When Zhou Longshan started filming birds 10 years ago at Baiyangdian Lake, a major wetland in northern China, he just wanted to record his favorite species — egrets (白鹭). In the following years, he became a bird-watcher, a volunteer ranger at the lake, a photographer documenting over 110 bird species and an educator introducing bird-related information among students.
“Sharing bird-protection knowledge with children can make them feel the beauty of their hometown and the importance of birds, and help them form the habit of protecting birds from an early age,” he says.
Growing up near Baiyangdian Lake, Zhou has fond childhood memories associated with the wetland. “When I was a child, the water in Baiyangdian was clear. The fish and plants in the water could be seen clearly,” he says, “I often caught fish with my friends, went boating and drank the lake water when I was thirsty.”
Between the 1960s and 1980s, however, Baiyangdian suffered severely from industrial pollution. Chemicals carried by waste water poisoned the water and lake beds, killing the water life. In the 1990s, the lake nearly dried up due to climate change.
The local authorities took a range of measures to deal with the situation. Over time, Zhou’s interest in birds continued to grow. To monitor birds, Zhou would ride a bike to Baiyangdian almost every day whatever challenges he met. He would record the birds appearing at the lake, along with their locations, where they fed and when they migrated, thus providing reference data for the local natural resources bureau (局). Over the years, he has taken more than 100,000 pictures of the birds at Baiyangdian.
Tian Yongchang, who works at the bureau, says, “The birds at Baiyangdian are not only increasing in terms of population but also in terms of species. The appearance of rare birds reflects that the diversity and stability of Baiyangdian’s ecosystem have improved significantly.” Additionally, the water quality in Baiyangdian has improved.
Zhou will retire next month. “I will continue watching over the lake and photographing the birds to contribute to the protection of birds in my hometown,” he says.
24. Why does Zhou mention his childhood memories?
A. To warn the effects of climate change. B. To highlight the beauty of Baiyangdian.
C. To express his anger to industrial pollution. D. To show his close affection for Baiyangdian.
25. How did Zhou assist the local authorities according to paragraph 5?
A. By caring for the birds. B. By offering data he recorded.
C. By riding a bike along the lake. D. By teaching knowledge about birds.
26. What can be inferred from Tian Yongchang’s words?
A. Baiyangdian’s ecosystem is worsening.
B. The efforts to protect Baiyangdian pay off.
C. Rare birds of Baiyangdian increase significantly.
D. The water quality of Baiyangdian has recovered.
27. Which words can best describe Zhou Longshan?
A. Helpful and considerate. B. Energetic and honest.
C. Determined and responsible. D. Influential and confident.

The demanding process of forming our thoughts, letter by letter, on the page is becoming a relic of the past in our screen-dominated world, where typed messages have replaced handwritten letters. However, giving up handwriting may come at a significant cost.
Both handwriting and typing involve moving our hands and fingers to create words on a page. But handwriting seems to more deeply engage the brain in ways that support learning. For example, to type “tap”, your fingers don’t have to trace out the form of the letters — they just make relatively simple and similar movements. In comparison, it takes a lot more brainpower, as well as cross-talk between brain areas, to write than type. It lets you make connections between your body and what you’re seeing and hearing, which might give the mind more footholds for accessing a given concept (概念) or idea.
“When kids write letters, they’re just messy,” says Sophia Vinci-Booher, an educational neuroscientist at Vanderbilt University. As kids practice writing “A”, each form is different, and that variability helps promote their conceptual understanding of the letter. They learn to recognize letters better when seeing variable handwritten examples, compared with similar typed examples. This helps develop areas of the brain used during reading in children and adults, Vinci-Booher found. “This could be one of the ways that early experiences actually translate to long-term life outcomes,” she says.
Abandoning handwriting could mean that those skills don’t get developed as well, which could damage kids’ ability to learn down the road. “If young children are not receiving any handwriting training, which is very good brain stimulation (刺激), then their brains simply won’t reach their full potential,” says Meer, a psychologist and study co-author at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology.
28. What is the difference between handwriting and typing from the passage?
A. Typing is better for learning concepts. B. Handwriting engages more brain areas.
C. Typing fails to involve hands movements. D. Handwriting is faster for accessing ideas.
29. What can we learn from Sophia Vinci-Booher?
A. Variable handwritten letters do harm to kids’ handwriting.
B Writing “A” promotes kids’ conceptual understanding.
C. Practicing typing helps recognize letters better.
D Early handwriting practice benefits kids.
30. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. Advantages of handwriting over typing. B. Reasons for choosing handwriting.
C. A call for improving handwriting. D. Effects of giving up handwriting.
31. What is the author’s attitude towards handwriting?
A. Unclear. B. Negative. C. Favorable. D. Doubtful.

