B When I got my first research project to work, I was so excited.Seeing research in action was enjoyable. My excitement, though, was soon cut short when my professor asked me to write a research paper on the project. My body tensed. Writing was the last thing I wanted to do; it’s one reason why I pursued science in the first place. I had hated writing since I was a little boy. But I couldn’t avoid it: writing classes were required in high school. For hours I stared at blank pages, trying to turn my disorganised thoughts into fluent sentences. My teachers would return my papers littered with red, showing my paragraphs were out of order. I was frustrated to no end. How could I know what was good if there was no objectively right answer? Maybe I wasn’t cut out for writing. I studied engineering in college. A few years later, I joined a research lab. The professor assigned me an initial project to improve the efficiency of an inductor I spent weeks setting up a test for a new design. When I got the results, though, the numbers weren’t good. I kept trying new designs, using the results to brainstorm ideas with a team of researchers. Finally, after dozens of designs, we had one that could work. I was overjoyed — until my professor told me to write that research paper. In panic, I asked a graduate student in my lab for help. I carefully wrote an outline. But when I asked him for feedback, I soon found the paper full of red marks. Before I could quit in defeat, though, the graduate student explained, “Red doesn’t mean you’re a bad writer. Writing isn’t a one-and-done thing. It requires revising your work, often several times.” Suddenly it occurred to me, “Hadn’t I done the same thing when I was designing my research project?” I kept improving my outline, eventually turning it into sentences and paragraphs, guided by feedback from others. Finally, I made it, and surprisingly, I was having fun. From then on, writing became one of my favourite parts of research, and it still is today. It’s a future I never could have imagined during my early struggles with writing classes. But I came around. 4. What was the author’s initial reaction when asked to write a research paper? A He felt excited and motivated. B. He was nervous and reluctant. C. He decided to change his research topic. D. He immediately sought help from classmates. 5. What do we know about the author’s final research design from paragraph 3? A. It’s hard-earned. B. It’s well-known. C. It’s poorly-made. D. It’s independently-finished. 6. Which of the following word can replace the underlined phrase “cut out”? A. Grateful. B. Born. C. Responsible. D. Famous. 7. What did the author learn from the graduate student’s words? A. A good beginning is half done. B. Actions speak louder than words. C. A bad workman always blames his tools. D. Trial and error opens the door to progress. C Imagine you are playing in a tennis match, and your performance will determine your team’s success. Your heart races and your skin is damp with sweat — all common signs of anxiety. However, the human body’s consistent response to anxiety actually masks two different psychological phenomena. The first — “growth anxiety” — occurs in response to challenges that are uncomfortable but manageable. The second — “toxic anxiety” — arises from situations that are beyond one’s ability to cope with. Toxic anxiety can be harmful to both body and mind, while growth anxiety can promote health and resilience, much in the way that exercise can make us fitter. In general, one’s performance under pressure follows an inverted-U curve (倒“U”曲线). As stress goes up, performance rises to a peak, and then drops off. This relationship, called the Yerkes-Dodson Law, was first described in 1908. Since then, dozens of studies have shown that there is an optimum level of stress that can produce the best performance, which is the sweet spot of anxiety. Growth anxiety can improve resilience in both mind and body. That’s likely because sudden anxiety leads to a short-term increase in two stress hormones (激素): cortisol (皮质醇) and norepinephrine (去甲肾上腺素). Cortisol prompts the body to release glucose (葡萄糖) to fuel the body and boost immune function. Additionally, brief exposure to cortisol can enhance brain’s capabilities in memory and learning. Meanwhile, norepinephrine