About 20 years ago, while on the way to a student’s house, Zhang Guimei, then a rural teacher in Huaping county, Lijiang, Yunnan province, noticed a girl sitting on the hillside. The girl, 13, told Zhang she was about to get married though she wanted to go to school. It was arranged by her parents.
Zhang went to her house and tried to persuade her parents to let the girl return to school and promised to pay for her tuition herself. However, they didn’t agree. Zhang felt sorry for not being able to help. “We always say that each child should stand on the same starting line, but these girls didn’t even have a chance to get on the track,” Zhang said.
It persuaded Zhang to build a free high school for girls with the objective of helping break the cycle that saw women drop out of education, marry early and spend their whole life in the remote mountain. Zhang had spent years trying to raise funds, and in 2008, Huaping High School for Girls, a free public high school, was founded, where Zhang is the principal. Over the decades, Zhang has walked thousands of kilometers, visiting students’ families in the deep mountain, talking to villagers, and persuading girls to go back to school. It has been worth it. More than 1,800 graduates have been admitted to college. It is regarded as a “miracle” in the remote area, as most students didn’t perform well in academic study before the school was established.
Though lacking full health, Zhang insists on a daily routine—get up around 5 a.m. to call students to get up with a loudspeaker, accompany students to classes and sleep after senior students’ study ends at midnight. Zhang’s husband died in the 1990s. She doesn’t have children or a house, so she lives at the student dormitory. Besides girls in her school, Zhang also donates all her income to help rural education and poor people.
In early December, she was given the honor of the country’s “role model for teachers” and “outstanding woman”. Her commitment to her education career inspires thousands of people.
4 Why did Zhang feel sorry when the girl’s parents refused to let the girl return to school?
A. The girl’s family was too poor to pay for her tuition fees.
B. The girl had to marry a man who was much older than her.
C. The girl didn’t even have the chance to complete her education.
D. The girl was unable to find a high school nearby to continue her education.
5. What is probably the biggest challenge for Zhang to build the free school for girls?
A. Not many girls want to attend this school.
B. Few parents support their girls’ going to school.
C. The local government didn’t offer the land for the school.
D. It was not easy for Zhang to get enough money to build the school.
6. What does the underlined word “It” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Most students didn’t study well before Huaping High School for Girls was founded.
B Huaping High School for Girls was founded.
C. Many girls can go to Huaping High School for Girls for free.
D. Many girls from Huaping High School for Girls have gone to college.
7. What is the main idea of this passage?

B. Let girls stand on the same starting line.
C. Inspiring stories of girls’ education.
D. Huaping High School for Girls.

No matter how you feel about it. AI is here. So, which types of jobs are most at risk? What’s the best way to stay relevant?
According to a Goldman Sachs study, most jobs and industries are only partly exposed to automation and are thus more likely to be complemented (辅助) rather than replaced by AI So, which are the most endangered?
Joc Apfelbaum, who teaches how to use AI through his course, says most at risk are jobs that use a process that can be done faster and cheaper with AI like forming products or filing tax returns.
Shannan Monson, a founder and educator, says the outlook is not that negative. “We didn’t stop washing our dishes just because the dishwasher was invented. We simply get to do it faster, easier, and with less effort.” Paul Canetti, a professor at Columbia Business School, says that decision-makers and people managers are safe because AI can’t motivate or relate to humans.
As AI develops, its application might not be as fast as we think. But those who are well-learned in it quickly are at more of an advantage. Canetti says there is going to be “a long period of transition (过渡期), where you can perform really well at your job by taking advantage of these new tools before the average person does.”
Experts agree that clearly human skills will remain the most valuable. Humans are uniquely qualified there and human-to-human work is going to be hardest to replace. “Focus on building your skills as a team player and a team leader” Monson says. Apfelbaum argues that it’s not just about reskilling, but rather people need to get over their fears and get complete with who they are so they can show up with all their creativity since AI does not have passion and real human creativity.
8. What may be affected most by AI?
A. Managing human resources. B. Reporting taxes.
C. Selling new products. D. Making decisions.
9. What might Apfelbaum and Monson agree with?
A. We can’t stop AI controlling our life. B. We needn’t overestimate AI’s impact.
C. Adopting AI makes humans lazy. D. Employing Al in life is effortless.
10. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 5 refer to?
A AI’s outlook. B. AI’s development.
C. AI’s application. D. AI’s advantage.
11. Which is the best title for the passage?
A. How to get over people’s fears on AI?
B. How to explore human emotions AI affects?
C. How to exhibit AI’s creativity in workplaces?
D. How to stay relevant at work at the age of AI?
D
Processed foods like chips, sodas and frozen pizzas are full of salt, sugar, and fat. Now, scientists are trying to understand if there is something else about such foods that may be bad for humans.
Scientists have already linked low-cost, packaged foods to rising obesity rates around the world. Obesity increases the risk of many health problems. Three recent studies offer more clues on how our increasingly industrialized food supply may be affecting our health.
The researchers created a system that places foods into four groups. The system says highly processed foods are made mostly of industrialized materials and additives(添加剂). Sodas, packaged cookies, instant noodles and chicken nuggets(鸡肉块) are some examples of highly processed foods. But also included are products that can seem healthy, such as morning cereals, energy bars and some kinds of yogurt.
Researchers conducted a four-week study involving 20 people. They found that people ate about 500 more calories a day when fed mostly processed foods. That is compared to when the same people were given less processed foods. The researchers permitted the 20 participants to eat as much or as little as they wanted. They were taken to a medical center so their health and behavior could be observed. In another study, researchers in France found people who ate more processed foods were more likely to have heart disease. A similar study in Spain linked eating more processed foods to a higher risk of death in general.
When fed less processed foods, people in the study produced more of a hormone that controls hunger, and less of a hormone that causes hunger. The reason for the reaction is not clear. The scientists also found that people ate processed foods more quickly. Kevin Hall is one of the researchers who led the study. He said that processed foods were usually softer and easier to chew and swallow”. Hall noted the source of nutrients might make a difference. For example, fiber from fruit and vegetables may be better for making people feel full than fiber added to packaged foods such as energy bars and yogurt.
Avoiding processed foods can be hard, especially for people with limited time and money. Processed foods can also take many forms. In addition, companies continually re-engineer products to make them seem healthier. The newest studies may provide more reasons to avoid processed foods. But, they also call attention to the difficulty of coming up with ways to do that.
12. What kind of food do energy bars belong to?
A. Fairly health-friendly foods. B. Especially beneficial foods.
C. Relatively high-cost foods. D. Highly processed foods.
13. What can we know about eating more processed foods in Paragraph 4?
A. It does harm to people potentially. B. It can often result in death.
C. It makes people get less calories. D. It makes little difference to people’s health.
14. What is more likely to make people feel full?
A. Fiber added to packaged foods.
B. Fiber from fruit and vegetables
C. Highly processed foods like instant noodles.
D. Foods made mostly of industrial materials and additives.
15. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?
A. Different Kinds of Processed Foods
B. Recent Studies on Processed Foods
C. How Bad Processed Foods Are!
D. Advantages and Disadvantages of Processed Foods

