Christmas is coming, and it is time to warm yourself and head out to see some festive lights. There are plenty of choices when it comes to following a light path as part of your Christmas celebrations.
Oxford Street
Oxford Street’s festive lights are a treat for the eyes this year. However you’ll have to pick your hours carefully as the lights—which we returned on at the start of November—are only on for eight hours a day this year, from 3-11 pm, in the wake of the rising energy costs the country is facing. It is expected this will reduce energy usage by up to two thirds compared to previous years, when the lights have been on for 24 hours through November and December.
Kew Garden
One of the most famous light paths of the season, Christmas at Kew offers a full-on festive experience with over 2 km of lights to walk through. Along the way you’ll have the chance to sample festive food and drink, and possibly even say hello to Santa himself.
Regent Street
Regent Street’s lights are on the theme of The Spirit Of Christmas this year, bringing golden angels to the shopping street. The lights, which cover Regent Street and the St James neighbourhoods, were turned on on November 9, and like the Oxford St lights are turned on between 3 and 11 pm.
Covent Garden
A visit to Covent Garden will certainly get you in the festive spirit this year, with the central London destination offering a whole lot of lights—from 11 am until midnight every day until January 3. Visitors can also enjoy daily snow showers as well as festive food treats and heated wine—with over 40 different varieties there.
21. Why are Oxford Street’s festive lights just on for 8 hours a day this year?
A. The public ask to turn off these lights.
B. The quality of these lights is not good.
C. The government wants to save energy
D. The country expects to differ from previous years.
22. In which place do the lights mainly focus on The Spirit Of Christmas?
A. Oxford Street. B. Kew Gardens. C. Regent Street. D. Covent Garden.
23. What can visitors do when visiting Covent Garden?
A. Take a shower.
B. See snow every day.
C. Pick out the favourite lights.
D. Enjoy many different kinds of wines.
B
For over twenty years, fried chicken had been my absolute favourite food. I would have it at least three times a week, whether it was from a fast-food joint, a local diner, or even homemade. I planned my outings around places that served delicious fried chicken. There were times when I tried to cut back on it, especially when I started to gain some weight, but I always ended up giving in to it within a few days.
This year, a series of events changed my relationship with fried chicken forever. I began experiencing frequent stomachaches and indigestion Doctors couldn’t directly link these problems to fried chicken, but I noticed that every time I ate it, my discomfort worsened. Additionally, I started to realize that the once-mouthwatering smell and taste now left a heavy, greasy (油腻的) feeling in my mouth that I couldn’t ignore. One evening, after finishing a large bucket of fried chicken, I felt so sick that I couldn’t sleep well all night. That was the turning point. I decided that enough was enough.
Why was it so hard to let go before? Is there really something addictive in fried chicken? While there’s no official” fried chicken addiction” listed in medical books, experts point out factors that could contribute to its attraction. Dr. Johnson from a nutrition research centre mentions two key reasons: the high-fat content and the combination of spices. The high-fat content makes the brain release “happy chemicals” (endorphins), making us feel good, while the unique spices excite our taste buds, making us want more.
Now, I’m on Day 35 of my “fried-chicken-free” journey. The first week was tough. I had strong desires and even felt a bit down at times. But as the days passed, I started to feel better. My stomach problems became less frequent, and I even noticed that I had more energy. I’m really proud of myself for breaking this long-standing habit. If I can overcome my love for fried chicken, I believe I can overcome any other challenging habit in my life.
24. What can be inferred about the author from the first paragraph?
A. Fried chicken was only a small part of the author’s diet.
B. The author had a deep and long-lasting love for fried chicken.
C. The author never worried about the health risks of eating fried chicken.
D. The author successfully reduced the intake of fried chicken several times.
25. What caused the author to give up fried chicken?
A. A doctor’s strict order.
B. A friend’s advice on a healthier diet.
C. A newfound dislike for the smell of chicken.
D. Health problems and an unpleasant feeling after eating.
26. What makes fried chicken appealing?
A. Its low price and availability. B. Its cultural popularity and advertising.
C. Its fat content and spice mix. D. Its cooking methods and appearance.
27. How does the author feel about giving up fried chicken?
A. Uncertain. B. Confused. C. Satisfied. D. Regretful.
C
Gestures are older than spoken language and they support our words. Imagine life without being able to point. We do it all the time — in a pastry shop, to signal that you want the croissant without the burnt edges, or to indicate to your host at a dinner party how much wine you want. Think about the forefinger raised over your thumb. A larger gap indicates more wine.
Some gestures have a rich history and have lasted a long time. But in a sign of the times, for younger people, and specifically Generation Z, some of our most well-known hand gestures have changed. Common hand signals, such as writing in the air to get the bill in a restaurant, or the tap on the arm to ask the time, are at risk of dying out. Contactless payment systems and electronic billing systems have made checkbooks unnecessary, and many young people increasingly use their cell phones, rather than a watch, to tell the time.
Consider the UK. As of 2024 research shows that 99% of young people between the ages of 16 and 24 own a smartphone. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the hand signal for the “old-fashioned” landline phone is becoming unusual, since gestures that are specific to particular devices are likely to only be recognized by those who are familiar with such devices. In a TikTok video, New Yorker Daniel Alvarado commented, “This is how you know you’re getting old.” He showed how his children, when asked to gesture “phone me”, instead of holding a hand to their ear with their little finger and thumb stretched, each child held a flat palm to the side of their face to indicate a cell or mobile phone.
Our technological innovations will influence what remains and what dies in terms of our most common hand gestures. Like a flowing river, into which no one can step twice, history moves on, too. And like our language, our gestures change too, a reflection of the signs of our times.
28. What does the author imply by introducing daily communication with gestures?
A. The limitations of language. B. The helpful role of gestures.
C. The cultural origins of gestures. D. The significance of proper behavior.
29. What does the video of Daniel Alvarado mainly show?
A. Children are more open to new things.
B. Some gestures are difficult to remember.
C. Some gestures are generationally specific.
D. Children are overdependent on smartphones.
30. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Technological progress has no end.
B. The variation of gestures is unavoidable.
C. Older gestures carry more cultural values.
D. Human development is full of ups and downs.
31. What is a suitable title of the text?
A. Technology is changing our gestures
B Hand gestures are winning new users
C. Gestures reflect characteristics of society
D. Technology reshapes our communication methods
D
If your teacher assigns you a project, you may break it down into workable steps and start it right away. Now imagine that your teacher has assigned you to work with 10 other students. Instead of taking responsibility for certain tasks, you might assume another group member will take care of them. The other members of the group may assume the same, and you end up getting stuck with the entire assignment.
This phenomenon called social loafing (社会惰化) describes the tendency of individuals to put forth less effort when they are part of a group. One of the first experiments in social loafing was conducted in 1913 by a French agricultural engineer, Max Ringelmann. Participants were asked to pull on a rope both alone and in groups. He found that when being part of a group, people made less of an effort than when working individually.
Researchers continue to learn more about it, including whether certain factors can influence a person’s level of effort when in a group. In a 2005 study, half of the groups consisted of four people while the other half consisted of eight. Researchers found that people exerted greater individual effort when they were in smaller groups. While a team was high in responsibility and unity, members tended to make up for social loafing, resulting in greater team performance.
Now that we understand what social loafing is, we can study how to prevent or reduce it. It is important to break down large groups into smaller teams. As when people work in a large group, they are more likely to avoid contributing. It is also essential for everyone in the team to feel that their work is valued. Since when their efforts are appreciated and recognized, it can have a positive impact on the team.
32. Why are two cases mentioned in the first paragraph?
A. To compare the results of different tasks.
B. To stress the importance of teamwork.
C. To explain social loafing through real life.
D. To call for fair assignment of tasks.
33. What is the nature of social loafing?
A. The desire to get help from others.
B. The act of not caring about team performance.
C. The strategy of saving personal energy.
D. The trend to put in less effort as a group member.
34. What might be the possible reason for social loafing?
A. Lack of high-achievers.
B. Absence of good atmosphere.
C. Inability to finish tasks alone.
D. Shortage of personal responsibility.
35. How can leaders reduce team members’ social loafing?
A. Monitor the completion of their tasks.
B. Admire their achievements.
C. Give them the most feedback.
D. Encourage them to work together.

