For more than ten years, I was a screen and TV writer, navigating the shark-filled waters of Hollywood. Despite the constant and unavoidable ups and downs of this life, I realized many of my dreams including working with stars like Lucas and writing an Emmy-winning TV show. Then, my life took an unexpected turn. In 2011, I agreed to teach a class. I discovered a deep love for it — the engagement with students and the stable income were welcome changes.
As my writing career slowed, my wife encouraged me to pursue more teaching. I researched and found a position at UC Riverside. I said “Yes” to the interview, got the job, and within years became a professor. Academy became my focus, but I remained a writer at heart. I decided to write my first novel, free from deadlines, simply for the creative joy.
In 2015, an email asked if I was interested in a talk in the community. I said “Yes”. The challenge was big; a 15-minute speech in front of 500 people and three cameras. However, I succeeded, and the talk was well-received. After the speech was uploaded to the internet, it led to an email from Publisher, suggesting a book on my talk’s topic. I instead recommended my novel. They asked if I wanted to launch a pre-sale campaign to attract readers. I said “Yes”.
Publisher’s founder advised me to find an editor. Again, I said “Yes”. I hired Lauren Hughes, whose insightful feedback was incredibly encouraging. I accepted her notes and revised the manuscript. The pre-sale campaign sold over 300 books, generating interest from many readers. So my first novel was published.
All this happened because I consistently said “Yes” to new opportunities, embracing challenges without knowing the outcome. This philosophy keeps me engaged against the pull of aging. As a professor, I urge students to be positive. I don’t know how my novel will be received, but when asked if I have a book out, I can proudly say “Yes”.
4. What did the author think of his work in Hollywood?
A. It was steady and well-paid. B. It was tiring and disappointing.
C. It was fruitful despite challenges. D. It was full of unbearable pressure.
5. Which word can best describe the pre-sale campaign?
A. Unexpected. B. Nationwide. C. Demanding. D. Successful.
6. What can we know about the author?
A. He has always lived in a state of instability.
B. He faces the unknown and challenges bravely.
C. He accepted teaching mainly for its high income.
D. He viewed public speaking as an unavoidable duty.
7. What is the best title for the text?
A. The Power of Saying “Yes”. B. A New Chapter in My Life.
C. From Hollywood to Classroom. D. The Path to Becoming an Author.
C 5. D 6. B 7. A

Will your job be done by a robot in the future? Bank of England economists predict that almost half of all UK jobs are under threat of automation. But could even the respected profession of teaching soon have to compete against powerful electronic educators?
At first glance, teachers might seem to be not easily replaced by robots. Teachers use a range of soft skills that machines find hard to copy. They assess pupils’ needs and tailor feedback accordingly. They adapt materials to make them more engaging (吸引人的) and effective.
Nonetheless, some believe the future of education will be technological. In an interview with Business Insider magazine, futurist Thomas Frey predicts that the largest company on the Internet is going to be an education-based company that we haven’t heard of yet.
He thinks that online robot teachers will make education so efficient that students will be able to compress (压缩) an entire undergraduate degree into six months of learning. A robot learns what your personal habits, interests, and reference points are, and it figures out how to teach you in a better way over time.
Whether such incredible speeds will be reached, over the last decade there has been a huge increase in online learning platforms. Companies such as Udemy and Khan Academy produce courses that allow millions to learn at home for free, at their own pace. But there are limitations. Without the face-to-face stimulation of a classroom environment, the vast majority of students fail to complete online courses. How to sustain motivation to learn is one more skill that online teachers will need to master.
Indeed, Frey admits there is some way to go, “Nobody has fully solved the questions of the future of education.” What do teachers themselves think about this? Professor Donald Clark from Derby University in the UK thinks that we should accept change, even though people will lose their jobs. “Artificial intelligence will destroy jobs — so why not use it for a social good such as learning?” he asked.
8. What does the underlined word “tailor” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Simplify. B. Judge. C. Collect. D. Adjust.
9. What does Thomas Frey predict about education?
A. It will be dominated by robots. B. It will require more classroom time.
C. It will be limited to online learning. D. It will be led by an unknown company.
10. What might be a challenge for online teachers?
A. Sustaining learning engagement. B. Managing students’ behavior.
C. Adapting to new technology. D. Developing new courses.
11. What is Professor Donald Clark’s view on AI in education?
A. It should be avoided. B. It is a threat to teachers.
C. It should be embraced. D. It offers economic benefits.
D 9. D 10. A 11. C

