Sofie Roux was accompanying her physician parents on a work trip to Malawi in 2019 when she befriended a girl named Faith. They bonded over their love of art. They have their future ambitions: Roux wanted to be an architect; Faith, an animator. But Faith’s school had no electricity or running water — let alone the technology to teach computer animation.
Roux, who grew up spending her summers in Africa, had raised for computers to make STEAM education more accessible for girls. The lack of electricity at Faith’s school presented another problem. “The best way I could think to address it was by building a prototype (雏形) of a solution,” she says.
That’s how, at 16, Roux found herself in her Vancouver, British Columbia, backyard designing and building a computer lab inside a recycled shipping container. She dubbed the creation a BloomBox, hoping it would be a space where students would feel inspired to create.
Roux filled the lab with computing equipment, and then topped it with a solar roof for reliable power. In the summer of 2021, she took it to Faith’s high school in Blantyre, Malawi.
Once installed, the BloomBox caught the attention of the Malawi Ministry of Education, which saw potential in the labs to advance STEAM education. The ministry approved a plan to install 70 more labs across the country. “They want everyone to be very technologically literate by 2063,” Roux says.
To expand, Roux and a team of 30 professionals needed to address issues of efficiency, security, and transportation to remote communities. BloomBox Design Labs formed in 2023 as a public benefit company after moving all production to Malawi and South Africa to bring down costs, reduce transport time, and employ local workers.
When Roux finishes the 70 planned labs, they will reach 200,000 students so that their love of learning can blossom.
4. What made Roux and Faith become friends?
A. Their affection for art. B. Their similar life experiences.
C. Their shared future ambitions. D. Their sympathy for poor people.
5. What inspired Roux to create the BloomBox?
A. The shortage of art teachers in Africa. B. The high cost of computers in Malawi.

We’re living in a brave new world of affordable and effortless mobility for all, with the smartphone in your pocket a key to shared e-scooters, bikes and electric cars, and an Uber never more than five minutes away. But if you’re disabled or elderly, or living in a low-income area, using these shared mobility services becomes a lot more difficult.
Shared mobility could be a key part of a more sustainable transportation system. On-demand shared mobility that feeds into well-developed public transportation systems could reduce the number of vehicles in some cities by 90 percent and cut transportation emissions by 50 percent — but only if it largely replaces private car use.
To move more people away from private vehicles to shared ones, expanding access to a wider share of the population is an important first step, researchers say, because a lot of people are left out today.
A 2019 study of 10 U.S. cities for example, showed that white Americans have access to almost three times as many car-share locations and two times as many bike-share locations within a half-mile radius as African Americans. When hailing (呼叫) rides from their home, African Americans also wait up to 22 percent longer for the ride to arrive.
But even when efforts are made to expand services to underserved areas of a city, other hurdles exist. A fifth of low-income Americans still don’t have a smartphone and almost a quarter don’t have a bank account — both preconditions for using most such services. In addition, lack of familiarity with the bike-share system was holding a third of people back.
How to bridge the accessibility gap? Public agencies are the ones stepping in. A handful of cities in the United States, for example, have launched subsidy (补贴) programs for low-income residents, which have shown promise in increasing the use of shared mobility while decreasing the use of personal vehicles.
8. Who is less likely to use shared mobility easily?
A. Senior residents. B. Daily commuters. C. Smartphone users. D. Government officials.
9. What can be inferred about shared mobility from paragraph 2?
A. It should completely replace private cars.
B. It has become well-developed in most cities.
C. It has played a key role in public transportation.
D. It can contribute to reducing environmental pollution.
10. Why is the 2019 study mentioned?
A. To show service growth. B. To prove time efficiency.
C. To reveal access inequality. D. To compare transport systems.
11. What can be the most suitable title of the text?
A. The Future of Urban Public Transportation. B. The Benefits of Sustainable Transport Systems.
C. The Shift from Private Cars to Shared Services. D. The Challenges and Solutions for Shared Mobility.
【答案】8. A 9. D 10. C 11. D
【解析】

