Ruby Tucker dances around a heavy bag hanging from a chain(链子) inside Zilla Boxing Club in New Jersey. Each punch goes together with the sounds of the 9-year-old’s breathing(呼吸) and sounds of gloves hitting the bag and chain. With lightning speed, she throws a set of punches, including the uppercut and the hook — her favorites. "Because they’re the strongest punches," she says, "and the best ones to knock a person down." They allow her to move fast, with confidence.
"Nice job, baby," says her father, coach and trainer, Kijuan Tucker, owner of Zilla Boxing Club for the youth. When Tucker first introduced his daughter to boxing, it was all about teaching her self-defense. Ruby, however, was a born boxer and took to the sport immediately. She developed a passion for boxing at a young age. "You can’t always be with your kids, and I feel like she will be able to protect herself if needed," Tucker said.
The confidence she’s gained from the sport also inspired Tucker to open Zilla Boxing Club so that other children could learn to defend themselves. "Boxing really helps with confidence. We don’t expect
everyone to become a world champion, but that confidence developed through training and discipline(训导) is amazing," Tucker said. "To me, the main thing I look for right now is a confidence builder more than anything else. It’s a quality that any champion needs."
"What I want people to know about boxing is that it is not always about winning," Ruby said. "It is about giving your effort and giving your all, and then that matters when you have a win under your belt. It doesn’t matter if you don’t work and just win."
1.How does the author start the text?( )
A.By talking about the boxing rules.
B.By introducing a fierce boxing match.
C.By describing a scene of boxing training.

A.Helping kids become the most powerful.
B.Helping kids become confident in themselves.
C.Training the youth to become the most skillful.
D.Training the youth to become world champions.
4.What did Ruby want others to learn from boxing?( )
A.Victory and hardship go hand in hand.
B.Success matters after you try your best.
C.Neither success nor failure is ever final.
D.Failure comes when you refuse to work hard.

Americans are faced with an "epidemic of loneliness", according to dozens of researchers. But
according to a pair of new surveys, American loneliness is more complex than that. The typical American, it seems, texts a group of people "We should get together!" before playing with their phone alone on the couch and then passing out. That is, Americans have friends. We just never really see them.
In a study, Natalie Pennington, an assistant professor of Communication Studies at Colorado State University, and her co-authors surveyed nearly 6,000 American adults about their friendships. They found that Americans reported having an average of about four or five friends, which is similar to past estimates. Very few respondents(调查对象) — less than 4 percent — reported having no friends.
Although most of the respondents were satisfied with the number of friends they had, more than 40 percent felt they were not as emotionally close to their friends as they’d like to be, and a similar number wished they had had more time to spend with their friends. Americans feel "that longing there", as Pennington put it — "a struggle to figure out how to communicate and connect and make time for" friendship.
This difficulty arises, in part, from a shortage of free time. In 2021, older millennials(千禧一代) — a group that’s likely to have young kids — had 16 fewer minutes of leisure time each day than similarly
aged adults did in 2003, according to contributor Justin Fox. They’ve given those minutes to sleep, work, and child care.
Because modern friendship requires so many active schedules of individual friend dates, people with more resources are now better able to maintain friendships than disadvantaged people. A survey of 6,500 American adults found that college-educated Americans were more likely to host a dinner for friends and neighbors at their home at least once a month than those with a high-school degree.
1.What does an "epidemic of loneliness" in paragraph 1 refer to?( )
A.Fear of being alone.
B.The trend of feeling lonely.
C.Preference for being alone.
D.Physical problems caused by loneliness.
2.What do paragraphs 2-3 mainly talk about?( )
A.People’s choice about their friends.
B.Doubt about American adults’ friendships.
C.Differences among various kinds of friendships.
D.The current situation of American adults’ friendships.
3.According to the last two paragraphs, what can we conclude?( )
A.Older millennials have the fewest friends in life.
B.Adults usually have high expectations of their friends.
C.People with higher education tend to see their friends more.
D.New parents should spend less time on child care to get more friends.
4.Which is the best title for the text?( )
A.The Wonder of Friendship B.The Friendship Problem
C.A Longing for Friendship D.A Friendship Surprise

