In our daily lives, we talk with many people. Being polite is not just a good habit; it’s a key to making communication more pleasant. English has special ways to show respect, especially when we ask for help or permission (许可).
When we ask someone to do something, how we ask makes a big difference. Instead of a direct order like “Buy me a bag”, a polite request is better. Using “Could you please...?” works well. “Could” sounds softer than “can”, which shows more respect. Adding “please” makes it even friendlier.
When we want permission, the words we choose are also important. “Can I...?” is common with friends, but “Could I...?” is more polite. Asking a friend, “Can I borrow your book?” is fine. But asking a teacher, “Could I ask a question?” shows respect for their role.
Politeness is also two-way. When you cannot help someone, just saying “No” can sound impolite. It’s better to give a short reason. For example, you could say, “I’m sorry, but I have to finish my homework first.” This shows you respect their request, even if you can’t agree.
Using these polite words is an easy way to build better relationships.
49. What does the writer think about being polite?
A. It is helpful for better communication. B. It is hard to learn in a short time.
C. It is only useful when talking to teachers. D. It means always saying “yes” to others.
50. Which is the politest way to ask someone to sweep the floor according to the passage?
A. Sweep the floor now! B. Can you sweep the floor?

Have you ever felt like you are falling when you are about to sleep? Sometimes, your body may give a sudden jump. If this happens to you, don’t be afraid. You are not alone. In fact, this is called a hypnic jerk (入睡抽动). It is very common. A report says up to 70% of people have this experience. But what causes it?
Here are some ideas. Some scientists believe that the feeling of falling comes from the body relaxing, especially if you feel nervous or can’t find a comfortable position. As you start to sleep, your body becomes relaxed. But your brain is still awake. It mistakes your relaxing body as a sign that you are really falling. Your brain thinks you are in danger. Then, it quickly wakes your body up to “save” you.
Other scientists believe that it has something to do with our sleep stages (阶段). We have two main stages of sleep: non-rapid eye movement (NREM) and rapid eye movement (REM). During REM, our body may work in an unusual way. If your body jumps into REM too quickly, these small changes might cause the twitches. For example, sometimes your leg or arm moves suddenly when you are starting to sleep.
But no matter the cause, experts agree that hypnic jerks, though sometimes scary, are harmless. If it wakes you up, just turn over and go back to sleep. But remember: drinking coffee in the evening or feeling stressed may make hypnic jerks happen more often.

C. Could you please sweep the floor? D. I want you to sweep the floor.

52. The writer mentions “Up to 70% of people” in Paragraph 1 to .
A. show the feeling is common B. describe a serious health problem
C. explain why we need good sleep D. advise us to see a doctor
53. What does the underlined word “twitches” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Slow movements. B. Deep dreams. C. Sudden jumps. D. Quiet sounds.
54. Which of the following is TRUE?
A. Only a few people have the experience of hypnic jerks.
B. Hypnic jerks are very scary and they are bad for our health.
C. Our brain and body are both relaxed when we start to sleep.
D. Hypnic jerks may happen more often if you drink coffee at night.

If you are a nature lover, you must visit Zhangye Geopark (地质公园) in China! It’s recognized by UNESCO as one of the best geoparks in the world. Here, you can enjoy the beauty of the rainbow (彩虹) hills.
They are low hills that look like waves and have many different ▲ , just like a rainbow! There is little grass growing on the land. When you see the hills from above, it’s like you’re looking at rainbows painted on the ground.
You may wonder how these colourful hills came into being. Millions of years ago, this area was under a lake. Over time, rivers brought in sand and stones with different kinds of metal elements (元素). These were left in layers (层) on the bottom of the lake. Some layers were red, some yellow, and others turned purple or blue. Later, as the climate became colder and drier, the lake dried up. Then, something amazing happened!
The underground land began to rise up and push against each other. The layers of sandstone were lifted higher and higher. Through years of wind, sun, and rain, they formed the colourful hills we see today.
June to September is the most wonderful time to visit. The mornings and evenings are cooler than the hot days, giving you the perfect weather to enjoy the sunrises and sunsets. Sunshine after a summer rain will make the colours even brighter and more beautiful.
