Joel Sartore, a photographer, is travelling the world to take pictures of as many animals as he can find.
Sartore plans to take photos of 20,000 different kinds of animals. He hopes his photos will inspire people to help save the animals in great danger, and that he can document them before they’re gone. “My job is to tell their stories, and I hope that the world cares about them in time,” he said.
Sartore calls his programme the Photo Ark. He started it in 2005 in his hometown Lincoln, Nebraska. And he is still working on it.
However, Sartore doesn’t just take his animal photos in the usual zoo environment. He puts each animal on a black or white background with carefully chosen lighting. This helps him photograph them in their true colours, and lets people see a little mouse as clearly as a big elephant and look each animal right in the eye.
“When we look these animals in the eye, we’ve got a real chance to change ourselves and try to save them,” Sartore says.
Sartore is showing his photos around the world, and you can also see them on the Internet. He gives the money he has made by selling his books and photos to the Photo Ark.

Think your winter is cold? Temperatures in Yakutsk fell to -62.7℃ in January this year—the coldest in more than twenty years, scientists say.
Yakutsk is the capital of Russia’s Sakha Republic. It is just 300 miles south of the Arctic Circle (北极圈). ________ How cold is it in winter? Local people don’t wear eye glasses outside because they will freeze (冻僵) to the skin. People there know the key to keeping warm: Just dress warmly, in layers (分层), like a cabbage. During the winter, the city is covered with“ice fog ”. That happens because the air is so cold. The warmer air from houses, people and cars cannot rise at all.
Today, Yakutsk is a center for science, culture and business in Russian Far East Federal Region. But it wasn’t like this at first. In 1632, Pyotr Beketov led people to build the city. Then in the 1880s, people found gold and other minerals (矿物质) there. Now, companies in the Sakha Republic produce 26% of the world’s raw diamonds (钻石原石).
The city has a population of more than 330,000. They mainly live on dairy products (奶制品), meat and fish. Although there are rich natural resources (资源), many people live a poor life. Some even live in places worse than their farm animals’ living places.
Visiting Yakutsk in the winter is not a good idea, but its summers are cool. The city also has much more to offer, like special museums. Permafrost Kingdom is one of the most popular. It is an underground museum with ice sculptures (冰雕) that never melt.
Do you want to experience the life there?
29.Which sentence can be put in the ________?

C.It is one of the most popular cities in Russia. D.The local traditional food is very delicious.
30.What may the phrase “much more to offer” mean in the last paragraph?
A.Many other interesting things to see or do. B.Much more food to produce and sell.
C.Much colder weather to experience. D.Much more people to visit the city.
31.What can we infer from the passage?
A.People in Yakutsk are very rich because of the diamonds.
B.Eye glasses will freeze to the skin when people go out in winter.
C.There are more tourists visiting Yakutsk in summer than in winter.
D.The government is planning to move the city to a warmer place.
32.Which is the best title for the passage?
A.Yakutsk—The Coldest City in the World. B.The Natural Resources in Yakutsk.
C.People’s Life in the Cold Weather. D.The History of Yakutsk.
① There may be no place more dangerous than Death Valley (死亡大峡谷). Death Valley is the hottest and driest place in North America.

There is even a lake that has turned into salt crystals (晶体). But it is cold at night. When it gets cold enough, the water on the ground will turn into very thin ice. Then the strong wind—like a large hand—can move the rocks along the icy ground. That is why the rocks can “walk” on their own in Death Valley.
③The weather condition (状况) in Death Valley is terrible, but it is still full of life. Nothing can stop plants and animals from making it their home. People have found more than 1,000 kinds of plants there. It also has 51 kinds of mammals (哺乳动物), 6 kinds of fish, and more than 300 kinds of birds. The animals aren’t all small, either.
④Finding water is the biggest challenge for anything that lives there. Some plants have roots that go fifty feet under the ground to find water. Kangaroo rats (更格卢鼠) get the water they need from flowers.

59 (four), use new words in your writing. If you learn a new word, write a note in your notebook and try to use it in a sentence or diary. This has a good effect on remembering words.

【答案】例文
Dear Emily,
I’m Li Hua. I’m writing to tell you about the problem I’m facing at the moment. I’m struggling to balance my schoolwork with my personal interests.
I have a great passion for playing the piano, which helps me relax. However, as the exams are approaching, I find myself buried in endless homework and revision. I hardly have any free time for practice. I don’t know how to manage my time effectively.
Could you please give me some advice on how to strike a balance? I really want to find a way to keep both without sacrificing either. I would appreciate your guidance very much.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
