Catherine Raven, a former biology professor with a profound love for nature, has gifted readers a touching memoir titled Fox and I: An Uncommon Friendship. Drawing on her academic background and personal experiences, Raven crafts a narrative that blends scientific insight with heartfelt emotion, making the book a standout in nature writing.
The story unfolds in a remote corner of Montana, where Raven lives alone in a small cabin she built herself. Her solitary life takes an unexpected turn when a wild fox begins visiting her every day at 4:15 p.m. What starts as a cautious encounter evolves into a deep bond — Raven even reads The Little Prince to the fox, creating a unique connection that transcends different species. Through this friendship, she reflects on themes of loneliness, companionship, and the inevitable losses that come with loving the natural world.
Critics have praised the book warmly. The New York Times calls it “a tender and insightful exploration of our relationship with nature,” highlighting Raven’s ability to blend observation with reflection. The Washington Post recommends it as a “must-read for summer,” noting its ability to remind readers of the beauty in quiet connections. A bestseller and winner of the PEN/E.O. Wilson Literary Science Writing Award, Fox and I is more than a memoir — it’s a celebration of the magic that happens when we open our hearts to the world around us.
Animal encounter books are common, and the good ones act like peaceful countryside escapes. Fox and I shares core similarities with Chloe Dalton’s Raising Hare and Helen Macdonald’s H Is for Hawk: all three explore profound, transformative bonds between humans and wild animals, using these relationships to delve into universal themes of grief, healing, and our place in the natural world. However, Fox and I stands apart in its quiet closeness with the fox and focus on “everyday magic” — unlike the intense, sometimes chaotic, violent journey in H Is for Hawk or the hands-on nurturing in Raising Hare, Raven’s story centers on a gentle, routine-driven connection that unfolds through small, consistent moments, offering a unique reflection on companionship without possession.
4. Why is Raven’s book Fox and I outstanding in nature writing?
A. It is written by a biology professor.
B. It combines science with emotion.
C. It is set in a remote corner of Montana.
D. It tells a story between human and nature.
5. What does the underlined word “transcend” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Deal with. B. Apply to.
C. Go beyond. D. Arise from.
6. According to paragraph 3, what can readers learn from the book Fox and I?
A. The book is well received by both critics and readers.
B. A bestseller should reveal the beauty in quiet connections.
C. Blending observation and reflection is vital for a biologist.
D. An open heart to the surroundings invites unexpected wonder.
7. Which of the following is an example of “everyday magic” in paragraph 4?
A. Amy feeds a homeless cat daily and makes friends with it.
B. Tom saved a badly-hurt bird in a forest and took it to the zoo.
C. Mary trains her dog every day and now it can do many tricks.
D. David captured a wild animal and successfully made it his pet.
B 5. C 6. D 7. A
根据第一段中“Drawing on her academic background and personal experiences, Raven crafts a narrative that blends scientific insight with heartfelt emotion, making the book a standout in nature writing. (凭借她的学术背景和个人经历,Raven创作了一个融合科学洞察力和真挚情感的叙述,使这本书在自然写作中脱颖而出。)”可知,Raven的这本书在自然写作中脱颖而出是因为它结合了科学与情感。故选B项。
【5题详解】
词句猜测题。根据画线词的上文“What starts as a cautious encounter evolves into a deep bond — Raven even reads The Little Prince to the fox (从最初的谨慎相遇逐渐发展为深厚的纽带——Raven甚至为狐狸朗读《小王子》)”可知,Raven与狐狸发展出深厚的纽带,这种纽带跨越了物种界限,超越常规关系,画线词意思与Go beyond“超越”相近。
根据第三段中“Fox and I is more than a memoir — it’s a celebration of the magic that happens when we open our hearts to the world around us (《狐狸和我》不仅仅是一本回忆录——它是对当我们向周围的世界敞开心扉时所发生的魔力的庆祝)”可知,读者能从这本书中学到对周围环境敞开心扉会带来意想不到的奇迹。
根据最后一段中“However, Fox and I stands apart in its quiet closeness with the fox and focus on “everyday magic” — unlike the intense, sometimes chaotic, violent journey in H Is for Hawk or the hands-on nurturing in Raising Hare, Raven’s story centers on a gentle, routine-driven connection that unfolds through small, consistent moments, offering a unique reflection on companionship without possession. 故选A项。
Gen Z is changing the rules of work, and the results are redefining what professional success looks like in 2025. According to a new Glassdoor report, “career minimalism” is at the heart of this shift.