Andy and Eric were two friends who often played together. One day, on their way back home from school, they rode slowly, talking about the fishing trip that they had planned for the coming summer vacation. While turning a corner, Andy cried out, “A fight near the lake! Let’s go to watch!”
“No,” said Eric. “Let’s go home and not get involved in their quarrel. Stay away from it, or we may get into trouble. What’s more, our parents are waiting for us at home and I don’t want them to worry about me.”
“You are a coward (胆小鬼).” Andy laughed at him. Eric was a little annoyed, but he didn’t say anything, just riding home directly. The next day, he went to school as usual.
However, Andy had told all the class that Eric was too timid to do anything brave. So the whole class laughed at him a lot. And from then on, they looked down on Eric, unwilling to play with him. Eric was very sad but he didn’t blame Andy for his being rude to him, because he learned that true courage is shown most in bearing misunderstanding when it was not deserved, and that he ought to be afraid of nothing but doing wrong. Therefore, he ignored their teasing, studying even harder. What was different was that he had to go home alone.
Several days later, Andy together with his new friends was riding home. They were so absorbed in their conversation that they were unaware of everything else around them.
Suddenly, Andy noticed an unusual buzz of noise. He came to a stop and looked curiously up to the heavens. What he saw shocked and terrified him. A huge swarm of bees filled the sky like a black cloud and the noisy mass seemed to be heading angrily towards them.
“Bees!” someone shouted. The boys were caught in great panic. All of them except Andy rode as fast as possible to escape. Andy was too scared to move.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;

4. Why did Zhang feel sorry when the girl’s parents refused to let the girl return to school?
B. Huaping High School for Girls was founded.
C. Many girls can go to Huaping High School for Girls for free.
D. Many girls from Huaping High School for Girls have gone to college.
7. What is the main idea of this passage?
A. A teacher shows girls how to reach the top.
B. Let girls stand on the same starting line.
C. Inspiring stories of girls’ education.
D. Huaping High School for Girls.
C 5. B 6. D 7. B

根据题干可定位到第二段第三、四句“Zhang felt sorry for not being able to help. ‘We always say that each child should stand on the same starting line, but these girls didn’t even have a chance to get on the track,’ Zhang said.(张为没能帮上忙而感到遗憾。张说:“我们总是说每个孩子都应该站在同一条起跑线上,但这些女孩甚至没有机会登上赛道。”)”可知,张桂梅在劝说女孩的父母,让他们的孩子返回学校继续上学,所以get on the track在此处比喻有受教育的机会。因此,张桂梅感到难过的原因是这个女孩甚至没有机会完成她的教育。故选C。
【5题详解】
推理判断题。第一、二段中提到了一个女孩辍学,并且其父母反对她继续上学;再根据第三段第三句“Over the decades, Zhang has walked thousands of kilometers, visiting students’ families in the deep mountain, talking to villagers, and persuading girls to go back to school.(在数十年间,张桂梅步行数千公里,走访深山里学生的家庭,与村民交谈,说服女孩儿们回到学校。)”
根据第三段的“More than 1,800 graduates have been admitted to college. It is regarded as a “miracle” in the remote area, as most students didn’t perform well in academic study before the school was established.(1800多名毕业生被大学录取。它被认为是偏远地区的“奇迹”,因为在学校成立之前,大多数学生在学业上都表现不佳。)”可知,It指代上一句“More than 1,800 graduates have been admitted to college.(超过1,800名毕业生被大学录取。)”
C
No matter how you feel about it. AI is here. So, which types of jobs are most at risk? What’s the best way to stay relevant?
According to a Goldman Sachs study, most jobs and industries are only partly exposed to automation and are thus more likely to be complemented (辅助) rather than replaced by AI So, which are the most endangered?
Joc Apfelbaum, who teaches how to use AI through his course, says most at risk are jobs that use a process that can be done faster and cheaper with AI like forming products or filing tax returns.
Shannan Monson a founder and educator, says the outlook is not that negative.
A. AI’s outlook.
B 9. B 10. C 11. D

