Many underwater tunnels have been built around the world, serving as essential connections in regional transport networks. Let’s uncover the top 4 longest underwater tunnels in the world.
Seikan Tunnel
Seikan Tunnel is one of the longest underwater tunnel in the world, in terms of overall length, 33.46 miles.
Connecting Japan’s Honshu and Hokkaido islands, the Seikan Tunnel was finished in 1988, reaching depths of 790 feet beneath sea level. Having two stations is an achievement. They are important emergency exits if there is a disaster.
Channel Tunnel
The Channel Tunnel covers a distance of 31.35 miles linking Folkestone, in England to Coquelles, in France beneath the English Channel at the Dover Strait.
Construction started on both ends of the Dover Strait in 1987 — 1988. Completed in 1991, it officially opened on May 6, 1994. Presently it serves more than 10 million passengers over 1.6 million trucks through its rail shuttle service.
Ryfast Tunnel
Located in Rogaland County, Norway, the Ryfast Tunnel System comprises two tunnels stretching a total of 8.9 miles beneath the sea.
Ryfast Tunnel holds the record as the world’s deepest subsea road tunnel, reaching a maximum depth of 958 feet below sea level. Opened in 2020, the tunnel system serves as a replacement for the Høgsfjorden ferry(渡船)crossing.
Eysturoyartunnilin tunnel
Established in the year 2020, the Eysturoyartunnilin stretches a distance of 6.9 miles beneath the North Atlantic Ocean linking the two islands, in the Faroe archipelago, Streymoy, and Eysturoy.
Reaching a depth of 613.5 feet below the seabed at its deepest point, this underwater passage comprises a layout of three tunnels; however, its standout feature is undoubtedly the lively centre intersection (十字路口) — the world’s first and only subsea roundabout affectionately known as the “jellyfish (水母) roundabout”.
21. When was the Channel Tunnel officially opened?
A. In 1988. B. In 1991. C. In 1994. D. In 2020.
22. Which of the following is the world’s deepest subsea road tunnel?
A. Seikan Tunnel. B. Channel Tunnel. C. Ryfast Tunnel. D. Eysturoyartunnilin tunnel.
23. What is the unique feature of the Eysturoyartunnilin tunnel?
A. It is the longest underwater tunnel. B. It features a layout of two tunnels.
C. It serves more than 10 million passengers. D. It has the world’s first subsea roundabout.

