A 19-year-old surfer was found in stable condition after being found on a remote island off Australia’s New South Wales coast — an outcome his father called a miracle.
Darcy Deefholts left his Wooli home Wednesday afternoon for Wooli beach but failed to return, making his family contact the police. His father, Terry, posted a public appeal on Facebook that night, stating the family was “fearing for the worst” and urging boat owners to join the search.
According to NSW Police, an extensive land, air, and water operation involving multiple agencies located Darcy safe on Thursday. He was found on North Solitary Island , a rocky nature reserve approximately 9 miles offshore.
This coastline is popular for surfing, fishing, and diving, though not without risk. Last year, a missing rock fisherman’s body was discovered near another island in the same marine park.
In his emotional Facebook post Terry described his son taking a cream surfboard to a local spot around 4 pm amid small waves, likely wearing dark surf wear. “We are overwhelmed by community efforts,” Terry wrote, adding their sole wish was to “find our beloved boy safe.”
After spending the night trapped, Darcy was rescued and admitted to Grafton Hospital. A health district spokesperson confirmed he remains “in good spirits” under observation, supported by family. The family expressed deep gratitude to emergency services and community members who mobilized after he failed to return from surfing.
Speaking to the media, an exhausted Terry Deefholts admitted he was “close” to losing hope. “It’s unreal... I was thinking the absolute worst,” he told the ABC. “Who survives this? It’s a miracle.” He added to the Daily Telegraph: “I’m on cloud nine.”
Community efforts included a rapidly formed Facebook group, which gained over 100 members in under 24 hours. Its organizer, Casey Meaker, announced the rescue, writing: “He made it a long way out — but he’s ALIVE, safe... We are absolutely blown away by this young man’s strength and our incredible community.”
4. What did Terry Deefholts do initially?
A. He reported the incident to authorities.
B. He checked nearby beaches personally.
C. He organized a local search team himself.
D. He put up a desperate post for help online.
5. Why did the author mention the missing rock fisherman?
A. To emphasize the potential risks along the coastline.
B. To warn the locals to stay away from the coastline.
C. To highlight the popularity of fishing along the coastline.
D. To stress the importance of timely operations from the coastline.
6. What do Terry’s words “I’m on cloud nine” in paragraph 7 convey?
A. He was grateful to all the participants.
B. He was moved by the media’s concern.
C. He was satisfied with his wise decision.
D. He was overjoyed at his son’s survival.
7. Which of the following best describes the story of Darcy?
A. One in a million. B. A fish out of water.
C. One foot in the door. D. A diamond in the rough.
D 5. A 6. D 7. A
根据第二段“Darcy Deefholts left his Wooli home Wednesday afternoon for Wooli beach but failed to return, making his family contact the police. His father, Terry, posted a public appeal on Facebook that night, stating the family was “fearing for the worst” and urging boat owners to join the search.(达西·迪福霍兹周三下午离开伍利的家前往伍利海滩,但未能返回,家人因此联系了警方。他的父亲特里当晚在脸书上发布了一则公开求助信息,称家人“担心最坏的情况”,并敦促船主加入搜寻行动。)”可知,特里最初在网上发布了一则绝望的求助帖子。故选D。
【5题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“This coastline is popular for surfing, fishing, and diving, though not without risk. Last year, a missing rock fisherman’s body was discovered near another island in the same marine park.(这条海岸线是冲浪、钓鱼和潜水的热门地点,但并非没有风险。去年,在同一个海洋公园的另一个岛屿附近发现了一名失踪的岩石渔民的尸体。)”可知,作者提到失踪的岩石渔民是为了强调海岸线沿线的潜在风险。故选A。
根据第七段中“Speaking to the media, an exhausted Terry Deefholts admitted he was “close” to losing hope. “It’s unreal... I was thinking the absolute worst,” he told the ABC. “Who survives this? It’s a miracle.”(疲惫不堪的特里在接受媒体采访时坦言,自己曾“几近”绝望。“简直难以置信……我当时已经想到了最糟的结果。” 他对澳大利亚广播公司表示,“这种情况下谁能活下来?这就是个奇迹。”)”可知,特里认为儿子的生还是一个奇迹,所以他说“I’m on cloud nine”是表达他对于儿子幸存下来的狂喜之情。故选D。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段“A 19-year-old surfer was found in stable condition after being found on a remote island off Australia’s New South Wales coast — an outcome his father called a miracle.(一名19岁的冲浪者在澳大利亚新南威尔士州海岸附近一个偏远岛屿被发现后情况稳定,他的父亲称这是一个奇迹。)”以及最后一段中“He made it a long way out — but he’s ALIVE, safe... We are absolutely blown away by this young man’s strength and our incredible community.(他到了离海浪很远的地方 —— 但他还活着,安然无恙……这个年轻人展现出的顽强意志,以及我们这个了不起的社区迸发的力量,都让我们无比震撼。)”可知,达西在偏远岛屿失踪后获救,这是一个非常罕见且幸运的事情,所以A选项“One in a million(百万分之一)”最能描述达西的故事。故选A。
C
NEW YORK, New York-Bookworm alert: Merriam-Webster announced Thursday it has taken the rare step of fully revising and reimagining one of its most popular dictionaries with a fresh edition that adds over 5,000 new words, including “petrichor,” “teraflop,” “dumbphone” and “ghost kitchen.”
The 12th edition of “Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary” comes 22 years after the book’s last hard-copy update and amid declining U. S. sales for dictionaries overall, according to Circana BookScan. It will be released on November 18.
The company removed two sections of the “Collegiate’s” 11th edition that had biographical and geographical entries to make room for the new content. Greg Barlow, Merriam-Webster’s president, exclusively told The Associated Press ahead of the announcement that people no longer use dictionaries to learn such things as the location of Kalamazoo or who Nikolai Rimsky was. For that, they reach for the internet.
“We wanted to make the ‘Collegiate’ more useful, a better design, more interesting,” Barlow said. “We wanted it to be more rewarding to browse, more fun to look through, and to really be practical for research, but also a beautiful book.”
Merriam-Webster, the country’s leading dictionary company, sells about 1.5 million of them a year. Most are regularly revised but not fully restructured like the “Collegiate,” Barlow said. “While the print dictionary is not at all important to the growth and profitability of this wonderful language company, it’s still our heart,” Barlow said. “There are people out there who just love books, and we love books.”
“I do think there is that longing that people have to be able to pull a dictionary off the shelf and look up a word,” Kat Sarfas, marketing manager for nonfiction at Barnes & Noble, said. “There’s a certain desire to have these kinds of reference materials at home. It may be something that people feel like, as educated people, we should own.”
8. Why does the author mention the time gap and sales situation in paragraph 2?
A. To predict future book sales.
B. To highlight the release’s rarity.
C. To explain the delay reasons.
D. To show the company’s profits.
9. What change was made to Collegiate Dictionary for its 12th edition?
A. It added over 5,000 biographical entries.
B. It deleted biographical and geographical sections.
C. It focused on increasing sales of print dictionaries in the U.S..
D. It provided information about the location of Kalamzoo.
10. What is the goal of revising Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary?
A To sell 1.5 million copies around the world every year.
B. To be the best-selling dictionary in the United States.
C. To replace all regular revisions with full restructurings.
D. To become a practical and enjoyable reference book.
11. What is implied about print dictionaries?
A. They are no longer useful for research due to internet access.
B. Their sales in the U. S. have been on the rise in recent years.
C. Some people still value owning physical reference books.
D. They are the main source of profit for Merriam-Webster.
B 9. B 10. D 11. C

