“I must tell you the story about what really happened to Frédéric Chopin’s heart.”
“This first Lily, her mother was the housekeeper for the great pianist and composer Frédéric Chopin, here in Paris. He had given Lily’s mother a job and a place to live when they hadn’t had anywhere to go, after Lily’s father died.”
Grandma continues, “Thousands of people came to Chopin’s funeral (葬礼), held here in Paris. Many did not know him. To them, he was a world-famous musician. To Lily and her mother, he was someone who had shown kindness then they most needed it. They were sad he had died, but beauty of the music comforted them. Chopin’s own Funeral March and Mozart’s Requiem were both part of funeral.
“Did you know that dirt from Poland was buried with Frédéric Chopin’s body? And do you know why?” Grandma asks.
“I know he was from Poland,” I say.
“Yes, he left when he was a young man. Someone gave him the dirt as a gift when he left, and he kept it with him the rest of his life. He always missed Poland, but he never went home again. Russia took control of Poland and Chopin could not return. However, it was his dying wish that his heart go back to his homeland,” Grandmother says.
“But Grandmother, I know he was buried here, in Paris,” I say.
“True, his body is here, buried (埋葬) with the Polish dirt. But his heart is not here. His heart was taken back to Poland, as he wished.”
“Ludwike, Chopin’s older sister came from Poland to Paris to help care for him in the final weeks of his life. Ludwika promised she would get his heart back to Poland, but it was too dangerous for her to do herself. After the funeral, she asked Lily for help. Lily was very afraid because she knew this would be a dangerous trip.
“We cannot repay his kindness, but we would like to try,” said Lily. She decided to help Ludwika make Frédéric's dying wish come true.
And it was Lily, a fourteen-year-old girl, who risked her life to take his heart to Poland.

A designer is a person who has ideas. But that’s not all. A designer plans how to make those ideas happen. A set of steps should be followed.
Step One is defining (界定) a problem or need. A theater puts on a show. Actors wearing costumes act on a lighted stage. Set designers design the stage sets. Lighting designers decide what lights to use. Costume designers choose clothes for the actors to wear. Together they form the design team. They share the same need, which is making the show happen.
Step Two is defining a successful result. The desired result is different for different kinds of designers. A fashion designer designs clothing styles. Because stores need people to keep buying, fashion designers need to design clothes that people will buy. The clothes should be different from older clothes.
Step Three is to describe the situation as it is now. A landscape designer plans outdoor areas. The designer looks carefully at the piece of land. Is it flat or hilly? What kind of soil does it have? What plants grow well in that soil? How do people want to use this land? The designer uses all this information in planning.
Step Four is to understand the user. The designer needs to know who will use the product. Software designers write computer programs. They think about the user sitting in front of the screen.
Step Five is to make a detailed plan. Architects design buildings. They plan the size and shape of each room, and decide what materials to use. All the details are on a drawing called a blueprint. The builders will follow this blueprint. The building will be exactly like the plan.
Last but not least, designers should work with other people to turn the design into the real thing. Fashion designers need people to sew the clothes. Landscape designers need workers to plant the plants.
Designers are artists, scientists, and inventors. They work in the present, but they are planners for the future.
1.How many steps should the designer take to make his/her ideas happen?
2.How does the design team make the show happen on the stage in Paragraph 2?
3.Who should the designers try to understand?
4.What drawing is a new house built based on?
5.What’s a proper title for this passage?

Sally loved cars more than anything else. This spring she thought of building a go-kart (卡丁车) to enter for the Go-Go Race, so she asked her dad for help.
“Well,” he said, “how about designing a go-kart after you do some research first?”
A week later, Sally brought her notes and drawings to Dad. She named her go-kart “Blue Lightning”. Dad looked over her work, thinking. “Well, that’s interesting,” he said. “Have a try. Just build Blue Lightning as you’ve designed.”
After three weekends of hard work, Sally turned her design into a real, working go-kart and painted it light blue. Dad asked her to take it for a test drive. Sally agreed.
After she did that, Sally drove back to Dad. “Well,” she said, “now I know why you wanted me to have a test drive.”
“Oh, do you?” he said, “please share.”
“When I drove fast, there was a lot of push back,” she said. “I think it’s because of the lightning bolt (闪电) shape.”
“Very good!” Dad said.
“So, why didn’t you tell me about that problem in the first place?” Sally asked.
Dad laughed. “Where’s the fun in that? If you give a man a fish, he’ll eat it for a day. But if you teach a man to fish, he’ll eat for a lifetime.”
Sally said, “I see. Anyway, designing is half the fun and the other half is putting the design into practice!”
Dad smiled. “Good. Sometimes, learning happens during the process. Next you can go on trying although you’ll make mistakes along the way.”
That encouraged Sally and she worked even harder. When she showed Dad her new go-kart, he nodded with pride.
Finally came the race. Sally wasn’t worried about whether she would win. In her mind, she had already won, by building something better than ever before.
1.Why did Sally think of building a go-kart?
2.What did Sally’s dad ask her to do after she built the go-kart?
3.According to Sally, what was the fun during building a go-kart?
4.How did Sally’s father feel when he saw Sally’s new go-kart?
5.What do you learn from the passage?