increases your heart rate and blood pressure, preparing you for fight or flight, and helps you stay focused. Although a racing heart is uncomfortable at the moment, it can be beneficial as long as it doesn’t last too long. Everyone has a different sensitivity to stress. The same challenge could be terrifying for one person but exciting for another. But regardless of your stress tolerance, even small actions — like getting sufficient sleep and exercise — can help prevent you from sliding down the inverted-U curve. We shouldn’t fear growth anxiety any more than we do the muscle ache from a healthy workout. Both can be uncomfortable but make us stronger in the long run. 8. What can we know about “growth anxiety” from the passage? A. It can do harm to our body and mind. B. It can promote resilience only in mind. C. It occurs when we face controllable challenges. D. It arises when we can't deal with some situations. 9. According to the Yerkes-Dodson Law, what happens to performance as stress increases? A. Performance decreases steadily. B. Performance remains unchanged. C. Performance improves continuously. D. Performance first rises to a peak and then declines. 10. How does cortisol help the body during growth anxiety? A. It slows the heart rate. B. It reduces blood pressure. C. It makes the body release glucose for energy. D. It makes the body feel relaxed and sleepy. 11. What suggestion does the text give to manage stress effectively? A. Tolerating the stress. B. Ignoring physical signs of anxiety. C. Getting enough sleep and exercise. D. Avoiding all challenging situations. D Growing up in India, economist Abhijit Banerjee was always fascinated by the impressive mental math skills of young workers in local fruit and vegetable markets. “I could see kids in the markets doing complex calculations,” he said. “They could quickly calculate change (零钱) after selling multiple items.” Yet, Banerjee discovered that the same children struggled in formal written math tests, revealing an imbalance in maths education, especially for talented children from low-income families. Maths education is becoming ever more important worldwide. As societies grow more data-driven, students need skills beyond traditional textbook maths, such as data interpretation and coding basics. A sound grasp of principles of mathematical reasoning is also necessary for other professions and life skills. In a study published last week, Banerjee’s research group compared the maths abilities of two groups of under 18 students in India. Both attended school, but one group also worked in markets. The researchers found that the working group was more skilled in mental arithmetic than the other one. Yet, those who worked performed poorly in standard written tests, such as long division. The results show the power of learning-by-doing and its limitations. These children need help with mathematical reasoning to enhance their mental calculation skills. Moreover, if a student is already struggling with basic math concepts like algebra (代数), learning advanced skills like statistics or coding may not lead to desired outcomes. Most standard assessment (评估) systems worldwide focus on mastering the method and achieving the correct answer rather than understanding reasoning — how a specific result is achieved. Second, relatively few teachers are skilled at teaching reasoning and describing maths through storytelling, and of those, even fewer teach students from low-income families. These problems must be addressed through big-picture thinking, research-based assessments, and action from policymakers. Banerjee’s work highlights undiscovered talent. With proper guidance, these children could become researchers, entrepreneurs, or the math teachers that their countries urgently need, thus to help future generations reach their full potential. 12. What impressed Banerjee about the children working in markets? A. Their ability to count the items they sell. B. Their skill in mental calculation. C. Their talent to sell fruits and vegetables quickly. D. Their performance in maths tests. 13. What did Banerjee’s study reveal about the working group of students? A. They struggled in written tests. B. They had no interest in learning maths. C. They lacked basic math concepts entirely. D. They performed equally well in all math tasks. 