When I was about six years old, my mother came home one day and found that I had collected half a dozen babies of the neighbourhood—all of them too young to walk—and had them sitting before me on the floor while I was teaching them to wave their arms. When she asked the explanation of this, I informed her that it was my school of dance. She was amused, and placing herself at the piano. She began to play for me. This school continued and became very popular. Later on, little girls of the neighbourhood came and their parents paid me a small sum to teach them. This was the beginning of what afterwards proved a very profitable occupation.
My mother took me to a famous ballet teacher, but his lessons did not please me. When the teacher told me to stand on my toes (脚趾) I asked him why, and when he replied “ Because it is beautiful, ” I said that it was ugly and against nature and after the third lesson I left his class, never to return. This stiff (僵硬) and commonplace gymnastics which he called dancing only disturbed my dream. I dreamed of a different dance. I did not know just what it would be, but I was feeling out towards an invisible world into which I guessed I might enter if I found the key.
My art was already in me when I was a little girl, and it was owing to the heroic and adventurous spirit of my mother that it was not prevented. I believe that whatever the child is going to do in life should be begun when it is very young. I wonder how many parents realize that by the so-called education they are giving their children, they are only driving them into the commonplace, and taking away from them any chance of doing anything beautiful or original.
4. What was the writer doing when her mother came home one day?
A. Teaching some babies to dance. B. Directing some babies to walk.
C. Getting some babies together. D. Making some babies sit still.
5 How did the writer find the ballet?
A. Old and unpopular. B. Ugly and unnatural.
C. Graceful and original. D. Dreamlike and gymnastic.
6 What did the writer think she owed her success in art to?
A. The ballet classes she had attended. B. Her inborn talent and great efforts.
C. The lucky chance her parents gave her. D. Her mother’s support and understanding.
7. What’s the main idea of the text?
A. Children should be encouraged to be educated as early as possible.
B. Children should be driven to develop their interest in art at an early age.
C. Parents should discover and develop their young children’s natural gift.
D. Parents should instruct their children to decide on a promising occupation.

Sabrina Malikova, born in Tajikistan and raised in Russia, is fluent in Chinese. Her interest in the language began in primary school, when her school shortly offered Chinese classes. Even after the classes were stopped, she continued learning with private teachers. “In my city, I was the only child who could speak the language, and that gave me a real sense of pride,” she recalled.
As China grows stronger and offers more opportunities, Chinese becomes a skill that opens doors. Learning Chinese has gradually become a global trend (趋势), with nearly 90 countries including the language in their national education systems. Even primary school students in Africa are now showing a strong interest. Many people want to learn Chinese, because they can use the language as a tool in areas like social economy and tourism. Many others would like to benefit from Chinese technology as well. And they can use the language as a bridge.
As demand grows, new learning methods and tools continue to appear. There are many interactive digital products that make learning easier and more interesting. Chinese cultural products are also pushing this wave. Short dramas, games and online novels from China are reaching wider audiences globally, raising fresh interest.
To meet this growth, companies and educators are developing new tools. One example is Wisdom House International Culture Communication Group, founded in China in 2011 and active across the Arab world. AI is also starting to play a role in Chinese language learning. Malikova said she often uses AI to polish essays or check whether her phrasing sounds natural. “Before, I always had to ask my Chinese friends,” she said. “Now, with AI, I can solve many problems by myself.”
8. Why is Malikova’s experience mentioned in paragraph 1?
A. To show it is hard to learn Chinese well.
B. To share skills of speaking Chinese fluently.
C. To explain why early Chinese learning is better.
D. To lead into the topic of global Chinese learning.
9. What does the underlined word “wave” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. The use of AI learning tools.
B. The global trend of learning Chinese.
C. The development of Chinese technology.
D. The popularity of Chinese cultural products.
10. What might be a purpose for foreigners to learn Chinese?
A. To travel globally.
B. To spread the language.
C. To communicate better.
D. To copy Chinese culture.
11. What’s Malikova’s attitude towards AI tools for Chinese learning?
A. Satisfied. B. Doubtful. C. Confused. D. Proud.
D
Adolescence (青春期) is an important period for forming identity and learning to manage emotions. However, many young people express inner troubles not through sadness, but through anger, silence, or misbehavior. This makes helping them particularly challenging.
The teenage brain develops in a way that explains much of this behavior. The part handling emotions grows earlier than the part responsible for clear thinking and decision-making. This mismatch often leads teens to react with feelings first, not logic.
What looks like anger is often a cover for deeper issues—anxiety, fear, or feeling worthless. Similarly, pulling away usually doesn’t mean they don’t care; it may mean they feel overwhelmed. Teens who can’t manage emotions well often act out through aggression (攻击) or breaking rules. Seeing these actions as calls for help is the first step toward offering real support.
Good communication is key when a young person is struggling silently. Active listening — giving full attention, understanding, replying, and remembering what is said — makes a big difference. It helps to accept their feelings even when their behavior is off track. Saying something like, “You seem really upset right now,” can calm the situation and start a conversation.
Feeling emotionally safe is essential. Young people talk more openly when they feel accepted, not criticized. Clear rules also build trust and security by making life more predictable. Research confirms that a parenting style that is both firm and warm best supports teen well-being.
Besides support from others, teens need their own tools to handle difficulties. Simple techniques, like focusing on what they can see or touch, can help manage strong emotions. Writing in a journal or thinking quietly about their feelings helps teens understand what upsets them. Making choices based on personal values gives direction and builds confidence. These methods help teens face challenges with greater awareness and courage, leading themselves well even through hard times.
In summary helping troubled teens requires looking beyond surface behavior. By recognizing unspoken signals, listening without judgment, and teaching inner strength, both young people and their caregivers can build greater trust and enable meaningful growth.
12. What causes teenagers to react emotionally to situations?
A. All brain areas develop at the same pace. B. Logic skills develop before emotions.
C. Brain development is complete by age 15. D. Emotions develop faster than reasoning.
13. What can be inferred about teenagers’ anger or silence?
A. They usually keep their negative feelings to themselves.
B. Silence means teens don’t care about the people around them.
C. These behaviors are mainly caused by their dislike of family rules.
D. Teens with such behaviors often refuse any form of help from others.
14. Creating an emotionally safe environment helps teenagers to ______.
A. rely on their parents for support
B. express their thoughts more frankly
C. avoid experiencing strong emotions
D. focus more on their academic performance
15. According to paragraph 6, why should teens learn these techniques?
A. Because it can ensure their decisions are based on logic.
B. Because it can reduce their dependence on external support.
C. Because it can equip them with skills for dealing with problems.
D. Because it can improve their communication with parents and friends.

