Love is a popular theme (主题) in Chinese poems. What symbols (象征) do you think best stand for love? The heart, rose or chocolate? This time we are going to look at a classic Chinese poem, Love Seeds. It was written by Tang Dynasty poet Wang Wei who had a different understanding of the symbol of love.
In the first two lines, the poet shows his feelings of missing his friend, who lives in southern China, by describing the growth of red beans in spring. In classic Chinese poems, poets prefer to show feelings in an indirect or symbolic way. When describing the natural things or showing some symbols, Chinese poets always mean more than what’s described on the surface (表面).
In Chinese culture, red beans are seen as “love seeds”, which have a strong cultural meaning. Because they are often hard, come in a heart shape, and can be stored for a long time. They have long been used as a symbol of love and loyalty (忠诚) between lovers.
In the last two lines, the poet wishes his faraway friend to collect as many red beans as possible, as the beans will bring back his friend’s memories to the poet.
Instead of showing love to others by directly saying “I miss you” or using flowery language, this short poem can make readers feel deep love.

B.Good rain knows its time right; It will fall when comes spring.

D.If love between both sides can last for aye, why need they stay together night and day?
①When you take the subway, you might notice many people, old and young, listening to audiobooks instead of reading paper books. Audiobooks have become quite popular these days. Why are more and more people choosing audiobooks over traditional books? Is listening to an audiobook just as good as reading a paper book?
②You need to find time available and a quiet place to sit down and read. However, you can listen to audiobooks anytime and anywhere you like, and it gives your eyes a break, too.
③But the big question is, do we get as much knowledge from audiobooks as we do from paper books? Researchers did an experiment to find the answer. Volunteers in Group One were asked to listen to an audiobook while volunteers in Group Two read a book of the same content (内容). The result showed that they remembered as much information, whether they listened to or read it.
④Another study from The Journal of Neuroscience further supported the result above. In the study, researchers scanned (扫描) people’s brains when they listened to and read books. The result showed listening to audiobooks activated (激活) almost the same parts of the brain as reading did.
⑤However, some people still believe that they learn better from reading paper books. One reason might be that when we listen to audiobooks, we are often doing some other tasks at the same time. “If you’re trying to learn while doing two things, you’re not going to learn as well,” Daniel Willingham, a researcher at the University of Virginia, told The New York Times.
38.How does the writer lead in the topic?
A.By telling a story. B.By listing numbers.

40.What does the underlined word “available” mean in the passage?
A.可使用的 B.可信赖的 C.可忍受的 D.可理解的
41.What did researchers find in the study?
A.People remembered more information from reading paper books.
B.Listening activated different parts of the brain from reading.
C.People can read and listen to the same content at the same time.
D.Listening makes no difference in remembering information from reading.
Exchanging gifts at the holidays is a tradition that dates back thousands of years. Children seldom buy gifts because they don’t have money. But the truth is that some of the best gifts don’t cost anything. If you would like to give meaningful gifts to family or friends at the holidays—without having to spend money—here’s how you can get started.
First, think about the person who will be receiving your gift. What are their interests and hobbies, or what foods do they like? What might they enjoy receiving that would tie in with those interest? For example, if they enjoy music, you can make them a personalized playlist or round up other young family members and give a musical performance. If they like baked goods, you can bake something delicious for them.
One of the best gifts you can give the people you love is time with you. With some cards, make a few “tickets” for future outings and put them in a gift box. For example, if they enjoy hiking, create a ticket to “go on a hike together.” If they like movies, you can write “share a movie night.” You could also give the gift of spending time volunteering together for the cause of their choice. For example, the two of you could gather old towels to bring to an animal shelter, clean up a park or beach.
Another creative gift that doesn’t cost a cent is to make a gift box of chores. Use pieces of paper to write down ways you can help a family member. For example, you could write “make dinner” or “wash the clothes.” Then put the chores inside a box. Give the box as a gift and invite the family members to choose a task when they need your help.
42.If you want to give your mother a gift, what should you think about first?
A.Do I have enough money? B.What does she like?
C.What can I buy for her? D.Will she like my gift?
43.What advice does paragraph 3 give us?
A.Buy film tickets for our loved ones. B.DIY some tickets for our loved ones.
C.Try to help other people as volunteers. D.Spend some time with our loved ones.
44.What’s the meaning of the underlined word chores?
A.Housework. B.Homework. C.Hobbies. D.Exercise.
45.What is the best title of this passage?
A.Enjoy holiday, enjoy gifts. B.An tradition of exchanging gifts.
C.Ways to choose cheap gifts. D.Tips on giving gifts with meaning.

The red beans grow in southern land;
How many loads (枝条) in spring the trees?

They would recall sweet memories.
(Translated by Xu Yuanchong)

①When you take the subway, you might notice many people, old and young, listening to audiobooks instead of reading paper books. Audiobooks have become quite popular these days.

How Can We Protect Ourselves?
As teenagers, we must always keep safety in mind. Here are some of my suggestions.
First, we should be careful when we make friends, especially online. Second, if we are in danger, we must call the police for help in time so that we can keep ourselves safe. Also, we are supposed to eat healthily and safely. Besides, we shouldn’t crowd each other when we go upstairs or downstairs at school.
