A Sock for Kerry
Jessica was preparing for the Invention Competition. The kids at her school were asked to invent something useful, make a model, and show how it worked.
“The competition is really going to be cool,” she told her mother. “The only 13 is, I want to help someone solve a real problem, but I can’t think of anything good.”
“I’m sure you’ll do fine,” said her mother.
“Oh, no! Mom, Kerry just crawled (爬) through the plans for my invention, and her leg brace messed them up!” Jessica shouted.
“You know you can’t spread out your 14 on the floor when she’s around,” said her mother. “Just be thankful she can crawl at all.”
Kerry, Jessica’s sister, had heart trouble. She wasn’t really able to use the left side of her body. Still, she learned to crawl and her 15 leg didn’t stop her from being a naughty little sister.
Just then, Kerry plopped (倒下) herself down on the floor and started 16 . She pulled at the brace on her leg. Her sock had fallen down again and the brace was hurting her leg. Mom quickly ran to her.

“That’s it!” Jessica said 17 . “I know what I’m going to do!” She rushed upstairs, collected a few things from her mother’s room and something from her sister’s room, and then 18 herself in her room to work uninterrupted.

“What a wonderful idea! Let’s try it,” said Mom. Kerry smiled as her mother put the new sock on under her brace.
Jessica’s invention won first prize at her school. “What an honor!” Everyone said to her. She felt proud, but what really made her feel 20 inside was when Kerry looked up at her with a smile. That’s when she knew she’d won something truly important-a special place in her little sister’s heart.

Doing More
Every Saturday, when her mother worked, young Belle spent the day at her grandmother’s laundry (洗衣店). She loved being with Grandma, but wished she could do more than just practice hobbies like drawing pictures and reading books.
One morning, Belle asked Grandma, “Please let me help with the customers!” Grandma agreed to let her write down orders and put tags on clothes. Belle could do small clothes easily, but when a very large bedspread (床罩) arrived, she couldn’t lift it. She lost her balance, and the bedspread fell on her, soft and heavy.
Belle struggled to come out from under the bedspread and saw Grandma smiling. “Why not draw instead? You’re such a good artist.” Grandma suggested. But Belle felt down. She wanted to really help-not just draw pictures.
That afternoon, Belle noticed some high school students painting shop windows along the street. They were painting “GO TIGERS!” in big letters.
“What if you get in trouble?” Belle asked.
One student laughed, “Don’t worry. No trouble! It’s a kind of special paint—just cornstarch (玉米淀粉), soap and food coloring. It washes right off!”
Belle’s eyes sparkled with excitement. She ran back to Grandma’s empty shop windows with a great idea. After getting Grandma’s agreement, she went to buy materials and mixed colorful paints by herself. Slowly and carefully, Belle painted these words on the window: “AFTER THE GAME, BRING YOUR UNIFORMS HERE!” Under the words, she drew a fun picture—sports shirts happily jumping into bubbly water.
When Grandma came outside, a small crowd had gathered. “Perfect!” someone said. Grandma gave Belle a big hug and said happily, “This just might work!”
Later, after the big game, when tired players really came to Grandma’s shop with their dirty uniforms, Belle knew her artwork had truly helped—just as she hoped!
24.How did Belle feel about spending Saturdays at her grandmother’s laundry?
A.Excited but restless. B.Upset but curious.
C.Happy and willing. D.Lonely and bored.
25.Why did Grandma hug Belle?
A.Because Belle tried to help bring customers.
B.Because Belle finished all the laundry by herself.
C.Because Belle said sorry for making a mess earlier.
D.Because Belle worked hard to improve painting skills.
26.What can we learn from the story?
A.Actions speak louder than words. B.Communication is key to success.
C.Teamwork often makes light work. D.Smart use of hobbies creates more.