When Gloria Estefan started primary school, she could not read, write nor speak English. She felt lost, unhappy and completely frightened. However, someone changed her life—her English teacher, Mrs Collins. Her family had left Cuba in 1959 when she was only a year old in the hope of finding a better life in America. Initially they moved to Miami where the family settled in a set of apartments with other Cuban women and children who had immigrated.
The women were close-knit and supportive. While she felt safe, she was also isolated. They all spoke Spanish, and she rarely heard English. On her very first day in school, which she was looking forward to, she was completely shocked. She came home and told her mother that she had learnt her first English word “stupid”. It was the nickname a boy had given her.
In every way possible, she was set apart from her classmates. She was the only panic and non-white student. She also found it difficult to grasp the English language as it was her second language. The culture, her school friends and the food they ate were different from hers. As such, she was set apart from her classmates.
One person made that year bearable for her, Mrs Collins. She was young and African American, so she understood how Gloria felt as she was the only non-white student in class. Mrs Collins never doubted that Gloria could catch up with the other students in time.
Still, the teasing continued. The boy who called her stupid would not stop laughing at her for her accent. He was a good student and the proud holder of the class’s reading award. It was an honour given periodically to a student, based on excellence in schoolwork, participation and homework. Gloria wanted that long-waited award.

10. What might be a purpose for foreigners to learn Chinese?
A. To travel globally.
B. To spread the language.
C. To communicate better.

11. What’s Malikova’s attitude towards AI tools for Chinese learning?

In summary, helping troubled teens requires looking beyond surface behavior.
15. According to paragraph 6 why should teens learn these techniques?
A. Because it can ensure their decisions are based on logic.
B. Because it can reduce their dependence on external support.
C. Because it can equip them with skills for dealing with problems.
D. Because it can improve their communication with parents and friends.

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
One person made that year bearable for her Mrs Collins.

【答案】参考范文
Mrs Collins encouraged her to compete for the reading award. With this kind teacher cheering her on, she gained confidence and language skills. She made so rapid progress that by mid-year, she was well on her way to speaking English fluently and had a good grasp of reading. Besides, she did well in all the other subjects. She came to school early every day, participated actively in class activities and finished homework on time. What’s more, she made more and more friends in her class.
The award ceremony was coming up. She worked as hard as she could. When Mrs Collins announced Gloria as the winner in front of the whole class, it was her proudest moment. She immediately took the reading award right out of that boy’s hot little hands. The boy was shocked and unwillingly handed it to her. She felt so happy for herself, owing her success to her teacher, Mrs Collins. This served as a motivation for Gloria who worked even harder in school and earned more “A” grades.
