So one day, Tom decided to take Max on a trip, not to an expensive restaurant or an amusement park. Instead, he chose the countryside. When they arrived at the village, everything felt different. The houses were simple, and there were few shopping malls or vehicles (车辆). But to Tom’s surprise, Max had no problem fitting in. He quickly made friends with the local children. Two days later, it was time to leave. The night sky is full of stars. I haven’t seen that before in the city. And the people here can grow their own food.” Max continued, “You know what, Dad? The year 2024 is a leap year which means it has 366 days instead of the normal number of 365 days. The additional (额外的) day, called leap day, is February 29.
Leap years usually happen every four years. The name is from the idea of making us “leap” over a day of the week. In normal years, if your birthday is on a Monday one year, it will be on a Tuesday next year. However, if your birthday is on a Monday and the following year is a leap year, then your birthday will leap over Tuesday and fall on a Wednesday.
In 46 BC, Roman leader Julius Caesar created the Julian calendar and leap years started to be used. A leap day was added every four years to make sure the calendar matched up with the seasons. In 1582, people began to use the Gregorian calendar, which is used by most of the world today.
The Gregorian calendar is based on Earth’s movement around the Sun, but Earth’s yearly orbit (轨道) does not take an exact 365 days. Instead, Earth’s orbit takes 365 days and about six hours, so a leap day is added to explain the additional hours.
Without leap years, the Gregorian calendar and Earth’s orbit would not match right over time, and neither would the calendar and the seasons of the year. After about 700 years, summers would start in December in many countries.

How I found my shining point
Everyone is special and has his or her own shining points. I used to believe that I was a shy girl who didn’t know how to get on well with others. One day, my classmate Lisa sadly shared her terrible experience with me. I listened carefully and patiently. Then I told her some funny jokes and managed to make her smile again. “You can always cheer people up.” she said thankfully to me. At that moment, I realized that I was good at comforting and encouraging people.
Everyone has shining points as long as they take a close look at themselves. You can take part in some activities that can help you find out what you’re good at. Moreover, try your best to help others and you may find your shining points.
