A little girl ran to her bedroom and pulled out her piggy bank (储蓄罐) from a secret drawer in her closet. She took the change from it and counted it carefully three times.
She carefully placed the coins in a jar and twisted on the cap. She took the jar and slipped out of the back door. She made her way six blocks to a drug store. She waited patiently for the pharmacist (药剂师) to give her some attention but he was too busy attending other customers at that moment. She tried several times to get his attention but failed. Finally, she took a quarter from her jar and hit it on the glass counter, which was finally able to get her some attention.
“What do you want, little Miss?” the pharmacist asked the tiny girl in the front of his counter. “My brother is really, really sick and I want to buy a miracle,” the girl answered back. “I beg your pardon?” said the pharmacist. “My brother is really sick and my daddy says only a miracle can cure him now. So, I want to get a miracle for him. How much does it cost?” “I’m sorry but I can’t help you. We don’t sell miracles here, little girl,” the pharmacist said, softening a little.
Next to the little girl was a tall well-dressed man. He lowered himself and asked the little girl, “What kind of a miracle does your brother need?” “I don’t know,” the girl replied with her eyes in tears. “I just know he is very sick and has something bad growing inside his head. Doctor says he needs an operation. But daddy can’t afford it, so we need a miracle to save him now. I can use all my money to save my brother.” “How much do you have?” asked the man. “One dollar and twelve cents, it’s all the money I have now, but I can get some more if needed,” the girl answered in a whisper. “Well, what a coincidence,” smiled the man. “That is the exact price of a miracle for a little brother. Take me to your brother. Let’s see if I have the miracle your brother needs.”
The man was a famous nuerosurgeon He was just the right person needed to save the little boy’s life. The operation was completed without any charges and it went successfully.
Her mommy wondered how much it would have cost. The little girl just smiled, but said nothing.

Trust as explained in Wikepedia (维基百科) is the feeling of being sure someone or something can be relied upon. Trust is a big topic in many people’s lives. It produces an emotional feeling that is tied to the core of a person’s very existence.
Why do we want to break anyone’s trust? Why does this happen over and over again? It may arise from pride, control, dislikes, a difference of opinion and misunderstandings. Perhaps when you are living your life without self-worth and self-love then you are living your life in a continual state of negative thoughts and feelings. What you feel inside is evident by what you do and what you say. When you shift your energy within yourself and find your place of love and worth then your view of this world will change for the better. This energy shift towards the positive will shift everything that you think, say and do. Being kind to yourself projects outward to the world by being kind and good to others. This projection is the outcome of this positive energy shift. Our true self is one of love and feeling worthy of all of the goodness and happiness.
We have a tendency to look outside of ourselves for content when this feeling of content can be found within ourselves. The answers to our questions about life and love are within us. Sometimes we need to give ourselves a break and to be most loving most kind and most patient with us. Care for and love yourself to find the joy within. The love and peace of this world is in each and every one of us.
Meditation (沉思) can bridge that trust that we can have in ourselves. Then we can have more trust in the world and in others. When everything around us is breaking up meditation can help to keep us centered so we can find that deep connection of love and worthiness. That is your true self wanting to shine through. We can’t control anything else but we can control what we do.
When you choose to help yourself then you choose to trust yourself. Trust can lead us to a life of peace and love and fulfillment. The world has its own programs. Trust in love and peace and live your life like you mean it!
46. The first paragraph serves as a(n) ________.
A. background B. comparison C. explanation D. comment
47. If you want to have a positive life attitude, you should ________.
A. save your inside energy to create positive things
B. find a place where you’ll be respected
C. make sure what you truly want to do and say
D. try to show your true self naturally and continuously
48. When you fail or feel disappointed you should ________.
A. stop and adjust yourself
B. continue to work even harder
C. reduce the degree of your feeling of content
D. try to fully recognize your own fault
49. Based on this text meditation might make us ________.
A. modest when we achieve something
B. move from mistrust to trust
C. live a meaningful and unchangeable life
D. control ourselves successfully as well as the outside world
50. By writing this text the author wants to________.
A. encourage us to trust ourselves
B. teach us how to deal with negative energy
C. explain what love and worth are
D. show the importance of meditation
D
The Three Gorges (三峡) Dam, the largest dam in the world, is also the largest engineering project on the face of the earth. It aims to make the mother of all floods, the Changjiang River, into a tame river and it will be the largest power source for much of eastern and central China. It will create a huge, deep-water lake, and make it possible for 10,000 ton ocean going ships to sail 15,000 miles inland from the Pacific to the city of Chongqing with its 30 million people, making it the world’s largest river port.
Construction has already started in 1990s’. The dam will be about 6,860 feet long and 611 feet high, at a spot called Sandouping near Yichang.
After many years of investigation (调研)experts have drawn a conclusion that this grand project will do a great deal of good. The most important thing is flood control. By building a dam instead of new coal plants to meet its growing demand for electricity, China will give off much less poisonous gases into the air.
However, some scientists don’t agree to the project. They say that Chongqing and dozens of other cities along the river will put much waste into the reservoir (水库), which can do harm to people, fish and other living things that depend on the river. Sedimentation (沉积) and damage of a breach (决口)are problems, too.
The Three Gorges Dam could be considered, when it is finished in 2009, a new eighth wonder of the world as to the size alone.
51. Which is not the purpose to build such a huge dam?
A. To make electricity. B. To prevent floods.
C. To improve navigation (运输) D. To make it a wonder.
52. Where does the dam lie?
A. Near Chongqing B. Near Yichang. C. In the Three Gorges D. In Wuhan.
53. It will take about ______ to complete the dam.
A eight years B. more than ten years C. half a century D. more than twenty years.
54. Some scientists fear that______.
A. other cities along the river will put much waste into the reservoir
B. sedimentation may occur
C. a breach may cause millions of people to die or to be homeless
D. all the above
55. According to the passage, which of the following statements is NOT right?
A. When finished, the dam will be one of the main bases of power source of China.
B. People have different ideas about the setting up of the dam.
C. It will take many years to build the dam because people want to see whether it will be safe and strong enough.
D. Chongqing will become the largest riverport in world when the dam is finished.
Most people agree that honesty is a good thing. But does Mother Nature agree? Animals can't talk, but can they lie in other ways? Can they lie with their bodies and behavior? Animal experts may not call it lying, but they do agree that many animals, from birds to chimpanzees, behave dishonestly to fool other animals. Why? Dishonesty often helps them survive.
Many kinds of birds are very successful at fooling other animals. For example, a bird called the plover sometimes pretends to be hurt in order to protect its young. When a predator(猎食动物)gets close to its nest, the plover leads the predator away from the nest. How? It pretends to have a broken wing. The predator follows the "hurt" adult, leaving the baby birds safe in the nest.
Another kind of bird, the scrub jay, buries its food so it always has something to eat. Scrub jays are also thieves. They watch where others bury their food and steal it. But clever scrub jays seem to know when a thief is watching them. So they go back later, unbury the food, and bury it again somewhere else. Birds called cuckoos have found a way to have babies without doing much work. How? They don't make nests. Instead, they get into other birds' nests secretly. Then they lay their eggs and fly away. When the baby birds come out, their adoptive parents feed them.
Chimpanzees, or chimps, can also be sneaky. After a fight, the losing chimp will give its hand to the other. When the winning chimp puts out its hand, too, the chimps are friendly again. But an animal expert once saw a losing chimp take the winner's hand and start fighting again.
Chimps are dishonest in other ways, too. When chimps find food that they love, such as bananas, it is natural for them to cry out. Then other chimps come running. But some clever chimps learn to cry very softly when they find food. That way, other chimps don't hear them, and they don't need to share their food.
As children, many of us learn the saying "You can't fool Mother Nature." But maybe you can't trust her, either.
56. According to the passage, why do many animals behave dishonestly to fool others? (no more than 10 words)
57. How does a plover deal with it when a predator approaches its nest? (no more than 15 words)
58. Who often feed cuckoos' baby birds? (no more than 3 words)

