Everyone knows that forests help deal with climate (气候) change. However, a recent scientific report shows that the world lost 300,000 square kilometers of forest in 2024. That’s an area about the size of Italy.
According to the report, fires were the biggest cause of forest loss (减少). Brazil, which has the largest area of rainforest in the world, experienced a long period of dry weather. About 25,000 square kilometers of its rainforest disappeared. This meant fires caused 66% of its forest loss that year.
The second biggest cause of the world’s forest loss was clearing land for farming. As people need more land to farm, they keep cutting down forest every year. In 2024, the area of forest cleared for farming increased by 14% around the world. What’s more, the situation was more severe in developing countries. For example, farmers in Brazil cleared much more rainforest for farmland than those in developed nations.
Without doubt, something must be done before it is too late. So experts call on governments, businessmen and people to work together. It seems that China has set a good example. Thanks to cooperation (合作) from different sides, China had the biggest increase in forest area among all countries in 2024. According to a news report, newly-planted trees in China covered an area of nearly 45,000 square kilometers. If more countries start to take action like China, the earth will become a greener planet.

People have different opinions about Atlantis. Some people strongly believe that Atlantis is real and take part in looking for it actively. For them, the remains are somewhere at the bottom of the sea, just waiting to be discovered. Most of the believers think Atlantis is somewhere near the Mediterranean Sea (地中海), while others say it’s in the Atlantic Ocean. However, finding it is not easy.
Besides, there’s a group of people who see Atlantis as a story. In their opinion, Plato was just creating Atlantis to teach his students a lesson. Some of them also believe Plato was telling the story of an island called Thera (提拉) rather than Atlantis.
Even today, people are still trying their best to find out whether Atlantis is a fact or just a story. We hope to work out this problem soon.
