You know who gets them right? BLUETOOTH In his futuristic 1953 novel Fahrenheit 451, Ray Bradbury anticipated Bluetooth, describing wireless earphones that allowed for "an electronic ocean of sound, of music and talk" to be transferred through the air. Imagine how thrilled he would have been with a Bluetooth toaster! That was the idea behind Griffin's Connected Toaster, which warned you via smartphone when your toast was done. At $ 100, this baby cost a lot of bread, which may be why it was discontinued just two years after launch. SMART WATCH The Apple Watch lets you chat, play games, and watch videos on a device fastened to your wrist. Cool, huh? The Jetsons thought so… in 1962 — when Steve Jobs was still in second grade! WI-FI Nikola Tesla called it! In 1909, the famous electrical engineer told the New York Times, "It will soon be possible to send wireless messages all over the world so simply that any individual can carry and operate his own equipment." No doubt he was thinking of the Kérastase Hair Coach brush, which measured brushing speed and employed a micro-phone to listen to your hair, all to compute an overall hair-quality score sent to your smartphone. (Alas, it too is gone.) GPS Writer Arthur C. Clarke (2001: A Space Odyssey) saw a world in which no one got lost. In 1956,he wrote that satellites “could make possible a position-finding grid (铁网) whereby anyone could locate himself by means of a couple of dials on an instrument about the size of a watch.” Clarke didn't mention that his system might also track another person, such as a criminal. Last year, the New York City police arrested a robber who was wearing a GPS ankle monitor — because he was still on probation (缓刑) for a prior crime. 21. Which of the predictions is the earliest? A. BLUETOOTH. B. SMART WATCH, C. WI-FI. D. GPS. 22. Why did Griffin's Connected Toaster disappear? A. Too expensive. B. Out of date. C. A little awkward D. Energy-consuming. 23. What was Clarke’s prediction? A. A GPS ankle monitor. B. A robber-arresting instrument. C. A watch that could see the world. D. An instrument that could locate a person. C 22. A 23. 由文章第二段第一句“In his futuristic 1953 novel Fahrenheit 451, Ray Bradbury anticipated Bluetooth, describing wireless earphones that allowed for "an electronic ocean of sound, of music and talk" to be transferred through the air.(雷·布拉德伯里在1953年出版的科幻小说《华氏451度》中预言了蓝牙,描述了无线耳机可以通过空气传输“声音、音乐和对话的电子海洋”)”可知,对蓝牙的预测是在1953年;由文章第三段第二句“The Jetsons thought so… in 1962 — when Steve Jobs was still in second grade! (杰森一家是这么认为的……在1962年——当时史蒂夫·乔布斯还在上二年级!)”可知,对智能手表的预测是在1962年;由文章第四段第二句“In 1909, the famous electrical engineer told the New York Times, "It will soon be possible to send wireless messages all over the world so simply that any individual can carry and operate his own equipment." (1909年,这位著名的电气工程师在接受《纽约时报》采访时表示:“不久以后,将无线信息发送到世界各地将成为可能,这种方式非常简单,任何人都可以携带并操作自己的设备。”)”可知,对无线网的预测是在1909年;由文章第五段第二句“In 1956,he wrote that satellites “could make possible a position-finding grid (铁网) whereby anyone could locate himself by means of a couple of dials on an instrument about the size of a watch.”(1956年,他写道,卫星“可以使一个定位网格成为可能,任何人都可以通过一个手表大小的仪器上的两个刻度盘来确定自己的位置”)”可知,对GPS的预测是在1956年。 根据第二段最后一句“At $ 100, this baby cost a lot of bread, which may be why it was discontinued just two years after launch.(这款售价100美元的“宝宝”要花很多面包,这可能就是为什么它在推出两年后就停产了)”可知,导致格里芬的联网烤面包机消失的原因是它太贵了。故选A项。 根据文章第五段第二句“In 1956, he wrote that satellites “could make possible a position-finding grid (铁网) whereby anyone could locate himself by means of a couple of dials on an instrument about the size of a watch.””(1956年,他写道,卫星“可以使一个定位网格成为可能,任何人都可以通过一个手表大小的仪器上的两个刻度盘来确定自己的位置”)”可知,Clarke的预测是能够定位一个人位置的仪器。故选D项。 Match the pictures with the text. A. This film is set in the 22nd century. Earth is suffering a severe energy crisis. Scientists have found another planet called Pandora, which is inhabited by the Na’vi. It is rich in natural resources, yet its atmosphere is poisonous to humans. To explore Pandora and exploit its resources, scientists use a new technology, creating “avatars” operated by genetically matched humans. B. This film is set in the year 2045, when the real world is a harsh place. Many people escape reality by spending their days in a virtual reality universe called OASIS, where one can go anywhere, do anything or be anyone. C. In this film, humans abandon Earth because there is too much rubbish on it, leaving behind some robots to do the cleaning up. Over time, the robots break down one by one, until WALL·E is the only robot left working on Earth. One day, he meets another robot from space which has returned to Earth. In the end, they find a way to save the planet. D. In this film, Earth is coming to an end through disasters, famines and droughts. A