In Glassdoor’s survey of more than 1,000 U. S. professionals, a striking 68% of Gen Zrespondents said they wouldn’t pursue management if it weren’t for paycheck or title, signaling a rejection of the traditional corporate climb favored by previous generations and a belief that management is something of a poisonous chalice (圣杯).
The survey, however, is somewhat at odds with other data collected by Glassdoor. Daniel Zhao, chief economist for the company, told Fortune that an earlier report had found Gen Zentering the ranks of management at the same rates as older generations did. “Management is not for everybody, and that’s okay,” he said, “but it is still seen as the best path for climbing the career ladder.”
What the new survey suggests is that management is now seen as a career-ladder move, not something good in its own right. Gen Z approaches life’s traditional milestones with “reasoned skepticism”. They are hungry for coaching and welcome in-office collaboration yet also desire the death of the nine-to-five mentality and embrace flexibility.
If Gen Z isn’t less ambitious yet isn’t thrilled about corporate management, where’s that energy going? The report cited Harris Poll findings that 57% of Gen Z currently have a side hustle (副业) compared to 48% of millennials and 31% of Gen Xers.
Side hustle s are central to Gen Z’s identity, offering creative or activist outlets that main jobs cannot supply. For many, the “day job” simply finances the “passion project” — as one Glassdoor community member put it: “I always joke that I don’t dream of labor… If people were truly passionate about their job, it wouldn’t pay anything. Passion is for your five-nine after the nine-five.”
When Gen Zers do move into management, Glassdoor finds that they’ re rewriting the traditional book. Gen Z is reconsidering what it means to be successful at work in this moment. They’ re not rejecting ambition — they’ re redirecting it toward sustainable career path s that prioritize both financial security and personal fulfillment.
8. Why is Daniel Zhao quoted in paragraph 3?
A. To draw attention to a new concept.
B. To confirm the accuracy of the report.
C. To raise awareness of a worrying trend.
D. To offer another perspective on the survey.
9. What might a typical Gen Zer do?
A. Make critical remarks. B. Leave work no later than 5.
C. Seek guidance from seniors. D. Avoid working with colleagues.
10. What factors may Gen Z consider in side hustles?
A. High pay and grand titles. B. Short hours and easy work.
C. Personal identity and flexibility. D. Benefits and working conditions.
11. What is the professional success defined by Gen Z?
A. Earning money with meaning.
B. Winning power through effort.
C. Dropping promotion for hobbies.
D. Staying put for financial security.
D 9. C 10. C 11. A
根据第二段中“In Glassdoor’s survey of more than 1,000 U. S. professionals, a striking 68% of Gen Zrespondents said they wouldn’t pursue management if it weren’t for paycheck or title, signaling a rejection of the traditional corporate climb favored by previous generations and a belief that management is something of a poisonous chalice (圣杯). ( 在对1000多名美国专业人员进行的一项Glassdoor调查中,高达68%的Gen Z受访者表示,如果不是为了薪水或头衔,他们不会追求管理职位,这表明他们拒绝了几代人所推崇的传统企业晋升道路,并相信管理职位有点像一个有毒的圣杯。)”以及第三段提到“The survey, however, is somewhat at odds with other data collected by Glassdoor. Daniel Zhao, chief economist for the company, told Fortune that an earlier report had found Gen Z entering the ranks of management at the same rates as older generations did. (然而,这项调查与Glassdoor收集的其他数据有些不一致。该公司首席经济学家Daniel Zhao告诉《财富》杂志,早先的一份报告发现,Z世代进入管理层的人数与年长一代的比例相同。)”,前文说新调查显示Z世代对管理职位的态度,这里Daniel Zhao的话给出了与新调查不同的早先报告的情况,也就是提供了关于该调查的另一个视角。故选D。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“They are hungry for coaching and welcome in-office collaboration (他们渴望得到指导,并欢迎办公室内的合作)”可知,典型的Z世代会寻求长辈的指导。
