The Alcatraz Gardens Stewardship Program
The Alcatraz Gardens Stewardship Program aims to protect the Alcatraz historic gardens once tended by the island’s military (军事的) members. Volunteers help care for the gardens with activities such as weeding, planting, promoting, and seed collecting. As an added advantage, garden volunteers arrive on Alcatraz before other visitors, so you can experience the island during the most peaceful time of day. Please note, booking is required.

L’ Heure Joyeuse was the first library in France designed especially for children. It opened in the Latin Quarter of Paris in 1924, after the First World War. Heure Joyeuse translates as “Happy Hour”, which seems like an odd name for a children’s library. However, the phrase had an entirely different meaning in 1924, indicating the necessity for a place that would help regain joy in French children’s lives after war.
Before World War I, children in France had limited chances to read books written for their age level. Only a few public libraries offered small collections for children, usually hidden in a back corner. This contrasted (对比) significantly with English and American libraries, which offered open access to read Children’s books. Eugene Morel, a French librarian and writer, visited some of these libraries and began promoting change. He called on free French public libraries and children’s libraries based on the American model.
After the war, a number of American organizations assisted in the rebuilding of France, including American Committee for Devastated France (ACDF). ACDF founded the first modern public library in Paris, the Fessart Library, which included a specific children’s section. A group of American women formed the Book Committee on Children’s Libraries. Their goal was to provide books to European children so they might recover from the trauma (创伤) of war and prepare themselves for a peaceful future. With their help, L’Heure Joyeuse, the children’s library in Paris, opened its doors on November 12, 1924.
The original idea behind the creation of L’Heure Joyeuse was to bring children and books together outside of school in a homey, attractive setting. Therefore, the founders hung pictures on the walls and placed flowers on the tables. Custom-made, child-sized wooden furniture was ordered from the United States. Another goal was to serve children of all ages and social backgrounds. Accordingly, the founders selected a location on a crowded neighborhood in the center of Paris with families from many different countries and backgrounds.
24. Why was the library named “L’Heure Joyeuse”?
A. To provide a strange name. B. To attract kids’ interest in reading.
C. To bring back French kids’ pleasure. D. To make up for the library shortage.
25. What does the underlined word “access” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Chance. B. Addition. C. Contact. D. Award.
26. What does paragraph 3 focus on about the children’s library?
A. Its location. B. Its importance. C. Its popularity. D. Its founding.
27. Why is the wooden furniture mentioned in the last paragraph?
A. To prove the high quality of the equipment.
B. To stress the children-friendly environment.
C. To show different cultures and backgrounds.
D. To display the help from American organizations.
C
For generations of children, going to the circus (马戏团) has been one of the greatest experiences of their young lives. Amazing performers and impressive animal shows used to be the standards of what makes a good circus show. But with the rise of animal rights groups and growing awareness of the bitter lives that circus animals lead, more countries around the world have passed laws to ban (禁止) the use of animals in recent years. So far, a total of 26 countries have gone with the times by introducing bans on using animals in shows.
One German circus has found the next reasonable step and introduced a breathtaking holographic (全息影的) show that combines modern technology with the traditional circus atmosphere. Circus Roncalli, which has been touring since 1976, banned the use of wild animals in its shows in the 1990s, long before others began to take similar steps. Since then, Roncalli has used only household horses, but recently decided to stop using any live animals altogether.
“We decided to stop using animals for their benefit,” said Markus Strobl, the media director of Circus Roncalli, in a 2017 interview with RP Online. “Most of the performances in the show would already be done by the artists today. The focus of the Circus Roncalli is on poctic performances. The holographic projections are large enough to fill the entire circus field, measuring 105 feet wide and 16 feet deep, offering 360° visibility for the entire audience.”
Thanks to modern technology, it’s never been a better time for circuses around the world to end the use of live animals and embrace the future. Circus Roncalli is undoubtedly a big step ahead of the game. In fact, their use of 3D holograms of animals — such as elephants, horses, and even goldfish-has already attracted hundreds of thousands of viewers, making it clear that the future of the circus is here.
28. What led to stopping animal shows?
A. Absence of wild animals. B. Concerns about the animals.
C.Disagreements from performers. D. Views on good circus shows.
29. From Markus Strobl’s words, we know that the holographic show _________.
A. presents images from all directions B. focuses on animal performances
C. covers part of the circus field D. replaces actors completely
30. What’s the author’s attitude to the future circus with holographic shows?
A Doubtful. B. Favorable. C. Indifferent. D. Opposed.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. A New Age of Animal Care
B. The Fall of Traditional Circuses
C. The Rise of Live Animal Shows
D. Animal-Free Circuses with Holograms
D
Parents often face challenges in encouraging their children to eat healthier, but a new study from Stanford researchers offers hope. The study, led by Jennifer Wang and Priya Fielding-Singh, was published in the Journal of Adolescent Health on May 14, 2024. The researchers find that when teens have health-related food rules at home, they are more likely to eat healthier on their own.
To understand how teens make food decisions, Wang and Fielding-Singh surveyed 1,246 high school students from the San Francisco Bay Area. The students were asked about their eating habits and what their parents taught them about food. The findings showed that teens were generally aware of which foods were healthy and which were unhealthy — a fact that partents often ignore.
But Wang and Fielding-Singh wanted to know more than just what teenagers thought about food. They wanted to see how teens acted when they thought their parents weren’t watching. Therefore, they conducted an experiment where students chose snacks with or without their parents’ agreement. Ten snack options were presented: five healthy and five less healthy. The results showed that teens with health-related food rules at home were more likely to pick healthy snacks, regardless of whether their parents were watching.
“It is important for parents to understand whether food rules — and which ones — can help encourage healthy eating,” Wang said. The researchers found that rules centred on health — such as allowing junk food only on special occasions or requiring vegetables at dinner — were effective because they stressed the importance of considering healthiness when making food choices. On the other hand, rules unrelated to health, such as no cell phones at the table, had no impact on teens’ food decisions.
“We hope these findings offer some encouragement for parents,” said Fielding-Singh. “Having clear do’s and don’ts about healthy eating at home may give kids a roadmap for making healthier choices when they are on their own.”
32. What is the main finding of the study?
A. Family food rules matter.
B. Parents’ guidance doesn’t work.
C. Teens make food choices at will.
D. Teens’ eating habits are unchangeable.
33. What was the purpose of the further experiment in paragraph 3?
A To strengthen the power of parents.
B. To observe teens’ snack choices.
C. To test the effect of the food rules.
D. To examine common sense on healthy food.
34. Which rule was effective regarding food choices?
A. Have some vegetables at dinner. B. Replace stable food with snacks.
C. Limit screen time at the table. D. Allow much junk food.
35. What role did the family food rules play according to Fielding-Singh?
A. Forcing kids to follow strict diets.
B. Making kids interested in healthy food.
C. Improving teens’ individual diets greatly.
D. Guiding teens to make wise decisions independently.