team of astronauts board a spaceship, travelling through a newly discovered wormhole to find another planet that may have the right environment for humans to settle. ______24______  ______25______  ______26______  ______27______ 【答案】24. Methane is a greenhouse gas that is responsible for about a quarter of human-caused global warming. Some trees growing in waterlogged soils can release methane that is generated underground. But we also know that methane-eating microbes known as methanotrophs live on tree bark. Methanotrophs consume methane as their source of carbon and chemical energy, producing substances such as carbon dioxide (CO2) and organic compounds. To investigate this interplay, Vincent Gauci at the University of Birmingham, UK, and his colleagues took measurements from trees growing in well-drained soils around the world, determining the methane exchange between the atmosphere and the tree bark. They found that, while most trees release small amounts of methane at soil level, further up the trunk, the exchange changes and trees start absorbing atmospheric methane. The CO2 the methanotrophs produce is a much less strong greenhouse gas than methane. “There’s great benefit in that transformation to CO2,” he says. The findings demonstrate that methanotrophs are removing methane from the atmosphere over a large range, across temperate, boreal and tropical (热带的) environments. Trees growing in tropical locations are about 12 percent better for the climate, once this methane-absorbing effect is factored in, while trees in temperate locations are about 7 percent better. In total, trees could be absorbing between 24 million and 50 million tonnes of methane from the atmosphere each year, similar to the volume absorbed by the world’s soils. “Existing forests are that much more important than we thought, and we should preserve them,” says Gauci. 28. What percentage of human-caused global warming is due to methane? A. 12%. B. 7%. C. About 25%. D. About 50%. 29. What is the main function of methanotrophs according to the text? A. To preserve trees. B. To release methane. C. To produce carbon dioxide. D. To consume methane and produce substances. 30. What can be inferred from Gauci’s statement in paragraph 4? A. Trees absorb more methane annually than global soils. B. Transforming methane into CO2 benefits the climate. C. CO2 is the main driver of global warming. D. CO2 is more harmful than methane. 31. What is the best title for the text? A. The Role of Methane in Global Warming B. The Importance of Forests for the Environment C. Trees: Methane Absorbers and Climate Protectors D. Methanotrophs: The Hidden Heroes of the Climate 【答案】28. C 29. D 30. B 31. Methanotrophs consume methane as their source of carbon and chemical energy, producing substances such as carbon dioxide(CO2)and organic compounds.(但我们也了解到,有一种被称为“甲烷分解菌”的微生物会栖息在树皮上。 根据第四段“They found that, while most trees release small amounts of methane at soil level, further up the trunk, the exchange changes and trees start absorbing atmospheric methane. The CO2 the methanotrophs produce is a much less strong greenhouse gas than methane. “There’s great benefit in that transformation to CO2,” he says.(他们发现,虽然大多数树木在土壤层会释放少量甲烷,但在树干较高部位,这种交换情况会发生变化,树木开始吸收大气中的甲烷。甲烷氧化菌产生的二氧化碳是一种强度远低于甲烷的温室气体。他说:“这种转化为二氧化碳的过程具有很大的益处。”)”可知,将甲烷转化为二氧化碳对气候有益。故选B。 【31题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第一段“Microbes (微生物) in the bark of trees are absorbing methane (甲烷) from the air, adding to the climate benefits that we know trees give us.(树木树皮中的微生物正在从空气中吸收甲烷,这进一步增强了我们所熟知的树木带来的气候改善作用)”结合文章主要讨论了树木通过树皮上的甲烷氧化菌吸收甲烷,对气候产生积极影响。 C。 C Fabian Mdluli grew up in Acornhoek, a rural town that borders Greater Kruger National Park. The park, home to lions, elephants, rhinos, and over 147 animal species, draws nearly two million visitors yearly. Like many young people living near one of South Africa’s 1,690 protected areas, however, 23-year-old Mdluli had never seen the country’s wildlife in person. Last year, Fabian Mdluli became the first fully sponsored student in an initiative by Too Wild Productions to train South Africa’s next generation of wildlife filmmakers. Founded by zoologist-turned TV presenter Lauren Arthur and filmmakers David Eastaugh, the program provides hands-on experience in the wild. During the four-week course in Timbavati Private Nature Reserve (53,000 hectares, western Kruger), students develop technical skills while learning ethical storytelling to drive positive change. Mdluli describes it as transformational. “It helped me discover my passion — editing. It’s all about constructing the story.” While Africa is a primary setting for many internationally acclaimed (受到称赞的) wildlife films, African voices remain scanty behind the