In a Tokyo workshop, 72-year-old potter Hiroshi Tanaka sits bent over a spinning wheel, his hands shaping a lump of clay (粘土) into a teacup. Outside, young people line up, phones in hand, waiting to take photos of the process. This scene, once rare, is now common across Asia and Europe: traditional crafts — pottery, weaving, hand-dyed textiles — are enjoying a surprising revival, even as digital tools control daily life.
Why are people drawn to these slow, labor-intensive practices? Psychologists point to “digital fatigue”: the constant flow of emails, messages, and social media updates leaves many people desiring activities that demand focus. Unlike scrolling through a screen, crafting requires patience. A single ceramic bowl might take days to mold, fire, and glaze. “It’s the opposite of instant satisfaction,” says London-based craft historian Elena Ruiz. “That’s exactly its appeal.”
This revival isn’t just about nostalgia (怀旧). Modern craftsmen are combining old techniques with new ideas. In Florence, Italy, a third-generation weaver uses 17th-century weaving machines to create fabrics for luxury brands, but adds patterns inspired by street art. In Seoul, a paper-maker integrates recycled coffee grounds into traditional hanji paper, making it both eco-friendly and trendy. These innovations keep crafts relevant, attracting younger consumers who value uniqueness over mass production.
Critics argue that the trend risks turning crafts into mere “artistic products”. They worry that workshops become photo spots rather than places of learning, and that the pressure to create “Instagram-worthy” pieces weakens the depth of traditional skills. Yet supporters argue that any attention is good. “If a teenager buys a hand-woven scarf because it looks cool online, they might later ask about how it was made,” notes Ruiz. “Interest is the first step toward preservation.”
For Tanaka, the newfound popularity is a chance to pass on his knowledge. “My father thought pottery would die with machines,” he says, wiping clay from his apron. “But young people now want to learn. They see it’s not just about making things — it’s about making meaning.”
12. Why does the author mention “digital fatigue” in Paragraph 2?
A. To criticize the overuse of digital tools in daily life.
B. To stress people are less interested in social media.
C. To explain why people desire focus-requiring activities.
D. To prove crafts require more patience than digital activities.
13. What do examples in Paragraph 3 show?
A. Innovation is more important than tradition.
B. Traditional crafts can adapt to modern tastes.
C. Young consumers prefer eco-friendly products.
D. Luxury brands depend on traditional techniques.
14. Which following statement would both critics and supporters most likely agree on?
A. Traditional crafts possess values that need to be preserved.
B. Innovation is in conflict with maintaining traditional skills.
C. Young consumers alone will determine the future of craftsmanship.
D. Digital exposure unavoidable harms the uniqueness of traditional crafts.
15. What’s the main idea of the passage?
A. Young people are responsible for preserving traditional skills.
B. Traditional crafts are replacing digital products in modern life.
C. Modern innovations are ruining the authenticity of traditional crafts.
D. The revival of traditional crafts reflects a desire for meaning in a digital world.
C 13. B 14. A 15. D