根据第六段“Side hustles are central to Gen Z’s identity, offering creative or activist outlets that main jobs cannot supply. For many, the “day job” simply finances the “passion project” — as one Glassdoor community member put it: “I always joke that I don’t dream of labor (副业对于 Z 世代而言至关重要,它们为他们提供了不同于本职工作、更具创意或更具参与性的表达方式。对许多人而言,“日常工作”仅仅是为了支撑起“热爱之事”所需的资金——正如一位 Glassdoor 社区成员所说:“我总是开玩笑说,我从未想过要从事一份工作……”)”可知,副业为Z世代人 提供了更具创意或更具参考性的表达方式,同时也提供了激情 ,因此Z世代在副业中考虑的因素有个人的身份认同和灵活性。故选C。
11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“They’re not rejecting ambition — they’re redirecting it toward sustainable career paths that prioritize both financial security and personal fulfillment. (他们并没有拒绝野心——他们正在将野心转向可持续的职业道路,这条道路既重视经济保障,也重视个人成就感。)”可知,Z世代定义的职业成功是既重视经济保障,也重视个人成就感即以有意义的方式赚钱。故选A。
One after another, injured koalas with burned paws and singed fur were carried into the rescue center. Suffering from severe dehydration and fear, they received urgent care from dedicated staff who bandaged their wounds, swaddled them gently, and placed them in baskets equipped with a familiar comfort: eucalyptus (桉树) leaves.
This heartbreaking scene became frequent as catastrophic wildfires, which have consumed millions of acres in Australia, forced the rescue of dozens of koalas from burning trees and ash-covered ground. The plight of the koala, an iconic Australian symbol, has raised serious concerns among conservationists and scientists. They are questioning how to protect biodiversity in a country already experiencing intense fires, extreme heat, and water shortage — a nation that already has one of the highest rates of species extinction in the world.
Although koalas have adapted to coexist with periodic wildfires, they now face threats on an unprecedented (史无前例的) scale. These challenges stem not only from climate change but also from extensive human development. The rise of urban areas and agriculture has split the koalas’ natural habitats, isolating populations and reducing their ability to survive disasters. In some regions, koala numbers have dropped by as much as 80%, though accurate counts across the vast continent remain difficult to obtain.
“The fires are a tragedy for our wildlife,” said Cheyne Flanagan, clinical director of the Koala Hospital, the only facility of its kind globally. “We have these unique animals that exist nowhere else on Earth, and we are failing to protect them. This should serve as a massive wake-up call for everyone.”
The situation underscores the urgent need for coordinated conservation efforts. It is clear that without significant intervention, the future of this beloved species remains uncertain. The loss of the koala would not only be an ecological disaster but also a cultural tragedy for Australia and the world.
12. What does the underlined word “plight” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Tough situation. B. Special habit. C. Cute appearance. D. Polluted environment.
13. Why are koalas now facing more serious threats than before?
A. The Australian government ignores their survival.
B. Climate change and human development bring risks.
C. Conservationists have no effective protection measures.
D. Their main food (eucalyptus. leaves) has sharply decreased.
14. What can we learn about the Koala Hospital from Cheyne Flanagan’s statement?
A. It is the world’s only koala-specialized medical facility.
B. It is facing great financial pressure in rescuing injured koalas.
C. It plans to expand its scale to better protect koalas in the future.
D. It has successfully saved most of the koalas injured in wildfires.
15. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Impact of Australian wildfires on biodiversity.