camera. A 2022 report revealed that while 25% of film award submissions featured African wildlife, only 7% were actually made in Africa by Africans. A recent UNESCO report confirmed that the film and audiovisual sector in Africa generated just 20 billion. At the same time, youth unemployment stands at more than 65% in rural communities within the Greater Kruger area, where poverty and unemployment are driving factors behind environmental challenges such as human-wildlife conflict. “We’ve seen these challenges with our own eyes and, while we don’t think we can solve these problems alone, we want to ensure those who live closest to these ecosystems have the tools, knowledge and opportunity to tell their own stories,” says Arthur. While Mdluli has joined Too Wild as a junior editor, he’s eager to take on new opportunities in the industry. Arthur says they’ ll support him, as well as their current sponsored students, as much as they can. “Our biggest goal is to have production companies coming to us asking, ‘Hey, who are your local filmmakers? We want to hire them,’” says Arthur. 32. What can we know about young people near the protected areas? A. They benefit from wildlife tourism. B. They all receive filmmaking training. C. They can visit national parks regularly. D. They have little contact with wildlife. 33. What is the feature of Too Wild Productions? A. It offers degree certificates. B. It provides practical field training. C. It focuses on studio production. D. It admits international filmmakers. 34. What does the underlined word “scanty” in paragraph 3 probably mean? A. Active. B. Weak. C. Confident. D. Unique. 35. What is Arthur’s main expectation for the initiative? A. To build a lasting local talent pool. B. To produce popular wildlife films. C. To encourage youths to work independently. D. To arouse youths’ interest in the film industry. D 33. B 34. B 35. 根据第一段中“Like many young people living near one of South Africa’s 1,690 protected areas, however, 23-year-old Mdluli had never seen the country’s wildlife in person. 根据第二段中“Last year, Fabian Mdluli became the first fully sponsored student in an initiative by Too Wild Productions to train South Africa’s next generation of wildlife filmmakers. Founded by zoologist-turned TV presenter Lauren Arthur and filmmakers David Eastaugh, the program provides hands-on experience in the wild. 根据第三段中“While Africa is a primary setting for many internationally acclaimed (受到称赞的) wildlife films, African voices remain scanty behind the camera. (尽管非洲是许多国际知名野生动物电影的主要取景地,但在镜头背后,非洲人的声音仍然scanty)”和“A 2022 report revealed that while 25% of film award submissions featured African wildlife, only 7% were actually made in Africa by Africans. 根据最后一段中“Our biggest goal is to have production companies coming to us asking, ‘Hey, who are your local filmmakers? We want to hire them,’” says Arthur. 故选A项。 D What a privilege it is when the harvest of our gardening labors can be extended to those in need of a helping hand. Enter Jean Trevino, whose story of decided caring and heartfelt sharing sets an example of just how important and meaningful the voluntary work of our gardener can be. For those who don’t yet know Jean, she is the Chair of the Vegetable Garden. She and her team devote themselves to planting and maintaining some of the most productive and beautiful herbs and vegetables. In fact, the abundant amount of produce led Jean to search for a shop where those who otherwise might not have access to fresh vegetables could enjoy their healthful benefits. Jean’s deliveries to Trini Market began in November 2017. Since that time, almost 1,900 pounds of produce, with an estimated retail value $2,800, has been donated to the food bank. And, the variety of produce has been wide! Between January and March of this year, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, turnips, greens, citrus and herbs have all been in the mix. In addition to the bounties from the gardener’s vegetable beds, individual gardeners have made contributions from their personal gardens, as well. There is a touching story behind Jean’s behavior, one that speaks to her mindfulness of the needs of others and her heartfelt determination to be of service. Many years ago, she lived in a war zone in Africa where she witnessed starvation and poverty. Jean describes how one could sit at an outdoor restaurant and see hungry eyes peering through the bushes in the distance. “I couldn’t eat,” Jean says. “I would ask to have my meal packaged and I carefully passed it to those in need. I saw what it was to be so in want, and to this day I can’t bear to see food go to waste.” 