【11题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,特别是第一段内容“We’re living in a brave new world of affordable and effortless mobility for all, with the smartphone in your pocket a key to shared e-scooters, bikes and electric cars, and an Uber never more than five minutes away. But if you’re disabled or elderly, or living in a low-income area, using these shared mobility services becomes a lot more difficult.(我们正身处一个充满希望的新世界,人人都能轻松便捷地出行,只需随身携带一部智能手机,就能使用共享的电动滑板车、自行车和电动汽车,而且只需拨打 Uber 的电话就能立刻叫到一辆车,距离不超过五分钟。但如果你是残疾人、老年人,或者居住在低收入地区,使用这些共享出行服务就会变得困难得多。)”可推断,文章主要讨论了共享出行服务的普及和可持续性,以及这些服务在残疾人、老年人和低收入群体中面临的挑战,并提出了解决方案。由此可知,D项“The Challenges and Solutions for Shared Mobility(共享出行的挑战和解决方案)”是合适的标题。故选D。

You may have seen smart toilets that track your health, or mirrors that measure your blood pressure. As a biomedical reporter, I was curious to read a book that envisions (想象) how fast-evolving technology could transform healthcare. In Hacking Humanity: How technology can save your health and your life, Lara Lewington covers an impressive range of innovations, from medical robots to lab-grown organs and genetic editing to treat certain conditions. She also meets the characters and companies pioneering such innovations.
The start of the book covers wearable devices that track things like your sleep, exercise and blood sugar levels, explaining that we can now monitor our bodies like never before and analyzing this data could help doctors treat us more effectively. Subsequent sections were more interesting, such as a look at how innovations like 3D-printed organs are helping scientists develop new medicines. A passage covers blood tests and AI models that enable earlier detection and more personalized treatment of cancer. If you are less familiar with weight-loss drugs and anti-ageing research, Lewington also provides an engaging rundown of both.
As a tech-optimist, Lewington presents an optimistic view of the devices she encounters, often giving a series of impressive study results with relatively limited discussion of any caveats, though she ends by acknowledging that the shiniest technologies are often only available to a few people, and also stresses the need for tools to be tested on a more diverse range of people, including ethnic minority groups and women, who are often underrepresented in medical research.
Overall, Hacking Humanity may be a good pick for someone who is looking for a quick summary of the most ambitious ideas of medical innovation — but less so for a deeper and more critical analysis of where healthcare is heading. For example, research has suggested that some wearable heart-rate trackers may work less well for people with darker skin. It would have been nice to have such cases included in the book along with expert opinion on how we can learn from them.
12. What is the main focus of Hacking Humanity?
A. Dramatic change of AI models. B. History of robot development.
C. Impressive healthcare innovations. D. Discrimination in medical research.
13. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “caveats” in paragraph 3?
A. Secrets. B. Disadvantages. C. Expectations. D. Threats.
14. What is the author’s attitude towards Hacking Humanity?
A. Unfavourable. B. Optimistic. C. Objective. D. Unclear.
15. What is the text mainly about?
A. The future of wearable technology. B. A critical analysis of health tech.
C. The healthcare change led by AI. D. Medical innovations and limitations.
【答案】12. C 13. B 14. C 15. D
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇说明文。主要介绍 Lara Lewington 的书《Hacking Humanity》。文章既介绍了医疗技术的前沿创新,也指出了它们的局限与不足。
【12题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段“In Hacking Humanity: How technology can save your health and your life, Lara Lewington covers an impressive range of innovations, from medical robots to lab-grown organs and genetic editing to treat certain conditions.(在《Hacking Humanity: How technology can save your health and your life》一书中,Lara Lewington涵盖了从医疗机器人到实验室培育的器官,以及基因编辑治疗某些疾病等一系列令人印象深刻的创新。)”可知,《Hacking Humanity》的主要关注点是令人印象深刻的医疗保健创新。故选C。
【13题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段“As a tech-optimist, Lewington presents an optimistic view of the devices she encounters, often giving a series of impressive study results with relatively limited discussion of any caveats.(作为一个技术乐观主义者,Lewington对她所遇到的设备持乐观态度,经常给出一系列令人印象深刻的研究结果,但对其中的任何caveats的讨论相对有限。)”可知,but前后句为转折关系,虽然给出了一系列令人印象深刻的研究结果,但是对其中的任何缺点讨论相对有限,所以推测caveats的意思是“缺点”。故选B。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Overall, Hacking Humanity may be a good pick for someone who is looking for a quick summary of the most ambitious ideas of medical innovation — but less so for a deeper and more critical analysis of where healthcare is heading.(总的来说,对于那些想要快速了解医疗创新最雄心勃勃的想法的人来说,《Hacking Humanity》可能是一个不错的选择,但对于更深入、更批判性地分析医疗保健的发展方向来说,这本书就不那么好了。)”