“All grown-ups were once children but only few of them remember it.” It’s a thoughtful sentence from a famous book, The Little Prince. The book first came out in 1943 and it was written by the French writer, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry (1900-1944).
The main character lives on the planet B612 alone. He leaves his star to travel and meets different kinds of people from other planets such as the King, the drunk, the businessman and so on. During the travel, the young prince discovers that people all look for happiness but they often fail because of their so-called “business”. In the real life, we are often busy with our study and work just like a walking dead body. We grew up and threw away a lot of memories, but thanks to this book we can look back what we have forgotten.
Though it is a children’s book, it’s also written for teenagers and adults. People of all ages can read this book and have their own understanding of it. The story’s true meaning is between the lines said by the fox: “One sees clearly only with the heart. What is important is invisible to the eyes.” Other key messages are also explained by the fox, such as: “You become responsible forever for what you have tamed (驯服).” The fox’s messages are unquestionably the book’s most famous ideas because they deal with human relationships.
It is a book about life and love, and The Little Prince can make people feel warm and fresh.

2.What does the young prince discover during the travel?

Unluckily, the Nautilus hit a reef and stopped. It was not damaged, but it was stuck. Captain Nemo, however, was not worried. He looked at his charts. “In four days, there will be a high tide that will lift the Nautilus off the reef,” he told me. “We will wait for it.”
Ned wanted to go onto the island and catch some animals to eat. To our surprise, Captain Nemo agreed to put us on land for a short time. We were allowed to use the dinghy. Captain Nemo did not come with us. We went alone.
Ned was very excited. “We are going to eat meat!” he said. Half an hour of rowing brought us to the island. It was wonderful to walk on land again. Ned found some coconuts and drank the milk at once. Then we walked into the forest and found some breadfruit trees. Ned cooked some of the breadfruit, which tasted just like real bread. We found fruits like bananas and mangoes. Ned still wanted some meat, but it was time to go back to the Nautilus. We brought the food that we had found back with us.
We returned to the island the next day and hunted birds. Ned shot two pigeons, a wild pig and several smaller animals like rabbits. We sat near the boat to cook and eat them, but we were suddenly attacked by about 100 savages. They followed us into the water as we rowed away, but they could not catch us. Back on the Nautilus, I found Captain Nemo who was playing the piano and told him about the savages. “You should not be surprised that there are savages on land, Dr. Aronnax,” he said. “They may try to come onto the Nautilus,” I said. “We have nothing to fear,” he replied.
He turned back to his piano. I went back outside. It was dark, and I could see fires on the beach. The savages were still there.

2.How did they feel when Captain Nemo agreed to put them on land?
3.How long did it take them to row to the island?

