When it was 5:45, the sun rose over Gombe National Park in East Africa. Our group went to the forest to watch chimps (黑猩猩) with Jane Goodall. She had been studying these chimp families for years. ①
When the chimps started to wake up and walk, everyone sat under the trees and waited. Then we followed them as they walked through the forest. Most of the time, chimps either fed or cleaned each other to show love to their family. We also observed the mother chimp and her babies play in the trees and then sleep together in a nest (窝) overnight. We realized the relationship between chimp family members was as strong as that in human families. ②
Before Jane, no one fully understood chimps. She spent years watching and recording their daily activities. Since childhood, she had wanted to work with animals in Africa. When she first arrived in Gombe in 1960, it was unusual for a woman to live in the forest. After living for a few months, she started her project. ③ For example, she discovered that chimps hunt and eat meat. Before that, everyone thought chimps only ate fruits and nuts. She also studied their communication and body language, helping to understand their social systems (系统).
In her old age, she spent much of her time speaking about understanding and caring for these animals’ lives. She traveled nearly 300 days a year to give public speeches. Also she helped build special places where they could live safely. ④ Through working with animals in their environment, she shaped the world’s knowledge of chimps and showed that women can live in the forest as men can.
4. What’s the meaning of the underlined word “observed” in paragraph 2?
A. Felt. B. Heard. C. Joined. D. Watched.
5. Where can we put the sentence “Her work changed people’s opinions on chimps.”
A. ① B. ② C. ③ D. ④
6. Which words can best describe Jane Goodall?
A. Caring and brave. B. Quiet and careful.
C. Honest and confident. D. Patient and humorous.
7. What’s the best title of this passage?

①Did you ever wish you could show your dreams to your friends or family? Now you might be able to use an AI device (设备) to create videos from spoken words.
②The Dream Recorder, created by the Dutch design studio (工作室) Modem, is a device that can record your dreams and play them back as short videos. The idea is that as soon as you wake up, you push a record button on the Dream Recorder and speak into it—in any language—describing what you remember of your dream. Then wait for AI technology to translate your spoken dream and create a short video. Soon, you can play this video on the Dream Recorder’s screen.
③The creators of the Dream Recorder say these videos can be used to help you think about the meaning of your dreams and how they might influence your waking life. Although the Dream Recorder can only keep dreams for seven days, the creators say that’s long enough to find any repeated themes in your dreams.
④The Dream Recorder is also an open-source DIY device that you can build yourself. All the things you need to build it are available to download for free online. All you need to do is to buy or 3D print the parts you need to make it.
⑤Modem is an unusual design studio because it has set itself an end date in 2030. This is meant to encourage the designers to take chances, experiment and create work that is focused on the present moment.
⑥Are you interested in trying it? Trust me, it’s what you need!

Fungus (真菌) from King Tut’s Tomb: A New Hope for Cancer Treatment?
Could a deadly fungus become a lifesaver in fighting cancer? Scientists say a fungus linked to the “pharaoh’s curse” (法老的诅咒) in King Tutankhamun’s tomb might open the door to a new way to treat cancer.
When some researchers opened the pharaoh’s tomb in Egypt in 1922, many died in the years later. People thought they were killed by a magical curse from the pharaoh who wanted to protect his treasures. Years later, in 1973, 12 researchers entered the tomb in a small country far from Egypt. A King who died 500 years earlier was buried in it. Within weeks, 10 of them died. From then on, people started searching for the cause of these deaths.
Scientists now think a fungus caused some of these deaths. Both tombs had a harmful fungus called Aspergillus flavus. It might have made the researchers sick. The fungus grows in soil and is common in crops. The harmful things it makes can cause illness or death, especially for people in poor health. The fungus can even stay inactive for thousands of years.
But recently, an international team of scientists has discovered that the fungus also makes something that could fight cancer. Through hard work, scientists learned that these useful chemicals are made inside the fungus’s cells. Then, they took out the chemicals and changed them to work better in a lab. After testing many times, the scientists found that this “curse fungus” makes something that might fight cancer.
In the test, they took four different compounds (化合物) from the fungus and tested them on cancer cells. When tested on human cancer cells, two of the four compounds worked powerfully against leukemia cells—a kind of cancer that influences healthy blood cells.
“Nature has given us this amazing ‘medical store’,” says Sherry Gao, who has been studying this research. “It’s our job to find out its secrets.”
12. Why did people believe in the “pharaoh’s curse” at first?
A. Because they found a harmful fungus in the tomb.
B. Because the pharaoh wanted to protect his treasures.
C. Because many researchers died after opening the pharaoh’s tomb.
D. Because the terrible event happened to the researchers in 1973.
13. What do we know about the fungus mentioned in the passage?
A. It is first discovered by Sherry Gao. B. It is helpful for people with cancer.
C. It can only be found in ancient tombs. D. It is harmless to people in good health.
14. What can we infer from Sherry Gao’s words?
A. Her research has solved nature’s medical problems.
B. The fungus is the most useful medicine from nature.
C. Nature provides many materials for medical research.
D. Doctors want to develop expensive medicine from nature.
15. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To introduce a new discovery about fungus. B. To describe how fungi work on cancer cells.
C. To explain the cause of the researchers’ deaths. D. To warn people about the harmful fungus in tombs.
【答案】12. C 13. B 14. C 15. A

A. Felt. B. Heard. C. Joined. D. Watched.

C. Live Alone in the Forest D. Jane Goodall and Chimps
(C)
8. How does the writer start the passage?

But recently an international team of scientists has discovered that the fungus also makes something that could fight cancer.
13 What do we know about the fungus mentioned in the passage?

Besides, don’t feel upset when you are in trouble and take ____48____ (自豪) in your small achievements. Making mistakes is part of learning.
