Traditionally, we take the subway with subway cards or by scanning QR codes (扫描二维码) on our smartphones. But now, people traveling on the Beijing Daxing Airport subway have a new way to take a ride—they can scan their palms (手掌).
To enjoy the service, people need to register (登记) their palm prints on machines in subway stations along the Daxing Airport subway line. Then they have to start the palm-scanning function (功能) on their smartphones. Once they do this, they can scan their palms at ticket gates to pass through. After they finish the travel, the payment service on their smartphones will pay the money for their ride.
Many people welcome the new technology. They think it helps them to travel faster and more easily. They don’t have to take out their subway cards or smartphones when they want to pass through the ticket gates. And they no longer have to worry when they forget their subway cards or when their smartphones run out of battery. What’s more, the palm-scanning technology is very friendly to old people and those who have special needs. Those people may not use smartphones well. This technology makes it possible for them to take the subway without using smartphones.
Besides Beijing the palm-scanning technology is also in service in the subway station of Shenzhen. And there are hopes that it can be used in more places like stores and restaurants in the future.

①Do you often hear birdsong outside the window? How do you feel when you hear it? In fact, it is shown that birdsong can influence people’s life.
②Birdsong sounds especially nice in winter because it reminds people of spring. A study found that listening to birdsong for six minutes can help reduce people’s stress. It’s hard to feel sad when you hear birds singing or talking, as the energy in their songs makes people feel like walking in the garden. Unlike music, which can sometimes make you produce strong feelings, birdsong is usually seen as positive or neutral (中性的). If you live in a noisy city, birdsong can be a welcome relief (缓解) from the stress caused by outside noise.
③Another benefit is that birdsong has also been found to improve focus. It can help people focus on their tasks and be more productive (高效的). That’s because when people play birdsong in the background at work, it seems that a “wall” is built to help them stay away from the unpleasant noise outside. In this way, birdsong can be a powerful tool to improve productivity at work.
④Carrie Tom, a doctor in North Carolina, has also found that birdsong makes it easier to help people enter a deep sleep. Birdsong, as a kind of white noise, can slow down people’s heartbeats and breath. After listening to birdsong for a long time, a conditioned response (条件反射) is developed in their brains. Therefore, birdsong becomes a signal of entering sleep, which helps them fall asleep faster than before and improves their sleep quality.

Trying zero-sugar and zero-fat foods, young people are now interested in “zero-sugar” socializing (社交). But what does that mean?
Just like “zero-sugar” foods mean a lighter eating habit, “zero-sugar” socializing is about easier connections. It encourages young people to respect (尊重) personal space, buffer unnecessary communications, and find meaningful ways to get on with others.
According to a 2024 social trends (趋势) report, 54% of young people prefer to “stay in touch but also have time alone”, while only 12.6% of them want to “be together all the time”. This report shows that young people’s social habits are becoming more and more independent nowadays.
Those young people who enjoy zero-sugar socializing often do simple things, like joining city walks or trying new coffee houses with a few friends. They avoid social activities that aren’t really needed. This new idea shows young people’s wish to slow down and pay attention to what is truly important. Young people think the new way fits their ideas.
Although the new way is right for some people, it might not be the best for everyone. So it’s wise to think before following trends, whether you prefer “zero-sugar”, “low-sugar”, or “full-sugar” socializing, the important thing is to know what you need. That’s how you can feel confident (自信的) and happy when you get on with others.
9. What does the underlined word “buffer” probably mean?
A. Increase. B. Keep. C. Improve. D. Avoid.
10. How does the writer develop his idea in Paragraph 3?
A. By using sayings. B. By giving examples.
C. By listing numbers. D. By explaining meanings.
11. What will people who like “zero-sugar” socializing probably do?
A. They will often take part in large parties.
B. They will join city walks with a few friends.
C. They will try to make everyone happy around them.
D. They will spend much time chatting online with many people.
12. What is the writer’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To compare different socializing styles.
B. To introduce “zero-sugar” socializing to people.
C. To tell people to follow “zero-sugar” socializing.
D. To show the disadvantages (弊端) of traditional socializing.
D
You must have read or heard of the sad love story between Jia Baoyu and Lin Daiyu But can you imagine the two singing opera in English instead of speaking beautiful Chinese?
Jia and Lin are two characters from the classic Chinese novel A Dream of Red Mansions (《红楼梦》), written by Cao Xueqin (1715-1763). Now the book has been made into an English-language opera. After being performed in San Francisco, US, the performance came to Beijing, Changsha and Wuhan in 2017.
The book, which covers the rise and fall of the Jia family, has 120 chapters (章节) and hundreds of characters. But opera writer David Henry Hwang cut down the number of characters to just seven. Hwang, a Chinese-American, paid attention to the love story between Jia and Lin and tried to write a heartbreaking tragedy (悲剧) that everyone would understand.
The art director, Timmy Yip, from Hong Kong, tried to help foreign people understand the characters using costumes (服装) and stage settings (舞台布景). He compared Lin to water and gave her a light green costume. When Lin showed up on stage, there was usually water around her on the stage.
Those who created the opera considered it to be a meaningful job to introduce a Chinese classic to Western audiences (观众). Hwang told China Daily he was happy to “have made a contribution (贡献) to the land where his parents were born.”
13. Where was the opera first performed?
A. In Beijing. B. In Changsha.
C. In San Francisco, US. D. In Wuhan.

D. To suggest the sad ending of Lin and Jia.
15. What do creators of the opera think of their job?
A. Difficult and unbelievable. B. Stressful and hard.
C Painful and challenging. D. Meaningful and satisfying.

Both younger and older readers in this school have gained a lot from this two-year program. For example, when they listened to each other, they learned to be kind and patient. This experience also provided them with opportunities (机会) to practice lifelong skills, such as exercising leadership and communicating with others. A student named Jason said that reading to a younger buddy was really helpful. He became more confident because he knew he was a role model for someone.
The school also became a closer community. The reading buddies felt more connected as they often met each other. The students were always excited when they saw their buddies pass by in the hallway.

Those young people who enjoy zero-sugar socializing often do simple things like joining city walks or trying new coffee houses with a few friends.

A. They will often take part in large parties.
B. They will join city walks with a few friends.

D. They will spend much time chatting online with many people.
12. What is the writer’s purpose in writing the text?