What can you think of when talking about trains? In most people’s eyes they are just a means (方式) of transportation and journeys on trains are usually boring. However, a different train has caught lots of attention of netizens (网民) these days. It’s the No. 5609/5610 train in Southwest China. It is a slow train which runs between Chongqing and Xiushan county (县).
Compared (比较) with common trains, the No. 5609/5610 train has its own study rooms. In some carriages (车厢), some seats have been removed. Instead, many desks and chairs are fixed next to the windows for passengers (乘客) in need. What’s more, Chinese characters (汉字) “Yu Yue” can be seen on the train, which mean “travelling and reading happily”.
In fact, there are also some other trains that have been turned into slow trains with study rooms, including Train No. 5619/5620 and Train No. 5633/5634 which run along the Chengdu-Kunming Railway. Students from nearby schools often take the trains between school and home. They consider the trains as their school buses, and many of them use travel time to complete their homework.
Besides trains with study rooms, the No. Z150 train with a book bar has also been welcomed by college students. The train runs between Guiyang and Beijing. There are nearly 400 universities and colleges in the cities along the line. Since 2015, the train’s dining car has been open for free at night to provide students with a library, free tea and other services. I didn’t stop running until I arrived at the bottom of a hill. I heard some stones falling down the hillside and when I looked up I saw something jump behind a tree. The creature moved quickly from tree to tree. It was getting closer to me. It was a man! I felt afraid but then I remembered that I had a pistol and I felt brave again. Suddenly the man came forward, and fell on his knees asking for mercy.
“Who are you?” I asked.
“I am poor Ben Gunn,” he answered. “I was left alone on this island three years ago.”
He was a white man like myself, with very sunburnt skin. He wore pieces of old clothes to cover his body.
“Is that Flint’s ship, Jim?” he asked.
“No, Flint’s dead,” I answered. “But some of his crew are here, unfortunately.”
“Is there a man with one leg?” he gasped.
“Silver?” I asked. “Yes, he’s the cook and their leader.”
I then explained the whole situation to him, and he listened carefully.
“You’re a good boy, Jim,” he said. “I will help you and your captain if you help me to get home, and give me a share of the money because there’s lots of money for everyone. I’m rich! Rich! When Scrooge woke up, it was very dark. He suddenly remembered a ghost would come at one o’clock and decided to stay awake. He waited and waited until at last he heard the clock strike One.
A light flashed and the bed curtains flew open. Scrooge sat up and found himself face to face with a ghost.
It looked like not only a child but also an old man. It had long white hair but a smooth face. It was dressed in a white robe, light shone from its head, and it held a large cap under one arm.
“Are you the Ghost that Marley told me about?” asked Scrooge.
“I am!” it replied.
“Who are you?” Scrooge asked.
“I come to help you,” said the Ghost. “Now come with me.”
When the Ghost moved toward the window, Scrooge was afraid. “I’m a mortal (凡人)—I’ll fall.” The Ghost laid its hand on Scrooge’s heart and said, “You won’t fall.”
They passed through the wall and found themselves on a country road. The fog was gone—it was now a clear, cold winter day with snow everywhere.
“Heavens,” cried Scrooge. “This is where I grew up.” They walked along while Scrooge recognized every tree and gate. Boys on ponies rode toward them, calling “Merry Christmas” happily to one another.
“They’re only shadows,” said the Ghost. “They can’t see us.”
Scrooge knew these boys. Why did seeing them make him so happy? What did “Merry Christmas” mean to him? “What good has it ever done me?” he wondered.
“The school isn’t completely empty,” said the Ghost. “One boy remains.”
“I know,” said Scrooge, a tear in his eye.
They reached a large red-brick school building. Entering the dark hall, they found a classroom where a lonely boy read at a desk. Scrooge sat on a bench and cried when he saw himself.
After wiping his eyes, Scrooge whispered: “I wish…but it’s too late now.”
“What’s wrong?” asked the Ghost.
“Nothing,” said Scrooge. “There was a boy singing a Christmas carol at my door last night, but I shouted him away. I would like to give him some money. That’s all.”
The Ghost smiled thoughtfully, “Let’s see another Christmas.”
1.Why did Scrooge stay awake at night?
2.What was the Ghost like?
3.Where did the Ghost bring Scrooge first after they passed through the wall?
4.Who was “a lonely boy”?
5.Do you think the Ghost was helping Scrooge? Why or why not?

Another rich man in Venice was Shylock. He became rich by lending money to others and making them pay interest (利息). While Antonio thought it wrong to make people pay interest. He said the rich should help the poor. Shylock was very angry about this because many people went to borrow money from Antonio instead of borrowing from him. This meant that Shylock earned less money.
When Bassanio visited Shylock, he asked Shylock to lend him three thousand gold coins and said he would pay it back in three months. “How do I know you can pay it back?” asked Shylock. “My friend Antonio will help me. Saturday was the day of Becky’s picnic. Becky’s mother prepared the picnic food. No adults went with the children, just some young teachers. They all met at Judge Thatcher’s house and then they went on the ferry together.
They played games at the wooded place where the ferry stopped. Then there was the picnic meal, and finally a visit to some nearby caves. It was quite late when they started back towards the town.
Huck was already on duty watching the tavern. He heard the door closing softly. Two men walked past him, and one had something under his arm. It must be the box! It was too late to call Tom now, so Huck decided to follow them. They went up Cardiff Hill and down the other side into the dark trees. Then they stopped. Huck heard Indian Joe’s voice just in front of him.
‘Widow Douglas has got guests — there are lights on!’
‘Let’s go back,’ said the other man.
‘Go back? I’m going to leave this country forever and this is my last chance to get my revenge (报仇) on her. I’m not interested in her money — you can have it. But her husband jailed me many times for being homeless and whipped me in front of the whole town. He’s dead, but I’ll take revenge on her!’
‘Let’s start now!’
“No, we must wait until the guests have gone and the lights are out.”
Huck listened in horror. Then he walked backwards very carefully until he was a good distance from the two men. Then he ran down the hill until he reached the Welshman’s house. He banged (猛敲) on the door. The old man put his head out of the window.
“What’s all that noise? What do you want?”
‘Let me in — quickly! I’ll tell you everything!’ The door opened and Huck told his story. Three minutes later the old man and his sons were up the hill walking quietly. After a silence there was a sudden explosion of guns and a cry. Huck ran back down the hill as fast as he could.

