“So, as you can see, I designed(设计)a rest corner,” Enzo said, pointing to the design drawing that showed a room with glass walls on every side. “When sunlight comes in through the glass, the whole room is sure to look especially beautiful.” Middle school student Enzo Czeranna was showing his house plan.
After hearing this, architect(建筑师)John den Boer raised a question, “Where do you plan to do the laundry(洗衣)?”
Enzo froze(僵住)—he had really forgotten to add a laundry area,
“It seems that this corner is all show and no use,” Mr den Boer said.
Then, by offering some ideas, such as making the bedroom a little smaller, Mr den Boer showed the students how to change Enzo’s plan and add a laundry area.
This is one of the new courses offered by the Central Middle School for seventh and eighth graders this term. In this course, students design houses by themselves like architects, and then professionals give suggestions to improve their plans. After that, the students visit real buildings with these professionals and work together with them.
The students like the course very much. Enzo said, “Having people who actually work in the field show you the real problems and practical ways to solve them beats just learning from textbooks.”
Mr den Boer believes that teaching students architecture in middle school helps those who want to work in the field prepare for the job ahead.

Capybaras, the world’s largest rodents (啮齿动物), come from South America. These fascinating animals can be about 1.3 meters long and weigh up to 79 kg. They have short brown hair, short noses, short legs, small ears and hardly any tail. What makes them famous is that they can get along well with many other animals and even humans!
There is a café called the Capybara Cafe in Florida, the US. It isn’t a typical coffee shop. Instead, it provides the chance for visitors to spend time with the cute animals. The café has been very popular since it opened. Animal lovers have to book several months ahead to have a chance to visit it. A half-hour visit is $49 for each person.
After entering the reception (接待) area, visitors are divided into groups of 6-7 people and taken to a smaller room. The staff then put blankets (毯子) on the visitors’ legs and bring three capybaras into the room. “You can scratch (挠痒) them and show them your love,” said Stephanie Angel, the owner of the café. “They’ll climb onto your legs because they’re very used to people. And if you’re really good at scratching them, they’ll feel comfortable and even fall over.”
Several zoos and wildlife parks in the US allow people to meet capybaras. But Angel says none of them let visitors get as close to the animals as they can at the Capybara Cafe. She also plans to open another capybara cafe soon in Florida. The first one doesn’t sell coffee or hot food, even though its name includes “café”. But it does sell capybara-themed things like T-shirts, cups, and toys.
According to Angel, the café was created to help an animal organization in Florida. It offers money to support its work.
36. Which of the following might be a capybara?
A. B. C. D.
37. What information about the Capybara Cafe is mentioned in paragraph 2?
①Its price. ②Its location. ③Its products. ④Its popularity.
A. ①②③ B. ①②④ C. ①③④ D. ②③④
38. What is the main idea of paragraph 3?
A. Why the café is so popular. B. What visitors do at the café.
C. How visitors book a visit to the café. D. When capybaras will be comfortable.
39. What do we know from the passage?
A. Angel set up the café mainly to save capybaras.
B. People are allowed to touch capybaras in the café.
C. The café sells both coffee and capybara-themed clothes.
D. Visitors can get as close to capybaras in the zoo as they can in the café.
40. What is the purpose of the passage?
A. To tell readers how to start a café.
B. To explain why capybaras are famous.
C. To introduce capybaras and a special café.

For thousands of years, people have looked up into the night sky and wondered if humans could live on other planets. While Mars is often discussed, Venus, the Earth’s closest neighbor, is also an interesting planet to study.
Venus is often thought of as the Earth’s twin sister because the size and composition (构成) of the two planets are similar. But Venus has some of the most unusual conditions in our solar system (太阳系).
Venus is the hottest planet in the solar system because its thick air is full of CO₂. It holds heat like a blanket (毯子) and keeps the planet’s surface temperature at about 465°C.The air on the planet is so thick that if you try to move your arms quickly, you will feel resistance like swimming in water.
Similarly, it is hard to overlook the high air pressure on Venus, which is about 92 times stronger than that on Earth. To experience that pressure on Earth, you have to travel more than 914 metres down into the ocean.
Even time works differently on Venus: It takes Venus about 225 Earth days to travel around the sun, and 243 Earth days to rotate (旋转) on its axis (轴). The sun rises once every 117 Earth days, meaning that you can only enjoy about two sunrises every year. What’s more, the sun rises in the west and sets in the east!
So if humans try to live on Venus, we will face many challenges and it is nearly impossible with the technology we have now. This exactly reminds us that Earth remains the only known planet with conditions perfectly suitable for life. For our future, it’s necessary to protect it by making less pollution and saving resources (资源). Let’s take care of our beautiful blue planet—the only home for humanity together!
41. Venus is considered Earth’s twin sister because of their similarity in ________.
A. weight B. size C. air pressure D. temperature
42. Which of the following experiences can help people understand the meaning of the underlined word “resistance”?
A. Lying on the warm beach. B. Staying in the deep ocean.
C. Walking against a powerful wind. D. Feeling the heat from a thick blanket.
43. How does the writer introduce the air pressure on Venus in paragraph 4?
A. By telling stories. B. By listing numbers.
C. By explaining reasons. D. By describing problems.
44. Imagine you landed on Venus. Which of the following would you experience?
A. A day on Venus is shorter than that on Earth.
B. A year on Venus is longer than that on Earth.
C. The sun rises only once every year on Venus.
D. The direction of sunrise and sunset is opposite to that on Earth.
45. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. The danger of space research.
B. The importance of protecting Earth.
C. The ways of learning more about Venus.
D. The differences in conditions between Mars and Venus.

An Experience that Touched My Heart Deeply
Last summer, I had an unforgettable experience in the hospital with my sick grandmother. My parents and I rushed to her side when we heard the news.
During her stay, I took care of her. I read stories to her and helped her eat. Seeing her weak but smiling face made me feel both sad and determined.
This experience touched my heart deeply. It made me feel sad to see her suffer, but also happy to be there for her. I learned the importance of family love.