36. Why does Jean Trevino run the Vegetable Garden? A. To make a living by gardening. B. What happened to the laser-sharp (激光般锐利的) focus you once enjoyed? ____40____ Over time, it accumulates wear and tear that directly impacts processing. The good news is, this attentional drift can be managed with the following approaches. Cultivate (培养) a disciplined mindfulness practice. ____41____ And practicing it has been shown to reshape the brain. Kim Willment, a neuropsychologist with Brigham and Women’s Hospital, recommends sitting still for a few minutes each day, closing your eyes, and focusing on your breathing as well as the sounds and sensations around you. ____42____ Such exercises are generally designed to improve your attention. However, evidence for their effectiveness has been mixed. “The goal of playing these is not to get better at them, but to get better in the cognitive activities of everyday life,” Willment says. “But there is evidence that a person’s ability to pay attention can be improved by progressively pushing the person to higher levels of performance. So if you reach a certain level of sustained attention, pushing it to the next level can help improve it, and this may translate to everyday life.” Focus on a healthy lifestyle. This approach centers on two aspects: physical activity and rest. There is a direct link between exercise and cognitive ability, especially attention. When you exercise, you increase the availability of brain chemicals that promote new brain connections and reduce stress. ____43____ At the same time, you clear out injury-causing proteins. He’d have to go home in thirty minutes. He finished another round of the park and was ready to leave when the sight of an elderly lady stopped him in his tracks. She was struggling up the park stairs, and just as she neared the top, she lost her footing and fell back down, rolling awkwardly. “Ma’am!” Adam ran over to the woman quickly. “Are you OK?” “I’m fine; it was just a little fall,” she replied, but Adam worried she wasn’t fine. He offered to call the ambulance, but she refused. “Please let me take you to a nearby clinic on my motorcycle, ” he said, offering his arm to her, and she agreed. They began to chat on their way to the clinic, and the woman introduced herself as Alice. She said she had lost her husband, Frank, for a few years. Her husband was in a business that helped families move. After he passed away, his truck was parked in the garage. Adam knew how it felt to lose a loved one and he opened up to Alice about his wife, too. As they reached the clinic, the doctor there told Alice that she was fine. Then Adam sent the woman home. Match the pictures with the text. ______24______  ______25______  ______26______  ______27______ B Microbes (微生物) in the bark of trees are absorbing methane (甲烷) from the air, adding to the climate benefits that we know trees give us. A The Role of Methane in Global Warming B. The Importance of Forests for the Environment C. Trees: Methane Absorbers and Climate Protectors D. Methanotrophs: The Hidden Heroes of the Climate C Fabian Mdluli grew up in Acornhoek, a rural town that borders Greater Kruger National Park. D What a privilege it is when the harvest of our gardening labors can be extended to those in need of a helping hand. B. To provide free vegetables for the needy. C. To share gardening experience with others. D. To raise public awareness of homelessness. 37. What is the main idea of paragraph 3? A. Jean’s donations to the food bank. B. Great demand in Trini Market. C. Various vegetables in Jean’s garden. D. Great success of Jean’s garden. 38. Where did Jean Trevino’s mindfulness of the needs of others come from? A. Her experience of running a restaurant. B. Her experience of starvation and poverty. C. Her witness to much food going to waste. D. Her witness to others’ sufferings in Africa. 39. Which of the following best describes Jean Trevino? A. Rich and modest. B. Optimistic and friendly. C. Caring and generous D. Determined and hard-working. You’re trying to concentrate, but your mind is wandering or you’re easily distracted. You have the power to shape your mental sharpness. ____44____ Starting small ensures you won’t feel overwhelmed. This consistent practice builds cognitive resilience over time. Trust me. Your future focus will thank you for the investment today. A. Seek expert guidance and support. B. Engage in cognitive training games. C. Mindfulness is about focusing attention on the present moment. D. And when you sleep, you reduce harmful stress chemicals in the brain. E. You can think of the brain like a computer that slows down with use. F. However, mindfulness has regained enormous popularity in recent years. G. You’d better start by choosing one of these strategies to try this week. Recently, at a doctor’s appointment, I had to schedule a follow-up.