Have you learned about axial symmetry in math? If a city shows axial symmetry, its central axis is the key line. In July, 2024, the “Beijing Central Axis: A Building Ensemble Exhibiting the Ideal Order of the Chinese Capital” was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List, becoming China’s 59th World Heritage Site.
The Beijing Central Axis has a group of buildings and historical sites that shape Beijing’s old city. Running 7.8 kilometers from north to south in central Beijing, this area includes 15 key parts, such as the Bell and Drum Towers in the north and Yongdingmen Gate in the south.
The building of the Beijing Central Axis began in the 13th century and took shape in the 16th century. According to Lyu Zhou, director of the National Heritage Center at Tsinghua University, this idea of city planning dates back to the Kaogongji, written before 221 BC. This book explains how to plan a capital city.
The Beijing Central Axis shows traditional Chinese ideas of “zhong (中)” and “he (和)”. For example, the royal palace was placed at the center, with other important buildings placed around it to create a sense of harmony.
“Beijing’s unique and great order is created by this central axis,” said Liang Sicheng (1901-1972), a famous Chinese architect.

The book I would like to talk about is The Merchant of Venice. The book is a dramatic work by Shakespeare, a famous English writer in the 16th century. It talks about something happening between merchants in Venice. The main characters are Bassanio, Portia, Shylock and Antonio.
The drama begins with Antonio, who helps Bassanio borrow money from Shylock, and then brings out other stories. Bassanio is a poor merchant. He needs money to follow his dream to marry Portia—a very beautiful and rich lady. He first wants to borrow money from his friend Antonio, also a merchant in Venice. Antonio borrows the money from a Jewish rich merchant Shylock. Antonio does much harm to Shylock before because Antonio really hates Jewish. Shylock is a little mean and loves money very much. He always gets interest from the people who borrow money from him. Antonio promises he will pay the money back in three months, or Shylock will be allowed to cut out 1 pound of flesh out of Antonio’s body.
Bassanio successfully wins the love of Portia but soon realizes his friend can not pay the money back to Shylock on time. Bassanio returns to Venice as fast as he can and attends a trial (审讯). The reason why Antonio isn’t able to pay is because his ships are caught in storm. Portia, dressing up as a young judge, claims (声称) that the words “l pound of flesh” not “l pound of flesh and blood”. She says that Shylock is only allowed to remove flesh, but not any blood, which is impossible. Thus, she helps make Antonio safe and make Shylock fail. At the same time. Shylock loses most of his money. At the end, Bassanio and Portia have a happy ending.

阅读短文,回答下面5个问题。(每题答案不超过6个词)
【答案】1.Six./6. 2.By sharing the same need./They share the same need. 3.The user(s). 4.The blueprint. 5.How to Be a Designer/Designers /The Steps/Ways to Be a Designer/Designers/How Designers Design (围绕主题,言之有理即可)
【导语】本文介绍了设计师的角色及其将创意变为现实所需遵循的一系列步骤。
1.根据“Step Five”和“Last but not least”可知,设计师要把他的想法实现有六步。故填Six./6.

3.根据“Step Four is to understand the user. The designer needs to know who will use the product.”可知,设计师要理解用户。故填The user(s).
4.根据“Architects design buildings. They plan the size and shape of each room, and decide what materials to use. All the details are on a drawing called a blueprint.”可知,建筑师设计建筑,他们规划每个房间的大小和形状,并决定使用什么材料,所有的细节都在蓝图上。即新房的建造是依据蓝图。故填The blueprint.
5.通读全文可知,本文介绍了设计师的角色及其将创意变为现实所需遵循的一系列步骤;因此可拟标题为“如何成为一名设计师”/“成为设计师的步骤”/“设计师是如何设计的”。故填How to Be a Designer/Designers /The Steps/Ways to Be a Designer/Designers/How Designers Design。
阅读短文,回答下面5个问题。(每题答案不超过10个单词)

He said the rich should help the poor. Shylock was very angry about this because many people went to borrow money from Antonio instead of borrowing from him. This meant that Shylock earned less money.
When Bassanio visited Shylock, he asked Shylock to lend him three thousand gold coins and said he would pay it back in three months. “How do I know you can pay it back?” asked Shylock. “My friend Antonio will help me. If I do not pay you in three months, he will do it for me,” Bassanio said. Shylock turned to smile. Perhaps this would be a chance.

“Why not?”
“Oh nothing! Just the noises in the attic, from midnight until morning.”
