The joys of the night ride were the joys of feeling present in my body again. Cycling felt like a celebration of dynamic energy, of blood and bone. A reminder that my body was still healthy and functioning despite the two heart operations I had as a kid, which took me out of sports entirely. I remember the doctor’s orders: no football, no physical education.
They told me I was fragile (脆弱的), and so I became fragile. I was in middle school then. It felt as if my body had been taken away from me. They put me in a combination swing- dance-and-painting-class instead. But the doctors never said no cycling, and for a brief moment in central Texas, biking became more popular than football, which saved my social life. I still believe that the speed, the wind and the blood in the ears on a silent street can do that to my body—bring it back to life once again.
As time wore on, I developed an affection for the night ride. Below the whoosh (呼啸声) of the wind, I listened for my heart, then the rhythm of my tires over sidewalk. The pain of hard physical effort would pale, not to mention the wind buffeting my face. The rough road constantly told me that there was a road beneath my tires and the possibility of travel. The stress on both the body and the bike made real what I’d suspected all along: although removed from my family, my friends, my former life, I still existed in these streets.
There was a frivolity (轻松感) to the night ride, too, a kind of frivolity I hadn’t felt past years. I’d spent so much time sitting at a desk, sitting in bed, sitting on a sofa. My days were defined by constant anxiety and fear, and the world felt like a thing that happened to me, not something I could participate in. But during the night ride, I paid attention only to the moment. If I didn’t, I’d hit the pothole (坑洼) in the road. So by necessity, I became present, and I felt present, which is to say everything started to feel fun again.
4. What made the author have to choose the night ride?
A. Doctors’ advice. B. Poor health.
C. Heavy schoolwork. D. Cycling’s popularity.
5. What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A. The author’s energy got restored. B. The author’s figure got reshaped.
C. The author’s body became flexible. D. The author’s mind became strong.
6. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. The changes of the author’s life. B. The difficulties in biking at night.
C. The reasons for enjoying the night ride. D. The doubts about the author’s social life.
7. What does the author want to convey by mentioning the past in the last paragraph?
A. Life is about going with the flow. B. The past is full of endless regrets.
C. Living for the moment is necessary. D. Learning from the past is invaluable.
【答案】4. B 5. A 6. C 7. C
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇记叙文。文章主要叙述了作者骑夜行车得到的快乐和身体的康复。
【4题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段“A reminder that my body was still healthy and functioning despite the two heart operations I had as a kid, which took me out of sports entirely. I remember the doctor’s orders: no football, no physical education.(这提醒我,尽管我小时候做过两次心脏手术,但我的身体仍然健康,功能正常,这让我完全退出了体育运动。我记得医生的嘱咐:不准踢足球,不准上体育课)”根据第二段“They told me I was fragile (脆弱的)(他们告诉我我脆弱)”以及“But the doctors never said no cycling(但医生从来没有说不允许骑自行车)”可知,身体不好使作者不得不选择夜间骑车。故选B项。
【5题详解】
词句猜测题。根据文章第二段中的“I still believe that the speed, the wind and the blood in the ears on a silent street can do that to my body—bring it back to life once again.(我仍旧相信在宁静的街道上,那种速度、风声和耳边的血流声能让我的身体that——再次焕发生机)”可知,作者的身体再次焕发生机,所以that指代的是作者的能量恢复。故选A。
【6题详解】
主旨大意题。根据文章第三段“Below the whoosh (呼啸声) of the wind, I listened for my heart, then the rhythm of my tires over sidewalk. The pain of hard physical effort would pale, not to mention the wind buffeting my face. The rough road constantly told me that there was a road beneath my tires and the possibility of travel. The stress on both the body and the bike made real what I’d suspected all along: although removed from my family, my friends, my former life, I still existed in these streets.(在风的呼啸声下,我倾听自己的心声,然后是轮胎在人行道上的节奏。艰苦锻炼的疼痛会显得苍白,更不用说风吹得我脸上生疼。崎岖的道路不断提醒我,在我轮胎下有一条路,有旅行的可能。身体和自行车的压力让我的怀疑变得真实:尽管与家人、朋友、过去的生活隔离开来,我仍然存在于这些街道上)”可知,本段主要讲的是作者享受夜骑的原因。故选C。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“My days were defined by constant anxiety and fear, and the world felt like a thing that happened to me, not something I could participate in. But during the night ride, I paid attention only to the moment. If I didn’t, I’d hit the pothole (坑洼) in the road. So by necessity, I became present, and I felt present, which is to say everything started to feel fun again.(我的日子一直被焦虑和恐惧所定义,世界对于我来说就像一件发生在我身上的事情,而不是我可以参与其中的事情。但在夜骑期间,我只专注于当下。因为如果不专注,我会撞到路上的坑洼。所以,我必然变得专注于眼前并感受到当下的存在,那就是所有事情又开始变得有趣)”可推知,作者提到过去主要传达了活在当下的重要性。故选C。
C
The advantages of physical activity are widely recognized, and there’s an additional benefit to add to the extensive list. Studies have uncovered that middle-aged women who maintain a high level of physical fitness may reduce their risk of developing dementia (失智症) by nearly 90 percent in their later years. Moreover, if they do develop dementia, it is likely to occur a decade later compared to less active women.
Dr. Helena Horder from the University of Gothenburg in Sweden, who led the research, said, “These findings are exciting because it’s possible that making people’s cardiovascular (心血管的) system fitter in middle age could delay or even stop them from getting dementia.”
In the research, 191 women with an average age of 50 did a bicycle exercise test until they were very tired to find out their peak cardiovascular capacity. The average peak workload was 103 watts. Out of these, 40 women qualified as highly fit, achieving a capacity of 120 watts or more. Meanwhile, 92 women were categorized as moderately fit, and 59 were considered to have a low level of fitness, with a peak workload of 80 watts or less, or their tests were stopped due to health issues.
These women were later monitored for dementia six times in the next forty years. During this time, 44 women got dementia. Only 5% of the highly fit women got dementia, while 25% of the medium-fit women and 32% of the low-fit women got it.
“Nevertheless, this study does not establish a causal relationship between cardiovascular fitness and dementia; it only indicates a correlation,” Horder noted. “Further research is necessary to determine if improved fitness could positively influence the risk of dementia and to identify the most critical period in one’s life for maintaining a high fitness level.” She also acknowledged the study’s limitations, including a small sample size and the fact that all participants were from Sweden, which may limit the generalizability of the findings.
8. What additional benefit is linked to high physical fitness in middle-aged women?
A. Improved heart rate control. B. Reduced dementia risk.
C. Superior athletic performance. D. Absence of dementia risk.
9. Why did the researchers ask the women to do the bicycle exercise?
A. To change their exercise habits. B. To figure out their highest heart rate.
C. To judge their cardiovascular capacity. D. To detect their hidden health problems.
10. What can we know about Dr. Horder’s study?
A. Collecting data took a long time. B. Some participants left the study.
C. The results were quite satisfactory. D. It aimed to cure dementia effectively.
11. Which is the best title for the passage?
A. Middle-Aged Women Need More Exercise B. More Women Exercise to Avoid Dementia
C. Biking Betters Women’s Cardiovascular System D. Fit Women Are Less Likely to Have Dementia
【答案】8. B 9. C 10. A 11. D

