As a child growing up in Albuquerque, Adeline Murthy spent countless afternoons walking through the bush, the cottonwood forest that lines the Rio Grande. “I studied biology because of the experiences in the natural world around the Rio Grande,” she says.
Today, she channels that early love into her work as a planner for Santa Fe County, where she helps protect and restore open spaces along the river. But Adeline doesn’t just rely on maps and models; she listens to the community, to the locals.
In Santa Fe County, Adeline has led wetland restoration efforts that improve water flow and soil health and make space for life to return. Input from the surrounding community plays a role. Besides, when there are tools like a flow device — a pipe fixed through a beaver (河狸) dam that controls water levels to prevent flooding while allowing beavers to stay — and protective cages for trees which stop greedy beavers, strife between humans and nature’s ecosystem can be avoided.
For Adeline, freshwater restoration is not judged merely by engineering figures such as the flow volume or the degree to which water quality has improved. Her highest priority is the way that reappearing animals and people share the restored landscape: cranes (鹤) feeding in the shallows, beavers rebuilding homes, and at the same time, local families walking, fishing or simply enjoying the riverbank alongside them.
Beavers and humans sharing space requires ongoing work and continuous adaptation. When beavers live in human inhabited areas, there might be issues with human infrastructure (基础设施) that requires adaptation and management. It’s not always simple, but there have been payoffs. “We had an amazing experience in 2022 where we spotted fireflies here for the first time in decades,” Adeline recalls.
4. Why did Adeline study biology?
A. Because of the lost open spaces. B. Because of the ruined Rio Grande.
C. Because of her passion for nature. D. Because of her role in the community.
5. What does the underlined word “strife” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Difference. B. Harmony. C. Competition. D. Conflict.
6. What does Adeline value most to assess freshwater restoration?
A. The appearance of rare species. B. The water-quality improvement.
C. The volume of the freshwater flow. D. The human-wildlife coexistence.
7. What does the return of fireflies symbolize?
A. The recovery of human habitats. B. The importance of wild animals.
C. The positive impact of restoration. D. The completion of Adeline’s work.
C 5. D 6. D 7. C
根据第一段中“‘I studied biology because of the experiences in the natural world around the Rio Grande,’ she says.(她说:‘我学习生物学是因为在格兰德河周边自然世界中的经历。’)”
根据第三段中“Besides, when there are tools like a flow device — a pipe fixed through a beaver dam that controls water levels to prevent flooding while allowing beavers to stay — and protective cages for trees which stop greedy beavers, strife between humans and nature’s ecosystem can be avoided.(此外,当有诸如流量装置——一种穿过河狸大坝的管道,可控制水位防止洪水同时让河狸留存——以及防止贪婪河狸破坏树木的保护笼这类工具时,人类与自然生态系统之间的strife就可以避免。)”
根据第四段中“Her highest priority is the way that reappearing animals and people share the restored landscape: cranes feeding in the shallows, beavers rebuilding homes, and at the same time, local families walking, fishing or simply enjoying the riverbank alongside them.(她最看重的是重现的动物与人类共享修复后景观的方式:鹤在浅滩觅食,河狸重建家园,与此同时,当地家庭在岸边散步、钓鱼或只是享受河畔风光。)”
根据第五段中“‘We had an amazing experience in 2022 where we spotted fireflies here for the first time in decades,’ Adeline recalls.(Adeline回忆道:‘2022年我们有了一次奇妙的经历,几十年来首次在这里发现了萤火虫。’)”

For many, fitness trackers have become essential tools for monitoring how many calories they’ve burned in a day. But for those being overweight, who are known to exhibit differences in the walking pattern, speed, energy burned and more, these devices often underestimate or overestimate actual activity.
People with obesity (肥胖) could gain major health insights from activity trackers, but most current devices miss the mark. Current activity-monitoring algorithms(算法) that fitness trackers use are built for people without overweight. Waist-worn trackers often misread energy burn because of walking pattern changes and device tipping in people with higher body weight.