Every autumn, as the northern temperature drops, many birds head south to warmer climates. ___36___ Not necessarily. It is because the food that many birds need become scarce in the winter as the amount of sunlight diminishes and plants finish their life cycle. This food shortage signals to birds that it’s time to head south for new resources of food.
If you’ve ever watched birds flying south for the winter, you may have noticed that none of them appear to be carrying a map, compasses or Global Positioning System (GPS) device. ___37___ Even more astonishing, they will fly back to the north again in the following season. So how do they make it?
___38___The Sun rises in the east and sets in the west. Birds flying south for the winter can stay on track by identifying the Sun’s position throughout the day. Of course, once the Sun sets, it isn’t much help as a guide. Luckily, many birds can also navigate(导航) by the position of the stars once night falls.
Birds also enjoy the advantage of a bird’s eye view. Human lost in the woods sometimes must climb to higher ground to search for landmarks, like roads or coastlines, to determine their direction. ___39___ Sometimes heading south is as simple as following the path of a river that flows south.
Finally, experts think some birds may also get guidance from Earth ’s magnetic field (磁场). Certain species of birds have a special magnetic mineral in their beaks—and experts believe this mineral may help them detect Earth’s magnetic field. ___40___
A. Does the cold drive this migration?
B. One thing birds rely upon is the Sun.
C. Can birds easily handle long flights?
D. Birds just fly up into the sky to see everything below.
E. Yet they somehow find their way south to winter homes.
F. The migration process requires a great deal of energy.
G. Then these smart creatures can use it to guide them so accurately.