The amount of sunlight that Earth reflects back into space has decreased significantly in recent years. Whether the decline is a short-term phenomenon or yet another bad sign for Earth's climate still has to be proved, scientists suggest.
Our planet, on average, typically reflects about 30 percent of the sunlight that shines on it. But new research strengthens previous studies suggesting that Earth’s ability to reflect light back has been declining in recent years, says Philip Goode, a scientist at Big Bear Solar Observatory in California. From 1998 to 2017, Earth’s reflectance declined by about 0.5 percent, the team reported in Geophysical Research Letters.
Using ground-based instruments at Big Bear, Goode and his colleagues measured earthshine—the light that our planet reflects to the Moon and then back to Earth—from 1998 to 2017 Because earthshine is most easily measured when the Moon is a slim crescent(新月)and the weather is clear, the team collected a mere 801 data points during those 20 years, Goode and his colleagues report.
Much of the decrease in reflectance occurred during the last three years of the two-decade period the team studied, Goode says. Previous analyses of satellite data, he and his colleagues note, suggest that the drop in reflectance came from warmer temperatures along the Pacific coasts of North and South America, which in turn reduced low-altitude cloud cover and exposed the underlying, much darker and less reflective seas.
“Whether or not this is a long-term trend is yet to be seen,” says Edward Schwieterman, a scientist at the University of California, Riverside. “This strengthens the argument for collecting more data,” he says.
Decreased cloudiness over the eastern Pacific isn’t the only thing cutting Earth’s reflectance, says Shiv Priyam Raghuraman, a scientist at Princeton University. Many studies point to a long-term decline in sea ice (especially in the Arctic), ice on land, and tiny pollutants called aerosols(气溶胶)—all of which reflect sunlight back into space to cool Earth.
With ice cover declining, Earth is absorbing more radiation. The extra radiation absorbed by Earth in recent decades goes toward warming the oceans and melting more ice, which can contribute to even more warming, says Schwieterman.
Altogether, Goode and his colleagues estimate, the decline in Earth’s reflectance from 1998 to 2017 means that each square meter of our planet’s surface is absorbing, on average, an extra 0.5 watts of energy. For comparison, the researchers note in their study, planet-warming greenhouse gases and other human activity over the same period increased energy input to Earth’s surface by an estimated 0.6 watts of energy per square meter. That means the decline in Earth’s reflectance has, over that 20-year period, almost doubled the warming effect our planet experienced.
12. What has happened to the sunshine that shines on the Earth according to the study?
A. It has been declining in recent years.
B. It has been absorbed much less by the Earth.
C. Its ability to come into the atmosphere has declined.
D. It has been reflected much less back into space by Earth.
13. What do warmer temperatures contribute to?
A. Darker seas and oceans. B. More reflection of sunshine.
C. More radiation released by Earth. D. Less cloud coverage low in the sky.
14. What isn’t mentioned in the text that can cool Earth?
A. Ice on land. B. Ice in the Arctic.
C. Tropical trees. D. Aerosol pollutants.
15. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Earth is losing more ice. B. Earth is becoming warmer.
C. Earth is reflecting less light. D. Earth is taking in more energy.
【答案】12. D 13. D 14. C 15. C