Now, a new algorithm has been developed, which enables smartwatches to more accurately monitor the calories burned by people being overweight. The technology bridges a critical gap in fitness technology, said Nabil Alshurafa, whose HABits Lab created and tested the algorithm specifically tuned for people being overweight. They put the algorithm on the web so that any scientist can download it and run the same tests. In this way, others can check the results, point out any weak parts, and add new ideas. Their next step is to launch an activity-monitoring app later this year that will be available for smart phone use.
“Without an effective algorithm for wrist devices, we would still be in the dark about exactly how much activity and energy people with obesity really get each day — slowing our ability to tailor measures and improve health outcomes,” Alshurafa said. By using data from fitness trackers, the new algorithm compares to gold-standard methods of measuring energy burn and can estimate how much energy someone with obesity is using every minute, achieving over 95% accuracy in real-world situations. This advancement makes it easier for more people with obesity to track their daily activities and energy use. We regard “standard” workouts as the ultimate test, but those standards leave out so many people. We must rethink how gyms, trackers and exercise programs measure success — so no one’s hard work goes unseen.
8. What problem do current fitness trackers have?
A. They’re bad at recording walking styles. B. They’re inaccurate for overweight users.
C. They all underestimate people’s movement. D. They use algorithms for limited exercises.
9. Why did the lab release the new algorithm as an open one?
A. To encourage further improvement. B. To promote much wider application.
C. To contribute to scientists’ new ideas. D. To compete with existent algorithms.
10. What does the author suggest about “standard” workouts?
A. Doing ultimate tests. B. Measuring hard work.
C. Employing diverse data. D. Including more people.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Obesity Defeats Most Fitness Trackers B. A Better Algorithm for Heavier Bodies
C. A New App for Counting Energy Burn D. Overweight People Face New Challenges
B 9. A 10. D 11. B
根据第一段“But for those being overweight, who are known to exhibit differences in the walking pattern, speed, energy burned and more, these devices often underestimate or overestimate actual activity.(但对于那些已知在行走模式、速度、消耗的能量等方面存在差异的超重人群来说,这些设备往往会低估或高估实际活动量。)”以及第二段“Current activity-monitoring algorithms that fitness trackers use are built for people without overweight.(健身追踪器使用的当前活动监测算法是为非超重人群设计的。)”
根据第三段“They put the algorithm on the web so that any scientist can download it and run the same tests. In this way, others can check the results, point out any weak parts, and add new ideas.(他们将该算法放在网上,以便任何科学家都可以下载并进行相同的测试。通过这种方式,其他人可以检查结果,指出任何薄弱环节,并添加新的想法。)”可知,实验室将新算法公开是为了鼓励进一步改进。故选A。
根据第四段“We regard ‘standard’ workouts as the ultimate test, but those standards leave out so many people. We must rethink how gyms, trackers and exercise programs measure success — so no one’s hard work goes unseen.(我们将‘标准’锻炼视为最终测试,但这些标准遗漏了很多人。我们必须重新思考健身房、追踪器和锻炼计划如何衡量成功——这样才能让每个人的努力都被看见。)”可知,作者建议“标准”锻炼应该涵盖更多人群。故选D。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第三段“Now, a new algorithm has been developed, which enables smartwatches to more accurately monitor the calories burned by people being overweight.(现在,一种新的算法已经被开发出来,它能让智能手表更准确地监测超重人群燃烧的卡路里。)”
D
A cyclist, biking through traffic on a downtown street, suddenly turned to the right. Then a passer-by was knocked down. Later, when the police interviewed witnesses, their accounts differed. “She just stepped right into the bike route while texting,” one man said. “No way,” a woman spoke sharply. “That guy was flying — he didn’t even slow down.” Two viewpoints. One event. This isn’t just about attention or memory; it reflects how human minds are wired.