One morning during a summer vacation,my friends and I decided to go cycling in a beautiful mountain town. Our parents sent us to the local bus station. While we were boarding the bus and waving goodbye to them, my parents asked me to be safe. “Be careful when you ride in the hills. Pay special attention to cars and the mountain slopes (斜坡). Once you fall off the slope, your bones may be broken,” my mother said. I smiled and nodded.
Our bus started. Half an hour later, we reached our destination: We each rented a mountain bike from a bike store there and paid the rent. When the store owner handed us the bikes, he asked us to take care, and we all replied, “Sure, sir.” Then we cheerfully set off.
The road was in good condition, the air was fresh, the flowers on the mountain slopes were pretty, and the birds were singing. We avoided every car on the road and happily moved ahead, enjoying the beautiful woods. Halfway, we stopped for a while to look at the map. When we continued cycling, I said to my best friend Dylan, “How about having a race? Let’s see who can ride faster!” “Sure. Let’s do it,” Dylan agreed excitedly. Then we began to compete on the mountain road. I completely forgot my parents’ warning.
Dylan and I rode on the road as fast as we could, without realizing the possible dangers waiting for us. Our friends repeatedly shouted at us, “Wait, Dylan and Tom! Slow down! Don’t ride that fast! Stop racing!” However, we both turned a deaf ear to their warnings. I rode just a little faster than Dylan, and he rode crazily, trying his best to catch up with me.
Finally, I arrived at the terminal (终点站) we had set first. “Woohoo! I’ve won!” I shouted proudly. When I looked back, however, Dylan was nowhere to be seen. A moment later, he still didn’t appear, which made me feel strange.

W: I visited the countryside museum last week. It opened two months ago. You’d like it there.
M: Why? Is there lots of information about trees?
W: No. It’s about wild birds that live in the forest. You can watch videos there, too.
M: Oh! Is it open on Saturdays?
W: Yes. It’s only closed on Mondays. I went on a Thursday.
M: And where is it?
W: It’s fifteen miles from here. It took about twenty minutes to get there and about thirty to get home because the roads were busier then. Here’s a map for your parents.
M: Thanks.
W: When I went, there was a special plant exhibition, but they’re having a study day for teenagers there soon about different kinds of clouds.
M: Do I have to pay for the study day?
W: You’re fourteen, aren’t you?
M: Yes.
W: Well, you won’t because it’s free for students who are your age or younger. But it costs £18 for students who are sixteen or older.

W: Yesterday, I went to a place called Sidelli with my family. It was really interesting. In the morning, we visited a theater. It was built 2,000 years ago beside the sea and people used to watch plays there in the open air. There used to be an old fishing village nearby. After that, we had a guided tour. Rather than go to the old palace, which is full of tourists, our guide took us up a hill and showed us around what’s left of a library. Most of it had fallen down, but it still had a fantastic atmosphere. We then took a bus into the countryside for lunch, and we ate next to a waterfall. Afterwards, we took a walk from there to a lake. In the afternoon, we chose to go on one of two different factory tours. One factory made pots and plates, which sounded dull to me, and one produced carpets. That was the one we went on. There were lots of traditional designs, all made by local people. It was amazing. That was the last thing we did that day.

