Then it became a popular form of entertainment during the Tang and Song Dynasties. The Yuan Dynasty saw its spread to West Asia and Europe. Shadow puppetry became widespread in China’s rural and urban areas in the Ming Dynasty. This traditional art form reached its peak in the Qing Dynasty, developing unique regional characteristics. In modern times, however, it has been on the decline.
Characteristics
“One mouth tells stories of thousands of years; two hands operate millions of soldiers.” This is the essence of Chinese shadow puppetry. Behind a lit‑up screen, highly‑accomplished performers skilfully control different puppets by operating rods on them. This way, the puppets can make complex movements as vividly as living creatures. “一张嘴就能讲述数千年的故事;两只手就能指挥数百万士兵。”这就是中国皮影戏的精髓所在。在亮着灯光的幕布后面,技艺高超的表演者通过操纵杆来控制不同的皮影人物。这样一来,这些皮影人物就能做出复杂的动作,栩栩如生,仿佛是活物一般。

1. How do you understand “One mouth tells stories of thousands of years; two hands operate millions of soldiers.”?
I understand that the sentence is referring to how a shadow puppet performer works. With one mouth and two hands, he or she can perform the superb art skilfully. “One mouth tells stories of thousands of years” reveals the fact that a puppet performer plays different roles and tells the well-known stories passed down through the ages.
“Two hands operate millions of soldiers” points out the
amazing skill of the performer. The performer uses his or her hands to skilfully control more than one shadow puppet while acting out the vivid scenes.
“两只手就能指挥数以百万计的士兵”这句话凸显了表演者的非凡技艺。表演者通过双手巧妙地操控着多个皮影人物,同时生动地演绎出一个个场景。

News reporter: It is believed that Chinese shadow puppetry originated over two thousand years ago. Extremely popular during the Qing Dynasty, shadow plays
were regularly performed in almost every province. However, shadow puppetry is now on the decline. Why is this so, and what can we do about it? Let’s take a closer look.
Once a long-standing(存在已久的;悠久的) form of entertainment, Chinese shadow puppetry is being replaced
by new types of entertainment that arise as a result of the rapid growth of the mass media. These modern entertainment options, such as film and TV, are easily accessible and bring instant joy. Meanwhile, traditional art forms like shadow puppetry may appear old-fashioned and therefore less appealing. Hence, many audiences, especially the younger generation, prefer other forms of entertainment over shadow puppetry.
Besides, the number of shadow puppet performers is also dropping. To master the art of shadow puppetry, one has to
invest a great deal of time and effort. Moreover, this art form is mostly taught by oral tradition, making it more difficult to learn. There are many career opportunities now
available thanks to the country’s rapidly developing economy. Therefore,it is not surprising that the younger generation are less motivated to learn shadow puppetry.
Fortunately, steps have been taken to preserve Chinese shadow puppetry.Different styles of Chinese shadow puppetry have been included in the Representative List of State-level Intangible Cultural Heritage in China since 2006. In 2011, it was added to UNESCO’s Representative List of
the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The heritage status draws public attention to this ancient art form.
To attract more young audiences, shadow puppet performers have set about creating and performing new
plays, and schools and communities hold various cultural activities to promote shadow puppetry. Moreover, governments as well as shadow puppet performers are keeping records of shadow plays so that they can
be better preserved and passed on to future generations.
C.In pairs, have a discussion about Chinese shadow puppetry. Use the following questions to help you.
• What role has shadow puppetry played in Chinese history?
• What problems does shadow puppetry face in modern society?
• What can be done to solve these problems?
Tip
Acknowledging others’ opinions
When you are having a discussion, it is important to
acknowledge others’ opinions before you provide your own.
To acknowledge others’ opinions, you can use expressions
such as I see your point, I understand your point or That’s an interesting idea. Remember that acknowledging others’
opinions does not mean you have to agree with them.
Possible answer
A: In my opinion, since ancient times, shadow puppetry has helped pass on Chinese history, culture and values across our country.
B: You’re right. It also influenced different types of local opera and encouraged cultural exchanges between China and other countries. Nonetheless, now, the popularity of shadow puppetry is declining.
none·the·less /ˌnʌnðəˈles/ despite this fact,nevertheless尽管如此
A: I see your point. Young audiences aren’t very interested in it because newer types of entertainment grab their attention as they are easily accessible and can bring instant joy. By comparison, shadow puppetry, a traditional art form, appears old-fashioned and less interesting.
B: It’s a shame. The decline of the number of shadow puppet performers is another reason. Few people are willing to invest the time and effort required to master
the specialized art of shadow puppetry.
by comparison(尤用于句首)比较起来,较之
A: Added to that, our growing economy offers many other career options, reducing the motivation to learn shadow puppetry even more. I think shadow puppet artists should try harder to keep shadow puppetry alive.
B: Definitely! To attract young and new audiences, puppet performers should create and perform plays that are relevant to modern society and life.
A: That’s an interesting idea! Schools and communities could also hold various cultural activities to promote shadow puppetry. And governments also need to do their part in the preservation effort.
B: I understand your point. In fact, governments as well as shadow puppet performers are keeping records of shadow plays. Moreover, since 2006,different styles of shadow puppetry have been included in the Representative List of State-level Intangible Cultural Heritage in China.
A: That’s great. I did read that Chinese shadow puppetry was added to UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2011,which has also drawn global public attention.
B: Exactly! With all these efforts, Chinese shadow puppetry can be better preserved and passed on to future generations.
D.Write an article to promote Chinese shadow puppetry in modern society. Use your ideas from part C and the information in parts A and B to help you. Check and improve your writing after you finish it.