From an evolutionary aspect, variation in thought is a strength. Natural selection does not only favor physical characteristics but also shapes cognitive (认知的) diversity. Our ancestors faced various challenges. Those who could interpret situations differently from others sometimes survived when the majority made mistakes.
That variation in thought often meant the difference between survival and death. If everyone in a population reacts to threats identically, a shared blind spot could destroy the group completely. Cognitive diversity prevents danger sometimes and boosts the likelihood that someone will respond effectively to adapt and survive various challenges.
Our visual system does not record reality like a camera; instead, it interprets sensory input, influenced by expectations, past experiences, and emotional states. Two people can watch the same scene but “see” differently because their brains emphasize different details. The brain constructs reality using “predictions” based on previous encounters. These mental models prepare us to respond quickly but also introduce bias into our perceptions.
Humans require a shared baseline of reality to function as societies. However, even this is subject to negotiation. Disagreements over facts may seem functional, but they enable us to argue, reflect, and innovate. Our disagreements are not mere noise —they are how new ideas emerge and old assumptions are tested.
We live in an era characterized by division and widespread misinformation. It is easy to perceive those disagreeing with us as unfriendly. However, in many cases, they just view the world in a different way. Instead of demanding sameness, we should appreciate constructive disagreement. It’s not a threat — it’s the engine that encourages us to think, adapt, and move forward.
12. Why is the bicycle accident presented at the beginning?
A. To collect information from witnesses. B. To stress the importance of road safety.
C. To prove seeing isn’t exactly believing. D. To show people don’t all think the same.
13. How does cognitive diversity enhance group survival?
A. By reducing the risks. B. By selecting the fittest.
C. By preventing mistakes. D. By drawing rapid responses.
14. Which of the following contributes to the biased perception?
A. Poor memory. B. Subjective judgement.
C. Complex details. D. Groundless predictions.
15. What does the author view disagreement as?
A. A danger to society. B. A boost to the sameness.
C. A driver of progress. D. A result of misinformation.
D 13. A 14. B 15. C
根据第一段中的“Later, when the police interviewed witnesses, their accounts differed. “She just stepped right into the bike route while texting,” one man said. “No way,” a woman spoke sharply. “That guy was flying — he didn’t even slow down.” Two viewpoints. One event. This isn’t just about attention or memory; it reflects how human minds are wired.(后来,警方询问目击者时,他们的说法各不相同。
根据第三段中的“If everyone in a population reacts to threats identically, a shared blind spot could destroy the group completely. Cognitive diversity prevents danger sometimes and boosts the likelihood that someone will respond effectively to adapt and survive various challenges. (如果一个群体中的所有人对威胁都做出相同的反应,那么一个共同的认知盲点就可能彻底摧毁整个群体。认知多样性有时能规避危险,还能提高有人做出有效反应、以适应并度过各种挑战的可能性。)”可知,认知多样性能够减少群体面临的风险,从而提升群体的生存几率。故选A项。
根据第四段中的“Our visual system does not record reality like a camera; instead, it interprets sensory input, influenced by expectations, past experiences, and emotional states. Two people can watch the same scene but “see” differently because their brains emphasize different details. The brain constructs reality using “predictions” based on previous encounters. These mental models prepare us to respond quickly but also introduce bias into our perceptions.
根据最后一段中的“Instead of demanding sameness, we should appreciate constructive disagreement. It’s not a threat—— it’s the engine that encourages us to think, adapt, and move forward.(我们不应强求观点一致,而应重视富有建设性的分歧。它并非威胁,而是促使我们思考、适应并不断前进的引擎。)”可知,作者将分歧视为推动进步的动力。故选C项。
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Everyone has curiosity. The genius, Albert Einstein once said, “I have no special talents. I am only passionately curious.” ____16____ a born drive to learn, explore, and make sense of the world. Curiosity motivates us to question assumptions, encounter new perspectives, and tolerate uncertainty.
