They stay until spring, then return home. Only the strongest butterflies survive to lay their eggs on milkweed (马利筋). Despite its survival ability, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is considering listing the monarch butterfly as endangered. This butterfly is in danger because the number of milkweed plants is dropping, as a result of the use of chemicals. The loss of this plant would be catastrophic for the species. Luckily, this issue is getting national attention, and people and organizations are working to protect the habitat of the monarch. To learn about efforts to help monarch butterflies, I talked to Justin Wages, Land Manager at Placer Land Trust. Justin told me that the monarch butterfly is not a key species, which means that the ecosystem (生态系统) will not fall apart if the monarch disappears. However, the monarch is an important pollinator (传粉昆虫) and a well-known species. The drop in the monarch population shows common issues for all species related to habitat destruction, pollution, and chemical use. The monarch is known as an animal ambassador (大使). This means it has a good connection with the public and helps raise awareness about protection. For example, Justin noted that most people don’t know or care about the endangered sea animal vernal pool fairy shrimp, but well-known species like the monarch bring attention to the struggles of endangered animals. According to Justin, Placer Land Trust regularly add local milkweed to their planting mix, and their efforts to protect land in Placer County create important feeding areas for the monarch butterfly. Recently they applied for government funding and, if they get the money, they will plant 15 acres of milkweed in their Doty Ravine Preserve. Justin also called on the public to make efforts to help the monarch. 46. What is special about monarch butterflies? A. They lay eggs on all plants. B. They migrate in both directions. C. They only live in the Northeastern U.S. D. They are the only butterfly species that migrates. 47. Which can replace the underlined word “catastrophic” in paragraph 2? A. Very harmful. B. Quite common. C. Totally unnecessary. D. Almost unavoidable. 48. What did Justin mention about the monarch butterfly in paragraph 3? A. It is less important than other pollinators. B. It is the only butterfly making a two-way migration. C. Its population reflects the health of the ecosystem. D. Its habitats have been largely destroyed in recent years. 49. What is the main role of the monarch butterfly as an animal ambassador? A. Telling people about the necessity of studying it. B. Serving as the first example of endangered butterflies. C. Educating people about animal migration patterns. D. Reminding people to care about endangered animals. 50. What will Placer Land Trust do to protect the monarch butterfly? A. Stop the use of chemicals. B. Grow plenty of milkweed. C. Teach the public how to protect it. D. Collect money to raise it in safer places. 【答案】46. B 47. A 48. C 49. D 50. Over 400 students completed a survey about their use of AI on at least five written assignments (书面作业). While only about one-third of the students used AI, the majority of users, 81 percent, reported their AI use was driven by at least one of the following considerations: speed in completing the assignment, a desire (愿望) for high grades and a desire to learn. About 15 percent of the students said they were influenced by all three considerations. Dr. MacNutt notes that most students used AI to improve the paper. Only 0.3 percent of assignments were directly written by AI. “There is growing concern when it comes to student use of AI,” says Dr. MacNutt. “However, students in our study reported that AI use was driven more by learning than by grades, and they are using AI tools carefully and in ways they believe are supportive of their learning.” The study does raise some concerns, Dr. MacNutt warns. AI can be a useful tool for students learning English or people with reading and writing disabilities. But there is also the possibility that if paid ones are better, students who can afford to use a more advanced tool might have an advantage over others. Dr. MacNutt says continued research in this area can only provide a better understanding of student behavior as AI technologies continue to develop. “Our findings contradict common concerns about widespread student misuse and overuse of AI at the expense of academic integrity (学术诚信),” says Dr. MacNutt. “But as we move forward with our guidelines, or how we’re teaching students how to use it, we have to keep in mind that students are coming from really different places. And they have different ways of benefiting (受益) from these technologies.” 