14. Why do most assessment systems fail to promote mathematical reasoning? A. They prefer storytelling. B. They prioritize correct answers. C. They ignore the mastery of the method. D. They are designed for high -income families. 15. What can help children from low-income families improve their math ability? A. Teach them advanced courses like statistics and coding. B. Guide them to do more standardized testing. C Encourage them to gain more market calculation skills. D. Offer them more reasoning-based teaching. Without feedback, we are cut off. We behave in a way that we think is right while remaining ignorant. There is positive feedback and negative feedback. Negative feedback can be hard to handle. When it is poorly delivered, it is unhelpful. ____16____ Below are some useful tips to help us give negative feedback. Deliver feedback carefully and respectfully. If given too frequently and without regard to feeling, the person on the other end will go back to defense mode — possibly losing confidence, self-esteem, and motivation. ____17____ Avoid wrapping negative feedback in praise. The feedback sandwich — “praise, criticism, praise”, while popular, may not always be appropriate. The standard can give a false view of how someone is performing. ____18____ Therefore, this standard might suggest that the performance was successful. ____19____ Either positive or negative feedback can be constructive, as long as it encourages growth. On the other hand, critical feedback serves little purpose other than to tell someone they are not good. We must, therefore, begin by considering the goal of feedback: improvement. The receiver should be clear about what has gone well and what needs to be progressed. Negative feedback must be handled carefully. ____20____ If encouraged to play to their strengths, the person receiving the feedback may possibly find a more effective way of resolving difficulties. A. Pay attention to feedback’s true goal. B. Learn to view positive feedback properly. C. Two positive comments outweigh one negative comment. D. The key is to focus on solutions and strengths, not just problems. E. Giving feedback requires a certain amount of communication skills. F. Therefore, we’d better deliver feedback with both caution and respect. G. However, if appropriate, negative feedback can be a positive experience. A career in waitressing isn’t a dream job for most people, but Melina Salazar wasn’t like most people. Every day my father worked long hours in a glass factory, so that my family could live comfortably. However, my father could not earn much money to meet all household expenses. I, who dreamed of becoming a doctor, was just a student of average academic achievement in school, for which I could not get my favorite course to study. Instead, I joined a bachelor’s degree course, completed it, and eventually got a job in a company. While my life was going on with no dramatic change, my father continued to work in the factory, so that he did not have to depend on me. After one year of work, at my parents’ request I got married to a girl from a neighbouring town, and at the same time got a promotion in my job. In the years that followed, my wife gave birth to three kids and we had a happy family. However, when I began to earn a handsome salary, I also started to live luxuriously (奢侈地), spending money like water. As a consequence, I was neither able to manage all the household expenses, nor pay for the children’s education and other basic necessities. It so happened that my father fell sick, and as a result, could not continue his work in the factory. He came to the company where I worked and requested me to give some money for his treatment. I, who was now trapped in financial trouble. shouted at him, complaining, “You never gave me what I needed and wanted, and it took me more than 10 years to get settled. Now, while I am again struggling for money, you are not doing anything to help me, but instead are a burden to me! So, please don’t come to me again.” Hearing these words, my father left sadly. Walking home with a heavy heart, I encountered a small boy selling toys. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The poor boy’s story gave a shock to my heart. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 铧强中学高2024级月考试题 英语 (考试时间:120分钟 试卷满分:150分) 注意事项: 1. 