____17____. When we approach challenges with genuine interest we develop the habit of looking for multiple methods, using both knowledge and improvisation (即兴创作), and refusing to give up. Curious people ask more and better questions: What else might explain this? What other methods could work? Doing so helps open up alternative strategies and leads to creative, successful solutions.
Curiosity also strengthens relationships and emotional intelligence. I’ve always been curious about how my communication affects the people I interact with. I ask questions and genuinely listen to them. ____18____. For example, in chats with friends or co-workers, I often ask about their feelings and views. This shows care and gives me useful insights into their experiences.
Since curiosity benefits us in different ways, it’s necessary to learn how to develop it. One simple yet powerful way is asking questions. When we are faced with a problem or new information, repeatedly ask “why” to dig deeper into the subject. Use open-ended questions that cannot be answered with a simple “yes” or “no”, like “What do you think about this?” or “How does this work?” ____19____
Tonight, give yourself three minutes; look at your phone battery and ask, “Why does it drop faster when I’m outside in winter?” Don’t search online. Just think about it. You don’t need to become a chemist. ____20____. Tomorrow it might push you to open a science blog, ask your teacher, or even sign up for a science club and build a better power pack.
A. Just keep that question alive
B. Curiosity makes us better problem solvers
C. Such a remark seizes the essence of curiosity
D. Curiosity grows when we step out of comfort zones
E. Doing so enables me to connect with them more deeply
F. Curiosity deeply impacts personal and professional relationships
G. Such questions lead to more detailed responses and further exploration
C 17. B 18. E 19. G 20. A

Rocky was 19 when doctors told him his recent nosebleed and the pain in his leg bones were from blood cancer. The treatment was full of pains and sufferings, but he never thought of giving up and fought like a lion.
Still, the cancer wouldn’t leave him. A doctor told him his only remaining option was a stem cell transplant Stem cells can be used to take on various dangerous diseases, including blood cancer. Rocky asked about his chance of survival. He was told it was fifty-fifty, assuming doctors could find someone who was a match.
His family members got tested. None matched. Two stem cell registry events were then held near his hometown, which attracted a total of about 3,000 people. Still, no luck. At least these events were not only for him; 20 people who were tested were later found to be suitable donors for other people. Then his doctor told him somebody had turned up in the United States, who might be a match for him.
Tingle was working as a dental nurse and, at the time, was preparing for a marathon. She was 54 years old, well beyond what is often considered the best age for stem cell donation. A year earlier, she got tested to help a local boy battling a rare form of blood cancer. She wasn’t a match. Recently, her test results were noticed in the database by Rocky’s treatment team who found that, after repeated disappointments and a search of the whole world, she appeared to be a perfect match for Rocky.
As the news reached Rocky’s family, a wave of hope washed over them. They had been through so much together, and the thought that a stranger halfway across the world could be Rocky’s savior was nothing short of a miracle. But would she donate?

The family decided to have a try and contact Tingle. With trembling hands, Rocky’s mother dialed the number, her heart pounding with anticipation. When Tingle answered, her voice was warm and kind. After explaining Rocky’s situation, there was a brief silence on the line. Then, Tingle said without hesitation, “I’ll do it. I want to help.” Tears of joy streamed down Rocky’s mother’s face as she conveyed the good news to the rest of the family. Tingle soon underwent further tests and the family waited anxiously for the big day.
Months later, Rocky made a full recovery and wrote Tingle a letter. “Dear Tingle,” he began, “your selfless act has given me a second chance at life. I’ll forever be grateful for your kindness and bravery. You’ve shown me the incredible power of human compassion. I hope one day I can pay it forward and help someone in need just like you did for me.” With the letter sent, Rocky looked forward to the day when he could meet his hero in person.

C

____17____. When we approach challenges with genuine interest, we develop the habit of looking for multiple methods, using both knowledge and improvisation (即兴创作), and refusing to give up. Curious people ask more and better questions: What else might explain this? What other methods could work? Doing so helps open up alternative strategies and leads to creative, successful solutions.

This shows care and gives me useful insights into their experiences.