Failure is a big part of everyone’s life. The problem many of us face, however, is that we automatically equate experiencing failure with being a failure. We view it as something to be ashamed of, or embarrassed about, something to be avoided or hidden.
In fact, failure gives us an opportunity to learn, adapt and grow. It should be expected on the way to achieving life goals and used as a feedback mechanism to get it right next time, or the time after.
I recently saw a woman who had to give up studying for her university degree. She had bipolar disorder and was unable to cope with the pressure of studying. She was studying to be a teacher and had hoped to find a teaching job. However, she failed her exams and job interviews, and overall felt like she was failing to achieve anything.
One of the things she enjoyed doing was singing in a band. So in order to earn a bit of money, she began giving singing lessons to children in her community. Fast forward 18 months and she now has her own growing business of teaching singing full-time. She hasn’t achieved this goal in the way she imagined, and she wouldn’t have embarked on this path without the setbacks she encountered.
What was it about this woman that made her succeed? Yes, failure had a big part to play, but the ability to bounce back and be flexible was an important factor.
An important part of developing flexibility is having a supportive network. Having relationships with people who can support us helps us go through tough times.
Our attitudes toward ourselves are also crucially important — including a sense that we are in control of our actions, have confidence in what we do, realize our strengths and set ourselves achievable and realistic goals. The secret to flexibility lies in accepting that there are things in life we cannot change. Rather than thinking of ourselves as victims, we need to realize we have the ability to change the way we think and behave. Ultimately, we will realize life may throw manure at us, but we can grow roses with it.
24. What do people usually think of failure?
A. Shameful. B. Unavoidable. C. Changeable. D. Rewarding.
25. Why did the woman give up studying for her university degree?
A. She had no interest in studying in university.
B. She failed all her exams without exception.
C. She was eager to start a singing business to make money.
D. She suffered from some disturbance and couldn’t handle study pressure.
26. What can be inferred about the woman’s success?
A. It had nothing to do with failure.
B. She succeeded easily without any difficulties.
C. Failure and the ability to recover and be flexible both mattered.
D. Only the ability to bounce back and be flexible led to her success.
27. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Failure should be avoided at all costs in tough conditions.
B. Singing is a better career than teaching in the case of the woman.
C. Flexibility and accepting unchangeable things are key to dealing with failure.
D. People with bipolar disorder can’t achieve success whatever their efforts are.
C
Most people hate mosquitoes-but scientists are about to build a “mosquito factory” to release modified mosquitoes.
The modified mosquitoes carry a bacterium called Wolbachia pipientis which can be naturally found in most insect species. However, it’s rarely discovered in mosquitoes. “We actually grow these mosquitoes that contain the bacterium,” Scott O’Neil. An Australian scientist who is involved in the project, told CBC News. When the modified mosquitoes are released, they slowly spread the bacterium to the population.
Several studies have demonstrated the insects’ success. For example, a controlled experiment in Indonesia showed that the modified insect helped reduce the cases of the disease dengue by 77 percent, according to a study paper published in 2021.
The World Mosquito Program has announced that it will release modified mosquitoes in many of Brazil’s urban areas over the next 10 years. The aim is to protect up to 70 million people from diseases such as dengue, a disease mainly spread by mosquitoes. Dengue patients may have mild symptoms like fever, but severe cases can lead to death.
Brazil has one of the highest rates of dengue infection in the world, according to the Nature website. “More than 1,000 people died of dengue in 2022 because of the spread of mosquitoes. It’s going everywhere,” Luciano Moreira, a scientist at the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, told CBC News.
Another way to prevent mosquitoes from spreading diseases is by producing genetically modified (GM 转基因的) mosquitoes. In 2022, the US Environmental Protection Agency cleared the release of 2.4 billion GM mosquitoes in California and Florida.
According to the agency, GM mosquitoes carry two types of genes: a self-limiting gene that prevents female offspring from surviving to adulthood, and a marker gene that allows researchers to identify GM ones in the wild. After being released, GM mosquitoes lay eggs, so the genes are passed on to offspring. In this way, the number of female mosquitoes is reduced, therefore reducing the chance of spreading disease.
28. Why are the modified mosquitoes grown according to Scott O’Nei?
A. To spread one of bacteria. B. To make money for the scientists involved.
C. To reduce the number of insects in the world. D. To prevent mosquitoes from biting people.
29. What can we infer from the experiment in Indonesia mentioned in the text?
A. Dengue is not a serious disease in Indonesia.
B. Modified mosquitoes have no effect on dengue.
C. Mosquitoes in Indonesia are not carriers of dengue.
D Modified mosquitoes can significantly decrease dengue cases.
30. What does the underlined word “cleared” in paragraph 6 mean?
A. Removed B. Approved C. Cleaned D. Blocked
31. What might be the best title for the text?
A. The Benefits of GM Mosquitoes B. Modified Mosquitoes to Fight Diseases
C. Genetic Engineering in Medical Research D. The World GM Mosquito Program’s Success
D
This week, Google researchers published a paper describing results from an AI tool built to create music. The tool, called MusicLM, is not the first AI music tool to be launched. But the examples Google provided demonstrate musical creative ability based on a limited set of descriptive words.
Several different music examples produced by MusicLM were published online. Some of the generated music came from just one-or-two-word descriptions such as “jazz”, “rock” or “techno”. The tool also created other examples from more detailed descriptions containing whole sentences.
In one example, Google researchers included these instructions to MusicLM, “It is a soundtrack of a game. It is fast-paced and upbeat, with a catchy electric guitar riff (反复乐节). The music is repetitive and easy to remember, but with unexpected sounds.” In the resulting recording, the music seemed to keep very close to the description. The team said the more detailed the description was, the better the system could attempt to produce it. The MusicLM model operates similarly to the machine-learning systems used by ChatGPT. ChatGPT and MusicLM both require powerful computers to operate complex machine-learning models. The San Francisco-based company OpenAI launched ChatGPT late last year. ChatGPT has recently received a lot of attention because of its ability to generate complex writings and other content from just a simple description in natural languages. Such tools can produce human-like results because they are trained on huge amounts of data. Many different materials are fed into the systems to permit them to learn complex skills to create realistic works.
However, the MusicLM researchers said there were some risks linked to the new tool. One of the biggest issues the researchers identified was biases present in the training data. A bias might be including too much of one side and not enough of the other. The researchers said this raised a question about appropriateness for music generation for cultures underrepresented in the training data.
32. What can we learn about MusicLM?
A. It is the first AI music tool to be launched.
B. It requires detailed descriptions of full sentences.
C. It generates complex writings from a simple description.
D. It creates music based on simple descriptive words.
33. What can be inferred from the passage about AI tools like MusicLM and ChatGPT?
A. They will soon replace human creators. B. They need a large amount of data for training.
C. They have no limitations in their applications. D. They are only useful in the field of music.
34. Which of the following is an issue of the MusicLM model?
A. Being difficult for some people to use. B. Requiring too much training data.
C. Creating music with strong preference. D. Producing music works with no creativity.
35. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. The development of AI tools. B. The popularity of ChatGPT.
C. The features and problems of MusicLM. D. The difference between MusicLM and ChatGPT.