Last Christmas Eve, Kane and Ramey, two maintenance workers from a company in Washington, found a broken bag while they were repairing the highway.
To their surprise, inside the bag were tennis shoes and toys with a Christmas card attached, which indicated that they were gifts from a father to his kids.
Kane and Ramey brought the bag to their company but nobody had reported the gifts missing. Then the two made a Facebook post, hoping to find the owner quickly. Christmas morning was only one sleep away. “I remember being a kid myself,” said Kane, “I know what the Christmas gifts mean for children. That’s why we’ll make every effort to get these back to the family as soon as possible.”
Ten hours passed with no response. Determined to reunite the gifts with their owners, Kane and Ramey worked tirelessly and their colleagues, family members and friends were asked to help track down the owner and they finally got lucky.
Around 9 p.m., Mary of East Wenatchee, Washington, posted on Facebook that her brother Carlie had lost a bag full of kids’ Christmas gifts. Had anyone seen them? 因此,他们进行了一项实验,让学生在有或没有父母同意的情况下选择零食)”和“The results showed that teens with health-related food rules at home were more likely to pick healthy snacks, regardless of whether their parents were watching.(结果显示,不管他们的父母是否在看着,在家里有健康饮食规则的青少年更有可能选择健康的零食)”可推知,该实验的目的是弄清楚孩子们在没有父母监督时的食物选择,即测试家庭食物规则的效果。故选C项。

61. providing 62. to promote 63. largest 64. the 65. were produced
根据空前的定冠词 “the” 可知,此处应填名词,“popular”的名词形式是“popularity”,“due to the popularity of...”
根据时间状语“in recent years”,句子要用现在完成时,其结构为 “have/has + 过去分词”,主语“Younger generations”是复数,所以用“have become”。故填have become。
分析句子结构可知,此处是一个非限制性定语从句,先行词是“the domestic market size of micro-dramas reached 37.39 billion yuan ($5.31 billion) last year”这件事,关系词在从句中作主语,指物,所以用“which”引导。故填which。
“range from...to...” 故填to。
“a way to do sth.” 故填to promote。
“in the whole world”是固定短语,意为“在全世界”,所以此处填 “the”。故填the。
故填were produced。