根据第一段“NEW YORK, New York-Bookworm alert: Merriam-Webster announced Thursday it has taken the rare step of fully revising and reimagining one of its most popular dictionaries with a fresh edition that adds over 5,000 new words, including “petrichor,” “teraflop,” “dumbphone” and “ghost kitchen.”(纽约,纽约书虫警报:韦氏词典周四宣布,它采取了罕见的步骤,全面修订和重新构想了其最受欢迎的词典之一,新版本增加了5000多个新词,包括“petrichor”、“teraflop”、“dumbphone”和“ghost kitchen”)”以及第二段“The 12th edition of “Merriam-Webster’s Collegeiate Dictionary” comes 22 years after the book’s last hard-copy update and amid declining U. S. sales for dictionaries overall, according to Circana BookScan. (根据Circana BookScan的数据,《韦氏大学词典》第12版是在该书最后一次硬拷贝更新22年后出版的,而美国词典的整体销量正在下降)”可知,作者提及时间间隔和销售情况是为了强调此次更新的罕见性。故选B项。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“The company removed two sections of the ‘Collegiate’s’ 11th edition that had biographical and geographical entries to make room for the new content (该公司删除了第11版《大学词典》中两个章节,这些章节包含传记和地理条目,为新内容腾出空间)”可知,第12版删除了传记和地理部分。
根据第四段““We wanted to make the ‘Collegiate’ more useful, a better design, more interesting,” Barlow said. “We wanted it to be more rewarding to browse, more fun to look through, and to really be practical for research, but also a beautiful book.” (巴洛说:“我们想让‘《大学词典》’更有用,设计更好,更有趣。”。“我们希望它浏览起来更有收获,浏览起来更有乐趣,对研究来说真的很实用,而且是一本漂亮的书。”)”可知,修订目标是成为实用且有趣的参考书。故选D项。
【11题详解】