72第二节:读后续写(满分25分)
I have always been passionate about English speeches, but I was born a shy girl who was afraid of standing in front of a crowd. When I entered Senior One, our school held an English speech competition, which I dreamed of taking part in for a long time. However, the fear of being laughed at always stopped me from signing up. I was worried that I would forget my words or make silly mistakes in pronunciation during the speech.
My English teacher Ms. Liu found my desire and my fear. She is a patient and knowledgeable teacher who always encourages us to challenge ourselves. One day, she talked to me softly and said that courage was not the absence of fear, but the decision to move forward despite fear. She told me that every chance to try was a step to grow, even if I failed.
Her words touched my heart deeply, and I finally made up my mind to sign up for the competition. I spent all my spare time practicing my speech. I read it aloud again and again to correct my pronunciation, and I asked Ms. Liu to help me polish the speech and correct my grammar mistakes. She guided me patiently and taught me some skills of public speaking, like how to make eye contact with the audience and control my speed.
As the competition drew near, my nervousness grew day by day. I practiced my speech hundreds of times, yet I still felt anxious, afraid that I would let myself and Ms. Liu down. I even thought about giving up when I stumbled over some sentences during the last practice before the competition.
On the eve of the competition, Ms. Liu sent me a short message, which said, "Believe in yourself, and your efforts will never be in vain. Be brave, and you will shine." Staring at the warm words, I took a deep breath and told myself that I should fight for my dream bravely, no matter what the result would be.

The day of the English speech competition finally arrived. Walking into the hall with my heart beating fast, I saw many students waiting nervously for their turn. When my name was called, I took a deep breath and stepped onto the stage calmly. I looked at the audience and saw Ms. Liu sitting in the front row, smiling and nodding at me to encourage me. With her warm gaze, I began my speech smoothly, trying my best to express every word clearly and confidently. I focused on my speech and forgot all my nervousness gradually.
When I finished my speech, a wave of warm applause swept over the hall. I bowed politely and walked off the stage with a big smile. In the end, I won the second prize, which made me extremely excited and proud. Ms. Liu congratulated me sincerely and said that my courage and hard work deserved the reward. This unforgettable experience taught me that we should never let fear hold us back from chasing our dreams. As long as we believe in ourselves and keep trying bravely, we will surely make our dreams come true and grow into a better self.

M: Two weeks.
(Text 2)
M: Have you been to the new department store yet?

M:I think I' ll wait a few days before I go.
(Text 3)
W: Why did you leave your previous job? Was the pay not good?
M: No. The job wasn't a challenge anymore. It was the same every day, so there was nothing new to learn.
(Text 4)
M: You' re into photography, right? Ever thought of joining our club?
W:I didn't know we had one! Tell me more.
M: Well, the meetings are biweekly. Just bring your camera and if you don't have one, we can arrange a rental at a very low price.
W: Awesome!
(Text 5)
M: Are you going to the party on Saturday?
W: Yes, but it's always difficult to know how to dress for parties. Maybe something formal would be better.
M:I don't have an idea, either.
(Text 6)
W: How was football today, Charlie?

W: Yes, and it feels comfortable.
(Text 8)
W: ⑩Boating is so much fun and I wish I'd tried it earlier.
M: I said you'd like it and that playing around here would be relaxing and not dangerous!

W: I know. ⑪But there was a fish that jumped into my boat suddenly. Too frightening!
M: Haha! Shocking maybe!
W: But I want to go again. And maybe we can make a weekend of it.

M: ⑮And last of all, Rome. I want to go there in June. Tell me about Rome.
W: Well, we were there in May. The weather was perfect and not too hot. ⑯It's a noisy city with a high cost of living, but it's so attractive. And people there are friendly.

W: When 13- year- old Debra Brown appeared on a popular television talent show earlier this year, she amazed everybody with her rich, powerful voice. Though failing to win, she was immediately signed by a record company. The head of the company said,⑰“There's never been anyone of her age who can sing with such a powerful voice. If she is trained properly, she will be successful all over the world and introduce classical music to more people.” Debra's first CD has just gone on sale. In order to keep up with her schoolwork when she is away recording in London, Debra has private lessons, ⑱although she attends her school whenever she is at home. Debra says her school gives her work to do when she's away. Nobody treats her differently there. ⑲Next month Debra will travel to the United States to advertise her CD, and this weekend she will sing before an international match. Her life is changing already.