23 What can visitors do when visiting Covent Garden?
A. Take a shower.
B. See snow every day.
C. Pick out the favourite lights.
D. Enjoy many different kinds of wines.
C 22. C 23. D

根据“Covent Garden”部分关键句“Visitors can also enjoy daily snow showers as well as festive food treats and heated wine—with over 40 different varieties there.”(游客还可以在那里享受每天的阵雪,以及节日食品和40多种不同品种的热葡萄酒。)
A. Uncertain. B. Confused. C. Satisfied. D. Regretful.
B 25. D 26. C 27.

As of 2024, research shows that 99% of young people between the ages of 16 and 24 own a smartphone.
B. Hand gestures are winning new users
C. Gestures reflect characteristics of society
D. Technology reshapes our communication methods
B 29. C 30. B 31. A

根据第一段中的“Gestures are older than spoken language and they support our words. Imagine life without being able to point. We do it all the time — in a pastry shop, to signal that you want the croissant without the burnt edges, or to indicate to your host at a dinner party how much wine you want. Think about the forefinger raised over your thumb.
根据第三段中的“In a TikTok video, New Yorker Daniel Alvarado commented, “This is how you know you’re getting old.” He showed how his children, when asked to gesture “phone me”, instead of holding a hand to their ear with their little finger and thumb stretched, each child held a flat palm to the side of their face to indicate a cell or mobile phone.(在一段TikTok视频中,纽约人丹尼尔·阿尔瓦拉多评论道:“这就是你知道自己在变老的原因。”他展示了当被要求做出“给我打电话”的手势时,他的孩子们并没有伸出小指和拇指、将手举到耳边,而是每人将平摊的手掌放在脸侧,示意手机。)”可知,视频中老一辈的“固定电话手势”与孩子们的“手机手势”形成对比,主要表明一些手势具有代际特异性,不同年代的人因熟悉的设备不同而使用不同手势。故选C项。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“Our technological innovations will influence what remains and what dies in terms of our most common hand gestures. Like a flowing river, into which no one can step twice, history moves on, too. And like our language, our gestures change too, a reflection of the signs of our times.(我们的技术革新将影响我们最常用的手势中哪些会保留、哪些会消失。就像一条奔流不息的河流,没有人能两次踏入同一条河,历史也在不断前进。而像我们的语言一样,我们的手势也在变化,这是我们时代特征的反映。)”可知,作者将历史和手势的变化比作不可重复的河流,说明手势会随着技术和时代发展而变化,这种变化是不可避免的。故选B项。
【31题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第二段中的“Contactless payment systems and electronic billing systems have made checkbooks unnecessary, and many young people increasingly use their cell phones, rather than a watch, to tell the time.(非接触式支付系统和电子账单系统使支票簿变得多余,许多年轻人越来越多地使用手机而不是手表来查看时间。)”以及最后一段中的“Our technological innovations will influence what remains and what dies in terms of our most common hand gestures.(我们的技术革新将影响我们最常用的手势中哪些会保留、哪些会消失。)” 故选A项。
C 33. D 34. D 35. B

Instead of taking responsibility for certain tasks, you might assume another group member will take care of them. The other members of the group may assume the same, and you end up getting stuck with the entire assignment. 以及第二段中的“This phenomenon called social loafing describes the tendency of individuals to put forth less effort when they are part of a group.
根据第二段中的“This phenomenon called social loafing describes the tendency of individuals to put forth less effort when they are part of a group. (这种现象被称为社会惰化,指的是个体在群体中时会倾向于付出更少努力的趋势。)”可知,社会惰化的本质是个体作为群体一员时倾向于减少自身努力的趋势。故选D项。

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两 项为多余选项。
A 37. E 38. B 39. D 40. G