D
The days of high school football players huddled around their coach, eyes fixed on a chalkboard or dry-erase board as their coach diagrams plays and shouts adjustments, may come to an end, just like oversized shoulder pads and high-top cleats.
Modern-day coaches are now armed with internet-connected tablets that give them access to plays mere seconds after they occur. Large-screen televisions are common on sidelines, allowing coaches to address entire teams of players at the same time.
If a correction needs to be made or a scheme changed, coaches have the information literally at their fingertips. “With the system we use, there’s a lag time of five seconds from when the play happens to when it gets into our system,” Mounds View, Minnesota, football coach Aaron Moberg said. “It’s an awesome competitive advantage. We can see plays and make adjustments in real time. We don’t have to wait to do them at halftime.”
The areas behind the end lines of football fields, typically reserved for bands, cheerleaders and field maintenance equipment, are now filled with towers standing roughly 40 feet that house remote-controlled, high-definition video cameras for recording games and practices. videos are uploaded and digitally stored, allowing coaches and coordinators to analyze plays and performances and create cut-ups, or edited highlight reels. “It is pretty incredible stuff,” said Norwood-Young America Central head coach Chris Goodwin, who was involved with filming games for the Gophers during the Glen Mason era. “We can make adjustments after one series. That’s huge.”
Drones(无人机) have also become more common, though the aerial vehicles are not allowed at MSHSL-sanctioned events, games or images for safety purposes and potential to create unwarranted distractions, according to the league’s handbook. Member schools can, however, use drones at practices.
Cost can be a barrier, but Ostlund, head football coach at Rochester Century High School said most experienced coaches saw the value in the new tech. As these tools evolve and become more accessible, they are set to redefine not only how plays are drawn up, but also how young athletes learn. adapt, and understand the game itself.
12. What is the function of Paragraph 1?
A. To summarize football’s long history.
B. To introduce the topic by contrast.
C. To criticize traditional coaching methods.
D. To explain high school football rules.
13. What does “it” in paragraph 4 refer to?
A. The remote-controlled, high- definition video cameras on the towers.
B. The process of uploading and digitally storing game videos.
C. The entire system of recording, storing, and analyzing video.
D. The traditional areas behind end lines used for bands and equipment.
14. Why are drones not allowed in MSHSL-sanctioned events?
A. They are too expensive for most schools to afford.
B. They cannot provide high-definition videos for analysis.
C. They will interfere with the work of cheerleaders and bands.
D. They may cause safety problems and unnecessary distractions.
15. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A. The Evolution of Football Equipment for Players
B. The Challenges of Applying New Technology in Football
C. How Technology Changes High School Football Coaching
D. Famous Coaches’ Opinions on Modern Football Technology
B 13. C 14. D 15. C
根据第一段“The days of high school football players huddled around their coach, eyes fixed on a chalkboard or dry-erase board as their coach diagrams plays and shouts adjustments, may come to an end, just like oversized shoulder pads and high-top cleats.(美式足球场上,那些围在教练身边、紧盯着画满战术的黑板或白板、听教练声嘶力竭调整部署的高中球员们,或许终将随着超大护肩垫和高帮防滑钉鞋一起,渐渐载入历史。)”
根据第四段it前面内容“The areas behind the end lines of football fields, typically reserved for bands, cheerleaders and field maintenance equipment, are now filled with towers standing roughly 40 feet that house remote-controlled, high-definition video cameras for recording games and practices. videos are uploaded and digitally stored, allowing coaches and coordinators to analyze plays and performances and create cut-ups, or edited highlight reels.(足球场端线后的区域,传统上本是乐队、啦啦队和场地维护设备的专属区域,如今却矗立起约12米高的塔架,内部搭载着用于记录比赛和训练的遥控高清摄像机。
由第五段“Drones (无人机) have also become more common, though the aerial vehicles are not allowed at MSHSL-sanctioned events, games or images for safety purposes and potential to create unwarranted distractions, according to the league’s handbook.(尽管无人机的使用日渐普遍,但根据明尼苏达州高中体育联盟手册规定,出于安全考虑及可能引发不当干扰的隐患,该联盟官方组织的所有赛事、比赛或集会均禁止使用无人机。)”
Have you ever been so absorbed in an activity that you forget what’s going on around you? Perhaps it happened while you were painting, gardening, or even cleaning your home. ____16____ It helps you switch off any worries.
What does “in the flow” mean? Sometimes you can be so wrapped up in what you’re doing that everything else fades away. A psychologist called Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi described this as being “in the flow”. It’s a happy, joyful feeling you get when focusing on something that’s challenging but fun. Every action, movement and thought flows. ____17____
How is it good for you? Csikszentmihalyi described flow as the secret to happiness. It helps you think more clearly because you tune everything else out. If you’re concentrating on a game of chess, for example, you’re not worrying about schoolwork or what other people think. ____18____ Being in the flow also feels good because you’re doing something for yourself, not for a prize or to please other people.
____19____ Well, flow isn’t always flashy — it’s subtle and steady. Here are the signs that you’ve entered that state: You’re doing something because you want to, not for anyone else; you’re clear about your goal and confident you can reach it; you’re so focused on what you’re doing that you forget everything else... If these signs appear, it means you’re in a state of flow.
How can you find the flow? Finding the flow is different for each person. You can pick a challenge that’s fun but you know you can do it. Find a quiet place without any distractions and away from screens. ____20____ Getting in the flow can make activities such as music practice or homework more enjoyable too.
A. What happens when you’re in a flow?
B. How do you know you’re in the zone?
C. Perhaps your brain focuses better before bed.
D. It also helps if you’re doing something you want to.
E. This helps you manage your emotions and feel less stressed.
F. Your whole being is involved and you’re using your skills thoroughly.
G. That feeling of deep focus and effortless involvement is known as “flow”.
G 17. F 18. E 19. B 20. D

