In Guangzhou,Zhang Weijing has noticed something remarkable."At the end of last year, the number
of foreign tourists in Guangzhou was much higher than in midyear. You can hear ditterent languages
everywhere now."she said.
A post-1995 girl who grew up in the city,Zhang has been working as a foreign-language guide for two
years.Fluent in English.Cantonese, and Italian, she sees herself as both a storyteller and a cultural
ambassador(大使).
To help visitors connect with the city's character,Zhang designs tours that highlight Lingnan traditions

trees locals plant in their courtyards."When I explain these designs, many foreigners find them ingenious
and praise Chinese people's wisdom,"she said.

skyline, she held up a black-and-white photo of the area in the 1990s,when it was still farmland. For her

Self-regulation,i.e.,the ability to manage attention, emotions and impulses,as well as to pursue
individual goals with perseverance,is not a skill that we usually associate with young children However,
studies show that people who demonstrated selt-regulation as children go on ta have on average higher
income.better health and greater life satisfaction.
An international team used a randomized controlled study in elementary schools involving more than
500 first graders. The research team was able to show that even a short training unit led to a significant and
sustainable improvement in self-regulation.The training did not just afiect self-regulation abilities;the
children had significantly improved reading ability and an improved tocus on careless mistakes one year
after the training, and were also considerably more likely to be admitted to a selective academic secondary
school three years after the training.
The training units were based on the MCII (Mental Contrasting with Implementation Intentions)
Strategy, which has already been the subject of excellent research studies in adults and older students. The
teachers presented the abstract strategy in a playful manner using a picture book and the role mode.a
hurdle jumper. In the first step, the children imagined the positive effects of reaching a goal. They contrasted
them with the obstacles that they might face on the way (Mental Contrasting). The children then identified
specific behaviors to face the obstacles and develop"when-then"plans(Implementation Intentions).
"The special feature of the study is the long-term rpple ettects that this short training unit can have.
These effects benefit the child, and they are transferred in many ways to society as a whole over the course
of the child's life,"says Daniel Schunk,a professor of public and behavioral economics at Johannes
Gutenberg University Mainz."The fact that early investments in such fundamental skills not only benefit the
child alone, but also society, should be given more attention to in education policy."

To examine the links between mobility behaviors and well-being,a research team led by Sandrine
Mailer,a Data Science Institute research fellow, examined questionnaire and GPS data from 2,319
psychology students from a university in the United States. At the beginning of the study, the researchers
collected students'reports of their general levels of loneliness and depression.Additionally, students used
their smartphones to answer questions about their anxiety, stress, and energy four times a day over the
course of the next two weeks.
One unique aspect of the study is that the GPS data were also collected during-this time. The GPS data
were transformed into several measures of mobility behaviors, which were divided into three broad types of
mobility patterns:distance (behaviors related to the distance a person travelled),entropy(the distribution of
time a person spent in different places),and routine(the regularity of a person's mobility patterns).
"After linking these mobility patterns to participants'well-being scores,we found that mobility was
related to well-being on the daily level,as well as on the level of an aggregate()across the study period,"
Muiller said."This shows that mobility behavior is not only important for understanding how people feel on
a particular day,but may also predict how they will feel over a longer time."
Distance and entropy specifically related to time spent in social places were related to more positive
well-being.Routine behaviors were related to depression and loneliness.Taken together, these findings show
that individuals'mobility behavior may indeed be useful in predicting their well-being.
"While it was not something our study was aiming to do,I think it definitely gives ideas for future
studies on interventions()and real-world applications,"Muller said."There's potential for learning
individual patterns and showing that on the days when people go to certain places, they feel better.By giving
them suggestions of trying certain things,we can try to make them feel better."
32.Sandrine Muiller got his findings mainly by
A.doing experiments B.analyzing data
C.making comparisons
D.having interviews
33.What were the psychology students required to do in the study?
A.Keep away from smartphones.
B.Report their moods every day.
C.Take psychological tests every day,
D.Keep a record of their daily routine.
34.What are people with more routine behaviors likely to experience?
A.Greater challenges.B.Joyful moments.C.Negative feelings.
D.Financial problems.
35.What may be the use of the discovery according to Sandrine Muller?
A.Curing people of bad habits.
B.Creating healthcare applications.
C.Recording people's exact positions.
D.Promoting individual well-being

The school year was coming to a close, and the air was filled with anticipation for the upcoming annual

favorite recipes.
Spirits were high.Every spare moment was devoted to perfecting the art of baking, from experimenting

Mark reported."They're serving up a variety of international desserts, and it's quite the hit!"