1. For hours, I stared at blank pages, trying to turn my disorganised thoughts into fluent sentences. A. He felt excited and motivated. B 5. A 6. B 7. 根据第一段中“My excitement, though, was soon cut short when my professor asked me to write a research paper on the project. My body tensed. Writing was the last thing I wanted to do; it’s one reason why I pursued science in the first place. (然而,当我的教授让我写一篇关于这个项目的研究论文时,我的兴奋感很快就消失了。我的身体紧张起来。写作是我最不想做的事情;这也是我一开始追求科学的原因之一)”可知,当作者被要求写研究论文时,他感到紧张且不情愿。故选B项。 【5题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段中“I kept trying new designs, using the results to brainstorm ideas with a team of researchers. Finally, after dozens of designs, we had one that could work. (我不断尝试新的设计,利用结果与一组研究人员进行头脑风暴。最后,经过几十次设计,我们找到了一个可行的方案)”可知,作者最终的研究设计是经过多次尝试和努力才得到的,因此是来之不易的。故选A项。 根据第二段中“I had hated writing since I was a little boy. (我从小就讨厌写作)”以及“How could I know what was good if there was no objectively right answer? Maybe I wasn’t cut out for writing. (如果没有客观正确的答案,我怎么知道什么是好的?也许我不cut out写作)”可知,作者从小就讨厌写作,且认为写作没有客观正确的答案,因此怀疑自己是否适合写作。由此可推知,“cut out”在此处意为“适合,天生具有……的才能”,与“Born (天生适合)”意思相近。故选B项。 【7题详解】 推理判断题。根据第四段中“Before I could quit in defeat, though, the graduate student explained, “Red doesn’t mean you’re a bad writer. Writing isn’t a one-and-done thing. It requires revising your work, often several times.” Suddenly it occurred to me, “Hadn’t I done the same thing when I was designing my research project?” (然而,在我认输放弃之前,这位研究生解释说:“红色并不意味着你是个糟糕的作家。写作不是一次就能完成的事情。它需要多次修改你的作品。”我突然想到,“我在设计研究项目时不是也做了同样的事情吗?”)”可知,研究生的话让作者意识到写作和设计研究项目一样,都需要经过多次尝试和修改才能取得进步。由此可推知,作者从研究生的话中学到了“试错打开进步之门”的道理。故选D项。 C Imagine you are playing in a tennis match, and your performance will determine your team’s success. C 9. D 10. C 11. 根据第二段中“The first — “growth anxiety” — occurs in response to challenges that are uncomfortable but manageable.(第一种——“成长焦虑”——出现在应对令人不适但可管理的挑战时)”可知,“成长焦虑”发生在我们面对可控的挑战时。 根据第三段中“As stress goes up, performance rises to a peak, and then drops off. This relationship, called the Yerkes-Dodson Law, was first described in 1908.(随着压力的增加,表现会达到顶峰,然后下降。这种关系被称为耶克斯-多德森定律,最早是在1908年提出的)”可知,根据耶克斯-多德森定律,随着压力的增加,表现先上升到顶峰,然后下降。故选D。 【10题详解】 细节理解题。根据第四段中“Cortisol prompts the body to release glucose (葡萄糖) to fuel the body and boost immune function.(皮质醇促使身体释放葡萄糖为身体提供能量并增强免疫功能)”可知,皮质醇在成长焦虑期间通过促使身体释放葡萄糖来提供能量从而帮助身体。 根据最后一段中“But regardless of your stress tolerance, even small actions — like getting sufficient sleep and exercise — can help prevent you from sliding down the inverted-U curve.(但无论你对压力的承受能力如何,即使是像保证充足的睡眠和锻炼这样的小行动,也能帮助你防止沿着倒U型曲线下滑)”可知,文本给出的有效管理压力的建议是保证充足的睡眠和锻炼。故选C。 D Growing up in India, economist Abhijit Banerjee was always fascinated by the impressive mental math skills of young workers in local fruit and vegetable markets. As societies grow more data-driven students need skills beyond traditional textbook maths, such as data interpretation and coding basics. C. Encourage them to gain more market calculation skills. D. Offer them more reasoning-based teaching. 12. B 13. A 14. B 15. 16. G 17. F 18. C 19. A 20. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 Walking home with a heavy heart I encountered a small boy selling toys. The boy requested me to buy something. I asked the boy why he was selling toys instead of studying. The boy replied, “My father met with an accident a year ago and he lost one hand. He cannot work now. My mother works as a maid in a few houses. I have no choice but to help my parents by selling these toys. I go to school in the morning, and sell toys in the evenings. I work for 3 hours a day and study at night!” The poor boy’s story gave a shock to my heart. I thought about what the boy had said. I realized that he had been wrong in the way he treated his parents. I had learnt a lesson from the small boy. At a very small age, this boy was helping his parents, but I, in order to meet the demands of my luxurious lifestyle, had ignored my parents. I decided to make an apology to them the moment I got back home. 词汇激活 行为类 ①请求:request/ask ②学习:study/learn ③回答:replied/answer 情绪类 ①不对的:wrong/incorrect ②道歉:make an apology/apologize 【点睛】[高分句型1]Raj asked the boy why he was selling toys instead of studying.(由why引导的宾语从句) [高分句型2]He thought about what the boy had said.(由what引导的宾语从句) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
