Preston Mutanga first got interested in animation (动画) when he was seven. Back then, he made simple videos and posted some of them, mostly in a 3D style, on YouTube.
For years, Preston has spent a lot of time working on his videos and perfecting his skills. When he gets home from school, he rushes to animate, and then does his homework, but if there is extra time, he continues to animate until he has to go to bed. “I enjoy animation because the possibilities are pretty much endless,” he said.
When Preston saw the Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse trailer (预告片), he thought it would be fun to recreate. The 14-year-old boy then replicated (复制) every trailer shot using CGI LEGO characters and uploaded the video to YouTube without any idea that it was about to change his life.
The trailer finally caught the eye of actual Sony producers working on the movie. Those producers got in touch with Preston and asked him to animate a work. Christina Steinberg, one of the producers, said Preston was able to reveal the emotion of the movie but also the timing, so his animation made the characters’ feelings clear to everyone who watched it. “It might look easy, but it’s extremely hard to do,” she said.
Preston worked with the production team over his spring break to create a short video. “He is so creative, and he was so wonderful to work with,” said Steinberg. Preston said his work went through several revisions, during which he got feedback and made changes. Finally, he was just excited to be a part of the team.
In the long run, Preston wants to continue to animate and make art. He hopes one day to become a professional animator or director. Preston’s advice for other kids who want to go after their dreams is “Never second guess yourself. You’re the only one that’s stopping you from doing what you want to do.”
4. Why did Preston recreate the Spider-Man trailer?
A. To apply for a job at Sony.
B. To complete a school project.
C. To express his personal interest.
D. To show his skills to producers.
5. What does the underlined word “reveal” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Show. B. Limit. C. Track. D. Record.
6. What impressed Steinberg about Preston according to paragraph 5?
A. His quick learning speed.
B. His creativity and personality.
C. His use of advanced software.
D. His professional training background.
7. What is the main message of Preston’s story?
A. Family support is key to success.
B. Social media success happens by chance.
C. Keep trying and follow your heart bravely.
D. Work hard at school to prepare for the future.
【答案】4. C 5. A 6. B 7. C

Do you know what is living in your backyard?
Almost 380 of the 1,900 nationally listed threatened species can be found in urban (城市的) areas across Australia and are facing extinction. The latest five-yearly State of the Environment report was released (发布) in July and found there are growing pressures on Australian urban wildlife mainly from the reduction of habitat.
The report found that there are now more than 1,900 species listed as threatened; of these,42 extremely endangered species have no protection in the National Reserve System, which is Australia’s network of protected areas. The number of Australia’s threatened species has seen an 8 percent rise since 2016, reaching 1,918 in June 2021, up from 1,774 in 2016.
To address this problem, the World Wide Fund for Nature has released a backyard tool for everyday Australians to use to help save some of the endangered wildlife found in urban areas. It’s a tool to help local people identify such species found in their backyards and report their findings to the Fund and the authorities. Released on Tuesday, the new interactive tool “My Backyard” allows users to discover which threatened species live in their local area and what measures can be taken to help protect them.
WWF-Australia chief conservation (保护) officer Rachel Lowry said people might be surprised to learn that bushland and forests near cities are home to some of Australia’s rare (稀有的) animals.
“It is a fun and interactive tool that also makes it easier for people to take action, to reach out to their local authorities and call for better protection of our unique Australian wildlife,” Ms Lowry said.
“Generally, Australia’s native animals are under increasing pressure from climate change, habitat loss, shortage of food, pollution or hunting. But I’d also argue that our silence is affecting our threatened species because they need our voices now more than ever,” she added.
8. What is the main reason for growing pressures on Australian wildlife according to the report?
A. habitat loss. B. Shortage of food. C. Pollution. D. Overhunting.
9. What do the numbers in paragraph 3 show?
A. Urban areas host most species. B. Protection measures are working.
C. The reporting system is useless. D. More species are at risk of extinction.
10. What is the purpose of the “My Backyard” tool?
A. To collect money for animal treatment. B. To educate users on climate science.
C. To identify and report local rare species. D. To help create fun games for families.
11. What does Rachel Lowry think of the tool?
A. User-friendly. B. Costly. C. Worthless. D. Experimental.
【答案】8. A 9. D 10. C 11. A

