(Text 1)
M:Look at those beautiful birds over there.I think you can teach them how to talk.
W:But look at the price.I'd rather have a cat.
(Text 2)
W:Max,do you want to see a photo of my new cat?
M:Sure.I thought you preferred birds!
W:I do,but this little guy just stole my heart. He's quite the character!
(Text 3)
M:Something's up with the dog. He's so quiet today, huh?
W:Yeah,I think he might have eaten something bad, maybe the fried chicken.I'm going to take him home to
relax and rest.
M:Alright, better stick to dog food next time.
(Text 4)
W:Henry,I heard you're going to eat at a Chinese friend's house this afternoon.
M:That's right.
W:Well, when you're eating there with chopsticks, remember not to beat your bowls with them because it's not
good to do that.
M:Thank you for telling me that,Michelle.
(Text 5)
W:So how was your time staying with the family in Victoria?
M:It went really well.I tried to help out with chores around the house and spend time with the family.
W:For what?
M:I wanted to understand their culture better.
(Text 6)
W:Oh,no,I don't have Amanda's phone number.
M:What's wrong,Miyako?
W:Amanda said we should get together again and that I should call her,but I don't have her phone number.
M:I see.Well,don't worry about it.For Americans,that's usually a friendly way to say goodbye.It's like
when Americans say "Hello, how are you?",but they don't want you to tell them how you are. It's just a
friendly greeting.
W:So saying"Let's get together sometime"is similar to that?
M:Yeah,that's right.
(Text 7)
M:So,Chang, how do you plan on keeping your Chinese traditions alive when you are in America?
W:Americans are very interested in Chinese culture. They watch Chinese films, eat Chinese food and admire
Chinese fashions.I think it will be easy for me to keep my culture alive there, simply by answering my
classmates'questions about China.
M:Since you are Chinese, you may face some cultural differences. How do you plan to deal with that?
W:Every place is different.I know that I may become upset while I am in a new place. It's important to
remember that I am a guest in that place, and I should respect the culture.
M:Do you expect that most of your friends are Americans,or will you try and make friends with other foreigners?
W:Well,I certainly won't know about that until I arrive in America.I expect that it might be easier to make
friends with other foreigners, because we will all be going through the culture shock.I would like to have
friends from everywhere.
(Text 8)
W:Hi,Jason. How was the first dinner with your host family?
M:It was great.But I really embarrassed myself.
W:Really?What happened?
【高一期末考试·英语参考答案第1页(共4页)】

M:I couldn't imagine I got the host's name wrong.When I got there,he introduced his family.But at the end
of the dinner,I said"Thank you for your invitation,Wilson"Then someone whispered "His name is James,
not Wilson.”
W:Oh,that's terrible. How did you deal with it?
M:I even forgot to make an apology.I just made a joke of myself.
W:It's better than saying nothing,right?
M:Yes,but can you tell me some table manners?I hope I can get used to the life here as soon as possible.
W:Don't worry.I can help you.
(Text9)
W:Victor, you've been here in Indiana for six weeks now.How are you feeling?
M:I think I've got used to college life, going to classes, working out and hanging out with my friends.Though
there's pressure to meet deadlines, life here is never boring.
W:What's been hard about being an Indiana basketball player?
M:Well, the training is very competitive-weightlifting and running every day. It's not like high school. In
high school,I really didn't have to do that.I'm just trying to get used to it.And I think I am.
W:At this point, how do you see yourself fitting into this group?
M:I think we are all different.George is from Britain.Chris and Leo are from Australia.I'm from France. And
the rest are Americans. But I get along with everybody. You know,we are really starting to bond. It's
great to see how we grow each day as a team.
W:Thanks,Victor.I wish you a very happy and fruitful stay in Indiana.
(Text 10)
M:In the west, people hug for many different reasons.Family and friends sometimes hug just to show the other
person they care. They may hug a loved one that they haven't seen for a while,or hug someone who will be
leaving for a long period of time.Hugs are also given to comfort someone who is sad or to congratulate
someone who has good news.Hug reduces tension and raises self-confidence.Scientists even found that
hugging can have a positive effect on a person's IQ.
Some Chinese friends think all westerners love to hug.But some western cultures encourage hugging more
than others. The French, for example, are some of the most affectionate people in the world.Researchers
have observed that the French touch each other more than 100 times during a 30-minute conversation.
American, however, typically only touch each other twice during the same time period.Italians and Greeks
are known for giving lots of hugs. But British people, like Americans, tend to be a little more reserved
about hugging.