B. Rescue of injured koalas after Australian wildfires.
C. Koalas’ severe threats and urgent need for conservation.
D. The living habits of koalas and their dependence on eucalyptus leaves.
A 13. B 14. A 15. C
根据第二段“This heartbreaking scene became frequent as catastrophic wildfires, which have consumed millions of acres in Australia, forced the rescue of dozens of koalas from burning trees and ash-covered ground.(随着灾难性野火在澳大利亚肆虐数百万英亩土地,迫使救援人员从燃烧的树木和灰烬覆盖的地面救出数十只考拉,这般令人心碎的场景已屡见不鲜。)”和划线词所在句“The plight of the koala, an iconic Australian symbol, has raised serious concerns among conservationists and scientists.(考拉作为澳大利亚的标志性象征,其plight已引起环保人士和科学家的严重关切。)” 故选A。
根据第三段“These challenges stem not only from climate change but also from extensive human development.(这些挑战不仅源于气候变化,还源于大规模的人类发展活动。)”
根据第四段““The fires are a tragedy for our wildlife,” said Cheyne Flanagan, clinical director of the Koala Hospital, the only facility of its kind globally.(“火灾对我们的野生动物来说是一场悲剧,”考拉医院临床主任Cheyne Flanagan说,该医院是全球唯一的同类设施。)” 故选A。
根据第三段“Although koalas have adapted to coexist with periodic wildfires, they now face threats on an unprecedented (史无前例的) scale.(尽管考拉已经适应了与周期性的野火共存,但它们现在面临着前所未有的威胁。)”和最后一段“The situation underscores the urgent need for coordinated conservation efforts.(这一形势凸显了采取协调保护措施的急迫需要。)”、“The loss of the koala would not only be an ecological disaster but also a cultural tragedy for Australia and the world.(考拉的消失,不仅对澳大利亚乃至全世界是一场生态灾难,更将是一场文化悲剧。)”

How did you feel on the last day of term? Perhaps you were excited for an upcoming holiday, or grateful because morning lie-ins were now possible. Whatever you felt, you probably weren’t bored. However, as the weeks keep going, boredom may come close to you quietly. ____16____
Then what benefits can boredom bring? When you feel bored, your brain is simply struggling to find something that matters. If there’s nothing to be found, your mind will begin to “wander” or we can say “daydream”. Scientists have found that daydreaming gives your brain the space to solve problems and work through things that are on your mind. ____17____ You may come up with some wonderful ideas when daydreaming.
Sandi Mann, a senior psychology lecturer at the University of Central Lancashire, believes that a slower pace of life and learning to love boredom could not only lead to an explosion of people writing and painting masterpieces but also thinking about “creative solutions” to work problems. “Boredom is one of the most creative forces — there are benefits to doing nothing. Relieve yourself. ____18____ Embrace boredom and your mind will occupy itself,” she says. “You could end up painting or writing a masterpiece.”
____19____ Many people find boredom to be an uncomfortable feeling. That’s OK — with practice, you can learn to “sit with” that feeling and to use it to find fun and meaningful activities to do. ____20____ There’s a difference between feeling bored from time to time, which we all do, and feeling uninterested in things over a long period. If that happens, you can talk to a trusted adult for help, from whom you may get more advice.
A. In addition, don’t confuse boredom with other emotions.
B. Allow yourself to be bored and see it as something good.
C. It can also contribute to imagination, ideas and creativity.
D. Believe it or not, it actually can be good for you to be bored.
E. Learning how to accept and respond to boredom is important.
F. Gradually, you will embrace boredom and become interested in it.
G. Don’t turn on the TV or reach for a device at the first sign of boredom.
D 17. C 18. B 19. E 20. A
根据上文“However, as the weeks keep going, boredom may come close to you quietly. (然而,随着时间的推移,无聊可能会悄悄地接近你。)”以及下文“ Then, what benefits can boredom bring?(那么,无聊能带来什么好处呢?)”