根据第二段中“Why are people drawn to these slow, labor-intensive practices? Psychologists point to “digital fatigue”: the constant flow of emails, messages, and social media updates leaves many people desiring activities that demand focus. Unlike scrolling through a screen, crafting requires patience. (为什么人们会被这些缓慢、耗费体力的做法所吸引?心理学家指出了“数字疲劳”这一原因:源源不断的电子邮件、信息和社交媒体更新让许多人渴望需要集中注意力的活动。与滑动屏幕不同,手工制作需要耐心)”可知,作者提到“数字疲劳”是为了解释为什么人们渴望需要专注的活动。故选C项。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“This revival isn’t just about nostalgia (怀旧的).
根据倒数第二段“Critics argue that the trend risks turning crafts into mere “artistic products”. “Interest is the first step toward preservation.” 故选A项。
通读全文,结合第一段中“This scene, once rare, is now common across Asia and Europe: traditional crafts — pottery, weaving, hand-dyed textiles — are enjoying a surprising revival, even as digital tools control daily life.
When it comes to being fit and healthy, most of us know by now that 10,000 steps is recommended everywhere as a target to achieve. ___16___ The 10,000 steps a day target seems to have come about from a trade name pedometer (计步器) sold in 1965 by Yamasa Clock in Japan. The device was called “Manpo-kei”, which translates to “10,000 steps meter”. This was a marketing tool for the device and has seemed to have stuck across the world as the daily step target. ___17___
But while some research has shown health benefits at 10,000 steps, recent research from Harvard Medical School has shown that, on average, approximately 4,400 steps a day is enough to significantly lower the risk of death in women. This was when compared to only walking around 2,700 steps daily. The more steps people walked, the lower their risk of dying was, before leveling off at around 7,500 steps a day. ___18___ Although it’s uncertain whether similar results would be seen in men, it’s one example of how moving a little bit more daily can improve health and lower risk of death.
___19___ One easy way to do that is to increase your current step count by about 2,000 steps a day. Other easy ways to move more daily include walking to work if possible, or taking part of an online exercise program if you’re working from home. ___20___ And given that even small amounts of physical activity positively impact your health, taking regular breaks to move around if you’re working at a desk all day will help to easily get more physical activity.
A. No additional benefits were seen with more steps.
B. Is walking 10,000 steps every day really necessary?
C. But do you know where this number actually came from?
D. There are several ways to increase steps or simply move more.
E. It’s even included in daily activity targets by popular smart watches.
F. The ways to improve our health lie in many aspects such as exercising more.
G. Meeting with friends for a walk rather than in a cafe or pub can also be useful.
C 17. E 18. A 19. D 20. G
前文“When it comes to being fit and healthy, most of us know by now that 10,000 steps is recommended everywhere as a target to achieve. (说到健美和健康,我们大多数人现在都知道,一万步是到处推荐的目标)”提到走一万步维持健康的目标,后文“The 10,000 steps a day target seems to have come about from a trade name pedometer (计步器) sold in 1965 by Yamasa Clock in Japan. (每天走一万步的目标似乎源自1965年日本Yamasa钟表公司推出的一款计步器的商品名)”说明这一目标的来源,因此C项“But do you know where this number actually came from? (但是你知道这个数字实际上来自哪里吗)”符合语境,提出数字来源的问题,和前文构成转折,引出后文的回答,其中的this number指代前文提到的10,000。故选C。
【17题详解】
前文“This was a marketing tool for the device and has seemed to have stuck across the world as the daily step target. (这是该设备的一种营销工具,似乎已经成为全球各地的日常步数目标)”提到走一万步作为日常步数目标流行起来,因此E项“It’s even included in daily activity targets by popular smart watches. (它甚至被流行的智能手表纳入日常活动目标)”符合语境,进一步说明了这个目标的流行情况,承接前文。故选E。
【18题详解】
前文“The more steps people walked, the lower their risk of dying was, before leveling off at around 7,500 steps a day. (人们走的步数越多,死亡的风险就越低,之后会稳定在每天7500步左右)”指出每天约7500步时风险降低趋势趋于平稳,因此A项“No additional benefits were seen with more steps. (再多走步数也没有看到额外的好处)”符合语境,说明更多的步数不会增益,承接前文。故选A。
后文“One easy way to do that is to increase your current step count by about 2,000 steps a day. Other easy ways to move more daily include walking to work if possible, or taking part of an online exercise program if you’re working from home. (一个简单的方法就是每天增加2000步的步数。其他简单的每天多运动的方法包括走路去上班,如果可能的话,或者如果你在家工作,参加一个在线锻炼项目)”介绍各种增加日常活动量的具体方法,因此D项“There are several ways to increase steps or simply move more. (有几种增加步数或更多活动的方法)”符合语境,总的指出增加步数有方法可循,统领后文,适合作为段首句。故选D。
【20题详解】
“One easy way to do that is to increase your current step count by about 2,000 steps a day. Other easy ways to move more daily include walking to work if possible, or taking part of an online exercise program if you’re working from home. (一个简单的方法就是每天增加2000步的步数。其他简单的每天多运动的方法包括走路去上班,如果可能的话,或者如果你在家工作,参加一个在线锻炼项目)”介绍各种增加日常活动量的具体方法,因此G项“Meeting with friends for a walk rather than in a cafe or pub can also be useful. (和朋友见面去散步而不是在咖啡馆或酒吧也会很有用)”符合语境,继续说明增加活动量的途径,和前文是并列关系。故选G。