The next, who and what measures up? These uncontrollable moments in life are also the times when you find the greatest clarity. ____18____.The ones that make the effort: show up; come round; be there.
____19____see it as an opportunity to step back and reassess. Is your time and love focused on the things that truly matter? Are there conversations left unsaid? What do you want to do differently? If it all ended tomorrow, would your life have been well lived? I hope so. ____20____!
A. But it crossed my mind
B. Unless misfortune falls upon you
C. Then I‘m not entirely sure what happened
D. You see the people who are really there for you
E. When the breath is literally knocked out of you

47. 阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。
After graduating from UCLA as a film-making major, I was brimming with confidence, thinking to myself that I was bound to make a splash in this industry. Yet after being declined by countless enterprises, I ended up finding a temporary job as a birthday clown to make ends meet. I had to admit that the pay of playing the clown was pretty decent, but I struggled a lot with my new identity. Every sleepless night, I couldn’t help asking myself the same question, “Shouldn’t I be a filmmaker rather than a joker doing a ridiculous job?”
For certain parties, I had been assigned to play a specific character. Usually, the company would drop off a trash bag filled with a costume for me the night before the party. It was cruel, since these costumes smelled like the broken dreams of every failed actor that’d worm them before me.
One night, they handed me my trash bag and said, “Tomorrow you’re going to be Batman.” At the time I had a giant mustache, and a superhero with a mustache wasn’t what parents would anticipate. But I wasn’t in the mood to alter my physical appearance for that job, because that would have meant me admitting I was more of a clown than a filmmaker. So I didn’t shave.
The next day, I went to the party. I had to leave my car parked far enough away so that the kids wouldn’t see Batman driving a broken SUV. As a consequence, I had to walk to the party. Normally at these parties, all you have to do is pop in through the front door and say, “Surprise! Batman’s here!”
But a group of kids playing at the front door spotted me approaching, like, a quarter of a mile away, which made me start to regret my option. I was thinking, “Gosh, my stupid mustache is going to ruin this party.” Sure enough, once I got close enough for them to start identifying the features of my face, the entire party burst into laughter.
注意: 1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Super awkward, I turned around and wanted to drive my Batmobile away.

Paragraph 2:
I ran into the party, and they were all clapping their hands for me.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Super awkward, I turned around and wanted to drive my Batmobile away. At the sight of my strange behavior, the laughter from these kids faded away all of a sudden. “Is Batman escaping?” asked a child, his voice filled with genuine concern. I found myself rooted to the ground, unable to inch forward. Some awful memories flashed back in front of my eyes, making me feel my blood freeze. My heart was beating painfully fast, and my mind went totally blank. Another child broke the ice by yelling from the top of his lungs, “Batman never escapes!” It was his inspiring words that brought me back to reality, and I eventually gathered up my courage to do what Batman would do.
I ran into the party, and they were all clapping their hands for me. Unaffected by my previous move, the birthday boy jumped for joy and threw himself into my arms. I failed to contain my feelings, excitement written all over my face. It struck me that I was the only one bothered by me and my mustache. Feeling on top of the world, I cracked a smile at these little angels and opened my mouth, “Batman’s here! Who wants to fight against bad guys with me?” “Me!” they replied in chorus, and a trace of joy can be noticed in their voices, for which my long-lost confidence found its way back. Cape blowing in the wind, tears welling up in my eyes, I got rid of insecurity and self-doubt lingering in my heart and resolved to stay positive in the face of adversity.

Altogether Goode and his colleagues estimate, the decline in Earth’s reflectance from 1998 to 2017 means that each square meter of our planet’s surface is absorbing, on average, an extra 0.5 watts of energy.