It’s quite interesting that two members of the U. S. men’s Olympic alpine ski team had their birthdays during the PyeongChang Winter Games. Plus, five more celebrated their birthdays within two months of the event. This birthday pattern (模式) might seem random (随机的), but it’s not completely by chance. Young athletes are grouped by birth year, so kids born earlier are often stronger and get chosen first by coaches. This early choice gives these kids a clear advantage that can last throughout their sports life, affecting their performance in sports and school.
Some sports, like American football, have rules to make things fair for kids of different ages. But in other sports, like gymnastics and skating, being younger can actually be an advantage. Boys’ sports often favor older kids more than girls’ sports do. Even with these challenges, coaches need to make sure all kids have the same chances, no matter how old they are.
Coaches need to be aware of age bias (偏见) so they don’t accidentally leave out kids who are really good. It’s important to make sure every child is given a chance to enjoy sports. Also, we should think about how age bias affects younger kids. Age isn’t the only thing that decides if someone is good at sports; having the right equipment (装备) and support is important too, and above all, practicing a lot is the most important thing.
We also need new ideas to deal with age bias. David Mann, who studies sports, tried one idea by watching 10-year-olds play soccer. He found that when coaches knew kids’ age by certain means (like shirt numbers showing relative age), they didn’t always pick the oldest ones. By doing so, they can reduce age-related bias. This shows that learning about age bias can help make things fairer. If coaches work to fight age bias, every kid can have a chance to do their best and have fun in sports.
12. What can we learn about the athletes’ birthday pattern from paragraph 1?
A. It was completely accidental. B. It’s a result of how athletes are chosen.
C. It’s due to the timing of the Olympic Games. D. It gives athletes a stronger mind in the game.
13. What can be inferred about age bias in youth sports from paragraph 3?
A. It makes sports much less fun. B. It results in too much weight on practice.
C. It gives older children an unfair advantage. D. It may lead to talented players being overlooked.
14. Why did David Mann conduct his soccer study?
A. To find a way to lessen age bias. B. To help coaches pick the oldest kids.
C. To show shirt numbers are unimportant. D. To prove younger players are more skilled.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. How Coaches Pick Their Best Players. B. The Key to Success: Practice Makes Perfect.
C. Fighting for Fairness: Age Bias in Youth Sports. D. How We Find Birthday Secrets of Olympic Athletes.
【答案】12. B 13. D 14. A 15. C

【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“Coaches need to be aware of age bias (偏见) so they don’t accidentally leave out kids who are really good.(教练们需要意识到年龄偏见问题,以免无意中遗漏那些真正表现出色的孩子)”可知,青少年体育运动中存在年龄歧视可能会导致有天赋的运动员被忽视。故选D。

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Anya, an 18-year-old university student, was born in Riverton, a small village in the countryside. Her family moved to the city of Harbourview when she was very young. In the summer vacation of 2020, they returned to their old family home in Riverton.
She was very surprised to find that in Riverton, not many children went to school regularly. Almost half of the adults in the village found reading difficult. Many families could not afford school books, so they often took their children out of school. Some parents did not think education was important, and many children had to help their parents with farm work, even if they wanted to learn to read.
Anya always wanted to help others. She was good at speaking in public and often talked about the value of education at university events. She was well-known and respected by other students.
Not afraid of challenges, Anya decided to do something for the village children. She told her family elders about her idea to create a library. Many of them did not agree. They thought a young woman should not spend her time on such a project.
After many talks, Anya finally persuaded them. A relative let her use an old guest house. She used about $70, which she had won from a speaking competition, to repair it. With the help of her uncle, Ben, and her cousin, Leo, she started the work. They painted the walls, fixed the roof, added lights and bookshelves, and brought in chairs and a table. They put colorful pictures on the walls. Looking at the bright new room, Anya felt very excited, imagining children reading books there.
However, there were far too few books. This shortage became a real challenge for Anya. Just as she was wondering what to do, an idea came to her.

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Maybe she could turn to the online community for help. Anya wasted no time. She detailed the village's educational hardships and her library vision in a social media post, accompanied by photos of the half-empty shelves. The post quickly gained traction. People from different corners of the country, touched by her story, reached out. Some promised to send boxes of books from their personal collections, while others transferred funds to assist in purchasing new ones. Anya was filled with hope as she watched the support accumulate.
Finally, the library was opened. The village children flocked to the library, their faces alight with anticipation. Anya welcomed them with a broad smile. As they explored the shelves and settled down to read, the room filled with a contented hush. The library became a beacon of knowledge in the village. Parents, witnessing their children's new-found enthusiasm for learning, started to value education more. Anya felt a deep sense of accomplishment, knowing she had made a lasting impact.

C Keep trying and follow your heart bravely.
D. Work hard at school to prepare for the future.

10 What is the purpose of the “My Backyard” tool?
A. To collect money for animal treatment. B. To educate users on climate science.