Music is more than just entertainment. It is one of the most available and powerful ways to influence our mental state. Yet many people still fail to see its power. In fact, music can support mental health not only in clinical (临床的) settings, but also in our daily lives.
We all know that music can influence our emotions. It can calm us down, cheer us up, or even make us cry. But recent research has shown that music can also change the content (内容) of our thoughts. In a study of University of Bergen, Norway in 2019, participants listened to uplifting or sad music as they daydreamed. The result showed uplifting music led to more positive and active thoughts, while sad music brought about calmer or less motivating ones.
One Harvard University study finds that day dreaming takes up half of our waking hours. When we daydream, we are generally less happy. Why? Because during these daydreaming periods, the brain’s default mode network (DMN) takes over. This supports imagination, memory and reflection, but often gets us caught in repetitive, negative thought cycles: the painful regrets or the midnight worries. Fortunately, the brain has a natural counterpart (对应的事物): the executive network (EN), which helps us focus and carry out goal-directed actions. These two systems are anticorrelated—when one is active, the other quiets down. And music, especially when we are actively engaged (沉浸) in it, can shift brain activities controlled by the DMN into a mode supported by the EN. By tapping along with a beat, breathing with a rhythm, or humming a tune, we redirect attention, break negative thought cycles and give the mind a cognitive “reset”.
In fact, the benefits go beyond changing the thought content. In a 2023 experiment, people who tapped along with music felt significantly less pain from a short pressure on the fingernail than those who only listened. The pairing of musical engagement and related movement could reduce the pain to a clinically important degree.
All these findings show that musical engagement helps influence thought content and ease pain effectively. Therefore, music should be treated as more than a pastime: It deserves a place in schools, public health plans, and everyday routines. So when you are lost in negative thought cycles or stress begins to build, try your favorite song and tap along.
27.What does the writer mainly talk about in Paragraph 3?
A.How to discover the power of music. B.What to listen to while daydreaming.
C.Brain networks controlled by daydreaming. D.Science of how music changes thoughts.
28.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Active music participation reduces physical pain.
B.Music makes DMN and EN work with each other.
C.Daydreaming causes unhappiness in daily routines.
D.Sad music makes people calmer and more relaxed.
29.What message does the writer mainly want to convey (传递)?
A.Music helps pass time while we’re daydreaming.
B.Musical engagement should be encouraged daily.
C.Music activities change the structure of our brain.
D.Listening to music improves imagination and memory.

Do you compare yourself to other people? Perhaps your best friend received something you really wanted for Christmas, or you’re not allowed to go to a concert but your brother or sister is. Even though comparisons are normal and can sometimes be helpful, focusing on your own progress is important for your happiness.
Why does focusing on me matter? “We prefer to compare ourselves to others who are doing better or not as well as ourselves,” says psychologist (心理学家) Nicola Abbott. “But comparing your achievements to your past self (where you started) and your future self (where you’d like to get to) can be more positive.” This can make you feel proud of what you’ve achieved and excited about what you might do. Child psychologist Laverne Antrobus agrees and says that focusing on your own goals is more worthwhile than always trying to come out on top.
Do comparisons make you unhappy? Comparing yourself to those around you is natural and we often do it without realizing. It can help us to find our achievements and to form friendships with new people who have similar interests. However, it’s important to be realistic and remember that nobody is perfect, especially online and on social media. Taking note of how the comparison is making you feel matters, too.
If you begin to feel quite low, Abbott suggests choosing a different role model or focusing on your own strengths and what you’re good at. Antrobus agrees. She says that asking yourself questions like “________”, “What do I feel proud of?” and “What improvements can I notice?” can help to improve your self-esteem (how positive you feel about yourself).
“Jealousy (嫉妒) is an ordinary feeling,” says Antrobus, “but focusing on improving your own performance can help you feel just as successful. Learning to celebrate your friend’s achievements can help not only to improve your friend’s feeling but can also help you feel good. “It will encourage you to build each other up.”
30.What does the underlined phrase “focusing on” mean?
A.Paying attention to. B.Taking part in.
C.Playing a role in. D.Making use of.
31.According to Paragraph 2, Nicola Abbott agrees that it’s better to compare ________.
A.your failures with your past self and future self
B.yourself to others who are doing better
C.yourself to others who are doing worse
D.your achievements to your past self and future self
32.Which of the following can be put into “________” in the fourth paragraph?
A.Who am I? B.How can I help you?
C.What am I good at? D.Where do I come from?
33.What does the last paragraph suggest?
A.Not arguing with those around you.
B.Learning to congratulate your friends on their progress.
C.Trying to do better than those around you.
D.Not minding the feeling of being jealous.
第二部分
本部分共5题,共20分。根据题目要求,完成相应任务。
四、阅读表达(第34-36题每题2分,第37题4分,共10分)
阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。
“If you have time, put in extra (额外的) hours into work,” This is a slogan (标语) on the wall of a famous IT company. Another slogan says: “Everyone should work extra hours.” Such slogans caused a discussion.
Many people think companies shouldn’t have this kind of extra-working-hours culture. But some argue that a hardworking spirit is good for both workers and companies. That may be true. But a hardworking spirit cannot be misunderstood by calling for extra hours.
All the workers in the world want to finish work early and go home. If an emergency (紧急情况) comes out, most workers will surely put in some extra hours. However, by hanging such slogans at the workplace, the company is openly calling for working overtime while misusing workers’ time.
This kind of extra-working-hours culture might lead to workers trying to leave office later than the others. In fact, even those who finish their work early might not feel like leaving early because they might then be seen as being less productive (富有成效的) than those who are actually less efficient ( 效率高的). It certainly won’t encourage workers to work harder. Even worse, it is totally bad for workers’ health.
Earlier this year, some IT companies changed their past practice by allowing their workers to enjoy weekends and evenings off.
34.Does the writer support working overtime?
35.What will most workers do when an emergency comes out?
36.What are the disadvantage of the extra-working-hours culture for workers?
37.Is it necessary for students like you to study overtime to get better grades? Why or why not?