根据上文“Scientists have found that daydreaming gives your brain the space to solve problems and work through things that are on your mind. (科学家们发现,做白日梦可以让你的大脑有空间解决问题,并处理你脑海中的事情。)”可知此处说的是做白日梦的好处。所以选项C“它还可以促进想象力、想法和创造力。”继续阐述做白日梦的积极作用,并且“It”指代上文的“ daydreaming”,符合语境。故选C。
【18题详解】
根据下文““Embrace boredom and your mind will occupy itself,” she says. “You could end up painting or writing a masterpiece.” (“接受无聊,你的大脑就会自娱自乐。”“你最终可以画出或写出一件杰作。”)”可知这里说的是接受无聊的好处。所以选项B“让自己感到无聊,把它看作是一件好事。”鼓励人们接受无聊,能够引出下文进一步阐述这样做的好处,符合题意。故选B。
【19题详解】
根据下文“Many people find boredom to be an uncomfortable feeling. That’s OK — with practice, you can learn to “sit with” that feeling and to use it to find fun and meaningful activities to do. (许多人觉得无聊是一种不舒服的感觉。没关系——通过练习,你可以学会“坐着”这种感觉,并利用它来找到有趣和有意义的活动。)”可知此处说的是应对无聊。所以选项E“学会如何接受和应对无聊很重要。”引出了后文关于如何接受无聊的内容,起到了总领下文的作用,符合语境。故选E。
【20题详解】
根据下文“There’s a difference between feeling bored from time to time, which we all do, and feeling uninterested in things over a long period. (我们都会时不时地感到无聊,和长时间对事物不感兴趣是有区别的。)”可知此处说的是不要把无聊和其他混为一谈。所以选项A“此外,不要把无聊和其他情绪混为一谈。”与下文内容相呼应,都是在强调要正确认识无聊这种情绪,不要与其他情绪混淆。故选A。

Grandma made a sweater for Dad as his birthday gift. It was PURPLE. Not just any purple. Shine-in-the-dark purple! Dad loved it. But I found it embarrassing.
He wore the sweater all the time: when he walked the dog, when he shopped for groceries, when he and Mom went on a date, and—worst of all—when he came to events at my school.
“Do you always have to wear that sweater?” I asked as we drove back from my school’s art show. He laughed. “It’s my favorite sweater, Jake!” “But it’s so ... purple!” I said.
I was glad when warm spring days arrived and he stopped wearing it. But once the weather cooled again, that purple sweater came out of hiding. I advised Dad to try other sweaters because the purple sweater looks like it’s from outer space. “That is half the reason I love it!” he said, smiling.
One day we visited Uncle Bill’s farm. When picking apples, Dad tore his sleeve (袖子) on a tree.
“Well, I guess you can’t wear the sweater anymore.” I said.
“It’s still a great sweater! I’ll just wear it around the house,” Dad said. And he did. Every night. Weekends too. The hole got bigger and bigger. The sleeve hung by threads (毛线).
One night, at dinner, the threads reached his plate of noodles. He turned around the noodles and threads onto his fork and opened his mouth. “Look out, Dad!” I shouted. “You’re about to eat your sweater.” Dad laughed and put his fork down. “It is impossible to save this sweater now,” he said and sighed.
After dinner, Dad was about to throw the sweater away. But he just stood there, looking sad. It made me sad too.
注意:
1.所续写短文的词数应为130左右;

A few days later, Dad came to the art show when the teacher gave out awards.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Suddenly a good idea hit me—using the sweater for the coming art show. “Wait, Dad! May I have the sweater?” I asked. “Why?” Dad asked in surprise. “You’ll see.” I washed, dried, and changed the sweater into a big pile of curly purple thread. I glued some of it onto a paper plate with some old green tennis balls. I tore and cut some color paper into pieces—pink, yellow, and orange—and glue the pieces into a bowl. I shaped a silver fork out of foil, then put everything on a serving tray with a sign: Noodles and Meatballs with Salad.
A few days later, Dad came to the art show when the teacher gave out awards. When I was announced to be a first prize-winner, I was surprised. Dad was surprised too. But having seen what I had made out of his sweater, he seemed to understand everything, with tears clouding his eyes. He wrapped me around his arms, saying gently, “Thank you, honey! It’s the perfect ending for my sweater.” Then we took some photos for memory. Later, I mailed one photo to Grandma with a note attached, telling her the legendary life of this purple sweater and how much Dad cherished it.

B Tom saved a badly-hurt bird in a forest and took it to the zoo.
C. Mary trains her dog every day and now it can do many tricks.
D. David captured a wild animal and successfully made it his pet.

How did you feel on the last day of term? Perhaps you were excited for an upcoming holiday, or grateful because morning lie-ins were now possible. Whatever you felt, you probably weren’t bored. However, as the weeks keep going, boredom may come close to you quietly. ____16____
Then, what benefits can boredom bring?