上文“Every autumn, as the northern temperature drops, many birds head south to warmer climates. (每年秋天,随着北部气温下降,许多鸟类会飞往南方更温暖的气候)”描述了鸟类南迁的现象。A选项“Does the cold drive this migration? (寒冷驱使了这次迁徙吗?)”以问句形式承接上文现象,引出对迁徙原因的探讨。下文“Not necessarily. It is because the food that many birds need become scarce in the winter as the amount of sunlight diminishes and plants finish their life cycle. (不一定。这是因为随着日照量减少和植物完成生命周期,许多鸟类所需的食物在冬季变得稀缺)”则直接回应这一问题,指出真正原因是食物短缺而非寒冷,形成“现象—提问—回答”的逻辑链。故选A项。
上文“If you’ve ever watched birds flying south for the winter, you may have noticed that none of them appear to be carrying a map, compasses or Global Positioning System (GPS) device. (如果你曾观察过鸟类南迁过冬,你可能注意到它们似乎都没有携带地图、指南针或全球定位系统设备)”指出鸟类没有携带任何导航工具。E选项“Yet they somehow find their way south to winter homes. (然而它们总能找到南方的越冬家园)”承接上文,用“Yet”与“没有导航工具”形成转折,强调鸟类仍能准确找到目的地。下文“Even more astonishing, they will fly back to the north again in the following season. (更令人惊讶的是,它们还会在下一个季节飞回北方)”则进一步补充鸟类返航的事实,与E选项共同构成对鸟类导航能力的惊叹,并自然引出下文“它们是如何做到的”这一问题。故选E项。
【38题详解】
下文“The Sun rises in the east and sets in the west. Birds flying south for the winter can stay on track by identifying the Sun’s position throughout the day. (太阳东升西落。南迁过冬的鸟类可以通过识别太阳一天中的位置来保持航向)”具体阐述了鸟类利用太阳进行导航的方式。B选项“One thing birds rely upon is the Sun. (鸟类依赖的一样东西是太阳)”作为本段首句,精准概括了下文的核心内容,起到总领全段的作用。故选B项。
【39题详解】
上文“Human lost in the woods sometimes must climb to higher ground to search for landmarks, like roads or coastlines, to determine their direction. (在森林中迷路的人有时必须爬到更高的地方寻找地标,如道路或海岸线,以确定方向)”以人类寻找地标作类比,突出人类需要费力攀爬才能获得视野。D选项“Birds just fly up into the sky to see everything below. (鸟类只需飞上天空就能看到下方的一切)”承接上文,用“just”与人类的费力攀爬形成鲜明对比,点明鸟类拥有得天独厚的空中视野。下文“Sometimes heading south is as simple as following the path of a river that flows south. (有时向南迁徙就像沿着一条向南流淌的河流前行一样简单)”则在此基础上,说明鸟类如何利用这一视野优势——通过观察河流等地标进行导航,形成“优势—应用”的逻辑关系。故选D项。故选D项。
【40题详解】
上文“Certain species of birds have a special magnetic mineral in their beaks—and experts believe this mineral may help them detect Earth’s magnetic field. (某些鸟类喙部有一种特殊的磁性矿物——专家认为这种矿物可能帮助它们感知地球磁场)”介绍了鸟类利用磁场导航的生理基础。G选项“Then these smart creatures can use it to guide them so accurately. (然后这些聪明的生物可以利用它如此精确地为自己导航)”承接上文,用“Then”引出这种生理特征带来的结果——利用磁场精确导航,使论述完整。故选G项。

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
Paragraph 1:
It was then that I realized something was wrong. My heart pounded as I scanned the winding road behind me — no sign of Dylan. Our friends caught up, panting and worried. “Where’s Dylan?” one asked anxiously. Suddenly, we heard a faint cry from below the slope. We rushed to the edge and saw his bike tangled in bushes halfway down the hill. Without hesitation, we ran down the steep path, calling his name. Fear gripped me — I remembered my mother’s warning about falling off the slope. What if he’d broken bones? Guilt washed over me for ignoring everyone’s pleas to slow down.
Paragraph 2:
On closer examination, we found Dylan lying on a nearby road, injured. He was conscious but holding his ankle, wincing in pain. “I lost control when I tried to overtake you,” he groaned. One of our friends immediately called for help while another stayed with him. Soon, local rescuers arrived and carefully carried Dylan to safety. At the clinic, the doctor said it was only a sprain — not as bad as we’d feared — but we all learned a hard lesson. From that day on, I never raced on mountain roads again. Speed wasn’t worth the risk; safety and friendship mattered far more.