“The competition is really going to be cool,” she told her mother. “The only 13 is, I want to help someone solve a real problem, but I can’t think of anything good.”

1.—May I speak to Kangkang?
—Sorry, he is not in. He _________ since last month.
A.left B.has left C.has been away D.went away
【答案】C
【难度】0.4
【知识点】leave(left left)、go away、含since/for的现在完成时、延续性动词与非延续性动词
【详解】句意:——我可以和康康讲话吗?——对不起,他不在。他上个月就离开了。
考查动词时态。left离开,瞬间动词;has left离开,瞬间动词;has been away离开,延续性动词;went away离开,瞬间动词。根据“since last month”可知时态是现在完成时,he为单数主语,因此后接has+过去分词。和时间段连用,要用延续性动词be away。故选C。
2.—Li Lei, please get the chalk ________ the blackboard after class.
—OK. We’ll keep it clean, Ms. Wang.
A.to take off B.cleaned off C.to shut off D.gotten off

【详解】句意:——李雷,下课后请把黑板上的粉笔擦干净。——好的。王老师,我们会让它保持干净的。
考查动词短语和非谓语动词。to take off起飞,脱下,动词不定式;cleaned off清理,过去分词或过去式;to shut off关闭,动词不定式;gotten off下车,过去分词或过去式。根据“Li Lei, please get the chalk...the blackboard after class”和“We’ll keep it clean”可知,此处表示粉笔被清理掉,get sth. done“使某事被做”。故选B。
3.—What did people do when the music started?
—The singer began to sing along ______ it and the others began to dance ______ it.
A.to; with B.with; with C.to; to D.with; to
【答案】D
【难度】0.4
【知识点】dance to、动词短语、介词辨析
【详解】句意:——音乐开始时,人们在做什么?——那位歌手开始和着音乐唱歌,其他人也开始随着音乐起舞。
考查介词辨析。to伴随,随同;with和。it指代上文提到的music,动词短语sing along with the music表示“和着音乐唱歌,随着音乐哼唱”,dance to the music则表示“随着音乐起舞”,也就是在音乐的伴奏下跳舞。故选D。
4.—Walking more is good for our health.

6.—What’s the secret to your success, Daddy?
—You should pay attention to ________ mistakes.
A.avoiding making B.avoid to make

考查倒装句。So am I“我也是”,表肯定;Neither am I“我也不是”,表否定;So have I“我也去过”,表肯定;Neither have I“我也没去过”,表否定。根据“He’s never been to New York.”是否定句可知,下一句回答也是否定的;“Neither+be动词/助动词/情态动词+主语”表示“某人也不”,根据题干,这里助动词用have。故选D。

Doing More
Every Saturday, when her mother worked, young Belle spent the day at her grandmother’s laundry (洗衣店).

30.词句猜测题。根据“Even though comparisons are normal and can sometimes be helpful, focusing on your own progress is important for your happiness.”可知,尽管这种比较很正常,有时也有帮助,但关注你自己的进步对你的幸福很重要,因此focusing on指的是“关注”,与paying attention to同义。故选A。
31.细节理解题。根据“But comparing your achievements to your past self (where you started) and your future self (where you’d like to get to) can be more positive.”可知,Nicola Abbott认为最好把你的成就与过去的自己和未来的自己进行比较。故选D。
32.推理判断题。根据“…‘What do I feel proud of?’ and ‘What improvements can I notice?’ can help to improve your self-esteem (how positive you feel about yourself).”
根据“Learning to celebrate your friend’s achievements can help not only to improve your friend’s feeling but can also help you feel good.”可推断,这段的写作目的是:学会祝贺朋友的成就。故选B。

【答案】34.No, he/she doesn’t.
35.They will surely put in some extra hours.
36.It certainly won’t encourage workers to work harder and is totally bad for workers’ health. 37.No, it isn’t. Because students will have less sleep time, which is bad for their health.

36.根据“ It certainly won’t encourage workers to work harder. Even worse, it is totally bad for workers’ health.”可知,这肯定不会鼓励员工更努力地工作。更糟糕的是,这对员工的健康完全有害。故填It certainly won’t encourage workers to work harder and is totally bad for workers’ health.
37.开放性问题,言之有理即可,参考答案为:No, it isn’t. Because students will have less sleep time, which is bad for their health.