Celebrating both Hanukkah and Christmas gives my children the chance to enjoy double
presents-often more than they can actually use or appreciate. What gets lost this time of
year,I often feel, especially while rushing around or spending hours online to buy gifts,is the
importance of giving back.
Last year,to balance receiving with giving, our two daughters each chose a charity, and
our family made a donation().This year,I plan to do the same over the holidays.
In conversations with other parents,I've learned that the best way to teach our children
to think of others and want to give back during the holidays is to do that work throughout the
year.As parenting coach Vicki Hoefle explains,"If we give our kids all year long, they may
struggle to change their mindset and think about giving back during the holidays."
Danielle Le Roy,a mom from Chicago, shared how she and her husband have been mindful of
this balance since their children were born.Instead of giving gifts to each other, they put
together a small basket of gifts for those who provided the family a service throughout the
year, such as mail carriers and deliverymen.
Hoefle,a mom of five, says small actions, like teaching children how to help their community,
are key to fostering()a generous spirit.Parents should look for opportunities to get their
children involved:Is the child interested in animals?Excited about performing in front of
elderly people or reading to them?

Q
Sorry, exercise addicts一all those intense(剧烈的)workouts might not be helping you
lose as much weight as you thought.People who are the most physically active seem to
become more efficient(at using energy, according to a recent study.
"This isn't an argument for not exercising,"says David Stensel,a professor who studies
exercise at Loughborough University in the UK."Exercise is still good for you in a host of other
ways. But it helps us understand why not everyone gets the weight loss they expect with exercise."
In the study, researchers used wearable tracking devices to measure the activity levels of
332 people with a wide range of lifestyles. They also measured how much energy people used
each day by having them drink special water that can be traced. As expected, those who were
moderately active burned more energy than those who were inactive. However, those who
were the most active burned the same amount of calories as those who were moderately active.
This suggests that someone who already walks to work and runs a bit may not burn more
calories by doing longer runs, says Herman Pontzer, one of the authors of the study.Pontzer
explains that we might adjust to exercise in two ways. One is that we start moving around
less. The other is lowering our resting metabolic rate()by cutting energy use in a range of
bodily functions.
Earlier studies that suggested exercise increases people's resting metabolic rate may have
been wrong by testing people too soon after exercise, when their metabolism had not fully settled.
"Even though gym machines show how many calories you burn during a workout, active
people make up for it by burning fewer calories during the rest of the day, says Pontzer,
pointing out that even with intense exercise, most of the calories burned during the day come

Some 500 years ago, beavers were hunted for their fur and meat, and disappeared from
Britain. Now they are making a comeback-at least in small pockets in Scotland-and that
may be good news for flood protection and the restoration()of wetlands, though farmers
remain worried that beaver dams()will harm their crops and grasslands.
It seems that beaver dams might help prevent flooding, cleanse water, and benefit fish
populations and wetland ecosystems."When it rains, more water gets stored in pools behind
the dams,and when it's drier,water is gently released()to keep rivers flowing,"says
Richard Brazier,a professor at the University of Exeter.
Four years ago,two beavers were released in an area that was just a small river flowing
through deserted woodland.Within a couple of years, they'd transformed the river into a
rich, wetland habitat."They've built 13 dams and had a good effect on how the water flows
through the site,"says Brazier. This is the kind of measure that some experts believe would
have reduced the impact of the floods in Scotland.
In addition to flood control, beavers may help fish populations.Studies by Paul Kemp of
the University of Southampton show that fish populations in rivers with beavers are larger and
healthier. The beaver pools provide deep water that fish prefer.
However,beavers don't always have a positive impact.In Scotland,where there are 50
to 200 beavers along the River Tay,beaver dams sometimes block drainage ditches(
and create flood risks in farming areas.Beavers also bite trees beside a busy road, and make
holes in anti-flood embankments.
期
So what do these varied impacts mean for reintroducing beavers in Scotland?
A report by Scottish Natural Heritage presents several options, including removing all
beavers or allowing their uncontrolled reintroduction. The Environment Agency is also closely
monitoring the situation to decide whether the benefits of reintroducing beavers outweigh the risks.
32.Why do farmers feel worried about beaver dams?
:
A.They will reduce water storage.
B.They will pollute drinking water.
C.They will destroy farming land.
D.They will increase fish populations.
33.What is Brazier's attitude to the reintroduction of beavers?
A.Positive.
B.Doubtful.
C.Unclear.
D.Uncaring.
34.What is paragraph 5 mainly about?
A.The latest research into beavers.
B.The negative effects of beavers.
C.The benefits of beavers on flood control.
D.The influence of beavers on local plants.
