idea of living a minimalist (极简主义的) lifestyle may sound difficult, restrictive, or even boring. I was a bit doubtful when I first decided to take on minimalist living. ____16____ Becoming a minimalist has given me more time and freedom for what I love and value.
It’s pretty common for beginners to think that minimalism starts with hard-to-manage habits and rules. ____17____ Minimalism starts with your mindset, the lens through which you are viewing your life, then moves outward from there to become actionable habits and steps.
Another big misunderstanding when it comes to living a minimalist life is that the main goal of becoming a minimalist is to get rid of as much stuff as possible. Wrong again! The main goal of minimalism is to get rid of the things that don’t contribute to the value of your daily life. ____18____
In order to make more space for the things you value, you first have to identify what those things are. Ask yourself what your life could use more of and what you could use less of in your day-to-day life. ____19____ If something is annoying you in your day-to-day life, you had better address these things and keep them from dragging you down further.
____20____ When you’re getting started, don’t focus too much on the end result or on the most difficult things to change. Start with the easiest things to change and work your way up from there. Making small amounts of progress can help improve your motivation and inspire you to keep going.
A. It’s nothing but an excuse.
B. This couldn’t be further from the truth!
C. Fixing what bothers you is also necessary.
D. This leaves more space for you to boost productivity.
E. But doing so has given me a life I genuinely love living.
F. So you can make space for what’s most important to you.
G. Just start simple and realize becoming a minimalist is a journey.
【答案】16 E 17. B 18. F 19. C 20. G

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Last week, frozen cookie dough (面团) helped me in repairing a neighborhood conflict.
It all began when a new neighbor, a college student, moved in across the street. He unloaded a set of cornhole boards (袋板球游戏) from a truck and placed them on his front yard. I knew those boards were for “cornhole,” an outdoor game where you throw bags at a hole on the opposite boards. But the sight of the boards brought back bad memories for me. Years ago, my husband and I lived near the university, where the sounds of cheering crowds and loud music lasted late into the night and early morning. We finally moved to a quieter part of town at great expense to escape the noise.
I had inherited rage (暴怒) and struggled to change. I went to the doctor, which helped soften it, but it was still inside me like a volcano. Occasionally, it explodes, and I say things I regret. The best way I repair damage is with food — gifting homemade soup, bread, or treats. I had seen how this could open a hurt heart. Of course, I’d rather not hurt anyone.
Now, seeing those boards through my kitchen window, those frustrating memories and anger rushed back. I marched over, knocked, and demanded their removal due to the noise the game would create. I expected an apology. Instead, he met my anger with his own: “Who are you? What gives you the right to make such a ridiculous demand?” His refusal to apologize angered me more. I yelled things that shocked me. My husband, seeing the cornhole boards and predicting my reaction, pulled me away as I told the young man it wasn’t over.
The rest of the day, I still felt angry. However, the next morning, I awoke ashamed. I questioned why I messed things up again, and why I couldn’t control my anger. I recalled how I’d hurt others before — like a friend and my son — and how I’d used food to apologize.

【答案】范文
I remembered the frozen cookie dough I’d saved in the fridge. I quickly mixed it with some sugar and butter, then popped the tray into the oven. The sweet aroma of vanilla and chocolate chips soon filled the kitchen, gradually melting away my lingering anxiety. I packed the warm, golden cookies into a nice tin box. With a deep breath, I walked across the street, holding the box tightly, determined to fix the mess I had made with my unprovoked anger.
A few seconds later, the student opened the door. Seeing me, he looked surprised and hesitated for a moment, clearly recalling my rude behavior from yesterday. I looked down at my feet, my cheeks burning with shame, and handed him the tin. “I am so sorry about yesterday,” I said sincerely. “I overreacted because of some bad memories. These are for you.” A look of relief replaced the wariness on his face. He took the cookies and smiled. “Thanks, neighbor. I’m sorry I was defensive, too.” Since then, we’ve been on good terms, proving that sometimes, a little sweetness can indeed mend a broken fence.

D
Researchers at the University of Maryland have developed batteries that use a product found in crustacean (甲壳纲动物) shells to store energy. The new batteries are more eco-friendly energy efficient and affordable compared to traditional ones.

Last week frozen cookie dough (面团) helped me in repairing a neighborhood conflict.