Caught in a flood
Mary and her parents were downstairs in the living room. Mary was looking through the windows at the endless rain outside. It had been raining non-stop for three days. She had never seen a storm this bad. It was making her anxious and nervous. The wind roared (呼啸) and the rain beat on the roof and windows. Dad was listening to a weather report on the radio, and at the same time Mum was putting their important documents (文件) and disaster supplies into a bag.
“Mum, Dad,” said Mary all of a sudden, “I think we have to leave here right away!”
“No!” said Dad loudly, “It’s too late! The radio says the city has already been flooded.”
“We can drive our car through the floodwater! Let’s just leave! I’m really frightened!” cried Mary. “We can’t do that, honey,” explained Mum, “or the moving water could wash the car away!”
Mary walked to the door. She was curious to see how much water there was outside. “Don’t open the door!” shouted Mum and Dad at the same time, “The water may flood in!”
Dad moved the dinner table against the door, in case the floodwater forced the door open. Mum waved to Mary to sit on the sofa. “Mary, don’t worry. Everything’s going to be all right,” she said softly, trying her best to comfort Mary. Her voice sounded calm, but Mary could tell she was worried, too.
Without saying a single word, Dad walked to the sofa, sat down and hugged his wife and daughter. The sudden silence in the house seemed to make the wind and rain more frightening outside. What could they do?

One possible version:
After a brief discussion, Mum and Dad made a decision. They believed that they should stay in the house. They thought it would be really dangerous to try to walk through the water to get to higher ground. “Mary, we’ll have to go upstairs and wait there,” said Mum. “OK, Mum, if that’s what you think is best ...” Mary replied uncertainly. So they went upstairs and waited. Downstairs, water started flooding into the living room and kitchen. All three of them were nervous, but at least they had disaster supplies, including food and drinking water.
Finally, the rain came to a stop. But Mary and her family couldn’t leave while the house was still flooded. They listened to the radio and learned that rescue workers in boats were coming to rescue people who were trapped in their homes. They waited for a boat to arrive at their house. Fortunately, about half an hour later, the rescue workers in a boat discovered them and took them to a safe place in time. Their house had been badly damaged, but they were all happy to be still alive. While life is full of uncertainties, there is always hope!

In his emotional Facebook post, Terry described his son taking a cream surfboard to a local spot around 4 pm amid small waves, likely wearing dark surf wear.

D. He was overjoyed at his son’s survival.
7. Which of the following best describes the story of Darcy?

A. To sell 1.5 million copies around the world every year.

B The process of uploading and digitally storing game videos.

What does “in the flow” mean? Sometimes you can be so wrapped up in what you’re doing that everything else fades away. Every action, movement and thought flows. ____17____
How is it good for you? Csikszentmihalyi described flow as the secret to happiness. It helps you think more clearly because you tune everything else out.
