As most dog owners will agree, having a dog is great for several reasons. For one, dogs are
typically loyal, steady companions. Many studies have shown that caring for a dog is a great way to
get more exercise, relieve stress, and generally improve quality of life. And,according to one study,
bringing your dog to work can also make you and your co-workers more productive.
But wait.Wouldn't having a bunch of dogs running around the office create chaos? They need
to be walked, fed and played with. And what happens when two or more dogs don't get along?Who
wants an office dog fight?
(外研社)高二英语(二)第3页(共8页)
According to the study, though,as long as dogs are properly selected and are generally friendly,
their presence in the workplace may enhance work efficiency()by lowering stress and
increasing friendship and physical activity. The researchers studied around 500 workers for one
week at a company.Their most interesting finding was that self reported stress remained low
throughout the day for employees who brought dogs to work and increased for workers without
dogs. The researchers also observed many non-dog owners asking to take their co-workers'pets out
for a walk.
Of course, the benefits of having dogs at work depend partly on the workplace and the dog
people choose. But in general job related stress is one of the biggest causes of employees'tiredness
and absence. So bringing dogs and perhaps other pets to work may prove to be an easy, low cost
way to lower stress and make you a better worker.

A father who wants to help make a city one of the most autism )-friendly places in the

spaces.
Dan Harris, from Peterborough, whose son Joshie is autistic, has gained funding for 100
picture boards in the city. They help people communicate through images. He said,"We no longer
want autism to be hidden."The communication boards include symbols representing common

The idea for the picture boards came from Mr Harris'son,Joshie, who points to pictures on an

Peterborough and it's important that the needs of that community are met."He said he wanted to see
the boards introduced across Britain and in other countries. The boards cost f6,000 and are funded
through a combination (of charity donations and local govemment funding.
Mr Harris, who is also the founder of the charity Neurodiversity in Business, which works to

The State of California is depending on its forests to help cut down planet-warming COz.But
that climate-change strategy may be risky,as new research from the University of California,Irvine
(UCD reports that trees in California's mountains and open spaces are dying from wildfires and
other pressures-and fewer new trees are filling the blank.
"The forests are not keeping up with these large fires,"said study co-author James Randerson,
the Ralph J.and Carol M.Cicerone Professor of Earth system science at UCI.Across the whole
state, tree cover area has dropped 6.7%since 1985."These are big changes in less than forty years,"
he said. It's the first time that researchers have been able to measure tree population fall in
California, and find out the reasons(wildfires and woodcutting).
For the study, the UCI-led team used satellite data from the USGS and NASA's Landsat
mission to study plant changes between 1985 and 2021.They found that one of the most obvious
falls in tree cover was in southern California, where 14%of the tree population in local mountain
had disappeared,maybe everlastingly.
"The ability of forests to recover()from fire appears to be dwindling in the south,"
Jonathan Wang,a researcher in Randerson's research group, who led the study coming out in AGU
Advances."At the same time, the state's coverage of bushes and grasses is rising which could mean
more everlasting ecosystem shifts(生态系统转化).”
"The speed and scale of fall in tree cover is different across the state.Tree cover in the Sierra
Nevada, for example, stayed relatively unchanged until around 2010,then began dropping suddenly.
Fortunately,in the north, there's plenty of recovery after fire,"said Wang, perhaps because of the
area's higher rainfall and cooler temperatures."This threat()to California's climate solutions
isn't going away anytime soon,"Wang said."We might be entering a new age of bigger fire and
ulnerable(易受损的)forests.”
32.What mainly helped California cut down CO2?
A.Rich forests.
B.Less vehicles.
C.Energy saving.
D.Fine weather.
33.What has caused the drop of tree cover in the past few years?
A.Poor soil.
B.Continual floods.
C.High demand for farmland and food.
D.Large wildfires and people's cutting trees.
34.What does the underlined word"dwindling"in Paragraph 4 mean?
A.Suitable.
B.Obvious.
C.Falling
D.Boring
35.Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A.California's trees will die out in the future
(外研社)高二英语(二)第5页(共8页)
B.California's air quality will face a big challenge
C.Wildfires seriously threaten California's tree cover
D.The reason for California wildfires has been found out

Many people want to know more about ways to be kinder, more caring neighbors.36,
they are also helpful to the parents and adults in the room.
Get to know your neighbors
37.Get out of your comfort zone and make an effort to learn their names and what they do
for work. And if you feel comfortable, let them know that you're there to help,if they ever need
another hand.Or it's truly as simple as say ing hello, introducing yourself and asking an open-ended
question.
Make small kind gestures a daily practice
Another way to take care of your neighborhood, and to show your neighbors that you care,is
by making small acts of kindness a daily practice.38.Use the skills and resources available to
you.Remember,every small gesture counts.
Remind yourself that being connected feels good
It can feel so easy to just go home, close your door and turn on the TV without having to make
small talk. However, connecting with others is worth the effort.Reaching out to new people can
actually make you happy in the long run.And if you take the first step, your small acts of kindness
can encourage others to pay that kindness forward.39.
40
Encouraging your kids to get out there and engage with your neighbors is important, but it isn't
always easy to balance this with conversations on safety and the so-called stranger danger. One way

Arthur realised that he mistook the young man for the bank thief. As a result,he had to return
