He found something strange. Inside the mailbox, there were tiny dolls sitting on a small sofa. A note with them said, “We’ve decided to live here,” signed by Mary and Shelley. Don thought someone had left the dolls by mistake. But when he asked his neighbors, no one knew anything about it. Don and his wife, Nancy, put up the special mailbox four years ago. Don joked that he could understand why dolls would want to move into such a nice home. He moved the dolls to the back of the mailbox, hoping someone would take them back, but they stayed. Over the next few weeks, more small things mysteriously (神秘地) appeared: a table, a pillow, a bed, a painting, and even a pot. Don, with his sense of humor, added a note suggesting the dolls needed a fridge, though it never arrived. The dolls remained in the mailbox. Don shared the mystery on a neighborhood (街坊) app called Nextdoor. His post quickly caught people’s attention, and his neighbors were interested in the strange “visitors”. Some neighbors thought Don was behind the saga (一连串事件)—the strange happenings that had everyone in town talking. The story seemed to grow bigger each day, but Don stated he wasn’t the one who created it. He only provided the dolls with a place to live. Others thought someone in the community was having fun with it. As time went by, Don started to enjoy the mystery. He said, “I like the mystery.” Neighbors liked the strange story and came over to ask questions. Don decided not to care about who was making the dolls’ home. He hoped the story would keep going. 5. What did Don Powell first think when he found the dolls in his mailbox? A. He was excited about the gift. B. His friends put them there. C. He was scared to call the police at once. D. He considered the dolls were put there carelessly. 6. Why did Don put the dolls at the back of the mailbox? A. He planned to throw them away. B He hoped the dolls would be taken back. C He didn’t want anyone to see them. D. He thought they would get in the way. 7. What was Don’s final attitude (态度) towards the mystery? A. He felt worried. B. He decided to take the dolls away. C. He wanted the mystery to continue. D. He thought it was a waste of his time. 8. What can we infer from the text? A. Don’s wife put the dolls beside the mailbox. B. Don planned to buy a fridge for the dolls. C. The mystery maker finally told the truth to Don. D. The mystery helped neighbors connect with each other. 【答案】5. D 6. B 7. C 8. But will we be able to read today’s digital (数字的) books in hundreds of years? Librarians are worried. Even now, we can’t open some files (文件) from 20 or 25 years ago. Will our digital works be lost in a digital black hole? Will we face the loss of valuable information? Technology is changing fast. Old ways of keeping information are gone now, or they are no longer supported by new technology. For example, many people used floppy discs (软盘) to save files years ago, but today few machines can open them. Also, millions of songs and music pieces were saved on tapes or CDs, but now most old music players no longer work. Another problem is that websites often change or close down, and all the information on them can fall into the digital black hole. Books, however, are quite easy to keep. We don’t need special tools or technology to read them. If you keep them in a dry and safe place, they will stay safe for a long time. Li Shizhen’s great medical book Ben Cao Gang Mu came out in 1593. Amazingly, three copies from the first printing still survive today. That’s not bad for a book more than 400 years old. Today, to some researchers, printed books remain a safe way to keep information. In 2014, a professional group began to raise money to print a famous online encyclopedia into 1,000 books. This would make sure that even if digital technology fails, the knowledge can still be kept. For now, when it comes to storing information, printed copies seem to be the safest choice. However, future technology might develop and provide new ways to solve the problem of the digital black hole. Time will tell. 9 What happens if our digital works fall into a digital black hole? A. They are carefully kept. B. They cannot be understood. C. They cannot be read or reached. D. They are saved in a wrong place. 10. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about? A. How music players are developing. B. How technology is changing over time. C. Why old machines are no longer used today. D. Why technology may cause information loss. 11. Why does the writer mention Ben Cao Gang Mu? A. To discuss why this book is still important. B. To show printed books can last for a long time. C. To explain how easy it is to keep printed books. D. To tell when the earliest printed book came out. 12. What would the writer most probably agree with? A. Libraries should keep more digital books. B. Digital books are less valuable than printed ones. C. Technology will soon solve the problem of the digital black hole. D Technology is still looking for better ways to keep information. 【答案】9. C 10. D 11. B 12. 根据“Will our digital works be lost in a digital black hole? Will we face the loss of valuable information?”可知,如果数字作品陷入“数字黑洞”,我们将面临有价值信息的丢失,即这些作品将无法被读取或访问。故选C。 【10题详解】 段落大意题。