Chinese shadow puppetry: a Chinese cultural treasure
Chinese shadow puppetry, an ancient form of theatre, is believed to have originated over 2,000 years ago. Its true origin is not clear, but its historical importance is well known.
Through many ancient dynasties, shadow puppetry was used to pass on Chinese history, culture and values across the country, and from generation to generation. It also influenced different types of local opera. Besides, shadow
puppetry encouraged cultural exchanges between China and other countries during the Yuan Dynasty when it reached West Asia and Europe.
In modern times, unfortunately, the art of shadow puppetry is no longer as popular. The rapid growth of the
mass media has resulted in an explosion of newer types of
entertainment option that are easily accessible and can bring instant joy. Therefore, shadow plays appear old-
fashioned and less appealing to many audiences, especially the younger generation. In addition, the number of shadow puppet performers is also dropping. Our country’s growing economy has led to other more attractive career opportunities, so few are willing to invest the time and effort in learning the difficult art of shadow puppetry.
Fortunately, various measures have been taken at different levels in the hope of saving this cultural treasure. Chinese shadow puppetry has been included in the Representative List of State-level Intangible Cultural Heritage in China and added to UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Schools and communities hold various cultural activities that promote shadow puppetry to attract more young audiences, while puppet performers create plays
that portray modern society and life. Governments and shadow puppet performers are making efforts to preserve records of shadow plays for future generations.
Chinese shadow puppetry should not be buried in the past. Through education and promotion, community involvement and individual support, this ancient art form
will live and grow for future generations to enjoy.

Host: Good evening, listeners. Tonight we are going to talk about an amazing discovery in China that happened around a hundred years ago.
In Zhoukoudian, a small village in Beijing, local people were mining limestone in the surrounding hills when they began to find fossils. In 1918, an archaeologist named Johan Gunnar Andersson surveyed the site.

Three years later, he went back to the area with a research assistant. Around that time, two human-like teeth were found in a nearby hill called Dragon Bone Hill, but the significance of this discovery was not fully understood until years later.
In 1926, Andersson announced the discovery of the two teeth in Zhoukoudian, believing that they belonged to an unknown species of human beings.
With the help of a Swedish prince who was interested in archaeology, Andersson was able to attract the attention of the scientific community and raise money for an international research project. The newly discovered species soon came to be known as “Peking Man”, the oldest known human species at that time.
A team of archaeologists and geologists from both China and abroad arrived in Zhoukoudian in 1927 to search for more fossils.
In 1929, the Chinese archaeologist Pei Wenzhong made the most important discovery of all: an almost complete skull of Peking Man. Then the year 1936 witnessed another
milestone, when the Chinese archaeologist Jia Lanpo discovered three Peking Man skulls within 11 days.
These archaeological findings provided historic evidence for human evolution, giving insight into Asian prehistoric human societies and early human history. To acknowledge its significance, the Peking Man Site at Zhoukoudian was
added to UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 1987.
A2.The host is interviewing an archaeologist about the significance of the Peking Man discovery. Listen to the interview and complete the notes below.

Journalist: With me now is archaeologist Michael Jacobs, who will tell us more about Peking Man. Why is this discovery so important, Michael?
Michael: The Peking Man fossils provide evidence for Darwin’s theory of evolution.
Journalist: Could you tell us more?
Michael: Sure. These fossils show that Peking Man was so similar to modern humans that they must be related. This helps prove that human beings evolved from other species.
Journalist: So did Peking Man look like us?
Michael: Well, yes and no. The height of Peking Man was somewhat close to that of men and women today: males were about 156 centimetres tall and females about 143 centimetres tall. However, Peking Man’s head structures differed greatly from ours. Peking Man had a thicker skull, a lower and much larger forehead, bigger teeth, and a smaller brain capacity.
Journalist: Interesting! What else have we learnt from this amazing discovery?
Michael: It was the first major discovery of prehistoric human societies in China.By studying the site where the bones were found, scientists have learnt that Peking Man could use a wide variety of stone tools. Over 100,000
stone tools have been found in Zhoukoudian, which were used for different purposes. For example, there were fine tools for removing meat from bones, as well as bigger tools for cutting through bones.
Journalist: Could Peking Man use fire?
Michael: Yes. He could use fire, which was a remarkable achievement. In fact,Peking Man was the first to use fire in Asia. Peking Man could also preserve fire. He used stones or dirt to protect the fire from dying out.
Journalist: We can get insight into prehistoric human societies from the Peking Man discovery. That’s fascinating. Thank you!
A3. In pairs, role-play a conversation between a journalist and an archaeologist about the discovery of Peking Man. Use the example below to help you and pay attention to the
expressions in bold. Switch roles after you finish.
A: Could you tell me first how Peking Man was discovered?
B: Sure. After people in Zhoukoudian noticed there were fossilized bones in the surrounding hills, archaeologists began searching the area for more fossils.
fos·sil·ize /ˈfɒsəlaɪz/ ( Bre also -ise)(使)变成化石,石化;(使人或物)僵化
Two human-like teeth were found around that time, but it was only years later that scientists realized how significant these fossils were. The most important discovery was made by a Chinese archaeologist named Pei Wenzhong. In 1929, he found an almost complete Peking Man skull.
A: That’s incredible! But why was the Peking Man discovery so important? What have scientists learnt from studying the fossils from Zhoukoudian?
B: Peking Man was very similar to modern humans, and this was evidence that humans had evolved from other species.
In other words, Darwin was right! Peking Man was also quite clever. He could make a wide variety of stone tools, and there’s strong evidence that he had learnt how to control fire. strong
A: So Peking Man was a major breakthrough in the study of human evolution. Now I see it is a really important discovery!
B: Absolutely! I’m extremely proud that China has been able to contribute so much to our understanding of human evolution.
Peking Man is the first in a long line of fossil discoveries in China that shed light on how human beings evolved.