51. What may be the purpose of Dr. MacNutt’s study? A. To prove that AI is harmful to students’ learning. B. To study how to improve students’ grades with AI. C. To find out which AI tools are most popular among students. D. To study whether students’ AI use matches common concerns. 52. What did the new study find? A. AI is widely used in university education. B. Students may use AI in a responsible way. C. AI tools can do a good job in writing tasks. D. Students show increased interest in AI tools. 53. What risk does Dr. MacNutt point out in the study? A. AI tools would take the place of English teachers. B. Paid AI tools will become increasingly expensive. C. Paid AI tools could create unfairness in education. D. AI tools might reduce students’ creativity in writing. 54. What is Dr. MacNutt’s suggestion for educators? A. Avoiding overuse of AI in teaching. B. Setting standards for AI use in education. C. Recognizing student differences in AI use. D. Realizing the importance of academic integrity. 55. What can be the best title for the text? A. AI is Here to Stay: Let Students Accept the Technology B. AI or Traditional Teaching: The Future of Education C. AI Tools for Academic Research and Writing D. How AI is Changing Public Education 【答案】51. D 52. B 53. C 54. C 55. I grew up in a home filled with music. My parents had a large collection of records. As a child, I would spend hours listening to the tunes. When I was thirteen, I had a hard time at school as I had no friends and was lonely. One evening, I found an old guitar in the attic (阁楼). I remember the way the light shone through the window, lighting up the instrument softly. I picked it up and played a few chords (和弦). The sound was far from perfect, but it resonated with (引起情感共鸣) something deep inside me and cheered me up. A few years later, my grandmother whom I was very close to passed away. Her death left a huge void (空虚) in my life, and I struggled to deal with the grief. One night, feeling particularly lost, I found a playlist of her favorite songs. Listening to those familiar tunes we once shared, I was in tears. But as the music played on, something unexpected happened, I could almost feel my grandmother beside me, as if she was comforting me. The music, those tunes she had loved so much, began to reduce the ache in my heart. At that moment, I realized that even though she was gone, a part of her spirit lingered through the music we both treasured. B Visitors to Yellowstone National Park were shocked when they saw what appeared to be a dog with a collar (项圈) running free in the park, only to realize it was a large black wolf. Marcela, a wildlife photographer who runs the photo studio Ruby Hour Photo Art. captured the moment in September 2024. She shared the video on her Instagram account @rubyhourphotoart on May 3, 2025, explaining she was posting it as “a reminder to drive carefully in Yellowstone.” The video shows a large black wolf — wearing a bright yellow collar-running across the grass before crossing the road. But just as it reaches the road, a fast-moving car slows down in time to allow the wolf to continue crossing. “It pays to pay attention, especially during those seasons when animals are moving across the parks or have new babies,” said Marcela. The Yellowstone Wolf Project is a detailed study of wolves in the national park, including the animals’ population, predator-prey interactions (捕食关系) and social behavior. Researchers place collars with very high frequency (频率) radio and GPS on wolves in the area to track and study the animals, according to Yellowstone.org. Marcela told Newsweek it’s always an amazing experience to observe wildlife in their own habitat (栖息地), stressing the importance of doing so from a proper distance, and treating them with respect. She said, “After all, it’s us who are the guests in their environment. I understand people get excited and want to get close, but it’s worth remembering you’re putting both yourself and the animal in danger too by inattentively driving or getting too close.” 41. C Monarch butterflies are the only species (物种) that migrates both ways, traveling up to 3,000 miles from the Northeastern U.S. to the Sierra Madre mountains in Mexico in the fall. D Dr. Meaghan MacNutt from UBCO School of Health and Exercise Sciences (HES), recently published a study in Advances in Physiology Education which contradicts common concerns (驳斥了普遍担忧) about student use of AI. How AI is Changing Public Education 第二节 阅读表达(每题2分,共10分) 阅读表达 Music has always been a part of my life, providing me with invaluable help. To let more people know the power of music, I joined a local band and gave performances. I was really proud to be able to bring warmth and hope to others through music. 56.