根据“Technology is changing fast. Old ways of keeping information are gone now, or they are no longer supported by new technology”以及本段内容可知,第二段主要围绕技术快速变化展开,提到旧的保存信息的方式不再适用,如软盘、旧音乐播放器等无法使用,网站信息可能消失等,都是在说明技术可能导致信息丢失。故选D。 【11题详解】 推理判断题。根据“Books, however, are quite easy to keep. We don’t need special tools or technology to read them”以及“Li Shizhen’s great medical book Ben Cao Gang Mu came out in 1593. Amazingly, three copies from the first printing still survive today”可知,作者提到《本草纲目》是为了展示纸质书籍能够长时间保存的特点。故选B。 【12题详解】 推理判断题。根据“For now, when it comes to storing information, printed copies seem to be the safest choice. However, future technology might develop and provide new ways to solve the problem of the digital black hole”可知,作者认为目前纸质书籍是保存信息的最安全选择,但未来技术可能会发展出新的解决方案来应对“数字黑洞”问题,即技术在寻找更好的信息保存方式。故选D。 D Is there a connection between music and language? According to the latest studies, the answer is yes. Here are two examples. A study from Northwestern University shows that playing a musical instrument can improve a person’s hearing ability. As a part of the study, two groups of people listened to a person talking in a noisy room. The people in the first group were musicians, while those in the second group had no musical training. The musicians were able to hear the talking person more clearly. Musicians have better hearing ability. “Musicians hear better,” says the leader of the study, Nina Kraus. “Because they learn to pay attention to some sounds. When they play with the group, they hear their own instruments and ignore the other sounds. In this way, musicians can play their music better.” Gottfried Schlaug, a doctor at Harvard Medical School, works with stroke (中风) patients. Because of their illness, these people cannot say their information normally. However, they can still sing. Dr. Schlaug was surprised to find that singing words helped his patients to eventually (最终) speak. All of a sudden, patients may use those parts of the brain again. Music, therefore, is not only enjoyable but also good for us in many other ways. 13. According to the study from Northwestern University, music can improve ______ ability. A. teaching B. hearing C. speaking D. learning 14. The underlined word “ignore” in Paragraph 3 means “______”. A. lay out B. do harm to C. look up D. pay no attention to 15. How does Gottfried Schlaug help stroke patients speak? A. By playing music for them. B. By asking them to sing words. C. By getting them to write down words. D. Being hopeful that spring is around the corner and warmer, brighter days are ahead is a powerful feeling. This is because hope gives us the strength to be positive (积极乐观的), even when things don’t go our way. Hope is a positive feeling that things will get better. It’s more than just wishful thinking; hope means taking action and believing you have the power to achieve your goals (目标). “When I’m hopeful, it makes me see the brightness in myself,” says Jonah, aged eight, “It’s good to be hopeful because it gives you a chance to be happy about things.” Charles Snyder, a psychologist (an expert in how we think), studied hopeful thinking and said it has three main parts: having a goal, thinking up different ways to achieve it and believing in yourself even when things go wrong. Snyder called hope a “rainbow of the mind,” because it “lifts our spirits and makes us think of what is possible.” Being hopeful about something, like trying out a new sport or hobby, takes courage because you’re taking a step into the unknown. This helps you work out what’s important to you, as well as making you more confident. Studies show that being hopeful also helps you learn better at school, build strong friendships and feel less stressed. Hope is a skill you can learn. Hope expert David Feldman suggests starting by working towards a goal that’s important to you, then thinking up different ways to achieve it. So if you hope to be a chef one day, for example, aim to learn one new recipe a week. Staying focused on your goal takes energy, so eat healthily and get plenty of sleep. If you start to feel hopeless, get inspired by people who have already succeeded or tell someone who supports you so they can help you improve. Finally, make use of your imagination and picture yourself achieving your goal. Picturing success in the future is hope in action. 根据语篇内容,按要求回答问题。 41. 5. He considered the dolls were put there carelessly. 6. Why did Don put the dolls at the back of the mailbox? A. He planned to throw them away. B He hoped the dolls would be taken back. C. He didn’t want anyone to see them. C Libraries around the world still keep old books hundreds of years old. Books however, are quite easy to keep. 9. What happens if our digital works fall into a digital black hole? D. Technology is still looking for better ways to keep information. D Is there a connection between music and language? D. By teaching them to play an instrument. 16. How does the writer write the passage? A. By giving examples. B. By telling a story. C. By asking questions. D. By listing numbers. 第二节 阅读短文,从方框内所给的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项,其中有一个多余的选项。 Everyone is born with the ability to be a smart student—someone who knows how to study and how to succeed ____17____. ●Set yourself goals.