Kathy and Brandon Gunn are a couple from Michigan, and they were married in September 2007. One gift that they received on their wedding day was a box from Kathy’s great aunt Alison. On the front of the gift, it read, “Do NOT open until 1st disagreement.”
The couple had forgotten about the present for years, even though their marriage had disagreements and arguments. It wasn’t until they were thinking about getting a gift for a friend’s upcoming wedding that they remembered their one gift that was still to be opened.
“I thought back to our wedding day (nearly 9 years ago) and tried to recall the gifts that had meant the most to me,” Kathy wrote in a post on Facebook. “The funny thing? The gift that meant the very most was still sitting in a cupboard. . . unopened. All along, we assumed that the contents of that box held the key to saving a marriage—an age-old secret—unknown to us. After all, my great aunt and uncle had been married for nearly half a century.”
When Kathy and Brandon finally opened the mysterious present, what they found inside was so sweet. There was one note and some money, and addressed to Kathy. It read, “Kathy, go get a pizza, shrimp, or something you both like. Aunt Alison.” Brandon also had a note addressed to him. It read, “Brandon, go get flowers and a bottle of wine. Aunt Alison.”
“For nine years that box sat high on a shelf in various cupboards gathering dust, yet it somehow taught us about inclusion (包容), understanding and patience. Today, we decided to open that box, because I finally had a realization,” Kathy wrote in her post. “I realized that the tools for creating and maintaining a strong, healthy marriage were never within that box-they were within us.”
32. Why did aunt Alison give the couple a mysterious gift?
A. To give the couple a surprise. B. To make their marriage happy.
C. To save their terrible marriage. D. To make fun of the couple.
33. How did the couple deal with Alison’s present?
A. They gave it to a friend as a gift. B. They kept it until 1st disagreement.
C. They left it as it was for nine years. D. They opened it on their wedding day.
34. How did the couple probably feel when they saw the contents of the gift?
A. Moved. B. Shocked. C. Embarrassed. D. Disappointed.
35. What did Kathy realize was the key to a healthy marriage?
A. Wealth and health. B. Character and attitude.
C. Duty and obligation. D. Forgiveness and patience.

Overtourism Is For Real: How Can You Help?
Travel promotes understanding, expands our minds, makes us better people, and boosts local economies and communities, but the rapid growth of travel has led to overtourism in certain regions and destinations. ___36___ Certainly not. The loss of what travel offers would be unacceptable in today’s world. Here are some tips on making wise decisions to minimize pressure on the places we visit and improve our experience.
●Choose mindfully. Overvisited destinations are that way for a reason: they’re special. With so many online posts featuring the same places, it’s easy to feel like you’re missing out. Go somewhere only when the landscape, culture or food deeply draws you. ___37___
●Get creative. The best way to ease pressure on over-touristed destinations is to go somewhere else. Though overtourism is described as a problem affecting the entire world, it’s actually concentrated to a small number of extremely popular spots. That means you have tons of less-visited options to choose from. ___38___ Why not try a regional alternative or check out a popular destination’s lesser-known sights?
●___39___ Minimize impact and maximize experience by skipping major holidays or rush hour. You’ll compete with fewer tourists, save money, experience a different side of a popular place, and boost the economy when tourism is traditionally slower.
Visiting a place that others call home is a privilege (荣幸). Do your part to preserve what makes a destination special in the first place. ___40___ You may be amazed how much closer you’ll feel to the people there.
A. Visit during off-peak times.
B. So, should we stop traveling?
C. Travel for you and no one else.
D. Can overtourism be avoided then?
E. You can still find relatively undiscovered places.
F. You’ll find yourself virtually alone, or close to it.
G. Consider giving back to the communities you’re visiting.

【答案】24. D 25. B 26. B 27. C

B. Writing “A” promotes kids’ conceptual understanding.
C. Practicing typing helps recognize letters better.
D. Early handwriting practice benefits kids.
30. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. Advantages of handwriting over typing. B. Reasons for choosing handwriting.
C. A call for improving handwriting. D. Effects of giving up handwriting.
31. What is the author’s attitude towards handwriting?
A. Unclear. B. Negative. C. Favorable. D. Doubtful.
【答案】28. B 29. D 30. D 31. C

【28题详解】
细节理解题。由文章第二段中的“But handwriting seems to more deeply engage the brain in ways that support learning. For example, to type “tap”, your fingers don’t have to trace out the form of the letters — they just make relatively simple and similar movements. In comparison, it takes a lot more brainpower, as well as cross-talk between brain areas, to write than type. (但手写似乎更深入地参与大脑,以支持学习。例如,“tap”,你的手指不需要描摹字母的形状——它们只需要做相对简单和相似的动作。相比之下,写字比打字需要更多的脑力,以及大脑区域之间的交流。)”可知,手写比打字更多地调动了大脑区域。故选B。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中的“As kids practice writing “A”, each form is different, and that variability helps promote their conceptual understanding of the letter. They learn to recognize letters better when seeing variable handwritten examples, compared with similar typed examples. This helps develop areas of the brain used during reading in children and adults, Vinci-Booher found. “This could be one of the ways that early experiences actually translate to long-term life outcomes,” she says.(孩子们练习写字母“A”时,每个人的写法都各不相同,这种差异性有助于促进他们对字母的概念理解。与看到相似的打印字体相比,孩子们在看到手写变体时能更好地识别字母。这有助于发展儿童和成人在阅读时使用的大脑区域,Vinci-Booher发现。“这可能是早期经历事实上转化为长期生活结果的途径之一,”她说。)”可知,早期的字母书写练习助于发展儿童在阅读时使用的大脑区域,对孩子有益。故选D。
【30题详解】
主旨大意题。根据最后一段“Abandoning handwriting could mean that those skills don’t get developed as well, which could damage kids’ ability to learn down the road. “If young children are not receiving any handwriting training, which is very good brain stimulation (刺激), then their brains simply won’t reach their full potential,” says Meer, a psychologist and study co-author at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology.
