When I was twelve years old, my family moved to Southern California from North Florida.
I could not accept this sudden change, so gradually, I often felt angry and became stubborn. Like so many teenagers, I tried to escape from anything that did not agree with my picture of the world. A “good without need of guidance” kid, I refused any kind of offering of love until I found a letter under the pillow(枕头).
One night, after a particularly difficult day, rushing into my room angrily, I shut the door, threw myself onto the bed, and held the pillow in my arms for comfort, only to find an envelope(信封) under it. On the envelope, it read, “To read when you’re alone.” Since I was alone, no one would know whether I read it or not, so I opened it. The letter said “Mike, I know life is hard right now, I know you are upset and I know we don’t do everything right. I also know that I love you completely and nothing you do or say will ever change that. I am here for you and I love you—that will never change. Love, Mom.” That was the first of several “To read when you’re alone” letters.
Nowadays, I travel the world helping people. Once when I was giving a lecture in Sarasota, Florida, a woman came up to me and shared the difficulty she was having with her son. We walked out to the beach, and I told her about the “To read when you’re alone” letters and my mom’s love under the pillow. Several weeks later, I got a card that said she had written her first letter and left it for her son. That night as I went to bed, I put my hands under my pillow and remembered the relief I felt every time I got a letter. During my teen years, the letters reminded me that I was loved in spite of my shortcomings. Today, when the seas of life are full of storms, the never-changing love fills me with endless power.
4. The author became angry and stubborn mainly because ______.
A. he didn’t like his new school
B. he didn’t get along well with his parents
C. he didn’t get used to the new life after the move
D. he wanted to get away from his parents’ control
5. What do we know about the letter found under the pillow?
A. It was written by the author’s friend.
B. It showed mom’s love and understanding.
C. It focused on the author’s school life.
D. It advised the author to move back to Florida.
6. What made the lady in Sarasota write a letter to her son?
A. The author’s sharing of his mother’s action.
B. The author’s rich teaching experience.
C. Her son’s poor behaviour at school.
D. Her own difficult experience.
7. How does the love of the author’s mom help him today?
A. By encouraging him to help people.
B. By teaching him to write letters to others.
C. By guiding him in his job of teaching in Florida.
D. By making him strong when he faces life’s difficulties.
C
Lately I have started to go jogging in Yoyogi Park. One of the first things that caught my attention when I started was that everybody runs in a counterclockwise (逆时针方向的) direction in the city where there are no rules that say in which direction to run.
Maybe they do it because they try to follow track & field athletics and almost any other kind of race where the running direction is always counterclockwise, or maybe is there any other reason? I have been asking many people and “researching” online. The best answers I found are from the research of a construction professor at Waseda University in Tokyo.
Professor Watanabe Hitoshi devoted many years of his life to research about which is the best way to design stairs and emergency exits. He reached a point in his research where he had to decide if it was better to design stairs that you have to go down clockwise or counterclockwise. Experiments had been carried out some time before, and it was known that there is a tendency (趋势) to turn counterclockwise. But Mr. Watanabe wanted to look into more so he further researched on it:
·Most human beings are right-handed.
·Most of the left-handed people are right-footed, while most of the right-handed people are also right-footed.
·Most human beings have a slightly longer right leg than their left leg.
These three factors make our right leg become dominant over the left leg, which causes a tendency to turn to the left, and to be able to run faster in a counterclockwise direction.
Mr. Watanabe carried out a lot of experiments and observations to reach some conclusions. For example, he found out through an experiment that when people are being chased and trying to escape, they turn to the left unconsciously 70% of the time.
8. What caught the author’s attention when he first started jogging in Yoyogi Park?
A. The direction of running in the park. B. The specific running rules in the park.
C. His interest in the physics of running. D. His curiosity about track & field athletics.
9. What was the purpose of Watanabe’s further research?
A. To study emergency exits. B. To design better running tracks.
C. To prove earlier experiments wrong. D. To find out the reasons behind the tendency.
10. What does the underlined word “dominant” mean in the passage?
A. Opposite. B. Equal. C. Stronger. D. Weaker.
11. What is the best title for this passage?
A. The Right Way to Design Stairs. B. Research on Yoyogi Park Jogging.
C. The Science Behind Running Direction. D. The Benefits of Running Counterclockwise.
D
Has the smartphone lost its power to surprise us? For those of us who cover the tech industry, the answer seems increasingly to be “yes”. The newest iPhones are a clear example — offering modest improvements in speed and photography, yet failing to feel meaningfully different from the phones already in our pockets.
This is why some people in the tech industry are eager for something new and are asking, “What will be the next revolutionary (突破性的) invention to change our lives just as deeply as the smart phone or the personal computer?” At the moment, a lot of people believe that it will be smart glasses. Imagine if instead of having to pick up your phone and look at the screen like a caveman, all of the digital information you need simply appears floating right in front of you, in your glasses.
If the technology can be realized, the possibilities are endless. Imagine having satellite navigation (导航) directions appear right there on the road in front of you. Or imagine being able to secretly watch YouTube during a particularly boring meeting. Smart glasses could be big in industry too. They could display detailed instructions to engineers, so they can fix things more quickly. This sounds like science fiction.
What’s fun is that while our phones are not greatly changing, if you watch hard enough you can still see small steps being taken by the big tech firms towards technologies that will be directly applicable to smart glasses. So if the technology is here, why aren’t we all wearing smart glasses yet? The reason is that there is just one stumbling block (绊脚石) left: the screen. So far no one has invented a good way of projecting (投影) digital images on glass lenses. Though there have been a few attempts, such as Google Glass, they were disadvantaged by a very limited “field of view”. This is a problem that, behind the scenes, the likes of Apple, Google and Facebook are pouring huge resources into solving. So while I can’t say exactly when smart glasses will arrive, they could come into focus much sooner than we think.
12. Why are some people in the tech industry eager for something new?
A. Because smart phones were much different from the old ones.
B. Because the newest technology didn’t make real breakthroughs.
C. Because personal computers were not a revolutionary invention.
D. Because no technology ever transformed our lives basically.
13. How does the third paragraph mainly develop?
A. By giving examples. B. By explaining causes.
C. By introducing a topic. D. By describing a process.
14. What does the author think of the phones at present?
A. They are changing greatly.
B. They are helpful in developing smart glasses.
C. They are more convenient than smart glasses.
D. They are limiting the development of new technologies.
15. What’s the main idea of the passage?
A. Smart glasses are preventing new technology from advancing.
B. Smart glasses are the next invention to change the world.
C. Digital technology will contribute to endless applications.
D. Digital technology is the basis of revolutionary inventions.

Dear Mike,
I’m sorry to hear that your tight schedule leaves you little time for exercise. I’m writing to share some practical suggestions that help you strike a balance between study and fitness.
To begin with, try to make full use of short breaks between classes — just a ten-minute walk or some simple stretches can make a big difference. You could also squeeze in some time each day, perhaps in the early morning or evening, for light exercise such as jogging or doing push-ups. What matters most is keeping it up rather than how long you do it each time.
I’m sure that once you make exercise part of your daily routine, you’ll soon feel healthier and more energetic. Keep going — you can do it!
Yours,
Li Hua
