Slowly but surely, Amy and her grandparents were making progress. Boxes of all sizes were placed on top of each other throughout the house. Amy’s grandparents had lived in the house for years and they had decided to move.
The dining room was full of memories. Amy’s grandfather kept many fine dinner plates from his hometown. Amy remembered that they ate from the red, yellow, and blue plates during important holidays.
After carefully packing the plates and putting them into a box, Amy lifted it up and moved it out of the way. But the box was too heavy. It suddenly fell from her arms and dropped to the floor. All three of them heard the plates shatter(破碎).
“I’m sorry!” Amy apologized.
“It’s okay,” her grandfather said quietly. “It was an accident.”
They opened the box and, sure enough, many of the plates were broken. Only a few remained whole. Looking at the small pieces, Amy felt really terrible. She knew these plates were passed down from her great grandparents and …
“Don’t worry,” her grandmother said, patting her on the back. Carefully, they put the broken pieces into a rubbish bag.
They continued packing for a little while, but Amy still felt very sorry. She was trying very hard to think of a way to make it up for her grandparents.
Soon, Amy’s father came.
“I have to go,” she said. “Dad is here to pick me up.”
She kissed her grandparents both, picked up the bag of the broken pieces and left. “What’s that?” her father asked, as Amy climbed into the car.
Amy looked at the bag in her hands as an idea came to her. “This,” she said, “is an art project.”
The following day, Amy went to an art store and bought everything she needed. Then she started to work. She used a thin board as the base. Then she took out the colorful plate pieces and glued them in a creative way on the board. When it was dry, Amy wrapped it up.
A few days later, Amy’s family had a big dinner at her grandparents’ new house. She handed her gift to her grandparents.
“This is fantastic, Amy!” said her grandfather.

Otters(水獭) are cute water animals. These days, keeping otters as pets is getting popular. In Japan, some “otter cafés(咖啡馆)” are open for business. People can pay to play with the otters there and to take photos with them. In Indonesia, people go swimming with their pet otters and take funny videos. These photos and videos posted online have interested more people to buy otters as pets.
However these enjoyable photos and videos hide the damage(损害) that the online trade is doing to otters. In fact, wild otters are facing many threats — they have long been hunted for their coats; in some places, fishermen have been killing otters in order to stop them from eating fish; and now, the online pet trade has become another big problem for otters.
In the wild, baby otters usually stay with their mothers during their first year of life. According to a report, 70% of the otters sold online are under one year old. These baby otters have been stolen from their mothers. When they are kept as pets by humans, they do not live full and natural lives.
Otters are very social. They live in family groups of up to 15 in the wild. Keeping an otter as a pet can make it very sad and lonely. These animals also need enough space to swim. Their owners’ bathtubs(浴缸) or pools are nowhere near as large as the bodies of water in the wild.
On the other hand, otters simply don’t make good pets. They have a very special fishy smell. If they are kept indoors, they will leave a lot of waste around the house. This would make the smell even more unpleasant. Besides, when otters are unhappy, they will make loud noises and even attack(攻击) people. If a person is hurt by an otter, he or she needs to go to hospital at once.
So, we should stop the otter pet trade and never share photos and videos about them online.

B. They don’t need enough space to swim.

34. Which is NOT the true reason why otters don’t make good pets?
A. They may attack people. B. They may make loud noises.
C. They have a special fishy smell. D. They need to go to hospital often.
35. What is the writer’s main purpose of writing the text?
A. To tell people the otters’ living habits. B. To teach people how to keep a pet otter.
C. To call on people to stop the otter pet trade. D. To introduce the appearance of the otters.

Have you ever imagined your T-shirt could act as an air conditioner (空调) on those hot summer days? Thanks to a discovery, that possibility is getting closer and the T-shirt may soon be found among your favorite clothing brands.
Two inventors took a completely new method. They designed a special textile (纺织品) that can take in body heat and then send out the energy. This new textile cools both the objects and things around them through a technology. This means that a T-shirt made of this textile looks like a normal T-shirt, but actually it works like a mirror.
Although the technology is not new and has been used for years to design plastic films and special paints, its use in the textile industry for the good of wearers is very special and exciting. That is because, in the past, the methods we used to deal with heat through clothes were only the suggestions on wearing light colors and choosing breathable textiles. But even when these suggestions can actually help you feel cool, they are simply not enough in the hottest season. The new textile, however, can reflect all kinds of light, and this can contribute to the cooling process.
So this discovery is a real advance.
Right now, researchers still need to test the new method to know how effectively (有效) the new textile works while the wearers are standing or walking, and not directly facing the sky. They also need to test how well it works when T-shirts are not close to the skin. But it’s still a great success.
The two inventors are now looking out for clothing brands that are interested in using their textile. One inventor said, “The new material will increase clothing producing costs by just 10 percent. We can make it with large production. Everybody can afford a T-shirt made of this textile and the cost is nearly the same as a normal T-shirt’s. It can do good to everybody.”
36. What can we know about the new textile?
A. It can make wearers feel cool. B. It can make wearers look handsome.
C. It can get wearers’ health information. D. It can test wearers’ body temperature.
37. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. The technology has been used in the textile industry for years.
B. Researchers find the textile works well in different conditions.
C. The textile can be used as a mirror while we wear it.
D. This new textile cools objects and things around them.
38. What does the underlined phrase “contribute to” mean in paragraph 3?
A. 减缓 B. 促进 C. 接收 D. 扰乱
39. What are the two inventors doing now?
A. Making money by selling the textile. B. Trying to use the textile in other fields.
C. Trying to find out more secrets of the textile. D. Looking for clothing brands to use the textile.
40. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A. A Popular Brand. B. Two Great Inventors.
C. A Special Textile. D. Lucky Wearers.

A promise I made
Promises are very important We shouldn’t break our promises. The one who can’t keep his promises is not reliable.
Once, my friend asked me to be with him, because his parents were on business and he was left alone. At first, I promised. But I had lots of things to do that afternoon. When I finished, I found it was dark. I wanted to give up meeting my friend. But thinking about his disappointed face, finally, I decided to keep my words. When my friend saw me, he was so excited. He said he believed that I would come.
So that was my promise. And I will always be the person that keeps my promises.