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Every student at Oakridge High knew that Michael was struggling. His family had recently moved to a smaller apartment across town after his father was laid off from work. The financial pressures at home cast a shadow over everything he did.
Each morning, he arrived at Oakridge High wearing the same faded jeans and worn-out sneakers. Where he once participated eagerly in class discussions, he now sat in the back row, hoping to escape notice. He found himself staring blankly at the whiteboard, unable to focus. The numbers blurred together as worries about his family’s situation crowded his mind.
Mr. Evans, a teacher with twenty years of experience, recognized the signs immediately. After class, he asked Michael to stay for a moment. “I know you’re going through a difficult time,” Mr. Evans said, his voice filled with genuine concern. “But remember this: difficult roads often lead to beautiful destinations. The struggle you’re facing today is developing the strength you need for tomorrow.” He placed a reassuring hand on Michael’s shoulder. “This temporary setback doesn’t define you — it’s preparing you. I’ve seen your potential, and I believe in you even when you might not believe in yourself.”
Their after-school sessions became regular. He taught Michael how to break down complex problems into manageable steps — a strategy that applied not just to mathematics but to life’s challenges as well. Most importantly, he consistently emphasized Michael’s capabilities, rebuilding the confidence that had been eroded (侵蚀) by recent difficulties.
As weeks passed, Michael’s performance began to improve dramatically. He started arriving early for their sessions, often with questions prepared in advance. The frustration that once clouded his expression was replaced by determination. In class, he began raising his hand again, offering solutions to problems that challenged other students.
注意:
1.写作词数应为150个左右;

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
The true test came with the annual mathematics competition. The mathematics competition was intense, with the brightest students from across the district competing. Michael focused intently, recalling Mr. Evans’s strategies as he solved each problem. When the results were announced, he felt a surge of disbelief and joy upon hearing his name called for second place. Walking to the stage to receive his certificate, he saw Mr. Evans applauding proudly in the audience, giving him a thumbs-up. That moment of recognition meant more to Michael than the award itself.
After the award presentation, Michael went to Mr. Evans’s office. He found Mr. Evans was buried in grading students’ assignments. He approached his teacher, holding the certificate with visible emotion. “Thank you for everything, sir,” Michael said sincerely. Mr. Evans responded with a warm smile, placing a hand on his shoulder. “You earned this through your own determination,” he replied quietly. “Remember that challenges are merely opportunities in disguise.” The brief exchange conveyed profound gratitude and pride, capturing the essence of their special student-teacher bond.

4 What did the author think of his work in Hollywood?
A. It was steady and well-paid. B. It was tiring and disappointing.
C. It was fruitful despite challenges. D. It was full of unbearable pressure.
5. Which word can best describe the pre-sale campaign?
A. Unexpected. B. Nationwide. C. Demanding. D. Successful.
6 What can we know about the author?

This revival isn’t just about nostalgia (怀旧的).
They worry that workshops become photo spots rather than places of learning and that the pressure to create “Instagram-worthy” pieces weakens the depth of traditional skills.

Class 1, Senior 3