Save the gorilla! Protect tigers! Help the giant kangaroo rats! You’ve probably heard the first two slogans but maybe not the last one. We’re often interested in supporting the protection of animals like gorillas and tigers but less concerned for creatures like rats. Are our stereotypes (刻板印象) affecting which animals we choose to protect?
Researchers have studied how people view animals on the basis of two qualities: warmth (how friendly we think they are) and competence (how capable they seem). Animals we see as companions(同伴), such as dogs and monkeys, score high in both warmth and competence. This makes us eager to protect them. Predators like tigers and bears are seen as competent but not very warm. While some people admire these animals, others may fear or hunt them. Animals viewed as prey, like cows and rabbits, often receive less attention, but people are prepared to actively harm those considered pests, such as rats and mice.
However, this might not be the full story. National Geographic Magazine asked their readers which animals were the most important to save. Four of the top five fit the companion or predator type — elephants, tigers, whales and polar bears. But the most popular animal to save was the bee. It seems that besides concerns around warmth and competence, people are aware how species can affect the wider ecosystem and value bees as pollinators (传粉者).
At present, 27,000 species are becoming extinct every year. How do zoos and protection projects decide which animals to support? One factor is the importance of an animal to the wider ecosystem, but this can lead to some difficult choices. It’s reported that in Australia, koalas are much less important to the ecosystem than some lesser-known animals such as woylies. However, they also suggest a solution to this issue. To protect cute animals, such as koalas, it’s important to protect their entire habitat — and this can save a wide variety of species. It could be that many animals can be sheltered by koalas’ cuteness.
1.What’s the focus of the research?( )
A.What qualities different animal species have.
B.How human views affect animal protection efforts.
C.What characteristics affect public interest in species.
D.How human activities influence wildlife numbers.
2.What do we know about animals from paragraph 2?( )
A.Predators are always hunted.
B.Prey animals get a lot of attention.
C.Friendly animals are more protected.
D.Animal companions are more capable than others.
3.Why do people value bees most according to the text?( )
A.Their economic benefits. B.Their role in ecosystems.
C.Their symbolic meaning. D.Their companion-like nature.
4.What’s the purpose of mentioning koalas in the last paragraph?( )
A.To introduce a new conservation method.
B.To emphasize the popularity of certain pretty animals.
C.To offer suggestions on effectively protecting koalas.
D.To stress the difficulty of making protection decisions.

Whenever we are planning to buy something online, most of us prefer to look at the reviews first. We imagine that they have been left by shoppers like us who want to share their knowledge with others, so the reviews would be of great value to us. 1.___ Some of them are writing positive reviews in return for a payment or gifts from the maker. How do we know this?
A careful study of thousands of reviews on a popular shopping website showed that a surprisingly large number of reviewers gave either four- or five-star ratings to products. Two- or three-star ratings both accounted for less than ten percent of the total, which looked suspicious (可疑的). 2.___ Not everything being sold on the shopping website could be first-class! We all know that some false information is provided. Some products that you buy on a shopping website can be terrible. You would therefore expect to see a variety of scores. 3.___
It seems that anyone who writes a large number of good reviews is given a special treat by the shopping website. 4.___ How should a shopper reply to all these "wonderful" reviews? The best thing to do is to visit a website run by some organizations such as Which? in the UK. The product evaluation(评估) of Which? is based on strict tests carried out by experts and then on reviews by trusted shoppers who are members. They are not allowed to take free gifts from makers.5.___ So, a good and responsible organization seems to be the best answer.
A. So why are most reviews positive?
B. Reviews differ from person to person.
C. However, not all reviewers are like this.
D. So how can we tell true reviews from false ones?
E. These "top" reviewers are then given free products.
F. Shoppers need protection from misleading reviews.
G. If those reviews were true, a broader spread of ratings would be given.

Hannah and I have been best friends since primary school and we spend almost every day with each other. Sometimes, other children say we are boring because we are both very academic and like to study, but we like it that way. We learn from each other, inspire each other and both get good grades at school.
Last Monday, our math teacher Miss Smith gave us a surprise math quiz(小测验). Some of my classmates felt worried and nervous but Hannah and I were confident and gave each other an encouraging smile before we got down to doing the quiz. After the quiz while others were
complaining about the "surprise" and expressing their concern about the result, I laughed loudly, "It’s so easy! I’m sure to get a good grade!" Ironically (具有讽刺意味的是), on Tuesday afternoon, Miss Smith told
me after class that I had the lowest grade in the class. I couldn’t believe my ears. What a shame! How could I be so stupid to fail such a simple math quiz?
Afterwards, I tried my best to hide my upset and pretended to be cheerful, but Hannah sensed something was wrong. When we went to wash our hands in the girls’ washroom, she looked into my eyes and asked, "What happened, Sarah?" With tears welling up, I admitted how badly I had done. "Hannah, please don’t tell anyone else," I begged in a choked voice. She hugged me, saying she would keep my secret.
However, the next morning, I noticed that some classmates were staring at me strangely and others whispering and chuckling (暗笑) as I came into the classroom. When I went to sit down, I was shocked to find a piece of paper on my desk that said, "Stupid Sarah got a D!" A flush of shame and anger overwhelming me, I felt my face was burning. I thought that Hannah must have told my classmates about my grade after promising not to. Everyone must have been laughing behind my back!

I was so angry that I went straight to Hannah._______________________________________________
