The year 2024 is a leap year which means it has 366 days instead of the normal number of 365 days. The additional (额外的) day, called leap day, is February 29.
Leap years usually happen every four years. The name is from the idea of making us “leap” over a day of the week. In normal years, if your birthday is on a Monday one year, it will be on a Tuesday next year. However, if your birthday is on a Monday and the following year is a leap year, then your birthday will leap over Tuesday and fall on a Wednesday.
In 46 BC, Roman leader Julius Caesar created the Julian calendar and leap years started to be used. A leap day was added every four years to make sure the calendar matched up with the seasons. In 1582, people began to use the Gregorian calendar, which is used by most of the world today.
The Gregorian calendar is based on Earth’s movement around the Sun, but Earth’s yearly orbit (轨道) does not take an exact 365 days. Instead, Earth’s orbit takes 365 days and about six hours, so a leap day is added to explain the additional hours.
Without leap years, the Gregorian calendar and Earth’s orbit would not match right over time, and neither would the calendar and the seasons of the year. After about 700 years, summers would start in December in many countries.

Think about your best friends. When you met them for the first time, you might not have known they would become your best friends. ____39____
Don’t judge people by their looks, and open our hearts to new people in our lives. We start to understand and treasure the differences between us, like different cultures, different backgrounds and different ways of thinking.
So, let’s keep an open mind and be nice to everyone we meet. ____40____ When we do so, we make a big difference to the world, and we make a world where everyone feels important and accepted. After all, the most amazing things are hidden. They are in each one of us!