根据第三段“Joc Apfelbaum, who teaches how to use AI through his course, says most at risk are jobs that use a process that can be done faster and cheaper with AI like forming products or filing tax returns.(Joc Apfelbaum在他的课程中教授如何使用人工智能,他说,最危险的工作是那些使用人工智能可以更快、更便宜地完成的过程,比如制造产品或申报税款)”可知,申报税款这类工作最有可能受到人工智能的影响。
根据第三段中“Joc Apfelbaum, who teaches how to use AI through his course, says most at risk are jobs that use a process that can be done faster and cheaper with AI like forming products or filing tax returns.(Joc Apfelbaum在他的课程中教授如何使用人工智能,他说,最危险的工作是那些使用人工智能可以更快、更便宜地完成的过程,比如制造产品或申报税款)”可知,Apfelbaum认为最受影响的是那些可以被人工智能更快更便宜地完成的工作,但并没有说人工智能会完全取代所有工作;根据第四段中“Shannan Monson, a founder and educator, says the outlook is not that negative. ‘We didn’t stop washing our dishes just because the dishwasher was invented. We simply get to do it faster, easier, and with less effort.’(创始人兼教育家Shannan Monson表示,前景并没有那么糟糕。“洗碗机发明后,我们并没有停止洗碗。我们只是洗得更快、更容易,而且省力。”)”可知,Monson认为前景并没有那么糟糕,人工智能不会完全代替人类工作。由此可推知,Apfelbaum和Monson都认为我们不必过分高估人工智能的影响。故选B项。
10题详解】
词句猜测题。根据指代关系和划线词所在句“As AI develops, its application might not be as fast as we think. But those who are well-learned in it quickly are at more of an advantage.(随着人工智能的发展,它的应用可能不像我们想象的那么快。但那些迅速精通它的人更有优势)”可知,指示代词it指代的是前文提到的“its application”,即“人工智能的应用”。故选C项。

What do the world’s most successful people all have in common? The researchers found that high achievers turn out to be all alike:
Busy! Busy!
____16____John Kotter reported that many of them worked 60 to 65 hours per week, which translates into at least six 10-hour days. The ability and willingness to work difficult and tiring hours has characterized many powerful figures. Energy and strength provide many advantages to those seeking to build power.
Just Say No!
The difference between successful people and very successful people is that very successful people say “no” to almost everything. And that’s what gives them the time to accomplish so much. ____17____And focus means saying “no” to a lot of distractions (分神).
Know What You Are!
Ignore your weakness and keep improving your strengths. Don’t waste time exploring skill areas where you have little competence. Instead focus on and build on your strengths. ____18____
Good Luck!
Luck is not magical, there is a science to it. Richard Wiseman studied lucky people for his book Luck Factor, and broke down what they do right.____19____By being more outgoing, open to new ideas, following the feeling that something is true, being optimistic, lucky people create possibilities.
Does applying these principles to your life actually work? Wiseman created a “luck school” to test the ideas and it was a success. In total, 80 percent of people who attended Luck School said that their luck had increased. ____20____
A. Spend enough time to improve your weakness.
B. Achievement requires focus.
C. On average, their luck had increased by more than 40 percent.

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;

Dragging themselves out of the lake, they struggled up to the shore.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Andy stopped there, with the buzz louder and louder. Just at that moment, Eric rode rapidly towards him like an arrow. He stopped, threw off his clothes and wrapped up their faces. After that, he shouted to Andy, “This way! There is a lake ahead!” With no time to waste, they rode furiously in the direction of the lake, the crazy bees following them. Finally, they made it to the lake. Off their bikes and into the cool water they lived, disappearing below the surface and away from the savage insects. After holding their breath for as long as they could, they came up for air and noticed the bees had gone.
Dragging themselves out of the lake, they struggled up to the shore. Andy looked at Eric gratefully and was ashamed of having called Eric a coward. He realized that Eric had true courage. He hugged Eric, saying “sorry” to Eric repeatedly for his rude behavior and asked for his forgiveness. Eric forgave him happily. He and Andy were friends again and they went home together as usual. From that, Andy learned what true courage was: never be afraid to do good, but always fear to do evil.
