Every living thing needs to reproduce (繁殖). Reproducing means creating more members of your group. In order to reproduce, plants have to spread (传播) their seeds (种子) to other areas. Plants have developed all kinds of ways to do this.
The simplest way is gravity (重力). Many seeds are inside of fruit. When a piece of fruit gets too heavy, it falls from a tree to the ground. Sometimes animals will pick up the fruit and drop it in another area. That helps move the seed even farther away. Apples spread in this way.
Other plants use wind to spread their seeds. Dandelions (蒲公英) are a good example of this. Dandelion seeds are so light that when wind blows, it carries dandelion seeds to new places. Maple (枫树) seeds also use wind. Their seeds are connected with long thin leaves that look like wings. When the seed falls from the tree, its “wings” help it fly farther from the tree.
Some animals help plants spread their seeds. The animals eat the seeds. While the seed is in the animal’s body, it stays whole. When the seed leaves the animal, it’s in a new place.
Ants also help to spread seeds. Some seeds have a special smell that attracts (吸引) ants. The ants bring the seeds back to their home, which of course is underground. They only eat part of the seed. They leave the rest of the seed underground. After that, the seed can start growing.

High up on the Qinghai—Xizang Plateau, there is a wild and remote place called Hoh Xil National Nature Reserve. Something amazing is happening there. A new kind of “animal” is now walking with the Tibetan antelopes (藏羚羊). The real antelopes don’t even look twice at their new “friend”.
But this four-legged “friend” is different. It doesn’t need to eat grass or have babies. Its only job is to watch and record, and sometimes its battery needs to be changed. This is China’s first robot antelope.
The robot looks very real because it has a wonderful exoskeleton. This means it can get very close to the antelopes without scaring them. For scientists, it is very difficult to study the animals up close in this cold, high place. Now, thanks to the robot, they can watch the antelopes easily from far away.
Every year, between May and August, thousands of antelopes travel a long way to Hoh Xil. They go there to have their babies, so people call Hoh Xil the “delivery room (产房)” for the species.
The robot was built by a company in Hangzhou. To make the robot look real, designers used the photos of real antelope fur. In a test video, the robot walked two kilometers over mountain roads to reach the herd. The antelopes were curious but not scared. They let the robot join them, so it could record videos, sounds and other data.
In the 1990s, there were fewer than 70,000 Tibetan antelopes because people hunted them. Now, , there are over 300,000! The robot is a new, high-tech way to help protect these lovely animals and make sure they are safe in the future.

Trees are one of the oldest plants of our Earth. They keep our air clean, make less pollution, make water cleaner and provide food and building materials.
Just like us, trees change a lot as they grow. At one to three years old, young trees learn how to protect themselves. For example, many trees grow thorns (刺) to stop animals from going near.
At the age of four, trees begin to grow very quickly and become strong enough to face many difficulties (困难) later in life. At the age of 15, trees become young adults (成年人). They grow more slowly and begin to produce (生长) flowers and fruit.
When the tree is 20 to 25 years old, it becomes a real adult. The tree reaches its largest size. It gives us shade and provides a great place for a tree house, or a place for us to read a book, listen to music and so on. If we all learn how to protect the adult tree, it will live healthily for many years.
Little by little, trees begin to grow older and older and even die. At this time, older trees are still very important in nature. When a tree becomes hollow or part of it dies, it can be a home to small animals.

Mangroves (红树林) are very special forests. They grow along the coastlines (海岸线). They look like tall green walls rising from the sea. Although they might seem like just trees, they do many important jobs for nature.
First, mangroves play a very important role. They protect coasts from strong winds and big floods, keeping homes and beaches safe. Their roots (根) are like little cities for small animals. Small fish swim around them and birds build their homes there. What’s more, these trees are great cleaners. They take out the bad things in the seawater, making the sea cleaner and healthier. In a word, mangroves are not only beautiful but also very useful. We should protect them well.
But now, mangrove forests are in great danger. People cut them down to build houses or start farms. Human activities create lots of rubbish and wastewater. This is also harmful to them. Many mangrove forests are getting smaller and many small animals in the sea are losing their homes. It’s time for us to take action.
The good news is that more and more people are waking up to their importance. Volunteers (志愿者) plant new mangrove trees, and scientists study how to protect them better. We can help, too. For example, we should stop putting rubbish into the sea and take part in activities to protect mangroves. After all, saving mangroves means keeping nature healthy and it’s good for all living things.

Have you ever thought that someone looks like their name? A new study suggests that a person’s name may influence how they look when they grow up.
In the study, researchers showed people photos of different faces and asked them to choose the most matching (相配的) names. People in the study could correctly match the names to the adult faces quite well. However, they found it much harder to match names to children’s faces. This suggests that as people grow older, their looks might slowly change to fit their name.
The researchers also used a computer program to compare faces. It found that adults with the same name look more similar to each other than adults with different names. But this was not true for children.
▲ The researchers think it might be because many people have the same ideas about names. For example, people might think someone named “Bob” should have a rounder and happier face. Without realizing it, a person named Bob might smile more often or choose a certain hairstyle, making his face look rounder and friendlier over time. This way, he slowly grows to look like his name.
The study shows that our names might play a small but interesting part in shaping who we are even in how we look.
1.What did people find difficult to do in the study?
A.To choose the right name for adults. B.To match names to children’s faces.
C.To take photos of different faces. D.To give names to children.

3.Which of the following can be put in ________ in Paragraph 4?
A.Why does this happen? B.What is the final result?
C.How do computers help? D.When did the study begin?
4.What does Bob probably look like?

5.Which is the best title for this passage?
A.How to Choose a Good Name? B.Why Do Children Look Different?
C.Do Computers Know Our Faces? D.Can Names Change Our Looks?
China has many kinds of butterflies. There are about 2,000 kinds of butterflies recorded (记载) in China. That’s about one-tenth of all butterfly kinds in the world. The Butterfly Valley (峡谷), in Jinping County of Yunnan Province, is the homeland of butterflies.
One special kind is the Golden Kaiserihind (金斑喙凤蝶). It’s very precious and rare (珍贵稀有) — scientists even call it the “giant panda of butterflies”. It lives in mountains or forests about 1,000 meters above sea level. It’s precious because it has special living habits and needs a good environment to live in.
Another kind is the Common Mormon (玉带凤蝶). It’s one of the largest butterflies in China. A female (雌性)’s wings can spread up to 16cm. The world’s largest butterfly is the Queen Alexandra’s Birdwing (亚历山大鸟翼凤蝶). But it doesn’t live in China—it lives in New Guinea.
We also have the Common Peacock (孔雀蛱蝶). Its tail (尾巴) is wide. It has a special shape (形状), and only two kinds in its group have this shape. These two kinds are both in China: one on the mainland, the other in Taiwan, China.
Butterflies are important parts of our nature. We should protect them and their living environment.

In many ways, the life of a tree is similar (相似的) to our own life. When looking at the life of a tree, we should enjoy every minute of its life and take care of the tree!

A.To choose the right name for adults. B.To match names to children’s faces.