Shark teeth were a passion of mine when I was young. I got to be pretty good at collecting them on our family vacations to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
I was going to put my hunting skills to use once again. My husband and I were spending a few days at a beach-side apartment with our grandson and their parents. One morning, my grandson and I decided to hit the sand before breakfast. I’d have the honor and privilege of taking my little man on his very first quest for shark teeth.
“This will be our treasure bag,” I pulled a sandwich baggie out of the box on the counter. “All the shark teeth we find will go in here.” My grandson slipped his hand into mine. The two of us hurried off with great expectations. My husband wished us luck. He knew that shark teeth could be hard to come by.
Out where the waves lapped gently at the shore, I put my head down and looked at the sand. “We’ll walk slowly and keep our eyes peeled for anything that is very shiny and very black,” I said. “I bet we’ll find a dozen teeth before breakfast.”
I pictured the excitement I’d see on Little Man’s face when he spotted one of the tiny teeth for himself. “Please let my grandson spot the first tooth of the morning.” I prayed in my heart.
Little Man scanned the sand as we walked. I pointed up ahead. “See that wavy strip where the ocean deposited all those little shells and pebbles (鹅卵石)?” My grandson nodded. “It’s the best place to look for shark teeth.”
Little Man squatted (蹲着) down by the debris (废弃物) and moved seaweed aside. Although we examined through the pebbles and shells underneath, we didn’t find any teeth.
“Oh, well,” I said, sighing. “Don’t worry, we’ll keep looking.” We continued up the beach, examining along the coast.

1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题纸的相应位置作答。
After a while, I started to worry.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Back to the apartment, Little Man spread out the shells and pebbles for the family to admire.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 After a while, I started to worry. The morning sun climbed higher, and the beach seemed to hold no secrets of shark teeth for us. My grandson’s small hands were getting dirty from digging and sorting through the sand, but his enthusiasm remained undiminished. We moved further down the beach, where the waves were a bit rougher, and the sand was looser. I knelt beside him, and together we sifted through the grains, praying for a glint of black to catch our eyes. Yet, despite our best efforts, the treasure bag remained empty.
Back to the apartment, Little Man spread out the shells and pebbles for the family to admire. His eyes sparkled with pride as he showed off his collection. His parents and my husband gathered around, oohing and aahing over his finds. In that moment, I realized that the true treasure wasn’t the shark teeth we hadn’t found, but the joy and wonder in my grandson’s heart. He had discovered the beauty of the beach in its simplest forms, and that was far more valuable than any shark tooth could ever be.

Roux who grew up spending her summers in Africa, had raised for computers to make STEAM education more accessible for girls.
C. The lack of electricity in Faith’s school. D. The benefit of STEAM education in Africa.
6. Why was the Malawi government’s education plan approved of?
A. To provide jobs for local workers. B. To bring down the cost of education.
C. To encourage innovation with the lab. D. To introduce more people to technology.
7. Which of the following words can best describe Roux?
A. Helpful and creative. B. Kind and humorous.
C. Diligent and enthusiastic. D. Brave and adventurous.

A 2019 study of 10 U.S. cities, for example, showed that white Americans have access to almost three times as many car-share locations and two times as many bike-share locations within a half-mile radius as African Americans.

13 Which of the following can replace the underlined word “caveats” in paragraph 3?
A. Secrets. B. Disadvantages. C. Expectations. D. Threats.
14. What is the author’s attitude towards Hacking Humanity?
A. Unfavourable. B. Optimistic. C. Objective. D. Unclear.
15. What is the text mainly about?
A. The future of wearable technology. B. A critical analysis of health tech.
C. The healthcare change led by AI. D. Medical innovations and limitations.

Although we examined through the pebbles and shells underneath we didn’t find any teeth.
“Oh, well,” I said, sighing. “Don’t worry, we’ll keep looking.” We continued up the beach, examining along the coast.