Sometimes we need to give ourselves a break and to be most loving, most kind and most patient with us.

A. eight years B. more than ten years C. half a century D. more than twenty years.
D 52. B 53. B 54. D 55. C

根据第一段“It will create a huge, deep-water lake, and make it possible for 10,000 ton ocean going ships to sail 15,000 miles inland from the Pacific to the city of Chongqing with its 30 million people, making it the world’s largest river port.(它将形成一个巨大的深水湖,使1万吨远洋船舶从太平洋向内陆航行1.5万英里到达拥有3000万人口的重庆成为可能,使其成为世界上最大的内河港口。)”根据第三段“The most important thing is flood control. By building a dam instead of new coal plants to meet its growing demand for electricity, China will give off much less poisonous gases into the air.(最重要的是防洪。通过修建大坝而不是新建燃煤电厂来满足日益增长的电力需求,中国向空气中排放的有毒气体将大大减少。)”可知,造大坝的目的是发电、防洪和改善航运,并没有提到为了成为奇观。故选D。
【52题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“The dam will be about 6,860 feet long and 611 feet high, at a spot called Sandouping near Yichang.(这座大坝长约6860英尺,高611英尺,位于宜昌附近的三斗坪。)”
和“when it is finished in 2009(当它在2009年完工)”可知,建造大坝大约需要十多年。
根据倒数第二段“They say that Chongqing and dozens of other cities along the river will put much waste into the reservoir(水库), which can do harm to people, fish and other living things that depend on the river. Sedimentation(沉积) and damage of a breach(决口)are problems, too.(他们说,重庆和其他几十个沿江城市将把大量废物排入水库,这可能对人、鱼和其他依赖河流的生物造成伤害。泥沙淤积和决口破坏也是问题。)”可知,科学家担心废物、沉积和决口问题。故选D。
【55题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“The Three Gorges Dam could be considered, when it is finished in 2009, a new eighth wonder of the world as to the size alone.(当三峡大坝于2009年完工时,仅就其规模而言,就可以被认为是新的世界第八大奇迹)”可知,造大坝的时间长是因为工程规模大,而不是为了验证其安全性和强度。
59. What does the underlined word in paragraph 4 mean? (no more than 1 word)
60. What kind of animal do you like best? And why? (no more than 20 words)
56. Because dishonesty often helps them survive. ##To help them survive.
57. It pretends to have a broken wing and leads the predator away. ##It leads the predator away by pretending to have a broken wing.
58. Their adoptive parents.
59. Dishonest.
60. I like dogs best because they are clever and friendly.
Because dishonesty often helps them survive. /To help them survive。
It pretends to have a broken wing. The predator follows the "hurt" adult, leaving the baby birds safe in the nest.(怎么做呢?它假装翅膀断了,捕食者就会跟随“受伤”的成年鸟,雏鸟便安全地留在巢中)”可知,plover(千鸟)通过假装受伤将捕食者带离鸟巢以保护雏鸟。故答案为It pretends to have a broken wing and leads the predator away. /It leads the predator away by pretending to have a broken wing。
根据第三段最后一句“When the baby birds come out, their adoptive parents feed them.(当雏鸟孵出来时,它们的养父母会喂它们)”可知,杜鹃的雏鸟是由养父母喂养的。故答案为Their adoptive parents。
根据第五段第一句“Chimps are dishonest in other ways, too.(黑猩猩在其他方面也不诚实)”及第四段列举的不诚实行为的事例可知,划线词“sneaky”与“dishonest”同义。
